There seems to be a link between each Loyalist and traitor Legion, Because of Thier combat doctrine and beliefs

For example: Iron Hands and Emperors Children Both belived in achieving human perfection

Space Wolves and World Eaters Both liked to be unrelenting in war, and liked to close with the enemy to fight at close range

Any others that people can think of?

Is it going to be any great surprise to find parallels between the good and bad sides of the Heresy?

Raven Guard weren't a Legion. ;)

Edit: Or starlight is the one who is stoned (not likely) for confusing Raven Guard with Blood Ravens...:(

..that's a surprise, I'm stoned but I'm sure they were.
It won't work perfectly one to one, cos for instance there's the Blood Angels to compare with the World Eaters perhaps instead of the Wolves.. White Scars-Night Lords? Salamanders-Death Guard? I'm struggling here..
Ultramarines and Alpha Legion on the matter of warfare, tactics, strategy etc?
IH and EC is the best imo, i said it on another thread the other day, they're connected by the drive for perfection of the human but divided by their ideologies, and in 40k as opposed to 30k the IH are all about purity of purpose and denial of the weaknesses of flesh, while the EC are all about gratification, hedonism, sensualism etc. that's cool, and it helps me accept Fulgrim killing Ferrus :chrome:
IF and IW is pretty sound.
Blood Angels and Emperors Children? Appreciation of beauty, art, belief that things can be changed for the better..
I guess it shows that the character and background of the Legions is too deep and 3-d in some cases and too non-specific in others to match'em up against eachother like a team of Xmen vs. their dark sides or something, but it's cool, it's what this is for.

I've tried to do this lately, but find it falls apart after the first obvious choices.

I also go more on conflicts, as well. They are rivals, so should have some fighting between them.

The obvious ones:

Blood Angels/World Eaters: Assault oriented. Sanguinius fights Bloodthrister multiple times.
Alpha Legion/Ultramarines: Tactics and strategy. Guilliman may have killed Alpharius.
Emperor's Children/Iron Hands: Perfection. Fulgrim killed Ferrus.
Iron Warriors/Imperial Fists: Siege specialists. The Iron Cage incident.
Thousand Sons/Space Wolves: Sorcery versus brawling. In opposition from day one, Russ forces Magnus to Chaos.
Night Lords/Raven Guard: Sneaky and Flyers. Know for Jump Packs and infiltration, both at Drop Site Massacre.

The rest are a bit harder. Maybe more info about the legions would help me.

Death Guard/Salamanders: Tough. On opposite sides of Drop Site Massacre.
Black Legion/White Scars: Lightning strike/speartip. Could be considered similar tactics, both at Siege of Terra.
Word Bearers/Dark Angels: Faith/Loyalty. Word Bearers first turned, Dark Angels partly turned and have repented for it since.

i argee with you for most of it . expcet ...
night lord/white scars: steath stike vs lighting stike = slow death vs quick death but , both of them use more fast attack than the other .
black legion / Ultramarines : both permarch are born to be leader out of leader
Alpha Legion/Raven Guard: both parmarch are the wordless type. and both legion are able to function with out a over all commander

I would have to link the Dark Angels with the Lunar wolves.
TRUST
The Dark Angels after the Lion did not Trust the Emperors Dark Angels and the Lunar Wolves turned because Horus coudn't trust the Emperor.

I'd say the Dark angels / Alpha legion.

The first and the last, The legion that ponces about in dresses lauding that they are the honoured First legion, and the poor Alpha legion, the last, the forgotten brothers constantly trying to live up to their elder brothers.

It's interesting that you compare Thousand Sons with Space Wolves, GreenDracoBob. I think their combat styles are completely opposite. SW prefer a stand up fight, while the TS prefer long range and trikery.

What they do have in common however, is that they are both anachronisms in 40K. When the SW codex came out, someone in WD called them a WHFB army in 40K. They're like space barbarians.

Thousands Sons on the other hand practice sorcery, which again seems have more of a place in Fantasy.
