So I have started a TOP type thread on carpe but thought I would go solo on warseer.
I am going to finish my Vc army "The horde of Count Olaf" this year to at least a 2K level.
Some of you might have read the BR's of Count Olaf but now it's time for them to get a paint job.
I have been painting on and off for about 20 years and have been up till recently a kinda old fashioned type of painter in the basecoat, ink, drybrush style.
Since I started playing again I have seen how painting has moved on and I am determined to experiment and get better. So any advice is more tha welcome.
I love to try and make things look different, so I will be trying to experiment.
The first thing I did was buy some Coffin lid shields from GW direct and then I chopped up 40 skeletons or so to make 75, using the look from the army book of them coming out of their graves in the ground. Plus it doubles the size of your army for free! :)

So here are the pics of my army so far, not painted much in a year.

This is my army painted so far

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02248.jpg

My skeletons coming out of the ground, complete with coffins. there will be 2 more units of these.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02250.jpg

My ghouls, I have another 10 to do.

My Bat swarms (retired)

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02252.jpg

Spirit host, must re-do these, use classic figures.
And after seeing other jobs, I must paint them better as well, this was a really rushed job first time round.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02253.jpg

And my wolves, again another 10 to do

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02254.jpg

So here is what I have to do this month
First another unit of 25 skeletons, lead by my Skaven skele.

FatOlaf

And also I will finish Boris the Giant, who is on his base coat stage

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02257.jpg

And so I started by ignoring the skeletons and the Giant and taking apart the host models. I had a bag of old minis from the 80's and picked a few out to mix in with the host models. I wanted the bases to show how the minis might have met their maker, from the Dwarf with illusions of grandeur to the Slayer who met his match, to the villager who fled his village, to the sneaky goblin who did not look behind.
The Zoat model I just decided to put with a nice Flaggellant model and a rat to make a moody trio, make your own story up for these guys.

And then I took out my empire knights and killed them! I was inspired by seeing EvC's BK and decided to take a stab at making my own.
I really dont like the current BK mounts and the riders wont fit on any other steed, so on Ebay they go! I had ten to do and it was a simple job of filing away some Sigmar insignias and chopping off their heads. To fill in the gap where the neck should be, I made some GS ruffles to give them that medieval look. The guy with his helmet under his arm was an opportunity not to be missed so I tried to model a skull inside the helmet to make a headless horseman.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02293.jpg

And a back shot of my unit champion so you can see the ruffles I have put on them to cover the neck and add some character...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02295.jpg

And here is the rest of the unit so far

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02294.jpg

FatOlaf
19-09-2007, 13:22
So a while later, I finished the remaining BK and then based them.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02296.jpg

Then I undercoated, during which time my spray can ran out, I have 4 cans of white spray paint for some reason but no more black, which is a worry when painting BLACK knights... So have to finish these off by hand and then on to the base coats...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02297.jpg

These guys will be Count Olaf's Crimson Guard, The black armour will have a hint of red to it and the ruffles will be red. The steeds will have a very nightmare look to them, with red eyes and tales.
The hosts will be drybrushed up from grey to white, giving them a good ghost look without making them look like statues, at least that's the idea. If anyone has any good ideas how to paint the hosts, let me know.
I also found a guy on Ebay who sells some very good dead leaves of which I bought a few boxes, these leaves will be added to the Hosts bases to give them a more somber mood....

Impressive looking work; I like the use of the Empire plastics on the black knights; look far better than the standard metal models.

Looking forward to seeing more :)

So with a mix of five colours, I dry brushed my hosts upto ghostly like status. The use of Hawk Turquoise added the extra bit to make them stand out a bit, sadly the light on the pics makes this hard to see.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02317.jpg

And after work on the rest of the base

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02318.jpg

All I need to do today (hopefully) is finish the tree and then the base, complete with autumn leaves..

More soon...

i did a simular convertion for my black knights, only i used bretonian knights.

rest of the army looks good, a nice idea to use the other undead races (orcs, skaven ect..) as champions.

So took longer than I would have liked but I have finished the hosts. I'm quite pleased with the way they came out and like the effect of the leaves.

The light does not show the slight green tint to the hosts that make them stand out more

So hosts finished now just the BK to do, really hope to finish them this month but I am moving house (which is always fun) so the chaos of that might eat into my painting time. But the plan is to finish them followed by the skelle unit and then start on my CD army to vary it all up a bit....

Those spirit host are great mate, really like the one with the guy running away with the hand coming up from the ground to grab him, good stuff!

My question is where did you get the leaves from??? I'm looking to use hundreds upon hundreds of them for my elves bases, they look great on your models, I just have no idea where to get my mittens on them.

Keep up the painting, this is a great example of making an army (comparatively) cheaply, whilst still having it look good.

Currently in the middle of moving house but in a couple of weeks, should all be back to normal, I will start my PLOG up again, BK to finish first.
As for the BR's, they will start again in 08, stay tuned...

Well I have survived moving house and Xmas day (had a lovely ear infection all over the Xmas period) and even got the new citadel tools set from the wife as a present. Just as well, as one of my boxes of figures died during the moving process. The box of doom now contains a smashed up Zombie dragon, TS, BG, Ushabti, Slann amongst others. They will need some severe pinning and first aid.
Anyway I hope to resume painting within the week, with the rumours of ethereal mounts for the BK, I will leave painting them till the new book comes out , along with all my VC army.
I have decided that 08 will be the year of my LM army and my new WE (I say new, it's been in a box unopened for about a year, 2K's worth) army.
My first mission therefore is to paint 2K worth of LM by the end of March (in time for the VC book) and paint them in the style of the army of the Sun god. Gone are blues and greens, in for 08 are yellow, red and orange. I have some good ideas for bases and centre pieces as well and cant wait to get started. I shall post up WIP pics as I go along of course and there might even be some new BR's for 08 as well, featuring my two new armies. Count Olaf is on holiday for the time being, off to the new world, lovely this time of year, they say...
So stay tuned and I'll post soon...

Sooo after a long break from painting I'm back with a mission, inspired by Harry and his PLOG (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87490) and the fact I'm taking part in this years GT in Oct. I have to finish my VC army.

First up are zombies, I need about 100, so I have to make the units i have bigger with some converting, some unit fillers etc and then paint them 'Harry Batch' stylee... So starting Monday I have the week off and a mission.

Expect pics every day and progress reports next week...

hurrah! one of my favorite logs is back! i've got over 100 zombies to do myself so any advice/ tutorials would be great

FatOlaf
28-07-2008, 17:27
So Monday morning and time for braaains!
I have currently over 50 Zombies on standard bases but need to increase their numbers, making some unit fillers with various items from my Bitz box and chopping up some of my current zombies..

http://pic30.picturetrail.com:80/VOL1530/7072621/20194086/327647498.jpg

So I start off by using the modular bases to make some 4*4 and 6*6 unit bases, and then start to create some mini scenes..

My first one will be using a lovely crypt from Heroquest, I took off the card edging and replaced it with some plasti-card

http://pic30.picturetrail.com:80/VOL1530/7072621/20194086/327647689.jpg

This was then flocked to add a stone feel to the sides and put on the base, a marauding zombie was added to fit it in..

http://pic30.picturetrail.com:80/VOL1530/7072621/20194086/327648327.jpg

I have since added some rubble ( i love painting pebbles to look like stones ) to the sides, and flocked the base..

I then started routing through my box to get ideas for further bases..

http://pic30.picturetrail.com:80/VOL1530/7072621/20194086/327647837.jpg

FatOlaf
28-07-2008, 17:38
So I started by making an easy 4*4 cairn base, with the good old 'Carrie' style zombie hand emerging from the ground below..

http://pic30.picturetrail.com:80/VOL1530/7072621/20194086/327648148.jpg

Then a more ornate one set in a basement somewhere, with a zombie coming out of a barrel and another one coming out from a trapdoor (there's something down there!)

The bucket in front of the barrel will have pvc water inside with a small trail of blood / entrails dripping in from the emerging zombie..

http://pic30.picturetrail.com:80/VOL1530/7072621/20194086/327648002.jpg

I then created a few more, a graveyard complete with small mound and rushes, a ladder wielding zombie and a zombie by a roadside lamp, going to try a few lighting effects on this one.
Took them outside and flocked and undercoated most of them, a few additions needed for a few of them..

http://pic30.picturetrail.com:80/VOL1530/7072621/20194086/327649734.jpg

next up is undercoating for the rest of my zombies and then the painting can begin...

More tomorrow!

Nice start- I really like your unit fillers- loads of character and very amusing. looking forward to seeing them painted up. Far play to you for doing so many zombies at once- i'm not particularly looking forward to doing them myself. I'm sure yours will be a big inspiration.

FatOlaf
29-07-2008, 12:44
hurrah! one of my favorite logs is back! i've got over 100 zombies to do myself so any advice/ tutorials would be great

Well it's all a bit of an experiment really, so lets just see what happens...:D

Nice start- I really like your unit fillers- loads of character and very amusing. looking forward to seeing them painted up.

Thanks stu, they are there mainly to cover up the rest of the zombies if they turn out Oribble...

So done all the basecoating, going to start painting the unit fillers today and do a trial run zombie, just to experiment with the right mix of colurs for the dry brushing. My plan is to do a mix of earthy colours, with dry brush and ink and then pick out entrails and organs with some nice bright pinks and purples...

FatOlaf
29-07-2008, 16:37
So i finished off my Graveyard scene, with a zombie, another emerging hand (love those hands!) and some reeds (from a brush), and then undercoated it.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02864.jpg

i now have enough unit fillers to represent another 30+ zombies, more than enough me thinks..

I then picked 3 of the fillers and started doing the bases.. (The Styx river man mini you can see in the background is a very old citadle model that will be going in my Grave Guard unit)

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02866.jpg

Building up the layers till I had a nice muddy, stoney feel

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02867.jpg

Pretty all much dry brushed.. The I added some flock using a bit too much glue, to make it more mossy in look..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02868.jpg

FatOlaf
29-07-2008, 16:42
I especially liked the weathering effect I created on the crypt filler

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02869.jpg

Now I needed to do the zombies, I used a test subject first before I went and painted the zombies already on the bases.

I wanted to get a nice 'been below' ground feel to the zombies that could be achieved mainly thorugh drybrushing, essentail if I am too paint everything I need to in time..

So taking a zombie without weapons, I started off undercoating and then a dry brush of Bestial brown..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02870.jpg

Followed by a layer of Codex Grey

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02873.jpg

And then a smattering of Snot green

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02874.jpg

FatOlaf
29-07-2008, 16:46
This was then washed down with 1 part brown ink to 3 parts water

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02875.jpg

This then gives a nice, wet earth feel. I then followed up with a light brush of Tanned Flesh

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02877.jpg

and finally a final light brush of good old Rotting Flesh (of course!)

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02878.jpg

I then attacked the entrails in his stomach with lovely Tentacle Pink

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02879.jpg

FatOlaf
29-07-2008, 16:49
And then lastly picked out the teeth ( what he had of them ) with bleached bone and covered the entrails in a wash of Magenta Ink. Finally using a fine drawing pen, gave him a black pupil in his one open eye (done after this photo).

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02880.jpg

Now I feel that came out alright, maybe on the next ones, i might do a slightly less watered down ink wash on his body but I think it will do for Rank and File..

So onto the finishing the base's zombies and then to add some of my lovely leaves..

FatOlaf
29-07-2008, 18:48
So in a final spurt I finshed the bases (almost) before my battle tonight..

The 'Carrie' base

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02882.jpg

The Zombie on top of the crypt

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02887.jpg

And the graveyard

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02888.jpg

And the group shot (just some leaves to add and the solo Zombie's base)

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02889.jpg

so tomorrow, I'm going to crack on with the rest of the zombies and hopefully get all the base colours done, leaving teeth, entrials, basing and the remaining 3 filler bases to do, the rest of the week...

silverstu
29-07-2008, 21:29
Lookin' good!! The weathering on all the fillers and the basing is great. Your scheme for the zombies is working well too- this is all going to look splendid.[Intrigued by the boatman mini- must have passed me by- should be an excellent addition to your graveguard regiment- what models are you going to use for them??].

FatOlaf
30-07-2008, 12:06
ta stu, the boatman mini is about 20 years old, something early from citadel. So far I'm looking at using the 6th Ed Graveguard, I quite like them but might be tempted to go for the new ones come payday. All depends on which unit fits in with the boatman the best..

So progress today, have painted all the weapons on the individual zombies, now they just need drybrushing

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02890.jpg

FatOlaf
30-07-2008, 16:40
And with Pub time looming I leave off today with 10 of the zombies done upto the wash coat, with 2 more drybrushes to go and details to be added. Will get them finished tomorrow and start on the last 14..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02891.jpg

silverstu
30-07-2008, 22:58
Well keep at it mate- starting to shape up nicely. Don't remember the boatman mini- but then again I was obsessed with my dwarfs at the time! I can highly recomend the new graveguard minis by the way- seriously lovely plastic kit which matches if not beats any metals I've seen.

FatOlaf
31-07-2008, 16:28
Right then, even with a thumping hangover I managed to get the zombies finished, just need to finish the wood on the handles....

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02892.jpg

More tomorrow, going to do some of the other fillers after I have taken my cat to the vets...

FatOlaf
02-08-2008, 15:36
Right then, the cricket has been distracting me but I shall prevail :D

This lot now finished, bases done, leaves down, a few details on the weapons....

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02899.jpg

Going to start on the other unit fillers now before going back to rank and file zombies.
And they are currently now on base coat stage:

Yep funny thing was I did it this way thinking it would be quick but has proved to be the opposite. But it is looking good IMO so I will carry on, only 2 fillers and 40 odd zombies to go.............Then BK next, now with ethereal steeds...

I have just started a new job with a bitch of a commute, so for the next few weeks, I will only be painting on the wknds, so look out for an update this Saturday...

The Flash on the camera is making the guts look brighter than they are, but I like the contrast it gives, and not many of the models have their guts hanging out anyway, so i blends in well..

Ta fella and yes get to it *cracks whip!*....:D

Have been painting today, I have a doubles tournie next wknd, so I need 750 points fully painted. So that means I need to finish at leats another 20 zombies , a vamp hero and my Black knights, which is what I'm doing today whilst watching the olympics. Pics will come soon...

FatOlaf
10-08-2008, 12:33
So by the end of Saturday night, I had made progress on the Black Knights, having finished the steeds (ethereal) and done the base coats on the knights. I have started on my vampire, giving him a nice red cloak and my zombie fillers were on their inking stage...

Also on the cards over the next few weeks is my august contribution for the TOP, I'm doing LM this year based on the Tribe of the Sun god, so lots of yellows, reds and oranges for these guys...this is a pic of my trial models in very rough base stage...

The Flash on the camera is making the guts look brighter than they are, but I like the contrast it gives, and not many of the models have their guts hanging out anyway, so i blends in well..

Very well than, my apologies.
Overall your army is coming along splendidly and it looks fantastic. As for the Kinghts...it appears that all you did was drybrush them; is that really all you did? because they look wonderful, i may have to steal your idea one day;). Keep up the work! Im looking forward to more!

. As for the Kinghts...it appears that all you did was drybrush them; is that really all you did?

Yes indeed, the steeds are done the same way as the spirit hosts before, drybruished from dark grey to light grey, turquoise and then white, works rather well...

So have made good progress on the Knights today, only things left to do are finish their weapons (& make them look 'killing blow' esque) and drybrush their armour... Having a few problems with the heads, cant quite seem to get them right, might start again on them...

Put quite a bit of work into the shields, but I think it was worth it

So far I have:

Finshed Count Olaf

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02929.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02931.jpg

Just his base to go...

And also the Knights are finished (just the bases again to do)

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02923.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02924.jpg

I have since these pics, brown inked their teeth, which makes the heads alot better

Zombies and group army shot on it's way....

So sorry for delay, came back from the Doubles tournament in 6th place out of 18, which weren't bad. 1 win and 2 draws, with both of them very close to wins... So unbeaten which was great. Plus got some great comments for my Zombies which made the late night, the night before worth it...

So I now have 5 weeks to go before my GT qualifier tournament so I need to finish my VC army quick smart. I Will need to finish about 20 more zombies to be on the safe side, but first things first, going to do a Corpse Cart:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02940.jpg

Possibly one of two....

Then I need to finish my first unit for my LM army for the Warseer TOP, so my sallies will be painted this week..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02938.jpg

Now I have my set of washes, I'm looking forwards to see how they work out..

Also I have started playing Warhammer Cowboys at my club and have some excellent models from Black Scorpion. I'm going for a Posse of Outlaws with a mad preacher in tow. So first things first I need to paint my Posse Hero:

'12 Shot Olaf'...............:D

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02939.jpg

So I have the next couple of days off, lets see how far I get....

FatOlaf
24-08-2008, 18:19
Well not bad start today, undercoated me cowboy and did his face, started the first couple of drybrush layers on the pile of zombies in the middle of the cart (has to be done seperate) and got stuck in with the Sallies...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02946.jpg

The I finished the scales on all the sallies..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02947.jpg

And based, washed (love that stuff) with sepia and did the eyes on the handlers...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02949.jpg

Tomorrow, the plan is to finish the Sallie unit and then play around with my ideas for the bases for my LM army. Lots of broken statues, jungle growth and put the swarms to some use (now that the unit is now useless)... Stay Tuned!

FatOlaf
28-08-2008, 15:59
So nearly finished them, just the bases to do and fingernails on the skink handlers...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02951.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02950.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02952.jpg

Will actually have them ready for the start of the month and the TOP deadline, which then leaves me time to finish my VC army for the GT, Corpse cart first...

FatOlaf
31-08-2008, 18:02
So with just the bases to finish, here's a sneak peek at the unit...

The skink handlers, finished

and the Sallies, with the bases to finish

Will be finished in time for TOP new thread..

Let me know what you think...

Unit done, I now have just under a month to finish my VC army in time for the GT, so I have to do a whole unit of Grave Guard, some more characters, A lot more zombies, Bats and Some more Skeletons, so keep tuned for lots more VC painting, all hopefully a little bit different from the norm, oh and do please leave some feedback, it does spur me on...

Lizzies look great mate- nice colours and great work on the skinks eyes. Looking forward to seeing you paint up the corpsecart - I got my battalion the other day- it's a great kit. Albino bats?? Sounds cool- I have to tackle fell bats myself and I'm wondering how to do them with my winter theme so it will be good to see how they fair in a paler scheme.

So aplogies for the delay in posting, I have been working on my bats this wknd, even with the distraction of the Ryder Cup..

I have less than 2 weeks to go before the GT and a mountain of stuff still to paint, so I need to get a wiggle on..

So my Bats are first, Albino stylee.....

Using Plaster of Paris cake decorations, I have some nice fallen pillar bases for them, giving them some nice height and the ability to rank up..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02973.jpg

And in order some pics of the bats in WIP form..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02974.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02975.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02976.jpg

They are now finished and I am working on finishing the bases tonight, then I need to drill and fill the bats in order to securely attach them to the bases..

Finished pics soon....The after that, my corpse cart, VC lord and 2 'special' necros, 20 Grave Guard with unit filler and then some extra special objective markers, going to be a bust 10 days or so, so stay tuned....

Wooo- very nice- the albino look works very well - and nice idea with the cake decoration pillars- I may have to "borrow" that idea myself. How did you one down the pinks of the wings? A wash perhaps?
Looking forward to the completed beasties with their nice bases. Very keen to see your graveguard- did you go for classics on new plastics? I like the walking book and the start of the corpsecart lurking in the background. Intrigued as well about your "special" necros.. Every confidence you'll get them all done in time mate.

'borrow' away mate, you can get them from Marks and Spencers in the wedding cake section, and yes a wash of Ogryn Flesh on the wings and Devlan mud on the fur..

Hey this is a really cool army now. I like everything you done so far and its all the details and thinking behind it that makes it really good.

And any plans on a Abyssal Horror? Could be fun to build!

Thanks fella... The pillars are plaster of Paris Wedding Cake decorations, that can be found in any wedding shop..
As for the Horror, maybe, in time...:D

So I came back from the GT having qualified in 17th place, a huge suprise for me but a welcome one, I posted 4 wins, 1 loss and a draw, winning all 3 games on my first day, reaching the giddy heights of table 5 on game 4..

I was lucky to avoid dameons though, and there were a **** load of Kairos Fateweaver / Blue scribes lists around, which against PD heavy Vc lists equals Dooom......
However my list was quite balanced and I had no complaints from any of my opponents (apart from the amount of Zombies I kept summoning)
I got most of the army finished but my GG were rushed and still need work, even though you can see where they are heading at the moment...

I now have over 100 zombies but think i need a few more, seriously I ran out in the GT.....:cries:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02989.jpg

The raised zombies still have a few things to do, teeth and a bit of work on the bases but as I was still painting them the night before the GT, I skipped the finer details..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02990.jpg

My Hero gang, which one of my 'Necros' has the book of arkhan and which is my scroll caddy, can you guess hey?

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC02994.jpg

Any my GG, so far, they were basecoated black, then 'fogged' white and then washed with the new sepia GW wash. Details will be picked out in metal and Red and the overall effect should be quite nice, still they were ok for the heat as they were but will need finishing for the final in GT...

FatOlaf
13-10-2008, 14:11
And lastly my Corpse cart, which took me ages, fiddly thing that it is...
I will have to re-do my base as this was a temp job at the GT as I had not based it before hand but was told to.
But I am happy with it, just maybe need to touch up the lanterns, which I think could look better (any advice welcome)

So am taking a short break from painting, going away next wknd but then the week after I will be starting again in earnest, I have to catch up with my TOP commitments and finish my grave guard.... Thanks fella, was a great result... Yep I Know I have a lot, went a bit mad when I started playing again and bought 6 armies at well over 20K, got rid of my WE's and Chaos dwarves as I found them really boring to play, but that still leaves me with VC, TK, Skaven, LM and a small O&G army, plus I have started 40K as well...:D Still now I have found a new love of painting and my armies are all getting new books in the imminent future, it will spur me on to get them all finished..

The grave guard look splendid- very spectral and forbidding- looking forward to seeing you finish them.

Yep I think the finished result will be great, but I need 5 more of the models with the flat heads, so this is a shout out to anyone who has some, do you want to sell them or swap them for the other models...

The corpse cart looks excellent as well- it's a great model isn't it?

Great but really fiddly in places, will paint the next one in bits before I assemble it...

i looked out at GT, didnt spot you though !

i failed harsh, and was down bottem somwhere, i lost 3, which were due too putting my lord in wrong unit, not being able too roll and not being able too roll/not bothering too prove my right-ness with the rules . . . in that order.

Glad too see u qualified, the army looks quite nice =)

So I have been inactive for a while, i came back from the GT on a high and then it all went downhill from there. My 20 year old Cat died which hit me hard, followed by losing my job, so painting took a back burner the last few months.

But Dec is looking up, I have a new job (thank god, in this climate) and have perked up in general.
I think I will be dropping out of the TOP however, as my VC need to take a front seat to be ready for the GT final in Feb 09. Plus with loads of new LM coming out in Feb, I really dont know what units to paint now.

So VC it is and I need to get quite a lot done as I'm taking CC vamps to the final so need some new units, not sure yet whether I will take GG or BK, so have to make sure they are finished in case I take them.

So the plan for Dec is to do 15 GG (finish them) and do my albino Varghulf.

Really really tempted to drop the wraiths and take 2 of these bad boys to the GT for fun, I think I am going to have to try this one out first as my Banshee has proven so effective of late....

So will start some painting on thursday (my next day off), so stay tuned...

I know, the last 3 months have been ********* horrible and painting and the TOP did not get a look in. I will resume the LM in Feb when the new book comes out but will keep it to my own schedule, which actually will probably be quicker with the amount of tournies I'm going to in Early 2009..

I am looking forward to seeing you resume your VC- interested to see how your vargulf turns out. How do you reckon a CC vamp list will look?

Varghulf (or 2!) up next for painting... And as for the CC list it can be quite bloody scary, took one to a tournie recently and it can be devastating, but the risk is always there with your general..

*poke*poke*
Wotcha! How's tricks? any developments on the painting front or are you swamped by the festive season like the rest of us?

Things are settling down now so I will be doing some painting over the Xmas / New year period, since I will be home alone (wife away with parents)..:cries:

These guys look great! Can't wait for some more pictures, how did you do that ethereal effect on the BK's? Ace painting!

Thanks mate, the BK was the same as the wraiths and spirit host, various shades of grey drybrushed from dark to light, with some blue and white at the end, Finished off with a matt varnish which makes them less statue looking...

Nice army so far. I like how you painted the zombies. Hope to see more soon. :)

Thankyou and you will...

I have a a tournie in the middle of Jan at 2250 points and want to go CC heavy for this one, which means I need to finish some more figures.

So as promised (v late I know) update time.

I left my painting very late, not starting till Thursday with the Tournie tomorrow.
I had to repair a lot of damage to my bats and vampires first and then I started on my unit of skele's, Varghulf and Wight King BSB..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03024.jpg

And I was doing an Albino Varg to match the Fell Bats

and worked into the wee hours, hence the bad light

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03030.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03031.jpg

And just the base to do on the Wight King, I love this model, great Wight and then a totally knackered looking horse, I nicked the standard of another wight and attached it to this one... There will be some red banners draping down from it, but not in time for tomorrow..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03032.jpg

That leaves 25 Skele to do tonight, just the shields to finish and the bases, so hopefully will get it done in time..

3 games of 2250 tomorrow, so wish me luck...

you don't need luck! Just win! (hope all goes well and lovely Vargulf BTW)

Thanks Fella

Well It didn't go that well, Horrible BloodThirster Deamon army round one which after miscasting turn one gave me very little chance. My Lvl 1 Vamp did take 4 wounds off the BT in a challenge though, which was fun, and Henry The Varghulf killed rather a lot by himself but Lord died turn 6 and everything crumbled..
Loss 0-10

Then I had Ogres, but some bad bad dice, only gave me a draw, which of course he loved..

Lastly Bretts, which I love facing with VC, as the Guiness flowed, I was feeling better and more confident and wiped the floor with him (although only a 8-2 win)...

So a Win a Draw and a Loss, 43rd out of 60, not great at all... Been struggling with VC in pitched battles since the GT and I dont know what's wrong with me..
So the Vamps are going to be 'rested' for a while and I am going to get to grips with the changes in the LM army... I'm going to a few doubles tournies over the next 2 months and need either a LM or Skaven army painted for them.. (amazingly those 2 races can ally in the GW doubles GT????), so I have lots of practise games soon and some funky ideas for my LM and Skaven..I'm thinking Temple Bases for my Fire God LM army and a Desert Rats theme for my Skaven (or maybe Albino, Snow), stay tuned....

Ooo badluck at the tournie mate. Great to see you back painting- love Henry the Vargulf- great details on his base too. Thats a fair amount of skellies you got done and a great job on that wight king- normally not a fan of that model but you're showing it's potential! What list did you go for? CC?
looking forward to the lizzies and/or skaven.

FatOlaf
20-01-2009, 10:05
whats your current list? sucks against the bloodthirster. i just danse a unit of skellies into him and keep raising them to keep him tarpitted.

Well that was part of my plan, but the miscast in the 1st turn ended the magic phase and left me up ***** creek..

It's a very balanced list with a magic heavy Lord but only 9PD overall. Supported by wraiths, Henry and 6 BK unit with ward save, bats and dogs keep them company. 2 small (to start with) units of skele's house my Necro, Lord, Lvl 1 Vamp and the WK goes in the BK..

whats next on the painting schedule?

I have some 750points games tonight with my Skaven, to try out the various combos, so it might be my lovely Stormvermin first (never thought of not using their Halberd in CC, giving them a not too shabby 3+AS in CC)...

But it's only a couple of weeks till I get my 3 new Stegs.....:D

Ooo badluck at the tournie mate.

Thanks fella. But I really was not expecting much after the bad start to the year, so after a few days thinking, I'm happy with a win/lose/draw

Great to see you back painting- love Henry the Vargulf

Great to be back, I have also been painting my new Battleboard that I got over Xmas, my god it takes a while to do, flock everywhere... But I will get a piccy up to show what it looks like in battle. I finished it last night and have a doubles game at my house tomorrow night... I tell you the wife is loving this, about 17 games in last 3 weeks, 3 nights in a row this week....

I quite like how Henry turned out, I will do his brother 'Bob' soon, who is the complete opposite of his sibling....

looking forward to the lizzies and/or skaven.

Me too, will make a change from painting bloody zombies all the time....:)

3 Stegs sound like fun- in your usual vibrant palette I trust?

Yep Stegs will be in Fire God theme, pics of board coming tonight...

And I have decided for sure to go with my 'Desert Rats' theme for my skaven, need to source a few materials for them but will start them this week and hopefully get my 750 pts force done before the Stegs smash down my door..

Desert skaven eh? Sounds rather intriguing..

And will be coming soon, but since I have decided to take LM to the 3 doubles tournies I am doing in the next 3 months, I have to put them on the back burner (till the new book comes out at the latest) and concentrate on my cold blooded critters.
I will be using the 'Tribe of the Fire god' scheme for them, lots of yellows, oranges and reds with a ruined temple scheme for the bases, saurus marching on cobbled roads, skinks on temple ruins, that sort of thing. I iwll be doing a unit a week (hopefully :D) so I will update this PLOG with more regularity from now on..

In the mean time here is a pic of my now finished Battle Board..

I will be making lots of scenery for it as well, more to come...

Mordheim range along with the skaven and goblin and LM ones...

Avian

Those guys are from the Cursed Company (Regiment of Renown), the Mordheim guys are all zombies (and mainly humans apart from one elf and one dwarf).

Good work :)

FatOlaf
04-02-2009, 09:48
You're right Avian but when I bought them they were on sale on the Mordheim section of the website, they were probably moonlighting for extra business..

Used my LM with the new rules for the first time last night and I have to say I was suprised how good they were. Skinks ranked up were great, Terries and Sallies with the new rules are awesome...
Now I just need to paint them, first up for me is a Border Patrols doubles comp, So I need 500 points worth painted up for beginning of March....

FatOlaf
08-03-2009, 16:36
Right (late) update time.
I have a border patrol doubles comp in 2 weeks and I have to get a wriggle on and paint my blooming force. Any comments to push me in the right direction will be much appreciated..

I am allying with Empire and my list looks like this.

Skink Chief on Terradon

4 Terradons

10 skinks with Javelins + Musician

10 Skink skirmishers with Blowpipes

10 Saurus with Spears and Musician

I have been building the new terries, which have proved to be a nightmare, worse than the last ones. Why they did not make them in plastic, I will never know.

Greenstuff and multiple pinning a go go. I am going to use 2 of the old models because I seriously wont have time to build 2 more of the new ones...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03043.jpg

I have 2 wings to go on two of the models, so I have done a bit more than what's in the picture..

The bases will be ruined temple combined with lots of foliage to represent their new Arboreal predator rule (Love that rule)...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03045.jpg

The ranked up skinks will be marching down temple steps, whilst the Saurus will be on cobbled temple bases. The skirmishers will be in the undergrowth.
The colour scheme will be in my fire god theme, with yellow skinks, orange terradons and red Saurus (the older the creature, the darker the colour), so it should look good and different... Only thing is Time is not on my side...

However this will then leave me just under a month to upgrade the force to 750 pts for the Doubles GT, which means one of these bad boys will need painting up..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03046.jpg

Then the real work will begin with just under a month to get the force to 2150 for the WPS club challenge, so expect regular updates over the next 3 months as there is no backing out of it for me and tickets have been bought and lists written...

Wish me luck and say tuned.....

Dino

In my humble opinion for your force just stick to skink skirmishers. They're more mobile and thats what this force could excel in if you do. Saurus with spears are a very good idea.

I may have to barrow the idea for youre terradons basses. I may weigh mine down more though.

Anyway hope to see more soon. Good luck.

Hurrah! You're back! That's a nice little bunch of lizzies you've got going there. Love the basing ideas. Looking forward to see the steg[s] painted up and these basing ideas materialize. Good luck mate- I'm sure you'll do it.

Aah but I love my ranked skinks, makes re-directing much easier, which is good for my Empire ally, plus the lists are meant to be friendly (er)....

Borrow away sir, And yes I will be weighing them down underneath with magnets...

Good luck mate- I'm sure you'll do it.

Hope so, these Terries are proving very difficult to aseemble, however I have taken a few extra days off work over the next 2 weeks, so I should have enough time.....Should being the operative word....:D

Right with the Terries built, I thought I would start the painting with the saurus, complete with magnetic temple base..

My saurus being the older members of the tribe are red, so I set about base coating with Foundation paint..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03103.jpg

And then washing, and basic highlighting, followed by a basecoat for the shields..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03105.jpg

With the football proving a distraction, the daylight ran out so they will be finished tomorrow..

FatOlaf
14-03-2009, 19:23
I then went about making magnetic, temple cobbled bases for the Saurus and a textured movement tray (complete with some suitable decorations).
This tray was lined with a steel sheet and magnetic strips on the underside, so the whole thing will be fully portable..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03098.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03104.jpg

The bases were scored and then drybrushed to look like old temple cobbles, complete with moss growing in the 'grouting'
Movement tray is drybrushed to look like stone, I might add some vegetation, or I might not........

More to come tomorrow...

Saurus movement tray finished...(Fully magnetic)

Not sure about adding some moss though....

Saurus, drybrushed just need highlights and details

Started work on the Skinks (Ranked), they will be coming down temple steps

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03111.jpg

Plus also I ordered this kit to make an Orc Tower, very cheap but that's because it comes like this...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03107.jpg

Hundreds and Hundreds of Resin pieces all in a bag, quite a lot broken as well, which is fun, so lots of glue later we have a starting tower..

If this goes well, i will be getting this huge ruined church from the same company...

Good thinking on the bases- magnetic and everything- very cunning!I'd add a little vegetation- even if it is static grass "moss"- will show up the stone really well. Liking the red saurus- you have been busy! Looking forward to seeing them finished. Interesting tower- were did you get it?

Looking good so far man. Do you plan to make the scales darker? And if you do what colour are you planning?

Piccy bad so you can't really see the highlights, but it wont get any darker, but there is more highlights and some drybrushing to come..

Saving the much darker reds for the big fellas....

Good thinking on the bases- magnetic and everything- very cunning!I'd add a little vegetation- even if it is static grass "moss"- will show up the stone really well.

I think I will try some of the static grass, as the flock was done to death on my VC bases, which I want to stay away from.
If anyone has any tips on how to make the clumps of grass stay up, I would be most grateful...?

Interesting tower- were did you get it?

Well it would have to take something special to get me back. Have you managed to get started on the Stegs yet?

Have to admit I am not the biggest fan of the aquarium plants as basing as I always think they look a little too artificial, in a game with giants and dragons am I getting a little too bogged down in 'realism'?

This border force first, then a Steg for our GT force...

Me and Veldemere are going to GT doubles this April (on my Bday wknd, should be messy), we are taking a pretty fromage heavy LM / DE army...

Yep I dont like the ones I used for the Sallies, but I will be painting my 5th Ed sallies in a different way and I have found a new supplier of plants that look a lot better than the GW ones, but I know what you mean, which is why I am going to experiment with painting them as well, to try and get a more 'realistic' effect...

FatOlaf
16-03-2009, 21:15
So I squeezed some painting in during the last few hours of daylight, after I had finished work...

Skinks are progressing:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03113.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03116.jpg

Wash done, now need to pick out details and do highlights, nothing too fancy for these guys....

Took some advice and added some grass to the movement tray, think it worked out okay and gives it a less 'concrete jungle' look:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03114.jpg

Finally, I picked out the gold bits on the saurus (next time I am going to do the shields before I glue them on, very fiddly), leaving spear and highlights to do tomorrow before I go for the details:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03115.jpg

Tonight I am going to finish the Skinks movement tray and start painting the Terradon bases, O and do another storey on my tower.... stay tuned...

So we did okay, we came sixth out of 12 teams, which was 2 wins, 2 losses, both losses as per usual in the morning, where our brains never work..

The paint job was good enough to enter the team, the Terries fell apart during travel, so I spent the train journey performing emergency surgery on them.

They will now be painted properly as they are coming to the Doubles GT with me in April, So I will prioritise them and the skinks first and then do some stegs...

I have a top secret idea for the Stegs, so you will have to stay tuned for that..

Meanwhile, I shall finish the tower over the next couple of days and then paint it. It will be used for a capture the tower battle next wknd...

Quick Update, I have been a bit slack of late posting, Sorry..

I have 5 painting days left before the GT and I still have loads to do, 10 Blowpipe skinks, 4 Terries, a priest and the Warspear Steg, plus then I still have to do another 1400 points worth before the club challenge in May. So now is not the time for dawdling....

I got down to some work last night and had a few great ideas for my 2150 army, including something very special for my Slann (who I was not going to take to the challenge for comp reasons, but time pressure gives me no option, or at least that's my excuse).
I started work on his 'home' last night and attacked some blue polystyrene with a soldering Iron........ Along with doing the bases for my Blowpipe skinks and 5th Ed Sallies...

To add more pressure, I am also going to be the TO for my club's first ever open Tournament which will be on the 11th of July, in between that and the tournies, I am also moving house, so a lot on as you can imagine..

I will be painting furiously on Sunday and I will post up all the WIP piccies I have done so far......

Ooh almost forgot, the tower is finished, I just need to poly filla some of the gaps (bit of Orc grouting never hurt no one) and then painting will commence, nothing fancy, just a nice stone effect and lots of weathered moss etc... But it should look good when done...

JUST KEEP PAINTING!

I will.......:D

So here's what I got upto last night...

Spent ages drilling, filling and gluing to try and use magnets for my Terries...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03131.jpg

But they were not powerful enough, so instead I stuck a long plastic rod right up their jacksy's.....

FatOlaf
04-04-2009, 17:17
The rods will be cut to different sizes so that the Flappies can rank up...

Here's some WIP shots of my Slann's new home...........

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03134.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03135.jpg

Currently covered in glue, drying in the garden, ready for spray undercoating..

Was never truly happy with my Sallies, so I got some old 5th ed ones (much better models IMO) and made them some nice outcrop bases...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03138.jpg

And in this shot you can see the bases for my Blowpipe skinks and some models undercoated. These guys will be my Terry Riders as the usual models are too small IMO and have spears, which are sadly missing in the new book..

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03139.jpg

If I get time after the GT, I am going to model some rope nets with rocks hanging from their feet, but only if I get the time....

Tomorrow I am going to finish the details on the Cohort skinks and try to finish my BP skinks..

That will leave me the easter wknd to do the Steg / Terries and Priest, 4 solid days of painting, just hope my back can hold out...

More pics tomorrow...

Nice work, especially with the skinks. Love the highlights on their eyes, gives them depth and makes 'em more lifelike. Keep it up!

I've seen that trick beofre. But instead of terradons it was on pegusus knights.

I really love that salamander model then I do the current ones.

Keep it up man.

. Love the highlights on their eyes, gives them depth and makes 'em more lifelike.

I always find it's worth the effort to get the eyes right, good thing with the skinks is that they are nice and big....Saurus however, are another matter....

@ Dino - Yep I think the old Sallies are so much grander with the sail on their backs, much more freedom for colour galore....

Yeah, saurus and human eyes are terrible to paint @_@

WD 350 has some great tips on getting faces right, though, so those should clear up any issues with the eyes. Speaking of which, they also have a great article on quickly painting lizardmen. Give it a try, perhaps?

Shame it's all in their blue theme though..But I'm not really having a problem with the Saurus, so long as i remember to take the shields off first next time..

Thanks, it's got a lot to do with one of the elements....

And almost finished the Cohorts, even did the blooming teeth....
Tried mixing some purple ink with PVA to get a nice poison look for the Javelins. Lets see what it looks like when it dries....

Technically it's more of the technique than the actual color, especially how to make the chests look "ribbed". Good work on the skinks, btw. Fast and eye-catching.

I shall give it another read, like every issue of WD nowadays, there's never much in it of worth, so I dont concentrate too much on it...:(

Actually, I find WD very interesting. For one, the 'Eavy Metal masterclass tutorials are tremendously useful, and the basic painting techniques help get your army battle-ready. Best thing to do if you really find the rest of the mag useless is to borrow a copy from your friend and photocopy the painting articles.

Dunno if it infringes any copyright laws or anything, but as long as you don't sell it off I don't really see the harm in it.

For me the problem is I dont play 40K or LOTR and when the issue is 90% full of that, then I have zero interest. The Eavy metal stuff is good, but it tends to favour the model of the month or space marines.. I do pick up some bits and bobs, but it is in no way as good as it used to be ie the Paul Sawyer years...

Saying all that I still buy it every month, more to support GW than for a good read....

Great looking undead (love the unit fillers), Tig Tog and lizzies. Cool color scheme, especially the part with darkening your colors with bigger lizzies.
One thing though, perhaps it's just the light or I'm imagining things, but I think the scales on the priests back kinda look like octopus suction cups.

So 3 days to go and time is fast running out, I have decided to concentrate on the Steg and the Terries, and just do a basic drybrush job on the Howdah, as it's a lot more complicated than I though. It will just have to do.

Painting only gets me more points for the WPS comp in May, so I will work on it after the GT..

Anyway Steg so far:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03161.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03162.jpg

FatOlaf

Right I had to rush to get things finished, so did not get chance to post pics before I left.
We had a great time and got 3 wins, 3 losses and a draw, however the draw was in the last game and was down to 1 inch (I needed to roll a 4 instead of a 3), this would have meant 4 wins and 23rd place, instead we got 60th out of 116... So not bad bearing in mind how hungover we were the first 2 games which we lost...

Off to Sweden now for a week, but then I have another doubles the next day (sat after next) and then 12 days to do 1400 points for the club challenge, so lots of painting and pics to come (plus some repair work as one of my Terries got drop kicked)....:D

FatOlaf
03-05-2009, 13:38
Right back now, had some bad news whilst away on holiday and things might have to slow down on the ole painting front..
I am still going to the CC though and will borrow some minis if I cant paint..

But in the mean time, this bank holiday wknd I am painting away (while I can)

Did not make the one day doubles and had to make severe changes to my CC list as the comp level was so high.

Hence I now have to do some swarms and a Krox / skink unit, along with my slann..

If I get time I will be doing a baby steg as well, but I reckon this is wishful thinking on my part.

I wanna do my stegs right in time for the GT in October (I'm taking 5) and not rush them..

So there will be some pics soon, right now I'm stripping, assembling and creating some more bases..

Stay tuned..

Oh boy.. You have some balls, keeping a cat around your figures :D
The dude I share my appartment with, has a cat. A few days ago it strolled across my table and toppeled a few figures. Including a dwarf standard bearer, that I was working on, which landed on the floor.

the paint came of a few places, and the top of the banner is rather twisted. Man was I pissed. Now I've put it away. Lets see if I ever get to finish it .. grrr

Right 3 days to go and I have finally got back into the painting groove..
First up is my Steg, he still needs a lot of work as the howdah is only base coated but it will do for now...

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/fatolaf/DSC03194.jpg

I need to do a 26 strong unit of Skinks and krox, all running down steps again, you can also see the bases I am using for my Swarms, who will all be albino coming out of lava pools..
