So, in an effort to motivate me a bit more to actually finish one of my projects :D im gonna run a log on my Alpha Legion, seeing as they are the coolest army im currently working on.

The Concept is an early period army shortly before the Heresy, which allows me to use a few armour variants as well as the standard MkIV because variety is always nice.

Originally the army was based on the old Chaos dex, but as I wanted to add a sniper squad, and an all infiltrating army is impossible in the new dex, I switched it over to the marine Dex and the army list im currently using is floating around the relevant forum.

I should probably mention my design philosophy too, whilst I love the Heresy Era I am not a particularly "pedantic" modeler, so whilst the a Helemts and Chests will be correct (And I f I ever do Mk 5 or 6 the shoulders too) Re sculpting fifty kneepads would probably make me flip out and murder anyone who didnt notice them. Im also not sold on the (To my mind) utterly random assumption that anything Rogue Trader era is Pre Heresy. Ill use the models I like for bolters and such and I prefer the newer ones on marines. (guard is another matter entirely!).

Anyhow, seeing as black models are nigh on impossible to photograph (By me anyhow) in any detail, heres what ive done so far in plain plastic and resin...

My Commander
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Commanderfront.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/commanderback.jpg
I went for the double ended Power weapon a)For a bit of Variety and b)Because I had a buttload of mutilated Power swords lying around looking useless at the time. Its stright in reality i swear, its just that rear photo which makes it look skewed...

And his command Squad
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/commandsquad.jpg
A command squad is essential for two reasons, a)Its fluffy for Alphas not to have lone characters wandering around, they live and die as squads after all. and b) It means he can Infliltrate (Muahahahaha).

<Edit 17/12/08>
The Concept for this army remains unchanged throughout, but the models? Well, the army has effectively gone through 4 Codexes (2 Marine, 2 Chaos) since inception, and a few models got chopped after tabletop performace (I needed more powerfists!). Currently the Army is heading to the Tempus Fugitives events detailing the Heresy Era, although thats only the focus from Page3 onwards.

So yes, read on. And PLEASE comment, even if its criticism. Silence is soo much worse!

On bear in mind, there are definitely Legion spoilers throughout...

<Edit 20/5/09>
Well, the first stage of the army is complete, and has caned through the Great Crusade admirably...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/ullanorarmy.jpg

But Ofc that just means more to build! The Horus Heresy is coming in September, and ive got me a tasty Traitor ticket...

<Edit 27/4/10>
Well its been a while since ive been working on stuff for this army, but they are very much in the running for the TF Event in September, ill see how May goes and whether Painting White Scars drives me insane... Meh, thats a topic for another Plog!

Heres an army shot of finished stuff from September-ish (although the lighting in in cocks up colours its not too obnoxious in this one) its missing a few things though, which i will endeavour to update asap!

Well well, time flies! I think this picture kinda speaks for itself...

Continuing with detail shots of the Command Squad...
My Vet Sergeant, who looks far more dramatic than my commander o.O
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/CmdSgt.jpg
My Apothecary, who doesent quite look the part yet, hes got some gubbins on his belt which are difficult to see, but paint should make his role more obvious... (I used most of the Apothecary parts on my Ravenwing whilst this was a Chaos army... Doh!)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/apothecary.jpg
And a couple of regular Vets, the Twin Bolt pistol guy is a personal Fave of mine, and I do Love Meltaguns..
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/command1.jpg

Noserenda
22-09-2007, 12:10
Another Meltagun for extra Armour cooking, and a guy tossing a grenade to phys rep their Frags (And look cool)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/command2.jpg

Next My assault Squad, still in Mk3 for its superior close in protection.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/assaultsquad.jpg

And detail Shots...
My Sergeant, Originally my commander had a jump pack and lead this squad (In the chaos list) which is why this guy is in a "deferring" posture, but its still one which kinda oozes menace (At least the fist does...)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/assaultsergeant.jpg

Noserenda
22-09-2007, 12:10
The guy on the left was for a bit of Variety, checking the Auspex to see where all the damn infiltartors are! I added flamers to give a bit of punch against Hordes, and I like burninating things...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/assault3.jpg
I kinda imagine the guy on the left Strafing left as hes firing here. The Right guy used to be a (Terrible) Autocannon conversion, who got the Commander old Jump pack and an assualt armament when id had enough of its badness. He has a hand flamer for extra burntness.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/assault2.jpg
The Left hand guy is the twin of the above, but hes diving right! And this flamer i wanted firing down to catch all the buggers in his cone.

Next Up! Tactical Squad 1 (With Extra Plasma goodies)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tacticalsquad.jpg

And Detail Shots...
My Plasma gunners, for some reason I could never make the guns sit "perfectly" on these two, but eventually conceded I was after some illusionary Zen Plasma stance and went with these...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tactical1.jpg
Bolter guy #4271 and the Squad Sergeant, I avoided Veteran Sgts wherever plausible in this army to keep the Anonymity theme the Alphas have, but I do love the idea of Sergeants waving the men forwards with Chainswords...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tactical3.jpg

Noserenda
22-09-2007, 12:13
My knifemen! Both of these guys have Knives with your sentries throats written all over them...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tactical2.jpg

And Finally (For Now) My Devestators, Originally still in Mk3 because they were the Amy's Veterans (Infliltrating Tankhunters ftw). Now they just Infiltrate, oh and forgeworld bits are awesome, but im too poor to clothe an entire army in em! Why Missile Launchers? Well i have hundreds from previous armies (Im not a fan of Heavy weapons in Tac squads, except cheapo Heavy Bolters) and when they were tankhunters they were cheap, well now theyre flexible at least o.O
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/devastatorsquad.jpg

And in Detail
The Guy on the left is mid reload, but the pic doesent show it well, and another Chainsword waving Sergeant (Although he'll hopefully never use it...)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/devastator2.jpg

Noserenda
22-09-2007, 12:14
The Left most guy kinda illustrates the "Vet" look i was going for in the squad, looking grizzled as all hell, and alos carrying spare missiles like any good bolter boy in a devastator should. I imagine the guy on the right is examining his handiwork, and liking what he sees.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/devastator1.jpg
These are my Favorite Pair in this squad, the Left hand guy came together perfectly (so im guessing im gonna botch painting him) and the Right guy a)Has my favorite Mk2 helmet and b)Is righteously going for his sidearm, which is always cool.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/devastator3.jpg
And finally, well, another meatshield/ammo carrier o.O
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/devastator4.jpg

As for the next stage... Ive already picked up the sniper squad, im just considering what to do with them, id add shoulder pads, but I love the camo cloaks... Im thinking of using Mk5 Stylee helmets (A light helmet later used a a basis for Mk5 maybe?) but ill see how that looks, the heads may be waaaay out of scale...

Then ofc ive got to undercoat the lot of em, that just means finding my sprays (God I hate moving house).

It is a great start. I like that you tried to stay with Mk.4 and 5 as well as the first Mk.6 Powerarmours. But why did you absolutely stay with those when you are mixing the legs wildly with Mk.7 parts (those with kneepads)? Not enough Mk.6 ? :D

Thanks for all the encouragement so far guys! Ive gotten by scouts together over the weekend, although getting the camera off my mate will probably take long enough that ive gotten a few painted by then

As for the legs... Well, tbh whilst there are some differences between the various types of armour's legs I went with the decision to largely leave them aside from some strimming and inappropriate stars. The chests and helmets largely define the models, the knee pads seem a lot of work! (Extra respect for those that do them though!).

Also, Mk6 is my fave armour mark, and a majority of my 40k era marines wear it in complete suits, cutting down the number of spare bits I had :( I had originally planned a "Siege of the Emperors Palace" era Worldeater army, although that might be an idea for another time... Mind your Worldeaters are a popular choice, Alphas are a bit out of left field.

Just a quick update...

I have been working on the army, but getting a camera to prove it continues to prove troublesome :(

The Commander and first Tactical Squad are painted, and ive mostly finished my Terminator squad, just need to do green stuff on em.

But, a couple of questions for you folks out there first...

1. How should i be basing the army? I was originally considering a basic "brown field" approach, but now im considering "Martian Desert" so I can sling my Tech guard on as reinforcements for bigger games and not look silly. Or Possibly arctic, but I do hate snow flock :skull: What do people think?

2. Tanks, ive aquired a couple of Rhinos and a Whirlwind and seeing as ive got little use for APCs I was thinking of picking up a FW kit to spruce up at least one of the Rhinos. The two i had in mind were The Damocles Command Rhino or the Hyperion AA Whirlwind variant.

My problem is, I have no idea what these two do, or if they are effective enough to be worth my money (Im poor :D) Especially the AA tank as my mate has a Valkyrie based army which it could be potentially very useful against. Obviously dont post their rules, but a summary is ok isnt it?

Ofc if both are a bit choz ill order some pred sprunes.

Hey dude.

Can't answer your question I'm afraid as I don't have IA2.

Have you built your snipers yet? If not, I have a suggestion. All the Heresy era artwork of recon squads shows them as fully armoured marines with sniper rifles. I don't think the legions used scout armour in those days. Maybe you should look at building power armoured snipers and simply counts-as?

Just an idea. These are looking great, I'm looking forward to chopping them up with my wolves. ;)

For basing i wouldgo with some city scene textures.
One of my favourite alpha legion fluffs is from the IA. where they allow the rebels 7 days to build their forces in the city. then anhialate them in afew hours.
I always saw alpha as more a city scape fighters then desert/barrens where there is little to control and infiltrate!

Yar, I did contemplate it for some time, and magled more than a few helmets trying to get an armoured look but eventually just went for a de-aquillaed basic squad, who are now proving very frustrating to paint

The Alphas are coming together very nicely, Noserenda – that's a really nice rich blue you've got there, and the modelling of the force makes them hang together nicely.

Any particular plans for the force in terms of expansion and eventual size?

...and since this is an Alpha Legion log, I thought I'd kick off your obligatory Spartacus moment:

'I'm Alpharius!'

+++Edit+++
Hey, just spotted you're in Southampton – which reminds me; did that gaming area idea ever get off the ground? It'd be fun for my gaming group (the PCRC) to meet some new cats.

...and on a similar note, the Tempus Fugitives are holding a big ol' Pre-Heresy campaign weekend next year. Would you be interested in coming along with the Alpha Legion? It's in May 2009, so it'd be a good incentive to get the force done. Since you're in Southampton, I'm sure the PCRC would be more than happy to have you along when we meet up for painting/gaming.

Cool thanks for the color thing, its always a thing with the Alphas, Purple or Blue :D The Force is currently hanging around 2k Points in the old codex with quite a lot of Additions and more planned!

Since this last update ive built and Undercoated a Rhino Based Assault Squad and a Mounted Veteran (Now Vanguard i guess) squad, a pair of Predators and ive finally finished those thrice cursed Scouts! (Who now have wood elf heads ftw). With the Command Squad now painted (Although im sure i botched the blue after the long gap :skull: ) and the Devvy squad half done...

Needless to say my camera monkey needs a whipping  More updates soon!

Cool beans, the gaming room is in a nearly finished State needing Electrician-ing to open legally but im up for games when possible! The Tempus Fugitives campaign is exactly whats inspired me to dig the guys out again after Pete Mason mentioned it, so im planning whacking the force up to 3k in some capacity!

Aha! With the stars in alignment ive managed to snag a camera and an internet ready PC! Which means another piccy session rather than dull theory!

Firstly a workspace shop, although this is actually the fourth house ive been working on these guys in (!) and by far the worst work area (I miss the massive metal desk just under a window i had a while back)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Workspace.jpg

And some crap shots of the (Now) vangaurd Squad and Second assault Squad, both also have Rhinos but they were down my shop looking threatening near the blood bowl pitches.

Vangaurds
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Vangaurd.jpg
Ive gone for a brutal assault/breach look, lots of Chainaxes and Mk2/3 for extra close in protection. Although you really cant see much due to my crap camera skills and black undercoat! Luckily it seems the new codex will afect this squad the least, although they may pick up some new members from less legal outfits.

Assault 2
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/MechAssault.jpg
Another earlier armour squad, this time in mroe uniform armour as they are less old school. This squad is probably going to be wibbled a bit due to new codex attack. Cursed 10 man fetish!

And on a Vehiclular Note...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/PreTurrets.jpg
My predator turrets, the rest of them is with the Rhinos, but for some reason I have the turrets to hand... The are fitted with Autocannon Turrets and Las Sponsons for Anti Tank/Heavy Infantry Duty and both have HK's to assist with that. No anhiliators pre Heresy!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/2Troops1HQ.jpg

Couldnt decide which shot was blurier!

First up the scouts, which caused me no end of "Painters Block" and made me shelve the whole project for a while with their annoying-ness. Needless to say no more scouts! In the army these represent a unit of Operatives supporting the Legion rather than new recruits. Because I hate the standard Scouts heads (A Key factor in the slow painting) I ripped them off and replaced them with Wood Elf hoods and an old Middenheimer beard.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/ScoutsFinished.jpg

Heres a Shot of the cloaks, i danced around dozens of schemes before going for the Drab drape look, the army will eventually be desert based in this scheme so they blend better.

Scout Closeups (Damn i suck at cameras, ill use camera monkey again next time)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Scouts1.jpg
On the Left we have the Sergeant, whose meant to be ditching the rifle to get some righteous chainsword-ing on. And one of the snipers, whose looking up to see what the commotion is.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Scouts2.jpg
The first two are both shooting, one standing one crouching, all very simple. The last is staring in satisfaction on some kill, and looking like the Sergeant to all and sundry!

Next up is the command Squad which has two issues.1.Id left is so long i got the colours wrong (They are slightly too Ultra Blue to me) and 2. One of them is for the chop as the new book inexplicably limits their size to 5 men...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/CommadnSquad.jpg
I left out the Champion and Banner as they stike me as "Un Alpha Legion" although If I build a display base of some kind ill whack a banner on that, I just dont think they would bring it into the field with them.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Cmd3.jpg
This is the Sergeant and Apothecary, both sporting Power fists after a regular opponent of mine frequently jumps dreadnoughts on this squad (Because his captain is a massive girl). I went partial white on the Medic to make him obvious as the model itself is just an old metal backpack and some newer parts added near the belt, again, im not sure the Alphas like everyone knowing who is who.

The "Meat marines"! One of these will be farmed off to a Tactical squad, im thinking Grenade boy, as he actually has a bolter. On that note, none of this squad has their Right pads painted yet, until i replan the army and know which squad they end up in.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Cmd2.jpg
And heres the melta guns, always serve me well as this quad smashes anything tough in the opposing force. Although their inflitrating days are over im considering coverting a proto-Razorback with twin Reapers, which sounds awesome in my head...

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/ApocDetail.jpg
Another shot of the Apocthecaries back, with some battle damage and another handpainted Shoulderpad, although im not sure hows its come out all together.

Now some a WIP shot of my devestators, who are now finished (Mostly) except again the Right shoulders pending reassignment. More shots on my photobucket but given their crap quality ill save my post count!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/DevWIP.jpg
In this you can see I work up from Storm blue to get the purple recesses/hints which puts me firmly on the indigo line.

So yeah, thats the Progress so far I now have in total:

Commander*
6 man Command Squad*
Commander Fortronus/BOLS Special Character
5 Man Terminator Squad (Need more, or to swap out one of their 2 Reapers)
6 Man Tactical Squad w/2 Plasmas* (Gonna be the basis of 2 squads)
5 Man Scout/Operative Squad w/Snipers*
7 Man Assault Squad w/Jump packs +2 Flamers (need more old skool jump packs!)
8 Man Assault Squad In rhino
8 Man Vangaurd Squad in Rhino
7 Man Devestator Squad w/Missile Launchers
2 Predator Destructors w/Lascannons

Which has Previously been about 2000 Points with some fiddling and gear.

Now, with a new codex im needing to reorganise the army and I need it up to 3k Apocalypse size for a campaign event in May i hope to attend, with that in mind im considering adding the following...

Another Tactical Squad
Modified Reaper Razorback
Stenguard, Now Shooty veterans are plausible, i like the feel of them...
Drop Pods, Attack from ALL angles!
Aircover, I like lightnings but they arent PH, i also like Thunderbolds and Hellblades, depends if Hellblades are PH or not, so i need to see IA Update apparently. Either way itll be a pair of planes if my wallet allows!
Fellblade, Big tanks are always a good idea... And Probably saves me money!

Ofc Tempus Fugitives are liable to have one or more Special units for the Alphas, possibly even stealth squads or Somesuch...

Gah, Decisions have to wait anyhow as im broke, but suggestions on the above are certainly appreciated!

Plenty of updates due to dogsitting giving me inordinate amounts of time

Unfortunately it turns out for some reason I cant upload off the house line though :cries: But a text update will do for now for context anyway, especially as id typed most of it before trying to upload.

Devestators finished, Assault squad 5/10 and Fortronus looking a little bluer :D

I also got a hold of a copy of the New starter (Owning a retailer makes in insanely cheap) fobbing the Orks off on my partner ive got a new influx of Marine-age.

Ive Mk 4-ised a bunch of Marines and the Dreadnought and the Captain has been mildly converted into First Captain Pech (You can never have enough captains). The Terminators are awaiting heads to take my force to 2 legal squads (Damn heavy weapon restrictions, 2 Reapers look badass). And one has been reborn as Stealth Sergeant Decimus from the Fugitves pack.

At this point id like to shamelessly admit to stealing ideas off various members of Warseer, but i cant remember all the relevant names! When i can upload the pictures itll be clearer but id like to thank all the people ive robbed ideas off for the inspiration!

New codex shenanigans have resulted in the below list o stuff:

Alpha Legion Mk3 (Revenge of the Cabal)
(Not including any campaign specific characters/stuff)

Captain Mathias Trakker (The names a reference...) 140pts
w/Relic Blade, Digital Weapons

Command Squad Alpha 160pts
w/2x Meltagun, Power Fist

Tactical Squad Bravo (x10) 220pts
w/Plasma Gun, Heavy Bolter, Power Fist, Plasma Pistol

Tactical Squad Charlie (x10) 195pts
w/Plasma Gun, Missile Launcher, Power Weapon

Operative (Scout) Squad Zulu (x5) 90pts
w/Sniper Rifles, Camo Cloaks

Terminator Squad Delta (x10) 470pts
w/2x Reapers/Assault Cannons 2x Chainfist

Dreadnought Bayushi 105pts

Assault Squad Echo (x10) 235pts
w/2x Flamers, Power Fist

Assault Squad Foxtrot (x10) 245pts
w/2x Plasma Pistols, Power Fist
No Jump Packs, Mounted in Rhino Foxtrot 35pts

Vanguard Squad India (x6) 200pts
w/Sgt Thunder Hammer, Power Weapon, Power Fist
Mounted In Rhino India 35pts

Devastator Squad Kilo (x7) 182pts
w/4x Missile Launcher

Predator Lima 130pts
w/Lascannons, Hunter Killer

Predator November 130pts
w/Lascannons, Hunter Killer

Total 2577 Points

Planned additions currently are a pair of Razorbacks (One with Twin Reapers for sure) and a 6 man Sterngaurd squad, plus 5 Tacticals to go with Decimus. These will all be "stealthed" up in some way for Tempus Fugitives recon games. Ideas Welcomed! (As im at kinda a dead end-ish).

Im also planning on an Alpharius/Omegon Model based on Apologists Truescale marines, should make him a tad bigger without being monstrous.

PLUS! If anyone has a couple of Spare Original Ancient Metal Jump packs i need 3, damn lack of bitz service *grumble*

Aha! Finally Updates! In between Nefarious Cylon plotting (The New Galactica boardgame, which is awesome btw) I managed to get my army, a Camera and a nice base all in the same place to photograph. Camera monkey was unfortunately unable to assist due to epic fail but due to an idiot proof camera I managed 50% usable shots!

As a bonus theres also some of my Skitarri stuff at the end too.

Well, into the Updates, Finished stuff first methinks.

Command Squad. Heres the Final Lineup, Meltas for making things go pop, and a Power fist to make sure. Its moderately cheap, but effective.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/commandfinal.jpg

And a shot Camera Monkey Took to show me the Camera of my Apothecary who still rather contraversialy totes his Power Fist (Well would you arge with an enraged medic with a Power fist?).
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/apothecary-1.jpg

Another Character here, Captain Fortronus from the BOLS Campaign pack. Sneak Hidden powerfists are always a cool idea frankly, and heres him painted...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/fortronus1.jpg

As he is meant to blend in (He basically counts any unit hes with as a retinue) I batch painted him in with the Assault marines. It gives a slightly rougher job than id like but combined with the pose, he really does kinda fade into the background. Sucess!

Devestators Next
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/devestatorfinished1.jpg

Im happy with the unit, although I suspect they are slightly darker, not that thats entirely a bad thing ofc, It helps with the colour ambiguity. I do wish id given their Sergeant a Power weapon now, with all the flanking that goes on in 5th, but re converting a painted model could well be heresy... Anyhow Heres another shot.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/devestatorfinished1.jpg

My first Rhino mounted Assault squad. Im very happy with this unit (Although the eyes still bug me). The Skin especially clicked with them. Heres the whole squad.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/AssaultFinished.jpg

First Combat Squad, Damn, the photo clipped the Melta bomb off the right hand side of the shot.. .Needless to say the Marine is kinda swinging it to bear. Annoyingly they cant have melta bombs any more, but maybe its a really big krak grenade?

Second Half, and thanks to Tom for extra Beserker bits, i felt some Chainaxes needed to be in there, and i love that helmet! This shot also has a better show of my Plasma Cells, although they look more Green in real life im sure...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/assaultfincs2.jpg

So heres my painted models advancing down our snowy track...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/army1.jpg

Covered my Snipers and Devestators, and Backed by Assault and Tactical Troops...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/army2.jpg

And another down road shot, the Base is a simple 2'x2'Snowy terrain base, backed by polystyrene sheets. Although im thinking of doing some backdrops as this (And the mars base later) will be for displaying stuff in our shop.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/army3.jpg

Basing Question. Does the white go well with the blue? Do the Scouts look ok? Im contemplating snow bases now, even though they are the devil...

OK now the WIP Bench...

Vangaurd are up first, they are midway through Painting. Im actucally doing them slightly differently to the rest of the Army. They (And the Sterngaurd) will be wearing the Darker "Stealth" armour worn by Omegon in Legion, and so will be a touch more Purple. Anyhow, bear with me. The original squad was armed for AT Operations, so Thunder Hammer and Power Fist, plus a Power weapon to keep pesky infantry off. Its still not a bad lineup! Fortronus tends to hang with these guys in a Rhino, but usually in bigger games, they arent cheap!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/VangWIP.jpg

Now Dreadnought Bayushi! I have shamelessly stolen the Torso idea from someone, but i forget WHO! In any case, credit to someone else. But I had a "free" black reach dreadnought, and couldnt use it as it was...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/DreadnoughtWIp.jpg

Now a Master of the Forge! I know! Most PH rule sets wont let me use him! But I had the idea for the model, and a spare Techmarine torso lying around (ish) So walla! Hes got a conversion beamer for zappy goodness, and an axe because it looked good.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Techwip1.jpg

The Conversion beamer didnt come out exactly as I planned, but its close enough to my vision to work, still needs a wee bit of filling maybe, Cameras always make things look worse!

And heres the back, I need a plan to make the cable change a bit less jarring, possibly a wrap around cable?
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/techwip3.jpg

The Three New Recruits for my Jumppack squad... Still need Jumpapcks ofc! They were the first AOBR models i converted (Although the one on the left is from Macragge) And they are all simple eagle removals and hand swaps. Idve gone for full arms but im massively short on shoulderpads! And i think they work fine.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/newassaultwip.jpg

Heres a cool one... Stealth Sergeant Decimus from the TF Pack. Hes a variant Telion Basically, only for a Tactical Squad! The Helmet is meant to be a Prototype piece of kit, with cool sam fisher style goggle array. And exhaust free breather...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/decimusfrontwip.jpg

The Stalker Pattern Bolter is a simple muzzle swap from a Scout sniper rifle onto a Dark Angel bolter I had lying around, plus standard gunsight.

On to the Tactical Squads... Heres Tactical Bravo as it stands...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tacticalbravo.jpg

And heres the New Recruits, Courtesy of Black reach and a whole load of swearing...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tacitcalswip1.jpg

Ok Left to right... First up the Launcher, I suspect the helmet is actually another random Mk7 Mod, but with some gouges from a Knife, its pretty close to MK4 Imho, and it saves me a FW head. The Next was a prototype, instead of chopping the model in half, I gouged his chest out an replaced with a plastic MK4-6 style chest, it looks ok, but is a lot more work! On the right we have an example of Black Reach legs with FW HEad and Chest, which is what most these marines are.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tacticalswip2.jpg

This Shot is my sculpting efforts. The Sarge lost his eagle and gained some new pipes! Now im not good with GS, but this turned out Alright. A Nice arm swap netted him a Power Sword too. Marine 2 is a pain. He actualy has a full sculpted Mk4 Chest and groingaurd, but the bolter covers it all! Admitting defeat (It was late) I glued it in place, the next morning I prised it off and the GS as dented and dry... Ah well... Hes meant to be shouldering Forwards, but the pose is slightly off I think.

Lots of Newbies here...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tacticalswip4.jpg

More closeups. I like the left model, getting in for a shivving! No.2 Is another Standard Bolter boy. And 3 is obviously a heavy weapons chap! I used the CSM Version of the heavy bolter because it seemed more "insurgent" in fact all my other heavy weapons are Launchers, so its all simple gear, no crazy backpacks of doom!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/tacticalswip5.jpg

Left Marine here is meant to be ditching Bolter for pistol, I dont know if I like it, I suspect he looks off due to having only 1 shoulder pad.. Plus 2 more Bolter Marines. The "Head Budget" called for another bare head in the squad, adn this was the only one to hand, but I think the comlink is a bit sergeanty, im thinking of a bionic eye to blend into it tho. Opinions?

Another Black Reach Addition, i was originally going to use the model for a statue, but inspiration struck! And he have First Captain Pech (Ala Legion) as his TF rules are now worth taking! (Hes the only way to get Legion Tactics in the recon games...)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/pechwip1.jpg

Hes a bit Flasher than the other Characters, who are deliberately not showy(ish). Given that this is the Crusade Period, i assume he's dressing up for my allies benefit. He IS first captain after all.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/pechwip2.jpg

Heres some progress on the Terminators, all Shouldered up and with most the greening done, Im now working on the second half of the unit (When i get their heads!). They also have Plasticard strips hanging down as kilts on some, and shouldergaurds on all, but stupidly you can barely see it here! DOH!

Oh definately, Theres always an Alpha somewhere! Feel free to steal! First thing I thought of when I saw that helmet was Sam Fishers goggles, just needed a model for it!

Im proud of my heavies, although greenstuff still isnt perfect, they turned out good.

For Sternguard, I was contemplating Modding Dark Angel bodies and Templar Torsos to get a Swarthed in robes look, but given my budget and tmie constraints (Gotta get em done by May!) Im thinking basic Bolter conversions, I have a load of Storm bolter arms off the old Space Hulk terminators lying around somewhere for box magazines...

More Updates! Not so massive this time !

First up... Primarchs!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/AlphariusandOmegon-1.jpg
Alpharius and Omegon, pretty much assembly stage finished.

Rear Shot
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Primarchsrear.jpg
Note the Kit and Melta Bombs to destroy their Hourglass Figures!

Aaaaand a Scale shot with the Latest version of First Captain Pech (Now with combi Melta!)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Primarchscaleshot.jpg

Now the boring blurb. Alpharius sets some interesting issues, he has to stand out, but also blend in... To that end, I built them as Truescale marines (Thanks to the usual suspects Apologist, Doghouse and Synapse!) and cheaply whacked them on rocks to make them even taller! Their kit is on first glance Mk4 Plate, but in reality its uber atrificer kit that looks like Mk4. Cunning,

Armament Wise, "Alpharius" Has a Sword and Bolter, which is roughly what he uses in the books, and a common thing to carry when he replaces an average Sergeant, "Omegon" has lightning Claws, as hes expected to replace a Terminator in my Deathblow mission force.

Hmm, that makes less sense if you dont know the TF pack... Alpharius deploys kinda like a Greater Daemon, dramatically shouting "IM Alpharius!" (And making your opponent poo himself and write that squad off...). He however, takes the Weapons of the model he replaces. Thus Power Sword (From Sergeants) and Claws (From Assault Terminators). Deathblow is a Scenario where 1000pts of Elite Badasses go head to head. Its fun!

Heres that Sentinel Servitor I mentioned previously, its active Camo appears to still be working, of 20+ Photos this is the only clear one, and i use that term lightly...

Hehe indeed, ive not done much work on them since (I went for easy boring stuff since) but soooon...

Righto, had update planned for tonight but camera monkey had to sleep prior to uploading the shots :o

But yeah, this isnt a complete waste of a post as im hoping to pick folks brains... (Mmmm Tasty Brains) Bascially I really need to decide on bases soonish as I have to get the bulk of the Army finished by May, and the 16 Operatives I have awaiting paint need a camo scheme which preferably matches the bases...

Ive narrowed it down to three good choices and a cop out:

1. Snow Bases, the blue seems to look good on the Snow board i usually use to take photos on. Unfortunately I discovered whilst basing my old Khador force that Im not a snow flock fan, so an alternative would be bonza.

2. Jungle Bases, My good buddy and Business partner has a Jungle based Stormtrooper Airborne army which looks good and they will moderately frequently be in proximity which means Synergy is nice. Im also considering an Airborne Catachan army at some point and then they can mix nicely. The basic idea is various green flocks, bark and aquarium foliage sticking up from place to place. More work (And im an idle bugger) but good overall effect, and minimal painting. Also, most tables are green.

3. Desert Bases, Were my original plan. I do like Desert Camo and it goes well with Blue afaik, but could be a bit bland and it means they stand out on every table known to man. :skull:

Plus Ofc any genius ideas people have, my colour theory isnt my strongest point!

But yes, coming later on Wednesday night:

WIP Operative Squads
WIP Halycon/Damocles/Whirlwind
WIP Inigo Pech
WIP Primarchs (Hopefully with non fuzzy photos this time!)

I'M ALPHARIUS!

I absolutely love that rule, and hope that all the Alpha Legion players bellow it at the top of their lungs when their Primarch(s) deploy. :)

Really looking forward to the campaign weekend, and seeing these guys. Having followed the WIPs, it's great to see how well the army hangs together. It's a really uniform feel that fits the Alphas perfectly.

As to basing, I'd suggest the jungle style. It's the one that seems to have caught your imagination the most, and that always leads to the best results. Not only that, but it'll look great to have the stealthy Alphas lurking in the trees... :)

Better pics below (As soon as flood control and pic limit allow)

They are built around the Terminator Lord legs, slightly reposed and greened up to resemble power armour. Then an assault Torso bulked up a bit with some Terminator arms and the twin heads.

Ive got to credit Doghouse, Synapse and Apologist for excellent inspiration and guides!

As to basing, I'd suggest the jungle style. It's the one that seems to have caught your imagination the most, and that always leads to the best results. Not only that, but it'll look great to have the stealthy Alphas lurking in the trees...

Oh definately, and I particularly like palming the Alpharius model and shouting it mid sentance while talking about reserves... :D

Also dead keen for the weekend, the dealine has really helped keep my army together even if its a pale shadow of your masterpiece! Hehe, but thanks for the praise!

Think I will go with Jungle bases, you are right now i look at it, ive certainly thought about them more, which is probably a good sign.

(voltarian);3449545']really cool ideas and i like your conversions.

I shall be watching this carefully! :D

Why thanks, enjoy the real updates!

And on that note ok, heres the promised update...

From the top, Operatives! Overall I wanted this squad to look like IG Vets geared up to Legion Standards. Coincidentally they could also be used as Vets in the new book ive heard...

Theres a little bit more work to do on them, mostly adding bags and gear etc, but heres the basic squads.

Squad 1 (Shotty Cell)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/ShottyOperativesfull.jpg

Working left to Right:

I wanted at least one big knife in the squad, which the leftmost man fits admirably. The First Launcher trooper I had diving for belt grenades for the personal touch, I had to think fast with these as I had planned to use the normal Cadian arms, but the scout torsos were too fat! I also love his helmet, filed down from the Men at arms set. The Sergeant is next, utilising a Marauder head i wanted to use one of the scopes so he looks like hes actually leading the team rather than sword waving. And lastly we have a basic trooper, sporting another men at arms head. He looks way more badass irl.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/shottyoperatives1.jpg

With this Launcher I decided to go with a hand signal for the left arm, very spec ops. The First of many hairy heads makes an appearence here, i hate the scout heads so much I couldnt use any of the buggers, which made finding 16 spare heads fun! The Last two are both similar conversions using sniper bodies, Shotty arms and Woodelf heads, turned out well imho.

Next up, Op Squad 2 (Hell Cell!)
These guys all carry Hellguns, which I converted from Sniper rifles and Lasgun Flash hiders. Just a simple lip and replace job, but looks pretty good.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/helloperativesfull.jpg

Going over again left to right:

Crouching guy shooting, I decided to use both crouched poses in this team, as the Hellgun conversion was much easier than the Shotgun one on them, this guy is popping off a shot. Next up, the Sergeant looks much better from the front, his pose and head really came together for me! First Meltagunner looks nice and grizzled with his marauder head and all too keen Chainsword waving. Number 2 I managed to get a two handed grip on his weapon and contraversially used the Men at Arms friar tuck head, I ummed and ahhed for ages but eventually went with it. If nothing else it makes me chuckle...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/helloperatives1.jpg

Another Middenheimer head here and a good shot of the Hellgun. This next croucher is a shaved Cadian hat and hes shouting and using a bayonet (Not that this shot shows it...) Next in line is my Hamlet tribute... Hes holding an Ork skull and talking to it... Ahem, so at the end he have a last aiming pose in cloak and hood.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/helloperatives2.jpg

Next up we have my Halcyon/Damocles/Whirlwind
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/halyconwip.jpg

The two turrets are Interchangeable based on what I need as both vehicles have their uses. Ive got to comment on the Radar dish btw, next to no flash, hold together without glue and it generally shiny couldnt ask for better from FW, which is nice!

While im on Vehicles ive finished my rhinos to a base standard, im thinking of adding more weathering but first I need to pick a basing style!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/rhinosfront.jpg

Freehanded the proper Legion Symbol onto the sides too, it was easy enough I might come back to the Shoulder pads and do them proper too...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/rhinosside.jpg

Im also so happy with the Crazy drivers face came out nice, although the red underlighting less so
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/indiaface.jpg

More Terminators now, these guys still need greenstuff and more plasticard but I like to think its hand to tell theres Black Reach Terminators under there...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/2terminatorsb.jpg

On the Left here we have my Version of Sheed Ranko from the TF pack, which gives me in total 11 Terminators with 2 Sergeants so ive got flexibility (And Heroic Intervention if needed...)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/2terminatorsa.jpg

More PIP here, Inigo Pech (Ala TF) about half done. Still need to pick a cloak coolour if anyone has ideas?

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/sergeantswip.jpg

Loving the use of lots of Mk4 armour.

Consider the idea for a proto-razorback with twin reaper autocannons nicked!

Do you still have Red Scorpions pads lying around? I'm needing one pair of the sergeant pads (the ones with the raised Mk2/3 rims). I can swap you a resin Mk4 torso I have spare if you like.

Ta Dude, will probably have another update in a week or so (Touch wood!), the Terminator Shoulders are Dreadnought Shins, specifically the Dark Angel ones I had left over from various Bike based projects. The Heads are indeed Chaos Warrior ones, with some random bare heads and a couple from the Chaos Terminator Lord for variety :chrome:

Im a big Mk4 fan too, and at some point I hope to get that Razorback built but certainly feel free, its too cool an idea to bury :chrome:

Cool beans, i turned a squad and a bit of Pre Posed guys into most of my Tactical Marines with a lot of swearing and resin :D

Happy to share too, technically the blue in the army is painted 3 different ways due to me running out of the OOP Storm Blue and some shenanigans with the Vanguard, but the main way ive done it as follows...

1. Black Unndercoat
2. Regal Blue with a Spot of Storm blue* Base
3. Regal Blue with a Spot of Ultramarines Blue** and Storm over all but deep recesses
4. Adding more Ultra blue up to roughly 60/40 Regal/Ultra big highlight
5. Add more Ultra for another highlight
6. Pure Ultra Blue of the Very Edges of stuff

Theres usually a bit more Ultra Blue on things as im a lazy sod when correcting slips from other areas :D

One thing to bear in mind is that the Ultramarines blue tends to overpower the Regal blue really easily, so keep an eye on the mix!

*I suspect the Storm blue is half Placebo, but a spot of purple would probably work
**My ultramarines Blue is out of an Old Hex Style paint pot, it may not be the same as its Descendant!

Had the Thread open to stare at some pictures (Its easier than excavating my cases and making room on the desk!) but the army is now Largely complete and should (Touch wood!) be ready this Thursday and all based and everything!

Me and the Other Team Bunker chaps should be heading down that night to show off and see the whole group (7 Players) with their 3kish forces plus getting Camera Monkeys to get decent shots of everything for posterity.

IE Thursday night there should be a big fat update on here...

Yup its an old GW paint, not sure when it was discontinued exactly but mine is in one of the old Screw tops. Its a dark blue/indigo, theres probably some basecoated pics in the plog somewhere that show it over black...

There may be an equivalent somewhere, I hear theres a website which shows equivalent paints between ranges but ive lost the bookmark :skull:

Nice one mate, the more the merrier!

Due to me having to cane out terminators tonight, and my abject faliure with Toms camera heres the following shots of our Pre Campaign get together and slackfest.

First up the assembled Primarchs of our group, Alpharius and Omegon in finished form, the Angron I built and Painted on commission for my buddy and finally Mortarion, who i had nothing to do with...

Too true! :D Cheers mate, the weekend went pretty well, I learned Klaw Stompas are easier to kill than my new most hated thing MEKBOY STOMPAS  Damn lifta droppas...

I led our Battlegroup, the glorious 215th Expedition to a mid range in the Imperial Forces, we did well in most rounds, but unfortunately the 3k Doubles saw us hammered by Orks across the board pretty much, ah well!

My Personal Tally...

Game 1 Recon Doubles: We pulled a draw out of this one, time limits and an Ork Objective covered in Sluggas and Grots were a bugger to shift, but then so was my Tactical Marines and Allied Linebacker Raven Guard Assault Marines!

Anticipating a 2 Objective game on short time to end in draws our Battlegroup was set to Defensive Stance, which meant Draws were as good as wins though at least!

Game 2 Main Battleforce: A 2k solo matchup against an Awesome converted Chaos Marine Army using Dinosaurs for tanks and Alpha Level Psykers on massive scenic (And lightning/lava hurling) as Baneblades (Though not in this game!) a real treat to play against. Unfortunately for my opponent the Dice Gods were on my side and it was a pretty crushing victory for the Alphas!

Aggressive Stance pulled in a mighty 4 vps for the taskforce.

Game 3 Heavy Assault Doubles: 6k Points of Orks including a pair of Mekboy Stompas... The game didnt go well with the Stompas annihilating our armour and general bad rolls and slow play didnt help, especially on reserves as over half my army never turned up!

While my Iron Hands allies smashed anything they got into, our troops choices took a beating and we realised around the start of turn 3 that we had to rely on Operatives finally arriving on Turn 4, and then the Orks somehow ignoring them, so with those variables and a general miserable attitude on my part we conceded.

I hate Stompas sooooo much. (Although it retrospect I did make a few tactical errors, which I have since learned from...)

Game 4 Recon: Back in Sunday morning and still half asleep I had an enjoyable and fairly close game against an Eldar Biker force. Playing for the Draw due to defensive stance we basically changed ends!

Operatives finally did some damage this time! Seems they like killing Eldar as later games confirmed! (But they dont like 3 Destructors while doomed...). On Defensive stance again I pulled in 2 VP

Game 5 Deathblow! : Clearly this game my Terminators forgot to bring their armour, as they went down in a hail of Shuriken fire like a bunch of Guardsmen... Omegon nearly pulled back the game, but eventually succumbed to an Avatar of Khaine in an Epic duel atop a pile of dead Harlequins and Jetbikes!

Game 6 Heavy Assault: Again against Eldar (But 3 Very different Armies, this one was Lots of Skimmers and Aspect Warriors) a game which swung both ways at times with me blowing off His Scorpions big cannon of doom on my first turn and a kind and beneficent god guiding my reserves into moderately useful places!

A late game rush of Fire Dragons and Banshees nearly scuppered my designs, but stalwart work from my Terminators and Alpharius put paid to their nefarious schemes, although if the game had run to turn 6 it was all in the balance still (Darn Skimmers! Just DIE!)

Aggressive stance this round meant I scored another 4 VPs!

Overall I pulled in 12VPs for the cause out of a possible 24, which is alright really. The 215th placed roughly at the top of the middle amongst the Imperium im told, which aint bad either!

All in all a good series of games and an Excellent event run my Tempus Fugitives and Warhammer world. Id heartily recommend their events, but they already run at capacity!

And this isnt the End... The next event runs in September, and that means a new pack, new units and new mayhem... Plus maybe ill finally build those Sternguard and Razorback!

Oh and Primarch Honour Guard Rock HARD, im thinking a Unit of 3 with Relic Flails called the Heads of the Hydra would be cool, but the gamer in me wants a larger unit, hmmm we'll see I guess. I suspect a Large banner for them may be in order, even If I rarely use it in game. Far too many people tought I was playing Ultramarines! (Damn Green markings on blue!).

Other mad schemes include a unit of Slave Psykers chained together made out of Flagellants and possibly the Kaban Engine, that would be cool...

Aha, edited them in now! I scored about 50% of the possible overall, ofc due to a couple of defensive stances we were technically limited to 18pts so its closer than it looks. Although next time more aggressive stances seem a good idea.

What was the worst thing about the Stompas? Was it your lack of superheavys, or just a lack of AT, or even a lack of luck?

What was it like playing with the Primarchs?

Stompas are unfortunately excellent value for points, and common as muck now theres a plastic kit! Pretty much every Ork army had at least one! Klaw Stompas are rude due to their 24" Assault threat(!) and 7 S D attacks, while still packing a horrible AP3 Giant flamer! Mekboy Stompas Lifta Droppas are just unfun, and shields are a pain! But the Horror stories about Kustom Stompas are the scariest, Bellyguns killing entire armies...

I had alright AT and scored well against Klaw stompas and imperial superheavies in practice games, but Mekboy Stompas just anhilliated my predators before they could act, even while redeployed on a refused flank! My Devestators also refuse to damage Super heavies, but thats a luck thing :D.

Primarchs are a lot less scary than they seem tbh. They can and will smash the crap out of anything they can get close to, but have a very limited affect on the battlefield compared to a super heavy with its multiple heavy weapons able to freely target different units.

On Alpharius and Omegon? They are a nice Gimick, but for amongst the most expensive Primarch they really lack punch, no re-rolls to hit means they lose a lot of attacks even if the rest wound and their entry mechanic isnt as flexible as people imagine :chrome: But definately fun to use!

IM ALPHARIUS!

I think that's brilliant!:D Exactly in the spirirt of the Legion! ;)

Im currently adding studs to a Spare Pre posed missile launcher guy I have to make him Mk5. He may end up in this army, or be a test piece for the White Scars I plan for next May's battle for Earth event (The Alphas weren't there!).

Lying around my workbench are some tech marine bits (They sent me bodies rather than axes once and let me keep them) as I may swallow my pride and stick a tech marine in the army for Alpharius to come out of so he can have servo arms... :cheese:

Painting wise I still have my dreadnought who I hope to include next time, and that master of the forge, who is a low priority as I cant use him!

Also planned at some point when i have a weekend day off work is getting a series of decent photos of everything finished so far, hopefully fully based too!

White Scars? Are you really up for painting 3000 points worth of white power armour?

Yar, we have a plan where 6-10 of our local group all build White Scars of various stripes, based the same the army should look fairly seamless and if we get everyone there will be most of a chapter...

For my part im cheating and planning lots of Terminators, possibly some Jetbike riding Primarch honour guards and some Land Raiders using Baneblade track units (Idea stolen from Doghouse!). Smaller army = win and we already have 3 confirmed biker hordes, thought id go for a more modern "Cavalry" :D

(Plus all those Ravenwing sprunes will have Dread shins for Terminator Shoulders! Win!)

Righto, I have a plan!

The next event consists of four types of game; Vanguard (which is the unholy lovechild or Recon and Deathblow), Planetstrike (Which is still vague) and a reduced Heavy Assault force (Down to 2500pts Booooo!).

For Vanguard if got a nasty list tested true involving Bloodletters and Scout Bikers (With token Tactical Squad and Dreadnought). Which involves painting my Dreadnought and building 3 Scout Bikers and 30 Bloodletters!

For Heavy Assault force im planning something completely different. TANKS. Specifically the Mobile Armoured Strike Cell! Which will involved a Dozen or so Predators, Rhinos and Vindicators, a couple of Speeders and a Legion Hellhammer (Subject to change!).

So, with my short break from the army concluded, im going to start work as soon as I get paid! Although when I retrive the Dreadnought from the Shop it should get a paintjob finished :chrome:

Meanwhile, because pictureless updates are lame, heres some more shots from the last event, specifically my Recon game.

Saw those pic's earlier and wondered when you'd nab them mate :)
How are you planning on doing the bloodletters? still thinking of your 'nasty' ultra's?
Think the tanks are they way forward, and so much easier with the airbrush too :)

On a slightly different note, was meaning to ask you, how many dread shins are there on the ravenwing sprue? and hom many of the sprues do you get in a battleforce?

Hehe, im alert to them all, hopefully soon the big load of shots that were on that monitor will be uploaded got a good few shots of my guys on there!

The Bloodletters will probably me quite conventional, but im tempted to put them on skull bases :D To Explain the Nasty Ultras, my Vangaurd force may well be Disguised Alpha Legionnaires masquerading as Traitor Ultramarines  The decision on that really comes down to time, the Pure Alpha Legion versions of those units are already built and set, If I get time ill knock up the Ultramarine versions.

May Pinch the Airbrush, but my current Spray and Dab-wash technique works quite well, see how it plays out!

You only get one pair of Dread shins on each sprune, and as far as I remember you get 3 or possibly 4 sprunes in each box. Which is a pain! Im half considering looking into Resin casting some, as im looking to add another 5-15 Terminators to this army and 10-20 to the White Scars! Which will obviously be tricky to beg/borrow/steal and they are hard to get on Bitz sites :(

Aha! The Plog lives again!
(Alan Partridge and Mum-Ra? Thats Numberwang!)

Ahem, in any case ive continued half arsed work on the army in preparation for the Horus Heresy Event with a few new purchases and many games! Having finally snaffled use of a camera I can show some of it off, and the theme today is Terminators

First up some shots of the ones finished for the last event (In the hotel on the Friday night, something I thought only happened in urban legend...). I plan to touch them up at some point but they are at least tabletop standard!

Being an Incompetant fool, the shots of a couple are basically blue blurs, so i left them out. This one aint entirely useless though! On the left we have blurry Sheed Ranko, and the right one of the models I had to convert a vehicle combi bolter for the authentic Spiky imperial look.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009254.jpg

Our next bad mofos are at least in focus! A Chainfist and a Reaper carrier, the one on the left shows my hamfisted gorget conversions out of Marine Shoulderpads. The reaper has quite a fiddly conversion on his power fist arm, it was originally from a power armoured model, but it looks good finished so good beans. The Loin cloths/trophies also while half finished are what I imagine Alpha Terminators to bear, they are after all Terror troops!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009250.jpg

More Marines, damn the flesh looks much better in reality... Both of these are based of Black Reach terminators (With a host of Additions) which goes to show what you can do with cheap legs :D
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009252.jpg

Another Reaper, I just love the bulky cannons and had to leave on the Impractical but cool bayonets (Just not the arrows!) The model on the right came out maybe a bit "too chaos" its really a fine line to walk sometimes...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009251.jpg

Finally for this squad (For now, the Other Sergeant has escaped photos at least!) Another couple of Combi Bolter spods. It bears mentioning the basing isnt finished on these (Or the rest of the army!) just up to the event minimum spec. Sooooon ill finish them with lovely bushes are more types of flock. Honest. (Damn Time, and job!)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009253.jpg

More soon, need a drink! (To much Caffeine, Sugar and Alcohol make me type stupid..)

Noserenda

Right! On to new stuff, specifically the Assault Terminators! (Planetstrike Demands them!). This squad is about half done, ive sourced more bits this weekend so they should be up and ready to paint soon.

The only clear shot is ofc a distant one...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009240.jpg

First up is the Sarge. I love this models pose, hes really bracing that shield and screaming defiance! I resisted making the Sergeant a claw wielder because its passe. But Lightning Claws are certainly worth their weight in gold against other Assault Terminators! Its a shame this shot is a bit poo (best of 5...).
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009246.jpg

Speaking of Claws! Even headless and pad less he bagged 4 Fist Shield wielding girls in one round in his virgin game (Booya!) These two also show my problem with Gorgets. Ill admit I completely forgot them... However on the Stormshield users they clearly opted not to use those bulky and annoying extra armour pieces when the have a Stormshield to stick in the way of incoming fire! Lunging Pose on the right here being a case in point.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009242.jpg

Love Left guy here too, hes just got a Bruce-Im'ard-Lee pose going on. Why Storm shield If I love Claws so much though? Because these guys fight the tactic I like to call Cock Blocking. Sounds fun right? Basically these crazy fools jump in the way of Primarchs and smash their faces in. Works surprisingly well! Theyve got a Confirmed Corax Kill, and an Assist on Dorn so far... (Ofc Angaron charging him in the back probably helped there...)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009241.jpg

Last off heres my Pip dreadnought Bayushi. Himself and the Master of the Forge are up to this point before I realised some Hotel cleaner in Nottingham probably found my only midsized brush which still had a point (3k of marines rags your brushes!) so its basecoat only for now.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/14072009248.jpg

So yeah. Also on my desk is a bastion (Currently very boring looking) the Master of the Forge (Who dodged the camera!) and 3 Scout bikes who shall soon be Operative-ised. Which ofc as usual means all the stuff planned in my last set of updates has been sidelined, damn time limits!

I do have a bunch of Combi Meltas though, so Sterngaurd could be on the list. But the tank army has been sunk :cries: The Librarian/Techmarine Slicer is still planned though...

Like the updates mate, I'm supprised you used a lot of the pics, will chase up where my camera lead is so I can give you decent pics in future :)
As for 4 confirmed fist kills, what can I say, I cant make 3+ saves (tho 5+ seems much easier, must be too used to playing guard hehe) and the way things were going I think Dorn would have gone down like a 5 year old with swine flu no matter what.
Anyway, on with the army. It's looking great mate, and to be honest I'd not noticed the lack of gorgets until you mentioned it (and i've been looking at those pics lots in the last few days)
Looking forward to what you do with your bikers, like your last lot of opretives and am sure these will rock too :)

Although it's obvious the Terminators used to be members of the stealth squad, and haven't turned off their surveillance jamming equipment. ;)

I like the look of the dread too, but can't help noticing he seems to be peering up at the sky....is that intentional?

Hehe, Definitely, My camera fu is weak, and barely improving :skull: At some point one of my mates has offered to do a nearly camera shoot style thingee, and hopefully before HH after ive finished basing ill get quality shots of everything... (Update of DOOM!).

On the Dreadnought, there was originally a vague plan to give him dual Twin Autocannons and have him do AA fire, something that may still be on the cards but dreads without powerfists just seem wrong to me!

Saw them used here: pre-heresy death guard guide (http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2007/06/tutorial-death-guard-in-7-easy-steps.html)

Might make all the black lining planned a tad easier on the sanity.

You gotta use macro settings on the cam when taking pictures closer then 50cm (2'). Like the pictures of the terminators. Usually this setting is represented by a flower. If the pictures are blurry, like the techmarine pic, its because the camera was shaking. Try supporting your hands on something. If you check out my IF log, all my pictures are taken with a 3 year old mobile phone camera. Only thing good about that camera is the 3.2 mp which is ok resolution for normal pictures. Good quality pictures is still a battle :P

On the rear shot of the two marines the camera is focusing on the space between the marines. A smart trick to working around this is holding a finger there, then let the camera focus and right before it snaps the picture - remove your hand quickly :)

Another good trick is taking pictures straight in front of the model not semi top-down style. This is because the camera can only focus on a small distance. If the feet of the model is at one distance and the head is at another, only one of them will be in focus. You can see this on the rear shot of the chaplain. Which is well painted btw :)

Hope any of this helps. Just keep trying. Atleast you have good light where you take your pictures. Thats important too!

I think three flails is enough, but you would need to include a couple of extra bodies as well, simply so you can stick with the Mythos, that everytime you cut off a head (a non Flail weilder) a new one grows back (opponent still gets beaten about the head and neck with flails)

thats what I would do anyways..

Your stuff looks amazing man, keep up the good work, I hope you keep adding to the log :D

Aha! Cheers for the tips and advice guys, ive been stricken with insomnia so ive finally gotten around to getting more pictures online after feeling Alpha-y...

First up some stuff ive been working on tonight!

Land Speeder Storm for the Operatives, mostly together, just thinking about what to do with the crew
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/P5040176.jpg

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/P5040177.jpg

And something I knocked up while watching Misfits (Which is great btw). An Operative Marbo Analogue i might pitch to Ulfedin for future TF packs. Hes a Storm Crewman with an IG vet head and some extras foraged from around the place.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/P5040174.jpg

Id guess an Operative would be more sneaky sod than Rambo Badass, so hes triggering a remote mine rather than flinging a Satchel charge and hes got a bolter with something special up the pipe rather than a bizzare needle pistol... Plus Lunch! (Hes got to be doing something while in reserve right?)

Thanks as ever chief :D I think its roughly 4-6k, although 2 400-ish-pt Primarchs tend to inflate that!

The Dreadnoughts wings are diced up Ravenwing Icons, ive got millions of the things lying around!

As for Thunder Rhinos, they are basically the unholy lovechild of a Trukk and a Rhino, very nasty vehicles with a Combat Squads worth of firepower on the hull to boot!

No Dreadnoughts were harmed in the production of my Terminators! They are the Dark Angel Dreadnought shins from the Ravenwing sprune, thus the slightly bumpy Left shoulders :cries:

And they are indeed washed, all my metal since long ago is basically BOltgun Metal-Thinned Black (Although Babdad suits too) then a pinch of Boltgun and maybe Chainmail on holidays  Its just the lighting has removed it in this barrage of pictures (As well as manking up faces...).

Whoops, sorry to be slow, meant to reply then forgot! I think it was that one, might be able to get one but I think I gave all my DA spare icons to a local DA player at some point :(

What are the gorgets on the Terminators made from? I want to do big gorgets on my terminators but my sculpts with GS haven't come out well.

I used Marine shoulder pads, if you trim off the top curve they fit fairly well, its fiddly and needs a bit of filling, but easier than sculpting! Ive also seen good results using plasticard in a similar way.

No worries mate; I took the plunge and guessing that it was, raided a bits site, and shamelessly stole your idea! (For my BA!)

Just a few quick notes...

1. Pre-heresy the Alpha Legion still used the hydra symbol.

2. Pre-heresy Alpha Legion colours were gold trim over purple armour. They adopted the silver trim on blue afterwards.

3. Alpharius and Omegon weren't actually that much bigger than their marines. All Alpha Legionnaires did their damnedest to appear exactly as Alpharius did, so that they could all claim to be him when asked who they were.

4. Omegon lead the the Alpha Legion's 'stealth squad'. Having him as a gigantic behemoth with Lightning Claws doesn't really work.

Which could still work well with the fact that Alpha Legion marines are also noted as being quite tall, much like their Primarch.

At least, per their Index Astartes article...

Hey there Isstvan,

Nice to see another Alpha Legion aficionado around :)

I wonder what your sources might be for your first two points? They're not quite in line with my understanding - what have I missed out on?

DuskRaider
18-11-2010, 05:16
Actually, Isstvan's first two points are actually wrong. Nose got it right with the Legion symbol. Technically their armor was more of a purple with silver trim, but the purple / blue could be up for discussion as well. But they never had gold trim. I think it all looks swell, Noserenda.

OK!

From the Index Astartes article on the Alpha Legion:

"Two days later, the rest of the Luna Wolves fleet arrived, summoned by the cruiser's distress signal. The legion's Primarch, Horus, was shuttled straight to the stricken cruiser, furious at the crew's failure to deal with such insignificant attackers. He found the command deck in a state of high alert, for a small group of the enemy had somehow managed to board the cruiser. They had split up to evade capture in the ship's endless corridors and service decks, and those that had not already been found and eliminated now seemed to be converging on the bridge.

Horus waited for them. As five men burst onto the deck, he shot four of them through the head before they even had a chance to act. Without pause the fifth shot rang out, but the last man was different. More than foot taller even than the Luna Wolves Space Marines, he had piercing green eyes and looked almost a match for Horus himself. Somehow, even at such close range, the man sidestepped fast enough that the bolt shell only grazed his temple and exploded against the bulkhead behind."

and

"With astounding prescience, the Emperor had ordered their founding just a few decades before. The new Space Marines were tall and strong, much reminiscent of their Primarch, and were possessed of a cunning intelligence."

The key here is, of course, the fact that he 'looked almost a match for Horus himself." Horus being rather tall himself...

So, the Alpha Legion Marines are able to pass for Alpharius mostly because they are all on the 'tall' side.

Well, that and all the surgery/enhancements too...

Just read and look at the Index Astartes article for Alpha Legion. It has a picture of a Pre-Heresy Alpha-Legionnaire, whose armor is purple (blue?) with silver trim. Not only that, but their Pre-Heresy symbol is shown on the art render as the Alpha A, with a chain as the line passing through. They began to use the Hydra symbol during the Heresy and kept it afterward. If you're still not convinced of the Pre-Heresy colors, you can also take a look at the cover of "Legion", although even I'll admit the colors aren't the best to decipher.

OK!

From the Index Astartes article on the Alpha Legion:

*snip*

Just to add a little spice to this debate, here's an extract from the IA article from just before Alpharius' quote:

"... Inquisitor Kravin of the Ordo Malleus has recently unearthed an ancient journal that he claims provides an account of the first contact with, and recovery of, the legions' Primarch. Kravin has estimated the veracity of this journal at 62.6%, but has so far refused to produce it for independent examination.

According to Kravin's claim, towards the end of the Great Crusade, an advance patrol cruiser of the Luna Wolves Legion entered an unnamed system, searching as ever for lost human worlds."

and then on a seperate note:

"The following account appears to be the personal log of a member of the Ultramarines strike force, probably a sergeant. It is included in Inquisitor Kravin's diatribe 'Lessons of Strife', though other Inquisitors and representatives of the Ultramarines themselves have questioned its validity. The original document was purportedly discovered in a system earth-ward of Eskrador"

So, although the IA article is one of the best sources of info on the Alpha Legion, the information it contains should not always be taken as correct.

The color of thier armor I think is supposed to be a violet so deep it appears blue
That way one is never quite sure
is it blue?
is it purple?
The symbol was the A with the chain but they were using the hydra as thier undercover symbol for things such as Identifying thier undercover agents, designating safehouses ect
Using both,either/or, would be fine IMO

Alpharius

I think the info 'up for debate' would be the post-Heresy actions, especially the events vs. the Ultramarines and the 'ultimate fate' of their Primarch...

That is where the most 'disinformation' lies, as the Legion is most interested in covering their tracks and remaining as off the radar as possible...

But the IA article also talks of the mysterious lack of info about their origins; that account is also presented as from Kravin, and he himself is not completely sure of it's veracity.

The bit at the end about Kravin being discredited at the Ikrilla Conclave shows that something was a little off with the whole situation.

Ultimately all the info in the IA article could well be true, and Girreaux may have been the one under the influence of the AL, trying to discredit the source. But unlike other IA articles, nothing should be relied upon as canon. It's fine to say that you've decided that you like a particular point/story best, and model your force accordingly. But any one is on shaky ground if they try to claim that someone elses's interpretation is wrong, since there is very little that is 100% certain about this unorthodox and seceretive Legion. (Which is what I was hoping to lead on to in a discussion with Isstvan, but he's not poppped back again :shifty:)

Alpharius
19-11-2010, 14:22
Good points, but really, why 'make up' the 'fact' that Alpharius and his Legion were 'tall'?

This would pretty much we an established fact, as many would have seen him and them "out and about", as it were.

Either way though, whatever!

Keep up the good work Noserendas! We'll try not to muddy up your thread...

Hehe awesome, I pop in to think about updates and the Thread has floated to the top with Debates!

First thing to bear in mind with this army is that is was Started when all I was to go on was IA, and in the WD version (The Colours change :shifty: ) their armour is Blue... Its worth noting though that while its hard to see in photos (or irl...) my Armour is actually worked up from Indigo :D

Hydras? There are a few around, but I reasoned Pre Heresy that stuff was subtle!

Reading Legion carefully, Omegon does a whole bunch of things. Dont expect a Primarch to get saddled with Sergeant status :D

And most importantly, as Warpwhisperer says, the chief thing with the Alpha Legion is Deception, Lies and outright Propaganda. You never see things from thier view, or even word of god, its all perspective!

Anyhow Ill have a craptonne more photos up later, just popping over my GFs but heres a Taster...

Looking good :)

The tank names - they're written with a pen, right? If so, what did you use - I tried fine-liners in the past, but found they would just rub off again - I had to spray varnish whatever I wrote on straight away afterwards! (If not, they're amazingly fine for brushwork!)

Your operatives are looking good - I like the camo schemes on the bikes and speeder too. Ties in with the rest of the force, and much more sensible than those Codex Astartes following fools! ;)

Your tank commander - does he count as Chronos? Or just a personality figure to go with the armoured force?

And of course, always good to see old-school conversion beamers! What did you use for the 'back' half of the wire on that (the bit where it cuts down from two to one wires)

Yes its a fineliner, I use both a Staedtler pigment liner 0.05 and a Uni Pin Fineline 0.1 for various jobs including a whole White Scars army! They smudge at first but after a little while go as dry as any other paint.

It might just be the ink you used, I chatted with a mate of mine who worked in the Art shop I bought them in before picking them up about various pens etc, i guess some might not have proper permanent ink?

Definitely! It was a slightly odd scheme on the infantry but Im glad it works a lot better on the Vehicles :D

Your tank commander - does he count as Chronos? Or just a personality figure to go with the armoured force?

He can do, for the Tempus Fugitives campaign he is basically a Hero Level Chronus, I thought I had a shot of him riding on a tank, but obviously not! Oh worth noting though, ive half finished basing most of the army now :D

And of course, always good to see old-school conversion beamers! What did you use for the 'back' half of the wire on that (the bit where it cuts down from two to one wires)

Ah yeah do love them, took blood to get one to cut up though! Heres a better side shot of the gun itself...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/MOFSideFinished.jpg

The part with two wires is the back end of a Lascannon, which merges with an Old Ork Dread cable before heading back into the Lascannon backpack. Damn the paintjob looks rough in that shot :cries:

Fair point about the pens - I'd been using mostly Staedtler pens, but that was a throwback from my school days, when I used to hang around with some cartoonists who used them to ink their drawings; maybe not the best to use on models after all. Maybe I'll revisit them again, and try and get some better pens.

Thanks dude! Yeah they are a lot to manage at the moment, hopefully ill get an Apoc game up at some point to roll them all out in... :D

There is more work to do on the Tanks, im hoping to get wearthering done on all of them once they are "Factory" painted which should hopefully smooth out some of the blemishes the washes left.

As for Insignia, im actually thinking of White lining them all to tidy them up and make them stand out a bit, with this shade of Indigo/Blue some people half look and assume Ultramarines! (Good IC, bad Irl!).

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/Wdavid1.jpg

They are deployed in a jungle environment alongside rampant Antiplant barrages (Surprise Cockfags!) so I imagined they would get pretty roughed up pretty quickly though not rusted or suffering old damage.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/wdavid2.jpg

I started by dabbing a sponge in Charadon Granite around areas of wear, then picking out some chips and streaks with Boltgun metal and the odd black line to emphasise. Then I cracked out a Tamiya Weathering stick "mud" on the tracks and some splash, before highlighting that with "Light Earth".

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/wdavid3.jpg

I also lightly dusted the top, i imagine a lot of dust and mud being thrown up in any armour engagement! (It this case some "Light Earth" rubbed around with my finger).

This is my first play with sponges and Weathering sticks really, so im REALLY keen to see peoples opinions! (If anything it cant be as cartoony as my White Scars :D ).

At least they have a spark of originality to each of them, knocking out 20 Tactical Marines because its "fluffy" is probably only going to leave me bitter (Smiley here)

Cool to see all those preds together; colour me jealous!

That sgt's pose is very cool, and I approve of the plasma pistol usage; definaintely the way to go! Where'd you get the beret'd heads from?

And that's one crazy biker, driving along a tree trunk for the hell of it! One reason might be that it could be spanning a deep gorge? Although the cinematic jump is probably a better answer to that... Maybe he's sitting on the log like a raft to move down a fast flowing river? Or maybe he's surrounded by quicksand/swamp, and that's the only safe place to stop for his lunch? Or he's trying not to leave bike tracks in the soft mud, so drives his bike from log to log?

...he's just showing off, isn't he? ;)

Edit: I've just realised the true answer; he's fighting some xenos that are very much like dryads, and he's knocked one down and is grinding it's face in the mud. Problem sorted :D

Ty again!

Look forward to the company shot when i finish weathering em :D

The Beret heads are from maximini over in Poland im quite a fan of theirs despite barely using their kit! http://www.maxmini.eu/store/ They do a few heads and bits which are cool.

The Berets also have a deeper relevance to the army, they look suspiciously similar to the ones worn by the Lankan Alliegence (My Pre compliance humans) Elite Scouts...

The Finished Company Command Tank "Assassin"

Ive worked the Taimya Weathering Pens "Mud" and "Light Earth" over the tracks and lightly over the hulls where dust thrown up from the advance would go. Then given it all a dust over with Forge World "Fresh Mud" and "Dry Mud" especially any recesses where dust should go and weathering pens wont!

I'm honestly not a fan of the weathering, the amount and colour looks good, but I feel like you are applying it in the wrong places. Look up some pics of tanks that have been in action, dirt accumulates in the about the same areas where water would run if you poured it onto the vehicle, i.e nooks and crannies and of course the areas around the tracks. Right now you have kind of done the opposite. If you want fresh dirt, apply it to corners and edges, still not middle of flat areas.

Scratches should go on edges, while rust could go a bit everywhere but especially areas that see much water (again, nooks and crannies), heavy wear (around doors and moving parts) and actually middle of big flat areas.

Check out the Threadhead thread in General 40k P&M section for reference pics, there are some amazing weathering skills there!

Very true, I spend a lot of time reading threads like that, especially on the Ammobunker (/plug). I was going for a specific affect on these though based on some fluff ive been compiling.

In this specific environment the Company has been charging through a largely Anti-Planted path through a jungle, sooo lots of fresh dust and mess, horrible mud and glancing hits from the off surviving tree or rock more than weapons fire.

Ofc there should still be more mud in the recesses, I think I need to fiddle with that a bit more ive picked up some thinner to use but i was reluctant to use that straight off, ill have a play after ive sorted my biker gang :D

Coming up 10 Bikers! (gf is asleep so dont want to play with cameras!) Plus another 10 soon!

Back on the Alpha Legion front heres the Bikers ive been working on, Need new superglue though as mine has gone to a sludgey end :( In total ill have 2 Full squads, probably all with Melta toys as they seem more useful on a pricey bike squad than flamers and Heavy bolters. Most of them from a mates failed White Scars army but ive got a couple more on order to top them off.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/bikeswip3.jpg
First group (Missing some bases that fell off!) Gnarly Melta toting Vet, I love that head even if it aint the most appropriate. Standard bolter monkey and another more subtle Space wolf head thief.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/bikeswip2.jpg
Chainsword waver, a dozen men clutching handlebars in a sensible manner would be epic boredom! Sergeant with Power Fist for smooshing riding a log to look prominent! And waving the Melta gun for effect on the end.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/bikeswip1.jpg
More chainsword waving :D The endmost a conversion of one of the thousand ravenwing powerswords I have to chain variety the rest pretty straight up builds with Scorpion kits.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/Attackbikeswip.jpg
And the Attack bikes, up on Dread bases for continuity with some slate and greened biker tread on one, it was a pain and the damn bike covers it! The Second bike will get a gun when I decide what to put there, probably a melta but maybe a Heavy bolter. They are less useful on Attack bikes but for some reason Codex Marine armies are often exactly 40pts short I find, which is exactly one Heavy bolter Attack bike...

Mind you I do have a third to rebuild...

Righto big news first! I got a tripod! No longer will my crack riddled hands ruin my photos, now its just pure incompetance :D

Seeing as the next TF event is Terminator Heavy and the TF rules now allow for more flexible Terminator (Cataphract) squads plus the aborted Iron Warrior project left me with a bunch lying around... Ive gone back to work on the Cataphract platoon plan!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/cataswip2.jpg

They still need their Shoulder pads, on bits order, but the frame is there. And by god did having a dremel this time speed up the De-Chaos-ing.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/cataswip1.jpg

They have a bunch of Power Weapons, Combi meltas and Chainfists to compliment and mix with my existing squads. I went with Grey knights heads on these rather than Chaos Warrior ones + gorgets because im a bit lazy :D I think it shows different models of Terminator armour in development well though.

As TF Cataphracts can also take Multi Meltas, I just had to convert a couple, I came up with two designs:

One Based on an Assault Cannon
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/catamelta1.jpg

One on a Heavy Flamer
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/catamelta2.jpg

Opinions anyone? Im unlikely to do anymore but feedback is always helpful!

I also ran a test game with Dave the other day with planetstrike, got a few workable photos!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Battles/br1.jpg

My Army on the day

Librarian = Erythron 100pts

4 Cataphracts 187pts
2 Chain Fists, Fist, Ranko

3 Cataphracts 160pts
Hammer, Shield, Reaper, Chainfist, Fist

3 Cataphracts 155pts
Hammer, Shield, Claws, Fist

3 Cataphracts 165pts
Hammer, Shield, Reaper, 2 Fists

3 Cataphracts 145pts
Hammer, Shield, Fist

5 Operatives 175pts
2 Meltas, Power weapon
In a storm w/Multimelta

3x Predator AAV 405pts
Lascannons, HKs

All of the above is obviously TF Codex based, but Basically Terminators back by IG vets and Blood Angel Preds.

The enemy Army was 2 Fat 20 Man Tactical Squads backed by Sigismund and a Small Cataphract bodyguard. Dave will add details im sure!

Noserenda pretty much summed my force up in a nutshell, it was great fun playing with fat 20 man heresy era tactical squads, definately going to have to bulk them out now :) and then my own small reactionary force of Sigismund and Cataphracts.

Was a blast playingm such a simple bored set up and terrain will probably lead to lots more games now and pics to go with them :)

As a run down of the game, I took 3 bastions and declared them as 3 ojectives, so Scott took the Dawn assault and Forward observer stratgems, and I had Lazer Maze, Minefield and Escape hatch. The forward observer worked really well with so many DS'ing Cataphracts (tho didnt stop one squad mishapping back into reserve twice!), but the night fight was largly ineffectual, My mine field luckily claimed 2 Cataphracts, and would have ment more of a choice if i'd deplyed it better, the lazer maze was always a thought, but I think killed more tactical marines then anything else, and Escape hatch was useful and got me 2 of the predators (eventually, though credit goes to Scott for making me think of using it to sneak out behind them ;))

All in all it was a really good and close game, even though we were playing a scenario where the defender had 500pts less :)

Yeah you put up a fight Dave, unlike those Poor Iron Warriors who despite even Points killed a mighty 3 Cataphracts, and those on the last turn

Mini Update tonight, I pinched some Superglue off my Housemate to get a few bits of resin in place...

A maximini head for a cataphract, i love this head its so full of menace! Plus the Deathmaster in Finecast. I fancied trying one out but I dont plan any non plastics in my Alphas in the short term* so I went for a model I love for an army I might dig out instead :D

In short im a fan of the change to resin, very nice to work with.

Operatives, Now with 100% more heads! Although im short some as the Microarts Beret heads turned out to be hideously off scale and ***** :cries: Their Rasta heads turned out good though!

So First up Shotguns!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/mopwips1.jpg
Conventional Poses most of these, Except the cloaked one who is pulling a pistol to pop some caps.

Then Bolters!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/mopwips2.jpg
Again simple poses, the problem with Ebay Salvage is it leaves you missing a lot of options! Like how they came together though. The Wolfscout heads have done well as Techno-Barbarians I think.

And the Big guns...

Ive wanted to use the Scout Heavy bolters for a while because they are awesome :D Just a shame I cannibalised so many of their Left arms for other Operatives or id have more! These guys are finished pretty much, its worth mentioning the prior sets need more stowage and backpacks!

Definitely, ive been ranging far and wide for more heads! I want the Operatives to seem extremely diverse as individuals but obviously equipped from the same source (The Legion) Heads really help with this imho!

So back to Alpha Legion as promised! Ive got most of my Current pile assembled, need to crack on with the ARV and Cataphract leather bits still, but heres more work on operatives and bikes!

Flamer Bikers
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/1309387340.jpg
My special weapons slot in my bits box was entirely filled with Flamers and nowt else so i thought id get some used, with big fat squads in opposition the bikes should make good use of the Promethium death spewers!

Other Bikers
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/1309387336.jpg
A Sergeant, another meltagun and a couple of Bikers waving pistols (For Drivebys). Good times! This puts me to 2 Full squads of Bikers and a Captain to lead them as per original plan although they have extra Special weapons as per the TF rules.

Cell Coordinators
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/1309387334.jpg
20man Operative Cells get a free Coordinator which is nice.. Im thinking of running them solo as their Toughness and WS arent so useful with their Lessers around! But Power Weapons and melta bombs is a flexible loadout.

Aaaaand Operatives!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/1309387342.jpg
Left to Right: A grenade Launcher Converted from a Scout biker one, also toting a Woodelf blade; Beret Head and Shottie, most have maximini packs too btw, Microarts rasta head and finally a Marauder horseman head cos I like the beard!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/1309387344.jpg
All fairly self explanitory here tbh, the Flamer on the end is again part of my flamer overflow, he is signalling due to my arm shortage!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/1309387346.jpg
Another Nade Launcher but again straightforward stowage additions.

So ya, Im thinking of Undercoating the Operatives tomorrow, and cracking on with basing the Bikes sturdily, damn resin bases refuse to glue well so im thinking a spot of GS too. ofc I might just build a tank...

So with my corner cutting revealed how does he hold up?

Sweet. Keep them comming

Not a Problem :D

In between bikes ive taken a short break to build a few more random models from bits. Behold!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/NewRankoscaled.jpg
I fancied a slightly more noticeable Sheed Ranko who could also do double duty as a Terminator Captain. Now Sensibly i should have given him a Logan Rimmnar/Belial Armament, but *bleep* that noise

The Techmarine is my long suffering "Ill paint you one day" project, he is frequently robbed of parts and dignity, poor chap!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/3rdcoorddevvie.jpg
On the Left we have a new Devastator, my current squad runs at 7 men for various reasons and the new TF agenda has a 10man minimum so im scrounging bits to get a few more boots on the ground. Fairly standard pose with one pair of legs and Some Maxmini bionics providing legs for both he and the Second figure, a third Cell Coordinator. Hes clearly been in the wars missing arm and leg down one side! Pose wise he has just examined the Auspex and is now waving his men on.

More Bikes after the weekend though, im off to stab Greeks

And Another 3 bikers!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/bikes3.jpg

(Hides in shame of own lack of painting progress)

Hehe Cheers, dont sweat progress either, sometimes i go on mad painting missions, sometimes I dont touch anything for a month! Ofc the couple of months in the run up to a campaign weekend narrow focus admirably...

On that note, some stuff i made because i wanted to (With a pile of Campaign to build boxes a foot away :D )

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/shieldvetswip.jpg
A Couple of Veterans with Storm Shields, my Vanguard squad dies... A lot! So a couple of these babies should hopefully pad that! I went for the Big Stormshields because they look better on power Armoured infantry, big Riot shields!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/arvfrontwip.jpg

And a Pet project of mine, the Predator ARV... (Armoured Recovery Vehicle)

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/arvsidewip.jpg

Obviously I have a lot of tanks, so it made sense for one of these babies to be hanging around nearby, ive repeatedly picked brains for this project and was originally going to make it Razorback based. Instead I went for a Predator build as that seems what RL tank mods went for!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/arvrearwip.jpg

Obviously tow cables and A Frames arent cool enough for Space Marines, why not try some honking great Servo Arms?

The Basic build is done now, I was thinking about more stowage but my white scars stole it all! What do people think?

Ooooooo! That ARV is slick. Very clever use of the sentinel legs. Where is the turret housing from? I really like what you did with it, especially the coaxial multi-melta. You really nailed the look of a combat engineering vehicle.

Back to business! I had my internet cut off for over a week which sucked, reading stuff on my phone was tolerable but replying on it was a nightmare! Still now I get all the Games day Goodies at once I guess...

Still! Things did not sit still on my bench, although HOMM4 stole more of my super productive painting week than I anticipated :D

First up I finished the last of the Bike Platoon
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/bikes7.jpg
Left to Right: Sergeant 2 Punching his Powerfist forward to advance! His base is a particular favourite. Another Meltagunner complete with hairy head (Whose hair is ace!) its worth reiterating im not a believer in every Alpha Legionary being a clone! Finally a Designated Squad Leader firing superfluous bolt pistol :D

Noserenda
26-09-2011, 23:50
Ofc with them done it was on to...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/catas1.jpg
Terminators! Finally a squad not painted in a Hotel Room ;) I did all the Storm Shields in this batch +1 random guy. The Topknots ive used to pick out Sergeants even though mechanically they dont differ. Im thinking of adding some plants to the Terminator's bases, possibly something to do If i have time later...

Ive also been on a building spree, working though my last Dark Sphere order, one clearly ordered whilst suffering Operative fever!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/wipstorms.jpg
2 Storms with Heavy Bolters, they let me sneak nasty squads up close whilst people are distracted by the Melta Storms :D Working left to right we have heads donated from Marauder Horsemen, Outriders, Catachans and Cadians. I missed a trick on converting the drivers, too focused on the Gunners! Not entirely happy with the second gunners Arm, suspect he needs more wrist.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/wipstormandbikes.jpg
More Operative bikers! Ulf has upped the minimum size of Scout bikes to 5, so more men were needed to keep the Operative bikers on the loose, One fairly conventional model with a Marauder head and the Sergeant with a Delightfully ridiculous moustache, (Brettonian Peasant) distracting from his Power Fist... The Storm Features another Cadian and Marauder Horseman, the gunner is quite an extensive rebuild and is bracing his foot against the stanchion which was very tricky to get right!

Its also worth mentioning im kinda running short on heads, thus the increase in Cadians! (Although I do alter their lids).

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/wipopsnipers.jpg
Some Operative Snipers, (Cadian, Flagellant, Cadian) for sitting next to Interceptor guns in planetstrike. Ive previously used random shotgunners but a Sniper Rifle is marginally more useful if the gun gets knocked out! Ofc one of this squad is blindfold and one has an eye patch ;)

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/wipopmissilelaunchers.jpg
Next up some Missile Launchers, a new option in their upgraded entry which makes a lot of sense! These are all built out of Storm crew, in this case with minimal reposing (I love that kit!). Left to Right: Advancing mid Reload, Firing at a high target, Firing at a Flat Target and sporting a Maximini Bionic after i mangled his original Leg appropriately enough :D

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/wipmiscops.jpg
Now the Miscellaneous! I wanted a couple of Operatives with Power Weapons, the first of which is here and obviously some crazy blind martial artist! Then a Couple more Hellgunners and the obvious Storm Crewman reloading Bolter was too cool to passup (Even though I already have enough bolters!). All in all fairly conventional stuff for me.

Ive got another half a dozen Storm Crew to convert, but im in need of both heads and bases! I cant believe ive run out of 25mm round so im going to have a scrounge around some boxes in a bit...

From left to Right: Another Sergeant, this one keen on Tank Murder :D My New Sheed Ranko, the old one was very hard to spot sometimes! He Also doubles as a Terminator Captain potentially, thus the bigger topknot! Finally another tank hunter, with power weapon to discourage those pesky infantry!

I now have everything undercoated for the event, Keen at a high

Im hoping to pick some up later in the week though, annoyingly I get an extended lunch break on Tuesday which is perfect for the 40 odd minutes it takes to get toys from my local GW in a lunchbreak, so it may have to wait for next week :cries:

First up!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/Techmarine1.jpg
My Techmarine who has been sat on the shelf pretty much since the beginning! He deserved to be painted finally and im really happy with how he came out, one of my best faces I think :) The Servo Arm conversion was basically for ***** n giggles.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/Coordinator3.jpg
My third Cell Coordinator, pointing sword and clearly pensioned off mainline duty due to having half his limbs blown off! The pose is a little awkward I think but it does kinda work.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/Noserenda/Models/Alpha%20Legion/FinShieldvets.jpg

You cant go wrong with Terminators (And they proved it over the weekend in fact!) Thanks a lot guys! Keeping Unformity is a battle with every piece (I love individuals) to varying degrees the faceless mass is a very Alpha Legion thing! Fortunately im blessed with a good degree of obsession :D

Well wow, the Golconda Expanse was the best TF event yet!

Ill get around to a full writeup of sorts later but needless to say ill be going again (I won a free ticket in the pub quiz so I can make definitive statements like that :D ) and lead the Glorious Taskforce Harbinger to victory for the Warmaster!
