Please read this post before replying!

Greetings, fellow painters, and welcome to the third Tale of 40K Painters monthly update extravaganza!

For those of you who donít know what the Tale of Painters is, look here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/general-project-logs/91272-the-tale-of-40k-painters-working-thread.html). For those of you who are participating, this is the official thread in which you should post the work you have done in the last month. Over the next seven days, participants in the Tale should post here ONCE, and ONCE ONLY, for each army you are painting! If you are not participating in the Tale of 40K Painters, please do not post here before the 7th of October. This is so that we can keep the posts containing everyone's work from last month together as an "intro" to the project. If you wish to comment on anyone's work before then, please use the current working thread (http://warseer.com/forums/general-project-logs/100670-tale-of-40k-painters-monthly-update-2-and-september-working-thread.html) or look at their project log. :)

In your post, you should include a description of each unit you have painted, including the number and type of models, and any upgrades or equipment they carry, followed by the total points cost of the unit. Please, DO NOT post the points costs of individual upgrades or models, as GW donít like it and so neither, by extension, do the moderators. If you have painted more than one unit, give the total points cost of your monthly painting endeavours.

Next, please post photos of each unit you have painted, and of the army as a whole. Photos should be cropped or resized to less than 1024 by 1024 pixels to avoid scrollbars and ensure the thread doesnít take too long to load.

The rest of your post is up to you. You can say anything you like here, about what you enjoyed or found hard, what you were especially pleased with, etc., etc., and any additional photos you wish to show. However, please post no more than 4 images per month (i.e, please donít use multiple posts to add extra images). If you want to add more than 4 photos, then either include them as links to your photo album, or as attachments. You could, of course, take a photo including more than one unit as long as the image isnít too big. Also, include a link to your painting log here if you have one, so that anyone viewing the thread can give you some feedback if they want to.

Feel free to use this post (http://warseer.com/forums/1790884-post2.html) as a template for your update.

If you have to play a joker, please post saying so, and include a suitably amusing image. If you do not post within the next seven days, then you will automatically count as having jokered August.

Thanks for reading all that. I look forward to seeing your work!

Note: As with last month, please continue to use the current working thread until the submission deadline (7th of October), when this thread will transmogrify into the new working thread.

Sam (McMullet)

PS. This was a copy/paste from last month, so if any of the dates look off then please shout at and abuse me until I edit it.

El-Diablo

El Diablo's painting. Month 3 - September

ARMY - Black Legion or, Which Black Crusade are we on now?

UNITS COMPLETE THIS MONTH

8 Chaos Havocs, 4 heavy bolters.

TOTAL - 180 points.

CURRENT ARMY POINTS - 615

BACKGROUND/THEME: As for background, I haven't really thought about it yet. Theme-wise im going for a very stereotypical Black Crusade, so at some point Abaddon and a nice big terminator retinue will pop up.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
The 4 bolter marines are basic out of the box marines with a few extra bits from various marine.chaos marine boxes. The 4 heavy bolters were underslung as I think the normal pose on the plastic HB is bloody awful. Cowlings were made with GS, with big mags from ork shootas. Im planning a second havoc squad with 4 autocannons done in the same way.

PAINTING:
Pretty simple, black undercoat, with the metals painted in a standard basecoat, ink, highlights kinda way. The black was highlighted with a mix of black and bleached bone. Everthing else is painted in a pretty standard way.

BASING:
Nice and easy, sand washed with brown ink, drybrushed with bubonic brown and bleached bone, static grass and a scorched brown rim.

STILL TO DO:
I'd like to add a champion and icon to this unit, but time was against me for this one.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
High point was the look of the heavy bolters. They were converted about 3 months ago but only painted in the last couple of weeks.

Lows would be completely scrapping Abaddon. :cries: Everything started ok, but as I was painting it I went a bit mad. The sculpting on some areas was a bit sub par for what I can do and seeing as its Abaddon I really didn't want to mess it up.

Up for october will be a tasty little forge world dread, with my first adventures into magnets. If I get the chance i'll do the icon bearers for the first 2 squads, plus the icon and champion of the havocs.

Once again, apologies for pictures, black never likes being photographed.

MARSEKAY. Month 3 - September

ARMY -Imperial fists.

UNITS COMPLETE THIS MONTH

2 whirlwinds + lascannon razorback turret

TOTAL - 170+20 extra for changed razorback turret

CURRENT ARMY POINTS - 605

BACKGROUND/THEME: the backround is yellow imperial fists. these are space marines.. um next question?

BUILD/CONVERSION:
no converting on the whirlwinds but i did give them forgeworld doors and front plates!

PAINTING:
Usual yellow method. primed white painted 2 coats of "imperial fist mix" and washed. highlighted to taste

BASING:
there are no bases!

STILL TO DO:
tempted to add weathering and highlight a little more

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs was having lots of heavy support, lows were the fact i have had 3 whirlwinds to paint and they got VERY tiresome

COMING UP...
Up for october will be my HQ and another whirlwind....

Spikedog's Desert Themed IG Armoured Company: September 2007

Unit 1: Chimera [Extra Armour, Smoke Launchers, Track Guards, Pintle Mounted Heavy Stubber, Turret Multilaser]: 110 points.

TOTAL PAINTING FOR JULY: 110 POINTS (Only 1 unit this month as I was over by almost 100 points last month)

TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 390 POINTS

BACKGROUND/THEME:

This army is an all female IG Armoured Company that are defending their desert homeworld from invasion from hostile forces. They make up for their lack of numbers by mass ARMOUR!

BUILD/CONVERSION:

The Chimera is stock but was a rescued model that was kindly donated to me by a friend. The extra bits on the side are covering up where there were marks left by the removal of random stuff.

PAINTING:

White undercoat with an airbrushed on camo pattern of Desert Yellow and Graveyard Earth. This was washed with a mix of Graveyard Earth and Vallejo Transparent Smoke. Then drybrushed with Desert Yellow and White. Finally it was detailed and chipped with various colours.

The weathering was done with Mig Pigments, Gulf War Sand and Dry Mud. I still plan to add some more weathering and improve on what I have done so far. These have been a learning process for me as I haven't painted any vehicles in over 10 years and have never used an airbrush at all.

BASING:

N/A

STILL TO DO:

A couple of details need finishing but it is at least ready to play.

HIGHS:

Erm... getting it to look like the other one?

AND LOWS:

Finding out that the turret has a different hatch design to the current other one I did...

PICTURES:

OTHER COMMENTS:

As I said above, this project is a learning experience for me so I expect things to get easier, faster and to look better the further in I go.

NEXT MONTH:

I have a stock GW Demolisher for next month.

Feel free to check out my project log for more pictures and information.

Wave after Wave of Jim Reaper's Men: September 2007

Unit 1: Infantry squad, grenade launcher, autocannon. 83 points.

Unit 2: 2 Stormtroopers. 20 points.

Unit 3: Sentinel, armoured crew compartment, lascannon. 65 points.

Unit 4: Lascannon team (from heavy weapons platoon). 36.67 points.

TOTAL PAINTING FOR SEPTEMBER: 204.67 POINTS

TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 405.33 POINTS

BACKGROUND/THEME:
Lots and lots of men. The armoured Sentinel in this month is the (joint) heaviest thing in the army.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Well the Sentinel is standing on a rock. This is more or less the level of conversion you can expect in this army - I have 187 models to paint and need all of my time for that.

PAINTING:
The men are painted the same way as last month, the Sentinel is painted Scab Red, washed with watered down Chaos Black and then re-highlighted via drybrushing up to Blood Red. Camouflage was stippled on using Graveyard Earth, Kommando Khaki and Bleached Bone. After this I painted on loads of lettering saying "NO STEP" and "STAND CLEAR" and such things, mostly due to Airfix-related nostalgia.

BASING:
Based the whole army so far this month, in a thoroughly typical and uninteresting earth-and-grass style. The earth is sand inked black, then drybrushed in Bestial Brown, Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone.

STILL TO DO:

Er, varnishing perhaps.

HIGHS AND LOWS:

I'm rather pleased with how the Sentinel turned out. I think the colour scheme lends itself well to armoured things - which is just as well as I plan to reward myself with a Marauder Destroyer once this army is finished. On the negative side I already hate heavy weapons teams, and I have another 13 to paint...

Ok, First up this month, my space marines, probably going to stick with the name Mortis Guard, fluff is still pretty much the same idea as last month except I'm also tossing around the idea that they are marines that are listed as slain in battle from different chapters, how they are showing up in groups is unknown, dunno if I am going to flesh that out a bit more or not.

This month, I painted a full devastator squad using the Dark Angels rules.

10 men, 2 lascannon, 2 missile launcher
sarge has bp/chainsword
Pointswise 275 points.

First month I was flopping around like a fish and thinking chaos, so that was a joker, last month's assault was 155 points as wysiwyg.

so total so far is: 430 points (the Rhino I am slowly working on as 'extra credit' somewhere when I need a few points to make up a month, and its not finished yet)

I'm afraid that against my own choice I shall have to be withdrawing altogether from this. I shall be painting in my own time but due to not really being able to get a proper photo of things and also due to the gods damned Apocalypse delivery for the store today with 19 ******* boxes all my chances of catching up are shot to hell.

Good luck to ya folks!

Sorry fellas..............I'm going to have to bail out of this, even though I really don't want to

however, a combination of life and my age old problem of finding motivation to sit down and paint for an extended amount of time have hindered me big time

I'll be posting pics of my mini's as & when I get them painted around the MP&T forums

Good luck guys, keep the superb work up and sorry for not contributing my own fair share

James' (greyclaw) Renegade Guard using The Siege of Varks army list.
Unit 1 Militia Squad. Las Guns, Heavy Bolter Grenade Launcher, Vox caster. 83 points.
Unit 2 1 Enforcer. Power Fist. 60 points.
Unit 3 2xRouge Psykers. CC Weapon. 32 points.

Total for the month 175 points
Army Total 629 points

Painting
The Militia squad and psykers was the same color as previous months models, I'm getting good at doing the brown color quickly and getting the ink shading smooth.
To give a bit of variety the Enforcer was painted black clothing and gold armour, his power fist was a blend of black to blood red then several layers of red ink to bring out the red more. I'm not sure if the red works, but it will do for now.

Conversions
The Militia Squad have a few smaller changes. The heavy bolter is from the chaos marine weapons. The vox was made from the cadian backpack vox which was cut up a bit so it fit in hand from the cadian heavy weapon sprues.
The Enforces powerfist was an imperial marine powerfist which was filed down as much as possible to make it smaller, the bare arm was from the catachan squad.

Highs
Has to be painting the 1/2 naked rouge psyker, he is such a good model. Resisting from painting him in the 1st month was a good idea as I gave me time to get the brown clothing paining method mastered.
Lows
Trying to get the Heavy bolter equipped militia and the militia holding lasguns single handed to look right. I spent a while trying to find suitable arms in my bit box, in the end had to settle with the ones I have used, not totally happy with them but they are working for now.

Heldane's painting. Month 3

Units complete.

5 Devestators - 115 pts
Bolters, 2 Missile Launchers

5 Devestators - 142 pts
2 Missile Launchers, bolters, Vet Sgt with combi-plas and auspex.

Total - 257 Points

TOTAL ARMY POINTS - 688 Pts

BACKGROUND/THEME: I've got an entire companies worth of marines to build and paint, all armed with mk8 errant armour and M40 pattern deathwatch bolters. Originally they were going to be Blood Ravens, but I painted a total of 5 models for them in 2 years, so I changed my mind to Raptors as I fancied doing a quick to paint and underused chapter. I do have plans to complete this force as a complete company with additional support units though.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Marines - A couple of basic conversions and weapon swaps to make the missile launchers look a little different.

The sgt is a little more exstensive with bits from 3-4 differing sources.

PAINTING:

Ogre flesh basecoat, catachan green armour with a mix of VMC ivory and desert yellow added to highlight with 2 drybrushes and 2 line highlights. After that a glaze of catachan green and brown ink. Black was done with either codex or shadow highlights depending on what it was, guns or armour. Metals are boltgun with an armour wash.

BASING:
Rocks made from plaster of paris smashed up, painted grey and drybrushed. Sand is just that, sand. Painted Scorched brown, dry brushed snakebite and then bone.

STILL TO DO:

Nothing. (YAY!)

HIGHS AND LOWS:

Actually being able to continue on with a 3rd month whilst putting most of my painting time into a 1000 point brettonian army.

Low points for this months are realising once again that I need to learn to take photo's.

Sorry have to joker. Haven't even had time to get a picture of a joker. Have only been able to assemble a unit for this moment and its not even basecoated.
Next month I'll have more time to finish these and hopefully create a bit of a buffer.

Is it an idea to allow people (like me) to atone for joker by submitting a double (so 400 points). So when I have more time in a month to paint (during holidays for example) I can earn one back? The reason for this is that now already al lot of people have either dropped out or played at least one joker. I for one would like stick with ToP and make it to the finish line.

There is some wonderful work being done by everyone involved in this project. The standard is so high I am not even going to try to pick out favorites and just say well done to everyone.

Sadly, I got distracted by too many fantasy projects last month and did not get my painting for this thread done. I have tried to get it done in the last week but have not found the time to complete them. (They are still only about 50% done as I write this.)

I will have to use one of my jokers this month.

Well done to all you guys who are keeping up the with the pace.

Well, I guess it's time for the monthly thread changeoverator, so welcome to your new WIP/working thread...

Greyclaw: More great painting, I especially like the psykers.

Heldane, SuavelyDunn, AnkhAngel: Looking forward to seeing your pics.

Everyone else: Thanks for posting your jokers. Once we have the delayed pictures in for this month it's time to start pruning out all the no-shows...

For myself, I have pretty much finished assembling the next 200 points of Nids so I should have no trouble this month. I do also have 5 Assault Marines to do for Carnage Portsmouth but that's not such a big job... right?

I like this idea. I probably will be able to pack in 400 points or so this month, what with the fresh addition of some Long Fangs, general filling-out of squads, and hopefully advancements in my painting methods.

Anyway, lots of excellent work this month. Sometime in the next few months I'll be jokering again to take a month of just assembling/basing/priming models. That's my main stumbling block, so with those out of the way it should be a cinch to make points, even with those wonderful new Chaos models sitting in my desk...

Question: anyone know of some decent wolf miniatures? I plan on having at least one unit of Fenrisian wolves, but the GW plastic wolves look a bit...not Fenris-y. They're mangy curs, which is very appropriate for gobbos, but not for the 13th Co...

Edit: Norsehawk, what is that thing standing behind the space marine? It looks downright distressing.

Sorry guys, I must have missed this before.

I think that seems reasonable. Personally, I'd rather we bend the rules and allow people to stay in the Tale than have them drop out.

Unless anyone has any objections, I'm happy to let people "claim back" the odd joker with a double post here and there, as long as it doesn't turn into everyone posting 400 points every other month. ;)

10 Dire Avengers (including Exarch with power weapon & shuriken pistol & defend skill)

Avatar

2 x Vyper Jetbikes (Starcannon & Scatter Laser)

1 x Farseer (Runes of Witnessing, Spirit Stones, Mind War, Guide)

1 x Warlock (Spirit Seer Upgrade, Enhance)

CURRENT ARMY POINTS - 613

BACKGROUND/THEME: Originally played Ulthwe Eldar for many years and bought the new codex and models earlier this year. Saw the "Carnage Tale of X Gamers" on Warseer and the eldar of Rob Peck. Loved the idea & scheme and this gave me the inspiration to start my army in July.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Not very adventurous in the conversion front so most of my figures are "out of the box".

PAINTING:
Keeping with army theme of black, bone & red.
Instrumentation panels are bright green.

BASING:
My friend has designed and produced in plaster a series of bases which match the gaming table we play on. Drybrushed grey, black edges with the addition of static grass plus leaf scatter.

STILL TO DO:
Nothing for these figures.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Low: Running out of time! Realising that something wrong with camera and being unable to use old camera to take decent pictures.:cries:
High: Through some massive effort managing to paint 3 month's worth of figures in August & September in order to catch up with the other guys.:D

NEXT MONTH:
The third vyper jetbike plus a unit of 6 rangers.

Hope that you like & look forward to feedback!

Andrew.

Well I've updated my original post with some rather bad pictures.

Here, http://warseer.com/forums/1980685-post17.html

I'll try and get some better ones soon.....need to sort out a place to take them each month.

My new card reader is now installed and working so here's my update for September:

ARMY UNITS

5x Assualt Marines (all w. meltabombs; Vet.Sarge w. master-crafted lightning claws, bolt pistol, artificer armour, combat shield) - 205 points

5x Assualt Terminators (all w. Furious Charge and Sarge w. Storm bolter) - 220 points

CURRENT ARMY POINTS - 425

BACKGROUND/THEME: *Still being written*

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Fairly 'as is' this month. I did a small conversion, to give the sergeant a storm bolter (in the style of the talon of horus) but thats all.

PAINTING:
Keeping with army theme of white and black, with brass bits.
Swapped the main colours of the shoulder pads over as I felt it followed with the Crus Terminatus taking the left side, and the chapter symbol being moved to the right.

BASING:
Still to do. (As I'm already half-way through constructing my October stuff, I should have time to go back and base all of my models so far; during this month as well).

STILL TO DO:
Basing.
And going back over them to tidy up a few things that I've spotted since finishing them.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Low: My card reader in my pc breaking.
High: Making some of the new (for me at any rate) plastic Terminators. (All I ever had before were the old metal ones. The plastics were a lot more fun to make).

NEXT MONTH:
A Land Speeder Tornado (w. Heavy Bolter & Assualt Cannon) and a Vindicator (w. Smoke launcers and a Dozer blade).

Huzar! I got the pics up in the end!

One thing AnkhAngel, I don't think you can actually give the Termie sergeant a Stormbolter, the "pair of Lightning Claws" counts as a two-handed weapon.

I thought I would do a bit of a progress post showing the 2 champions for the command groups I will be doing for this month.
It took a hard look through the GW online store to find some suitable figures but I came across some gems in the fantasy chaos collectors range. I got a few others along with these 2 for future months.
The one on the left will be the HQ champion is pretty much as brought other then removing the horns which didn't suite. The one on the right was a bit more involved, In the right hand was originally held a gun but i wanted him to be armed with a power weapon so off came the arm at the wrist and replaced with the arm from the fantasy chaos plastic warrior box. the second problem was that he didn't have feet but rather hooves. So off they came and were replaced with feet from a eldar guardian with a bit of green stuff to give the look of plate armour on the feet.
below is the painting so far.

Hey, you know those Assault marines I was going to do for last month? Yah, I did work on them yesterday. I now stand at a grand total of 2 mostly finished squad members. There are still a few small details I want to add and fix up, as well as going over the highlights to make them less ugly. This is where they stood as of 2100 hrs last night.

First the Sergeant.

Nice work Thoth, there are a couple of things I'd tweak myself...

First up, the rocks on the bases are exactly the same colour as the armour of the marines. I think making the base rocks lighter or darker would help to add more contrast.

The eyes are light blue, against a bone helmet, so they aren't very well defined. I would have a darker border around the eyes (either blackline, or paint them dark blue then add a smaller dot of light blue).

Finally, on the chainsword, I would paint the yellow so that the lighter yellow is next to the black rather than in the middle. This is more easily explained in a diagram:

As it is:

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f309/MacMullet/now.jpg

My proposal:

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f309/MacMullet/better.jpg

This helps to contrast the black and yellow, rather than having them blending together as they do now.

Thoth62
10-10-2007, 15:53
What you say makes much sense. :D

I'm a little hesitant to start fiddling around the eyes in terms of black lining. I've never had an incredibly steady hand, nor a fantasticly thin fine detal brush. I might try out the darker eyes though, it makes sense.

What would you suggest in terms of the bases? Brighter or darker? And how would I go about doing it? As of right now, they're a codex grey base with fortress grey drybrush, and slightly more extreme highlights (where they haven't been rubbed away at least).

On the topic of the sword, I actually like the way they are right now. I was going for a slightly more muted yellow, which is why I used desert yellow instead of something brighter. I'll try out the other way on the next trooper and see which one I like better.

McMullet
10-10-2007, 17:07
For the bases, I'd go darker simply because it's easier. Do a couple of fairly thick black washes over them as they are and should darken them down nicely and add some shading.

For the sword, I like the shade of yellow too, I think it matches the generally pastelly/low saturation colours you're using very well. I just thought a sharper contrast between the yellow and black might look better.

Look forward to seeing it. :)

@ Greyclaw - Nice choice on those champion figures, looks like there painting up nicely. Only nitpick is the sword hand on the second champ, it looks a bit off.

@McMullet - My total on your spreadsheet is wrong, it should be 435, you've got it as 413. Another couple of things, hows Warlords coming? How are the 'nids getting along? You should be setting the pace!

Arhalien

@Thoth: A couple of things I'd recommend: Firstly, try thinning your paints for the highlights, it will help blend them in a bit better and make them easier to paint on. Secondly, I'd recommend black-lining a bit around various joints; thinned black ink is probably the best choice for this.

@AnkhAngel: I'd recommend some blacklining and shading on your models. I think SpikyJames has some of the best shaded white I've seen so maybe talk to him for advice? One thing that confuses me a little bit is that there is some very nice blacklining on your assault marines; did you run out of time for this month?

@Greyclaw; I really like the way you highlight the browns; it is very extreme and yet it looks totally natural on the model. Do you have any advice on doing this as it's something I have a lot of trouble with; I'm always afraid of highlighting too much and making it look stupid.
Thanks :)

Thoth62
10-10-2007, 19:07
Sounds good. How exactly does one go about black lining? Is it just a thinned ink wash? Or is there something more to it?

Arhalien
10-10-2007, 19:11
Erm, basically just thinned ink applied to the recesses of the model. Make sure there isn;t too much ink on the brush or it will probably spill over and make a mess of the rest of the paintjob. You could use thinnhed black paint but an ink wash is generally easier.

One thing AnkhAngel, I don't think you can actually give the Termie sergeant a Stormbolter, the "pair of Lightning Claws" counts as a two-handed weapon.

They're listed as single-handed weapons in the Codex.

The sarge may select equipment from the armoury.
Armoury states that you can give up to 2 weapons,
of which only one may be 2 handed.
He's already equiped with the claws as part of the unit cost.
So RAW says that you can give him the armoury weapons allowance,
ON TOP of his basic load out (in this case just 1 two-handed weapon).

In the same way that the vet.sarge in the assualt squad has a bolt pistol and close combat weapon by defualt,
and I've given him a pair of lightning claws as his armoury weapon allowance.

(Sorry, this post kinda turned into a rules post :( )

Anyway, look how angry/ over-excited he is...
are you really going to tell him he's not allowed to have his gun?

I'd actually ran out of white competley by the time I'd finished the last coat of white on the termies. And without any grey I was a little stuck for shading colours.
As for blacklining them, that's one of the things I'm intending to do this month (There's a few tings that I want to tidy up on/add to them other than shading/blacklining).

I'm going to be getting paint supplies next tuesday, so i'll post some pics of a couple of them when they're cleaned up/improved.

Painting a white army is a new experience for me, and I've used fairly different methods for both squads that I've done so far.

OK, point one is easily fixed. :p I was linking to Month 2 instead of month 3. That should all be correct now.

Point 2: Aaaagh! I actually think this may be a better time to start Warlords rolling; month 3 is where we sort the wheat from the chaff, as it were, and can really see where the Tale is going. I actually have a free weekend coming up so I have no excuse whatsoever not to get the articles I have already collected arranged and sent off to be PDFified. Really. I'll do my best.

Nidwise, I have pretty much assembled everything that I was going to paint last month, so I'll finish that up soon and take some pics before I start painting. I haven't taken many WIPs recently because I've been assembling completely stock Hormies which is hardly thrilling... Oh, and Assault Marines. ;)

Thoth62

I like assault marines. :D

Speaking of, I did do some work on them last night. I did the yellow on a couple more of the chainswords, and I liked the results of the suggestion that you made, McMullet. As such, I also went back and changed the original.

I gave all the bases a heavy black ink wash, and then drybrushed codex grey overtop. They are not significantly darker, but that's ok, as I kind of wanted the grey armour to blend a bit with the surroundings. The colour scheme is as much a camo scheme as it is a chapters colours. If you know what I mean.

I also have pretty much finished up the white on the shoulderpads and helmets. The two models that were already 'finished' recieved a quick little ink treatment. It worked alright, but I need to work on my technique a little.

No pics, but all-in-all, the results seem to be what I was looking for, so I'm relatively happy. And thanks to you guys for the advice.

actually this is wrong, as next to the pair of lightning claws it say 'counts as two weapons' not 'counts as a 2 handed weapon'. ie: the claws are his 2 single handed weapons he's allowed.

Quick pictureless update, I started highlighting the rest of the assault squad last night. It's the first bit of painting I've done since I got the Baneblade on the weekend. I've got the grey and white highlights done, except for touching up the thick stuff, as well as the blacklining on the helmets and shoulderpads. It looks alright, but it's definitely somthing I'm gonna need to practice more as time goes on.

I've also got the first coat of Boltgun metal on everything that needed it, so those parts will get a highlight of chainmail tonight (hopefully) as well as finishing off the gold details. Then, all that leaves is the yellow on the chainswords, the red trim on the shoulderpads, and the chapter and fast attack symbols on the shoulderpads as well. With any amount of luck, I might even have them done tonight.

I'll also definitely see if I can get some pictures up.

Tut tut... did you get my email, by the way?

I started painting last night... PAINTING! I haven't done any of that for over a month. The water in my painting jar was nearly dried up.

I also learnt a lesson about reposing plastic: If you bend it until you feel it "give", then heat it up so it nearly melts, it resets the plastic and becomes stuff again. However, if you heat the way I do (i.e., with a cigarette lighter), anywhere that the model joined onto the sprue turns into an enormous hole due to residual strains (I had to spend Tuesday night filling a hole in the Nid Warrior's tail... :cries: ).

Well I finished apinting my bretonnian army on saturday, so that finally merans I can put some time and effort into the tale again! Already built 4 rhinos and 25 marines and got them undercoated so hopefully they'll be part of this month, although I have got up this morning and constructed a captain this morning....his armour is now complete and if the G/F gives me peace tonight he'll be done.

That said, I did pick up a masters of the chapter box the other day......hmmm, to many choices on what to paint.

Instead of a naked flame, I drop my gaunts in boiling water to re-pose them (and again to take the strain out of areas that are bent to near-breaking). I've occasionally noticed the shrinkage around injection points but (I think) much less severe than you describe.

The worst thing I ever tried to heat was one of those IG tow ropes that come on the tank accessory sprue. There's so much strain in that thing that (instead of becoming flexible as I'd hoped) it just shrank immediately to half it's original length!

Ravener looks great, by the way.

If I turn up anything else as bad as IG tow ropes I'll be sure and publicise it.

Mine's already done, and I've started working on next months... Mind you, I likely won't get that done untill the last minute...

Need to joker this month, commision works getting on top of me, plus there was the baneblade......

Oh, Mcmullet you may want to change your sig; the link to the ToPs still go toe the first thread ;)

Thoth62
30-10-2007, 20:04
The one in my sig doesn't. ;)

Arhalien

:p

One good thing about looking at the original thread is I get to see how infuriating I must have been with all my army changes :D
Is it just me or has this project become far less, erm, enthusiastic since then? There isn;t nearly as much of the friendly banter going on.

Thoth62

I'm guessing its because some of the participants are going to school now, and are no longer able to spend all of their waking moments lurking on the ToP thread. Sadly, they have classes to go to and homework to do.

I however, have no such excuse. I just lurk...

It may also have to do with the recent developments here that have greatly reduced the amount of banter and background static in the project logs.

Arhalien
30-10-2007, 20:35
Well, I;m in the first category, just here taking a quick (hah) break from homework ;)

And the second reason is a real shame IMO, although I'm not sure if it's affected the ToP thread that much directly; none of the participants were that highly involved were they?

Thoth62
30-10-2007, 20:49
I'm not sure. (although we're kind of doing exactly what is being discouraged... shhhh, don't tell anyone, o.k?)

I have found that I'm spending less time in the project logs than I used to though, mostly because those that I usually chatted with are now at the ammobunker, which I go to on occasion as well.

We should get this back on topic though... ;)

Anybody have anything on-topic to add?

I'm, like, almost done with this month's submission, and next month's is all ready for priming. I just need a free hour or two for touch-ups and Chapter symbols.

Arhalien: Yes, you're right, I need to update my sig. Whoops. As for the lack of enthusiasm, definitely the "back to school" fever is a factor, and also the change in attitude from "Wahey new thread, new project, fun fun fun!" to "Yeesh, I have another 15 Hormagaunts/Guardsmen to paint." Personally I don't think the recent hoo-har has effected things much. Now, STOP SPAMMING! :p
Thoth: Well done, looking forward to seei ng this month's work. ;)
El-Diablo: Fair enough. :)
Hawke: Nice weathering on that Iron Warrior!
Meticulous: Good stuff, looking forward to seeing them!

I'm getting there with this month's batch - they'll be 3 colours and based by tomorrow even if they are aren't 100% done.

Well, this month's update thread is a-posted: http://warseer.com/forums/general-project-logs/110551-tale-of-40k-painters-monthly-update-4-and-november-working-thread-post2052997.html#post2052997

I had big plans to get my stuff done last night but sadly I ended up in the pub until half one. Whoops.

Mcmullet, I know you just copied and pasted last months post, but all the dates are off :P

At the bottom its got octobers dates and at the top it has that its the 3rd month, not the 4th ;)

You did say to shout at you right? :P

I'll have my update up early next week.

Ugh - college. so tiring, I wish I could come on here and chat about what I'm doing but "hey guys I'm ignoring my tanks and then rush painting them on the deadline" isn't really friendly banter... more sloppyness on my part.

Most importantly, the people on the following list need to contact me if I've made a mistake because, as of the current time, they will be removed from the Tale for playing their 3rd Joker:

...

Bobo : Imperial Guard

...

Please do get in touch ASAP if I've made a mistake.

Hi Bobo, I had you down as having played 3 jokers so far which would mean you'd dropped out of the tale.... :(

We are back-and-forthing some articles to get the formats sorted now. Hopefully not too long. :)

Spent all weekend gaming and drinking so I'll finish my Nids tonight and take some photos. ;)

Yah, I finally took some pictures yesterday, but as I was distracted by some chaos that I was painting, they never got uploaded.

Edit: I'm awesome. I just got my update logged. Feels good after missing a month. Now to get my butt in gear and do this months work.

There has been since the 1st... The link is a page back or so, or you could just go clicky on the one in my sig.

Cheers.
