Played a battle today with my Orcs versus Empire.

My Big'uns were happily grinding down a unit of Greatswords and only their command group was left. A scattered mortar shot landed on the combat in the shooting phase, killing the musician and standard bearer of the Greatswords, leaving only the champion.
Would it have been possible for my greenskins to capture the Greatsword's banner when they killed the champion or was the banner lost because the model died to a shooting attack?

AFAIK, you can't capture the banner because it was lost to a ranged attack.

If the Banner is gone, it is gone - if OTOH he removed the banner bearer as a combat casualty and you subsequently won cmbat and ran him down in the same turn's pursuit, you will still capture the banner.

But in your case, the banner wasn't there anymore in the close combat phase, so - tough luck.
