Ok,

Apart from my Brits n Space project I've gotta a few other little 40k projects ticking over at the moment, a Chaos Predator, Chaos Obliterator, Chaos Space Marine and a Mangalore (Ork).

The Chaos stuff suff is being painted for my brother in law (no jokes please!!!) as I owe him a couple of favours. So first up is a Chaos Predator.

Also a command fig for my Brother. Gonna try and give it a real faded look to the armour. Ultimately the plan is for some "Soviet" themed stuff to fight the Brits I'm collecting with.

And also an Ork. I can't get the image of them looking like Mangalores from the Movie 5th Element (one of my altime favs) out of my head. I need to excercise it out by painting one as a test ........

man that really doesn look like a mangalore. I never realized that until now. Now all you need is a Bruce Willis model and a fig for "Ruby Rod" and you'll be set.

Hot damn that turret is sexy! You have an interesting painting style which I'm sure looks extremely striking on table-top. Very, very good stuff!

The Nurgle Champion looks almost phosphorous - have you thought about browning it up a bit? OTOH it might work well after weathering with the radioactive sickly look.

Don't know how Ihave missed seeing this log before but that is some really nice painting going on there, especially the manglork, very nice. Any chance of you being able to do a bit of a tutorial on your weathering effects, it looks absolutely stunning. Keep up hte good work.

This is some excellent work, its a really nice idea painting the kommando like a mangalore, would be great too see a themed army on them.
The weathering on the tank is also ace, yellow is a quite unusual colour for chaos but it works great, its got a really nice, dirty industrial ash waste look to it. Would you mind giving me a tutorial for it?, I would really appreciate it.

Yeah I'm not sure about which way to go TBH. Its a bit of a colour test and the bright sickly look wasnt where I was originally gonna go with it. Now I kinda like but kinda dont. I think I'll sit on it an ponder for a while .....

How long has it taken you so far? Hard going or easy?

Hi EB,

Its probably taken about 8hrs so far including assembly. Pretty easy going but then I paint these (attached piccies) as a day job ..... its actually quite relaxing to paint something thats not historical.

I imagine the Sci-fi element does break up the historical items nicely.

8 hours all told, a fair amount of time, but I do have to say the results say, every minute has been well spent so far.

Thnx Gents ......

And a few extra pics of the top turret hatch and the crewman. Had trouble deciding on a scheme for him so hes been left until now. Reasonably happy with his colours and will probably try them on some CSMs. Got a couple of small things to touch up but will get to them a bit further on.

Spent another 2hrs on the crewman and hatch so all up that makes about 10hrs so far. Another 2 should cut it and that was about what I thought it would take based on the larger scale historicals that I do.

Trying to talk my brother in law into getting a Land Raider next but hes talkin about either a Dread with some Forge-world bits or a Defiler ...... either way they'll go in the same yellow scheme.

Been pretty busy recently but picked up some Chaos reinforcements last weekend and finally managed to work on the Oblits base. Wipped most of the Basi together last note but now gotta give some thought to the details. Looking around for a demon head or simialr to use as a muzzel brake. Gonna put a platform at the back for the gun overseer, a lift for shells in the middle of the rear platform and exhaust stacks coming out of the square openings on the side track covers. Also just ordered some FW renegade crew for it. It'll get the same yellow treatment as the pred but thinking of a chrome gun barrel .......

And decison time, we want to make some Chaos dreadnoughts out of the defilers. Got a couple of ideas starting with us wanting them to be bigger than the normal "puny" space marine dreads. The first is a standing more traditional dread, the second has a more mecha look to it. The second may be more suited to a standing defiler type with more weapons and battlecannon tho? Either way bear in mind that they're only only bluetacked in place to get the overall pose sorted ...... anyone got any thoughts?

The first dread seems a little static and dare I say a tad uninspired?, but the other two are great.
(All IMHO off course so ignore me if you disagree :) )

Where does the assault connon come from? I've been looking for something lik that for quite a while.

I love the paintjob on the predator. By making those nasty hooks all bright and shiny you managed to make them look totally wicked.

Keep it up, for the public demands more! :)

The firey furnaces and armouries of the warp have spewed forth their latest weapon - "The Lord of War" .........

Wanted something different and a bit more imposing than the standard 40k Chaos Dreadnoughts which are really too close to the Space Marine ones for my taste. So with a lot of fonging around ( see the wips above) came up with something that works for me. Gonna make 2, the second one will be more of a close combat version with two CC power claws and quad heavy flamers .......

Yeah it may be a tad big compared to a std Dread but to my thinking a Chos Dred should be XXXX scary!

We're thinking of some house rules for em like giving them a couple of wounds or something to represent the extra size / armour. If it can work for characters we dont see why not for vehicles. Of course theres not much hiding behind terrain .......:D

Anyway on painting - Ajax (The Lord or War class Dreadnought) got his basecoat today courtesy of a Tamiya Desert Yellow spray can. Hes pictured with a few of the boys who got caught in the overspray ......... and a bonus pis of the Possessed Marines, cant pop up anymore of them at the moment as theyre on another PC. They were done mainly using the new GW washes over a GW Desert Yellow base with some flashy bits applied using Humbrol Mettallic enamels.

Hi mate,

Theres a little more to it as it starts from the shading/lightening underneath, but its really not too hard to do.

Basically I lighten sections on the mini by drybrushing with the basecoat which is progressively lightened by adding white or Bleached Bone. Then I add streaks using a mix of very thinned black/chestnut ink.

When I finish the next trooper I'll try to get some wip pics of the streaking being applied and add to the set of wip pics below ..........

Woah, that is an insanely cool dread!

Love the dusty colour scheme too, I'm thinking about schemes for my Epic Chaos and that is food for thought!

As usual a few little things to finish on him and probably gonna dirty up his fireproof smock once basing is decided on. Tea and bikkies to anyone who recognises the tatoo on his left shoulder ............

And back to true Chaos, a little progress on Ajax ....... blended back the base colour by drybrushing. Didnt worry too much about smoothing the inner bits, its going to get heavily weathered again anyway, just with a little more control this time ..........

Ok depsite the horror of having several of my own posts in a row I'll now make things even worse by adding more pics of the Chaos Predator. Although to be fair its now actually completely finished. :D

Broke off one of one of the Lascannon mounts while admiring them so broke the other one off and re-fitted them with steel pins. They dont elevate anymore but they do swivel and are a heck of a lot sturdier than the flimsy original kit ones .....

So clever, the way the Rhino's been given a "face". The weathering is outstanding and I can't wait to see Ajax given the same treatment.

I love the Flame Lordz, by the way, and want to see lots more of these guys.

I agree your weathering abilities are fenominal I need to figure it out better. I love the running paint on the hatch's pentagram. Seriously good work being done here, and I like your collection of religous zealots. What colour of red do you use for your rust? I find I tend to end up with oranges but I would like the dark red similar to yours.

Sorry for the delay in answering mate - been having all sorts of problems accessing the forum recently, getting a lot of server time out errors?

Anway the rust is 2 different recipes. For the plain rusty steel, its an Oily steel base (I mix my own but u could use Boltgun Metal), then a stipple of Dark Flesh, then Snakenite Leather finally a little Blazing Orange. Keep the stipple very dry and light. A drybrush with my rust base colour ( a mix of Dark Flesh, Codex Grey, Black) and a final dry brush with oily steel. Sounds a lot but its pretty quick to do ........

For the dark rust such as exhausts I start with my Rust base colour, then stipple with Dark Flesh which has a little Scorched Brown added. Then the same but with a tiny bit of Orange added .......

Sorry for the off-topic pic but it gives a better look at the rust colour I use on my exhausts ........

thanks for the explanation no apologies needed, the sites been sketchy at the best of times recently I seem to only get a small window in the day time when it will work for me. I'm worried about what's happening since I remember similar problems on portent...
But with the rust the pic helps show what your talking about. Is your oily steel just a darker kind of silver (dark brown/black) mix? or do you start adding to its colour right from the beginning?

...... Is your oily steel just a darker kind of silver (dark brown/black) mix? or do you start adding to its colour right from the beginning?

Its about 50/50 Chos Black and Mithral Silver. Its a bit darker than Boltgun but seems to have a slightly different sheen to it also. I use it for all my basic metal finishes now, engines, weapons etc. Wash it with thinned black and its good to go ........ I'll see if I've a pic that shows the colour on its own.

And while I'm posting I'll update the Flame Lordz, pics are a bit naff, not sure wots going on but as they've still got more work to do on em I'm not gonna take any more till later ........

Have you considered magnetising the sponsons? Allows them to twist still but no chance of snapping anything.

Thnx Bob ...... I love the old termies too. I've just started a squad of plastics at the moment so it'll be interesting to see how they measure up, I must admit in shame that they will be the first plastic terminators I've ever built ...... so far I love the posability but the detail is soft and fudged in places. They really need to go on the GW re-sculpt list and get the benefit of the newer molding tech imho.
