View Full Version : What would you take in Apocalypse that you won't usually?

Okay, maybe the Apocalypse threads are getting a bit old, but I'm genially curious. Given the general open'nes (:wtf: is that even a word) of Apocalypse, is their anything that suddenly looks a whole lot better then before in your army? Or have you come up with some crazy ideas and/or combos that just wouldn't have worked in regular 40k games?

I'll start off.
1st (finally) I can potentially field Kroot Merc.'s with my Tau army (I was always a bit jealous that other armies could take them but not my Tau the progenitors of the kroot ).
2nd Unrestricted Farsight army .
3rd,Ethereals (even Aun'Va) can really shine now that they have huge armies that can call upon thier LOS-required LD boost.

Mine aren't really that outrageous so what crazy ideas would you like to try?

-Definitely more than one Assassin.
-Inducted Imperial guards (I play SoB and usually fill out all my points with SoB units).
-My brand new Warhound :D
-More than one Orbital Strike
-3 Penitent Engines, 6 Deathcult assassins, 6 Arco-Flagellant AND 10 Repentia in the same army. Along with 3-5 shotgun wielding priests. Yeah, they usually suck, but what a sight that will be!!!.

You know, all those OMG they're coolz!!!1!11!! WOOT units that you end up never playing because you need the points for that extra seraphim unit or that extra exorcist!

You know the Culexus assassin? He's armed with a groovy weapon that gets more shots if he's near a psyker...

You know the "Last Chancers?" You can have up to 20 of 'em in an Imperial Guard army. Well, you can upgrade each and every one of 'em to be a psyker.

That Culexus can end up with something like a twenty-two shot weapon. Yeowtch! And that multiple-assassin force that's on the GW website...

Four or five Culexus dishing out twenty-two shots a turn is certainly a whole bucketfull of dice, eh?

Friendly psykers shoulden't count :eyebrows:. Still great idea .

More ideas:

The Tyranid endless swarm rule (or whatever it was for the gaunts) would be absolutely horrific in Apocalypse. Baneblade takes out a huge unit of gaunts, and guess what, their back again next turn, muhahaha.

Probably lame but what the heck, Ethereal Council all with honor blades and shield drones. Would be hell of expensive, but hey, I'd finally have an okay Tau hth unit.

First thing I'm think considering is the Land Raider Helios. There's just something about a Land Raider with Ordinance that speaks to me. :)

Just watch out someone doesn't proxy a bolt pistol as an volcano cannon.

Generally, I've just been playing around on army builder and adding the stuff that I always wanted to put in my regular list.

So we've got a squad of sniper scouts, eight assault termies in a LRC, a jump pack chaplain with an assault squad, a thunderhawk gunship, a terminus pattern landraider, and a few other goodies.

I'm the same way. With recent SM nerfage there are some things I'd never use, but now they aren't quite so stupid to take.

A brass scorpion! Although that's only for apocalypse T_T

My dream of the 30 man terminator squads all marked with the Icon ofKhorne and upgraded to champions with combi flamers :D Led by a Lord with terminator armor and marked with the Mark of Khorne and a daemon weapon!! :D

More than six troop choices (finally).
More than three tanks (finally).

A baneblade.

Also, I'm scratchbuilding a smaller dropship (than the thunderhawk) for my Templars.

1 stompa
1 armed and fully operational battle gargant
1 rapid-firing air-pressure squig launcher light artillery tank
I'm considering paradropping the squig herd I used to field under feral ork rules.
3 grot-sized fighta-bommas.
Weeeeeeeeeeee!

I can now field EVERYTHING.

Even my Four Daemon Princes and Five Chaos lords.
What can I say, when I get an idea I do a conversion.

I do need more tanks though, I seem to be a bit short on the old heavy weaponry.

An Inquisition armoured spearhead, with all three ordos represented:
a Deathwatch kill-team in a Land Raider Prometheus (house rule!)
Grey Knight terminators in a Land Raider Crusader
a Witchhunter Inquisitor with retinue (using some SOB models) in a Land Raider Purifier (twin-linked MM on the sponsons, twin heavy flamer on the front mount and a pintle storm bolter)(VDR).

My WIP-Skullhamma. Possibly a Stompa (still to be built). As my Orks are Blood Axes I can field some unusual allies, which make sense from the background: a squad Ogryns, a squad of Kroot. Stuff like that.

What about adding a Callidus to the mix? Enemies with a Ld reduced to 7 mesh well with a template weapon which targets leadership. :D

Anyway:

- hormagaunts. Haven't used them for quite some time. However, in an endless swarm, they will be priceless.
- close combat carnifexes. Just deep strike them in, and start the rampage.
- a hierophant. Just because I can.

Taking my Callidus alongside a Tyranid horde filled with psychic scream would also be pretty nifty, but I won't be trying that out in practice. ;)

Should I have the money: Warhound titan of chaos as first options. Other goodies:

- Minimum 1 baneblade
- Possessed (just to use the minis, because they are a bit unplayable now...)
- All characters I have (Kharn, Abaddon, Arhiman, soon to come Typhus...)
- Older minis like beasts of nurgle and some very old chaos space marines I have harvesting dust in the shelf...
- My 2 dreads (maybe even a third from FW)

Was thinking about taking some lictors but even in apocalypse the amount of lictors needed to seriously hurt a 10 man tact squad would be a third of my points.

I dont have the book and likely wont until christmas. My personal choice beyond "taking everything" would be to build terreign. Does it allow for static fortifications with "big guns" built in Like volcano cannons and such? If so, I would be making them as that would be less expensive then keeping up with the joneses and buying the titans and such. Are there rules out now for the cannon of khorne to be used as what it is rather then proxying it as a vindicator? That would be cool.

I have a large ammount of those original renegade models (30+ I think). I actually use them as possessed. They look different enough from reguler marines to stand out and the built in blades and mutations demonstrate what they are perfectly.

I normally have the courtesy to include one or two in my army, just for the simpathy they inspire and me and the giggliness they inspire in my fellow players which are quite newbies in the hobby :D

You can find a Defence Laser fortification datasheet on the GW site. :)

There may be a Cannon of Khorne datasheet in the player's datasheets thread (see below), but nothing in the book.

I always fancied deep striking all my 150+ Chaos Terminators led by Abbadon. I managed over a hundred in a 32k list I played last xmas, just need to finish painting and converting all the plasma combi-weapons so I can rock 'n' roll.

Oh my! Hmmm...

A company of Baneblades.

More tanks than ever.

Salamanders Tank Army; 5 Land Raiders, 4 Predators, 4 Vindicators, Razorbacks, and Rhinos. You betcha!

A pair of Warhounds of the Warp Runners or Flaming Skulls depending on which army I play.

Aircraft.

Moved house last Friday and everything is still in a box. I made the unfortunate mistake of couting everything in my Chaos armies, hence I discovered I had so many Terminators.

I'm frightened by how many (painted/ unpainted/ unfinished) Chaos Space Marines I have...:(

I'm going to build my ultimate Inquisitorial retinue. My Inquisitor has a techpriest with him, no longer is he a simple Sage, now he really is an IG Enginseer. His psyker is not a simple Mystic but rather a seperate Elite Inquisitor with no gear but psychic powers. These guys will then join a squad of Hardened Veterans led by the Inquisitors friend who is also the commander of his Inducted soldiers and his personal troops. Plus now they can hitch a ride in their Valkryie finally, or maybe a Pre-heresy Land Raider...

Apocalypse has given me the inspiration to revisit my 2 armies. For the Tyranids Im planning on making 10+ winged warriors (crap normally but chuck with a pair of flyrants...), getting the malanthrope and scythed hierodule as well as some other stuff. As for my marines, an assault squad led by a chaplain, vindicators, inquisitorial stormtroopers with baneblade and inquisitor - the list goes on!

Openness is indeed a correct, English word.

Apocalypse is allowing me to take large numbers of items that I've built over the years for fun but could never fit in a game all at once, like 20 Chaos Terminators, multiple Chaos Lords (I fielded Chaos Masters of the Chapter last weekend), more large point vehicles, multiple Dreadnought conversions, etc. I absolutely LOVE it!
