Where do these guys come from? While most crew positions can be tasked to servitors, it seems to me that a position in command of such exalted machines would be limited to honoured individuals. Are they tech priests? A special corps of Skitarii officers? Something else?

Hmm with out having the titan legion books next to me... they are guys raised from birth to pilot the titans. They are schooled in all the stuff they need to be and i think they can occasionally be moderati before being given their own titan to pilot. Have a look at the BL comic Titan as the main character is on a training run when it hits the fan...

Well, remember that the Titan Legions are the military arm of the AM, so while they are a part of the AM, they are also an organization in and of themselves and have their own system of ranks and such. Tech-priests and Skitarii are part of the "regular" AM; Titan Legion personnel don't have to necessarily be a member of some group that's part of the "regular" AM. I'd guess that the Princepses(?) form a specialist senior officer class within the hierarchy of the Titan Legions, who are selected for their exceptional mental strength and put through a special training regimen. As for where they originally come from, like where candidates for Princeps Academy are recruited from, I think it's hard to say. As far as I know, there isn't even much info about how the regular AM recruits new initiates (though if I'm wrong, I hope a more knowledgeable poster will tell us how they do it). Maybe certain individuals recruited as regular AM initiates are picked out as potential Princeps material and reassigned from the regular AM organization into the Titan Legions, where they'll be enrolled in a Princeps training program?

Actually, even that doesn't really make sense, because I'd think that the basic qualifications for becoming a tech-priest initiate might be wildly different from those required to be a Princeps, so regular AM initiates might represent a poor source of potential Princeps recruits. Qualifications to be initiated in the regular AM would probably be mainly various measures of technical aptitude, whereas the qualifications to be a Princeps would have much more in common with those of traditional military officers (plus exceptional mental resolve and willpower). So who knows. Maybe they are drawn from the Scholia Progenium, in the same manner as Assassins, stormtroopers, and various other specialized agents/warriors of the Imperium?

they are guys raised from birth to pilot the titans.

Well, if that's true, it sort of puts the kibosh on my speculation. But in that case, where do they come from initially? Like, where does the AM get these children, or infants, who will be raised to become Princepses, and what are the standards used to select them?

One minor point , but Assassin aren't drawn from the Schola Progenum, they're recruited from Feral worlds (or any pariahs brought in aboard the Blackships alongside their psyker cargo).

Well, if that's true, it sort of puts the kibosh on my speculation.

My guess is that the remark was in reference to the Princeps Cadets trained by the Collegia Titanica. Who may well be recruited from the Schola, or whereever, from a very early age. So not really at odds with your theory.

Schola Progenum? The children of an established Princeps? Random suitable potentials encountered by the Titan Legions on their travels? As to the selection criteria, who knows, the Mechanicus moves in mysterious ways... ;)

There was one fluff box in Codex Titanicus about a fresh Princeps from a Forge World noble family arriving in a warzone to take over a Titan whose commander was killed and the Legion security troops were snickering that things must really be bad if a heaven born princeling were being sent to the front. So possibly they are recruited from the upper crust of the forge world families and trained at an early age to pilot Titans.

well i know one that when a titan is hit, it screams within the head of the princepts, it not only is a machine, it has a spirt that feels pain, there was even a pricept killed by the emence pain the titan was feeling and he died, when in the titan they are phsycally connected, and the term "Princep" means "first citizen" so that probley has something to do with it

The Forgeworlds have a large population of menials (doing the stuff servitors can't do), who they recruit many of their tech-priests from. I presume anyone with military potential would be put into the Skitarii, and anyone with a strong will and tactical sense put into the Collegiate Titanica. Of course, that's not to say that's their only source of recruits. Obviously, respected families of tech-priests would probably send their kids off to serve if they had potential, and they might even be fast-tracked, since I see discrimination against menial families and especially those not from a Forgeworld as being normal.

they are guys raised from birth to pilot the titans.I don't think I've heard/read that.

I know potential princeps have to take a 7 year course before they can even think about piloting a Titan, but I don't know about Moderati.

Hope I helped! :)
