View Full Version : A Guard army of the past you'd like to see again on the store shelves ...

Which Guard army would you like the most to return ? Doesn't matter whether in plastic (though this would be better) or metal.

My favorites are Mordians and Valhallan Ice Warriors. How about you ?

Or maybe Tallarn.

I'd love to see new Valhallan models - they are what made me start collecting my guard army back in the mid-90's and I think the models still hold up really well today...

Well, there have been some rumours about a new greatcoat Guard, could that be a rennaissance of the Steel Legion ? Who knows ...

Yes, I'd love Valhallans too, because I like the "WW2 Russian" theme...I also think they would deserve it just because of that atrocious rip-off box that GW still offers on the online store ... 13 very oddly mixed Valhallans for 37 pounds  Steel Legion is quite more popular though, as far as I see (have them myself) ... :)

Tallarns. IG can definitely use an light infantry army in (Cameoline) cloaks.

My second choice would be for an IG army all wearing Carapace.

Source, a friend who worked for the company for 10 years and who keeps in touch with some still inside. It may be just wishful thinking, but it sounds quite plausible because the Catachans have become very stale and one rarely sees them played any longer, whereas the desire for affordable long coat style IG is definitely there. Just a rumour, but a fun, plausible rumour!

Personnly, I'd like to see Valhallens in plastic, I may be a Praetorian at heart, but there are many more people who'd benefit from Valhallens, and who hasnt really wanted to recreate Enemy at the Gates with a conscript horde? Go on, honestly!

ChaosMaster
23-10-2007, 23:48
Mordians sold very poorly compared to the other IG models that were out at the time, so I wouldn't expect to see them again any time soon. For years now GW has stuck with some basic IG designs that are repeated in each new IG revision: long coats (e.g., Valhallans, Steel Legion, Vostroyans), middle-of-the-road standard type soldier uniforms (e.g., Cadians), informal commando types (e.g., Catachans). Death Korps of Krieg have sold well for their enormous price while metal Vostroyans seemingly not as well for their in-between plastic and resin pricing. A plastic, affordable long-coat army like DKoK with an overall cost similar to Cadians would probably be a huge hit.

Heck, I'd love all of them to come back to be honest, I love the steel legion guys I have, the valhallans I have wanted since I started reading the Cain novels, Tallarans are just cool looking to me, Mordians, I have a few and love the prim and proper styling, and the praetorians, they are very distinctive looking with their helmets. (but they are more popular on the eastern side of the pond) I could do without the catachans tho.

Did I forget anyone (probably)

Comrades,

Tallarns

Steel legion

Valhallans

Carapace Infantry

That's the order that works for me. I need about 30 or so more Tallarns to finish off my army, but they are getting a bit pricey these days.

I'd certainly go for a new Steel legion army if the infantry were brought back to the shelves.

I've already got Mordians, and frankly, I am tired of all the Guard players busting a nut over them. Yes they are awesome. You know what is not awesome? Paying 1300 bucks to make an army of them. And you want them in plastic?

I'd like them to come out with a new brand of Guard really...something that looked like an entire army of stormtroopers - as in large, fully enclosing armor. Either that or the "Greatcoat" guard we have been promised.

Praetorians are never coming back out - GW basically abandoned them. I think they felt a bit ashamed of just how blatant an historical ripoff they were.

From the past though...from the past I would love to see a re-release of the Steel Legion.

RexTalon
24-10-2007, 04:00
If they produced plastic tallarn that looked good, I'd repaint all my cadians to be Skitarii for my Adeptus Mechanicus army, and I'd buy loads of tallarn for my IG army.

Oh, and all my cadians are the old metal ones, which I have always thought were far superior to the plastic ones.

What a load of balls. If you paint Valhallans in drab khaki and grays and give them a little red star, they're WWII Russians. If you take Steel Legion troopers with Mordians as officers, paint 'em gray with black helmets, you got fraggin' Nazis. If you so much as have a fleeting thought about Tallarn, you've ripped off Arabian irregulars from across history.

I personally like the much maligned catachans, but I think they should get more of that commando look with ammo bandoliers, big combat knives, shotguns and other assault rifles, but in firing poses. you know, dual wielding shotguns, with flames coming out the end, cartridges spewing, etc.

What if you did a Guard army with one squad of each of the various model lines?
One Cadian, one Catachan, one Steel Legion, one Vostroyan, etc. You could make the command squad one model from each. How about one other force org slot from each? Say, Cadian Russ, Catachan sentinel, Steel Legion Armored Fist, Mordian Basilisk, Tallarn Rough Riders, Valhallan Hellhound (Gotta keep warm somehow), Vostroyan Snipers, Praetorian Something Else. Maybe Praetorian 'Eavy Weapon Teams.

DKoK or Steel Legion since they can easily be converted.

I'd considered making an army of DKoK, realized they don't have models. Considered using Steel Legion, again realized they don't have models (other than extremely expensive ones). Sad times.

24-10-2007, 06:08
Well if they do another Guard army in plastic I hope they don't change the look like they did with Cadians.

I also hope they keep the Cadians and Catachans on the shelves. It would really open converting possibilities up if you had Cadians, Catachans and Grey coats.

I play a Catachan army so I really hope they don’t stop making them.

@Ktotfw: I understand your feelings. My army was horribly expensive, too. I'd probably go nuts if they came in plastic (although I think that if they dropped the design ball like they did with plastic Catachans and plastic Cadians compared to the metals I would still prefer my tin men).

24-10-2007, 06:24
Steel Legion!!! I hate the fact that my army has been "chaos dwarfed". It would be so much easier to complete my force too.

I think that the miniatures still look great next to the newer guard regiments and the background is very cool. You know that the warriors of Armageddon are not to be messed with. Plus, with all the people doing ridiculously small DKOK armies because of FW prices, GW would probably sell tons as cheaper DKOK troop fillers.

Oh and they have Yarrick.

My mates dad has alot of the old Valhallans and I just love to use them cause they make such a cool conscript unit i'd like to see them come back in plastic. As for catachans I'd like to see their jungle fighting codex come back so that ther'd be an excuse for new Sly Marbo and Iron hand Stracken models! I received the same info several months ago from an ex-GW employee who was working in development. He said that they were in the early stages of making a new great coat regiment, toying with the idea of plastic vahallans. It was nearly 2 years ago that he was still an employee, so how reliable the info is now would seem thin other than the fact I've seen in verified by others, as is the case here.

I put in a vote for Steel Legion, as I just bought a Squad box, Lieutenant and Hvy Bolter team, and it cost me AU$120 :cries:

If they do greatcoat guard, they'd better come with variant heads/bitz. They could easily do Steel Legion helmets and gasmasks, Valhallan hats, Praetorian/Mordian hats and eppaulettes... Bah, I'm dreaming. I doubt GW would have the sense to do something like that...

24-10-2007, 09:30
Tallarn, they were my first army way back in 95 (or thereabouts) and now I'm making them again! I know you can order them from the website but I'd like to be able to pick them up off a shelf. A redesign of the range would be super, not that there is anything wrong with the figures as they are at the moment, its just that they need bringing in line with the current GW style a bit more. Lots more 40k tech.

Praetorians for two reasons:

1. Lots of the english colonial style troopers backed up by wheeled Heavy Weapons is too cool.
2. If anyone has seen the film Zulu (based on the battle of Rorke's drift), then you know what i mean when i say an apoc size battle of ork's drift would be awesomeness incarnate.

Personally I'd like to see them just do a 20 man squad box for each of the 6 major guard regiments. Mabey with some extra head types so you could do steel legion/valhallans from one box etc. heavy weapon boxes might becom a bit annoying although they could just have it full of heavy weapons and arms. Then just have metal officers. It couldn't be that hard to do surely? Even if they did it the range would be way smaller than the marine range. Heck if they released one type per year they could probably draw a massive boost to the guard player base.

Mind you that won't happen so I throw my voice in with the greatcoat crowd or the Tallerns. Would be nice to see them do some new designs too like they did with the vostroyans but in plastic next time! Not that I am a big fan of the vostroyans but the idea was nice.

As far as past IG goes, however, I liked pretty much all of them except the Mordian Iron Guard and the Praetorians. Didn't Guard have suicide bombers in 1st or 2nd Ed.? Uh oh.

Anyway, I think the best thing that could happen would be several sets of pieces. I'm thinking a generic torso and leg pieces that could make some light infantry- but then parts to change them into what you want. For example, a trenchcoat piece to make your Valhallans or Steel Legion, or torso armor to make Renegade Militia. A few sprues of heads could be included for variety, and groups of armor plates so you could make Storm Troopers or Grenadiers.

Really, I just hope we get customizable plastics. I think one of the big things of owning an army is knowing that your force is unique- and with customizable pieces, this concept goes beyond paintjobs and army composition.

Imagine the sales if the Krieg army was done in plastic and more affordable! As it is, it sells well for its enormous price tag.

I always thought the Tallarn Desert Raiders had a good look to them, and it was a look that was versatile depending on how you painted them. They could be painted in white, khaki or other desert colors for a "realistic" look or something totally different to give them a robed cult-like appearance rather than the expected desert raider feel.
