See the chapter on characters and keep an eye out for rules regarding characters joining units, and targeting characters for shooting.

wait i just checked it and it says u can only fire at a cavalry if it is unit strength 5 or more a mounted mage would be unit strength 3. so u cudnt fire at it.

That's exactly what T10 said. Unless he's US 5+ he can't be targetted when he has joined a unit. Ratling Guns are another matter as they're not part of another unit, but actually outside its "parent" unit.

a mounted mage would be unit strength 3. so u cudnt fire at it.Not unless there is a 2-wound mount I am unaware of.

A mage mounted on a horse is US2.

A mage mounted on a steed with a single wound on its profile will count as a cavalry model and will have a Unit Strength of 2.

The number of wounds on the character does not translate directly into aunit strength. A Tomb King with 4 wounds has a unit strength of 1 while on foot.
