View Full Version : Litany of Hate, Word Bearers 40k log.

25-10-2007, 22:39
Hi there, A quick introduction to this log then. In honour of the new chaos codex and the way it has neatly rendered my Emperor's Children obsolete I thought I would start a new project I have been thinking about for a little while now; A Word Bearer's Army.

I eventually picked up a copy of the new 'dex and a plan began to form. As such I have today gone out and made the first purchases for my new warband.

1 Huron Blackheart
1 Chaos Terminator Lord
1 Box of Chaos Space Marines (full ten man squad)

And a bunch of red paint.

These will be coupled with my extensive bits box of chaos space marines (two other CSM armies in the bag will do that)

I plan to use a few new (to me) techniques when painting these models, Although I have yet to work out the colour scheme completely. I intend to use some NMM techniques and fully intend for everything to be properly highlighted. I don't get to play often so I intend to make these look as good as I possibly can, with no compromise. I also intend to use tihs log to develop my miniature photography skills.

Some WIP shots and so on should be forthcoming shortly, but as I write I have yet to pick up a tool. However here goes with a shot of the "work area":

25-10-2007, 22:52
your workarea looks just like mine infact is that what I think it is under the keyboard?

I do :)

Well, an update already, for those of you wondering, no I'm not fielding Huron Blackheart in my Word Bearers force, he does in fact form the base model for my Dark Apostle, The Praetor Diabolis. Here are some early WIP's shots blu-tacced together while I was waiting for some GreenStuff to go "off". I'm as yet unsure as to whether to arm him with a Bolt Pistol or a Plasma pistol, and as to whether or not I should Trim down the haft of the Accursed Crozius. Any feedback on these things would be appreciated. Also my apologies for the quality of the photos, I am yet to create a photography area.

26-10-2007, 01:35
I always imagined the Crozius as being a shorter weapon based on loyalist chaplains. It looks fine though, just a slight awkward.

26-10-2007, 01:45
Those were my thoughts exactly, I've significantly shortened it, but kept the bottom end of the haft in place, It certainly feels like a big-ass Crozius to me anyhow.

27-10-2007, 02:45
Here's an update for you. I got all productive after my green stuff "went off" so I covered all of Huron's bionics up and sorted out the mess where his head goes. I also decided on shortening the haft of his Crozius and on giving hima Plasma Pistol, the chunkiness of the pistol added some zing, I also sculpted a Word Berer's symbol onto his Right Shoulder Pad. The last thing I did was dangle to book from the Chaos Terminator Lord from his belt. I'm tryinhg to think of a way to give him a good few Impurity Seals and maybe some extra robe-type things any thoughts or link to tutorials would be appreciated. I'm also still toying with the idea of giving him yet more "Bling" and dangling some extra chains and so on from hid belt, any thoughts? I know the model is already quite bling heavy but I'm thinking "Pimp My Power Armour" here. The Tithes extracted from the cults is a three hundred percent Levy after all.

On Another note for the army I'm thinking of making some cyber daemons to use as generic Daemons and am thinking a Necron/Beastman Hybrid for this; any thoughts on viability or potential goodness of this idea? I'm also contemplating using straight Beastmen.

Anyway some pictures for you to ogle.

Crozius looks great! Looks a lot easier for him to roam the battlefield and give folks a good hit in the head.
Necrons will be hard to work with. Their body is too thin to fit well with beastmen, be prepared for GS and filing.

I can't really comment on the 'bling.' I would need a Blackheart model of my own or for you to paint it to get a good feel for the amount. If you do add some, draw the line somewhere, becasue he may end up looking like a red Black Templar if you don't.

27-10-2007, 03:06
Here's some Chaos Space Marines I knocked up for use as test models and to start turning this from one model into an army. I remember that my last Colour Sheme test model was my Emperor's Children Lord onna Bike, Fortunately my scheme worked perfectly and set the theme for the whole army. Since I'll be using more advanced painting techniques on these I want to get the technique down before I go all out on the MaliGn Monk.

Here's the shots:

RE: Red Black Templars, I do actually plan on using some Black Templar pieces throughout this army, particularly on Aspiring Champions and Icon Bearers, I also plan to throw in some Dark Angel parts. Hopefully some of those Pesky Witchfinder pieces will be corrupted to the True Gods.

27-10-2007, 04:21
If you do decide to go with "cyberdaemons", I'd recommend using the classic necrons as a base. The new ones are too thin (and I'd be afraid of them looking more like fleshy-beastrons than daemons).
If it were me (and I realize it isn't), I'd base my daemon theme on a Word Bearer archetype; give them all horribly exaggerated mouths, have some be "possessed" books and scrolls, or figure out what hatred given physical form would look like. Something like that
I'm very excited to see what you come up with - good luck!

27-10-2007, 10:09
Huron for an Apostle is a great idea.
Interested how your army will look like in the end.

02-11-2007, 02:51
Here we go folks, I've made a start on my test figure, since I plan to do the bases seperately to the models I have decided to pin the model to the base, and then for ease of painting pin the models other foot and hold it in my pin vice, this pin will be cut off when I am ready to attatch the model to the base.

This model is at the earliest stage of painting, I have undercoated with Chaos Black and followed this with an all-over drybrush of Codex Grey. The main armour plates, (shoulders, gloves, greaves thighs and breast plate) were all then basecoated with Mechrite Red, The Scab Red.

Since Taking These photos I have added a coat of Red Gore to the armour and finished it off with some light Blood Red highlights.

Then I started on the armour trim, for this area I am attempting to use some NMM techniques to give a silver effect without using metallic paints. For this I am using Codex Grey, Fortress Grey, Space Wolves Grey, Black Ink, Chaos Black and Skull White. Shortly after begininning this attempt I realised that for any future models, the trim would have to be painted first. I will tidy this up later and post photos once I have finished the armour trim and tidy up. For now, here's the firs stage of the red.

For the robes have you considered rubbing greenstuff through the chain mail loin cloth to turn it into a loin cloth thingy?
Like the Apostle conversion alot as well, though i think the crozius back part is to long.
keep up the good work, cant wait to see more

likin the work, should be most impressive when you finish the apostle,

02-11-2007, 18:21
Here we go, another bunch of shots of my test figure, he's nearly done now, I finished doing the armour trim, I rhink, tidied up the reds, painted the Legion symbol on his shoulder added some heretical litanies and an impurity seal and painted up his clothy bit. The one bit that really bugs me about the impurity seal is the wax blob, I don't think it looks right in red, any suggestions?

Thanks for looking.

I would've set the bolter a little further back, but other than that, it looks great. The red is nice and rich without being horribly bright.

Can you get a long-range shot of him? Up close, the white doesn't convince me, but I have a hunch it'll look five times better when at table height. Even me walking a few feet from the computer helped.

08-11-2007, 23:29
Here's an update; the first test model has been finished and based, I know that there are one or two bits that I should probably touch up but hey.

hey, you do realise that on that first model, on the bottom of marine hands, there is a little handle that matches up with the bolter, so it should be parallel to where the hand meets the bolter. Also why not stick the model to the base to begin with, its not really getting in the way.

To improve the painting a bit, you could use a dark red inkwash then paint the basecoat on again, leaving a bit of ink showing in the recesses of the armour plates.

Those guys look great so far. Although I would add something different to the bases. Maybe some rocks or dirt, to break it up from just the grass.

I really like the color scheme it looks you have done a very good job painting the red. The white looks also very good.

Keep it up,

I agree that the models look great but the baces let them down a bit.

Have you worked out an army list yet? ? ?

21-11-2007, 17:09
Looking good so far. I am liking the way you have pulled off the colour scheme. Can't wait to see more.

21-11-2007, 20:34
very nice, I really like the tone of the red and the general neatness.
Unfortunatley they are let down a bit by how onky the bolters are, maybe you wanna assemble them in a differnet order?

My 2cents,

21-11-2007, 23:14
looking good, although i prefer the more magenta-ish colours of the codex scheme. nice work, though.

21-11-2007, 23:53
Generally when I assemble models without bolters, I use a spare one in order to get the arms aligned correctly. And yes the trigger-guard is in the hand itself, it should match up with where the one on the bolter was.

It is a nice red though, and bravo on not going metallic on the trim.

22-11-2007, 01:47
It's been a while since I did anything with these, but to address some of the comments.

a) The bolter positioning, I used the same boltgun to guesstimate the position of the arms while building them, there may have been some slippage and or variation in shape of the arms since. Also the progress I have made on the subsequent models I actually paid attention and lined the bolters up right. (It's been a while since I built a bolter marine) I also figure that once the rest of the army is there to surround him Mr. first model with the wonky bolter will just fade into the mob.

b) The bases I know what you are saying about it looking like mossy-grassy type stuff, but that wasn't actually my plan at all, I'm still working on the idea, but the plan was for kind of greenish obsidian kind of effect, I'm thinking of re-doing them all with flat pieces of slate and doing it that way. Please bear in mind that I am still only really finding my feet with a new army, and am in the process of developing the colour scheme and basing scheme.

c)Army List? hardly I've built 5 bolter marines and my Dark Apostle, the only thing I'm thinking is Marine squad sizes of twelve, for fluff reasons and some truly "generic" looking Daemons. I'm actually considering fielding them as a tactically long range army with a few bits and bobs in Heavy support and totally eschewing close combat. But then I don't get to build any new Possessed and that would be a shame. I'm kind of planning to do much as I did with my 'nid army, build as I go and have as many options as possible so that any potential army cn be fielded. But definately no bikes. (I love bikes, I love the rules and the models, but having built an all-biker Emperor's Children Army using the old Codex I'm now a little tired of bikes and any future bikes will be painted pink as I expand the Emperor's Children to an Apocalypse Sized Biker Force of Doom! 12 6 man bike squads and some token troops choices anyone? ouch!

c) The Red, I'm glad so many of you like it, Mad Larkin UK - I did actually apply a red ink wash and it did very little to the overall colour, so I painted back over it to take off the shine, which actually detracted. 3vilX - this is where it all comes to opinion - I think that the latest version of the "Codex" Word Bearers scheme looks too pinkish, I always pictured them with a darker red to contrast with the bright, freshly spilled blood red of the World Eaters, but that's just me.

e) AmKhaibitu - I'm just curious about your opinion on my attempts at silver trim without the metallics, am I in anyway pulling it off successfully? I'm not quite sure.

Thanks a lot for the comments folks I'll have quite an update on the way for you within the hour, but first to upload a buttload of photos to Photobucket!

EDIT: post 200....

22-11-2007, 02:16
As Promised that update, right, I've finished the second model, apart from the one thing you are all going to yell at me, i know his foot doesn't meet the floor, but I got the pins in the wrong place so I'll just have to put something in the hole to hide the gap, suggestions anyone?

Here goes with the photos.

Model's Right:

I may even post some WIP shots of the fourth but that doesn't strike me as particularly interesting since in essence he's just another Chaos Space Marine not yet holding a Bolter.

Oh and can anyone give me any feedback on the bolters themselves? I'm aiming to go for that ultra modern blacked out weaponry we see toay rather than the traditional super-shiny boltgun, any opinions as to it's validity as an idea? any comments on wether I have achieved that? any suggestions for how I could do it better?

22-11-2007, 03:18
The dark guns stand out against the brighter red and white and i think it makes them look unfinished to be honest.
I would maybe try and add alittle more detail, even if its just in shades of grey and what not.

besides that looking great

28-12-2007, 02:41
An update, please not that this post is also in the M,P & T general discussion but is presented here for completeness sake, I have also finished the first five, and updated their boltguns to include some small detailing, pictures will follow within the week.

Presented Here for your viewing pleasure some work in progress shots of my Dark Apostle. I shall show you some unpainted versions first then move on to the current and fairly initial stage of painting, any comments and constructive critiscisms will be appreciated as will any unconditional praise.

The Dark Apsotle is based off of the Huron Blackheat model, but I'm sure you'll see no resemblance.

here goes.

Very Impressive. I hope my guys can end up half as well as that.

28-12-2007, 04:49
Hell, my first instinct was to say keep him just as the drybrushed white on black. That looks good. Looking forward to seeing some more red on him.

If you want a better obsidian effect for your bases you just need to a) use less paint and b) when you drybrush make sure all of your strokes are going in the same loosely diagonal direction, this creates a nice and simple "marblized" effect (in my experience).

Also: I like the grey trim, it has a nice rough stone look to it, plus props for non-metallic bolters!

I'm toying with the idea of just keeping his shoulder pads in Red in a manner representative of his former position as a Chaplain. Although I'm still not quite sure.

As you can see I've opted to attempt to paint the top-knot as a flame, any opinions, I'm not quite sure about it. it is my first attempt at such a thing, I can understand why most people paint their flames inside out now.

30-12-2007, 17:16
And here's a group shot, as you can see i've gone back over the bolters based on some critiscism I recieved, i think it was for the best.

thanks christmas.

May I present for your viewing pleasure, some progress?

I've added some gold bling, and finished off the Crozius, book and armour plates, no I haven't done anything about the head, mainly because I have no idea what to do. I have also for the first time cropped the images into a more extreme close up, which shows my brushwork up to it's truly rubbish state. But then, the photos are very enlarged by comparison with life, so what does it really matter?

Model's Left:
Model's Right:

08-01-2008, 00:03
I'll also include some close up shots of the back of the Crozius head and the book

The Back of the Crozius shows my very first attempt at some source lighting, I've gone for only limited effect, is it too small, any suggestions on improving it?
Oh and for the missed bits on the staff, those have been cleaned up now, didn't notice till after I'd taken the photo and uploaded it.

The book is currently being finished with gold on the corners instead of the silver.

08-01-2008, 04:02
I like it, a lot. Very intimidating. I should do a squad of Word Bearers for my Chaos army, I've never actually painted good, strong reds before...

17-01-2008, 01:25
Why you lucky, lucky people you're all in for an update!

Work has progressed on my Dark Apostle and here for your viewing pleasure he is. I have finished his core body, added a shoulder cape and his other arm. Since photography I have also mounted him on his base and added an extra secret surprise, still to do: his backpack. Coming Soon in all his Glory shall be the Perverse Preacher.

But until then.

This post contains group shots of all the new bits and bits worked on since previous updates, all tastefully captured in one image.

The Crozius has been tidied up, the chest rag has been added and my second experiment with Source Lighting in the form of his Plasma pistol, the pictures of the sculpted Legion Symbol didn't come out too well, but hey.

I like what you've done so far.

Your Dark Apostle looks great (I too purchased the Huron but kept it as it is ;)), the various conversions make it look quite distinct.

If I were to suggest one improvement, then it would be to try some blacklining to neaten up the paintjob a bit. Otherwise, looking great!

17-01-2008, 20:00
Yeah I agree with Mr Feral, just a little bit of neatening up will really briong out the life in these models

18-01-2008, 02:59
I can't say I dig the cloth hanging off his chest/arm, but the plasma pistol (and the whole model) look excellent, especially after you clean up that little burp of cloth paint on the shoulder.

30-01-2008, 03:09
Finally complete I present to you in his unholy glory, the Malign Monk, the Dire Damagogue, the Perverse Preacher, Dark Apostle Carnac of The Word Bearer Legion, Blessed of Lorgar and Ambassador of the Gods of the Immaterium.

Please leave as much critique and criticism as possible for I have had this model complete for a week and am still impressed by it more than any other model in my collection.

First I give you the traditional 360 of the model.

Right, here goes, I have actually been making some slow progress on this army, budget and time constraints have hit a little heavily, no more completed models yet, but here's a quick WIP shot of the latest batch of five Marines. These include the Aspiring Champion, Icon Bearer and two special weapon Marines, (Flamer and Melta Gun) plus another Bolter Marine. I've used a few Black Templar pieces here, mainly shoulder pads and weapons, although the icon bearer is wearing a tabard from it. His Bolter was made cut'n'shut style from a Black Templars Bolt Pistol and a CSM Bolter, it ain't perfect but it'll do.

Based on some critiscism I've been more careful with the black lining that seemed to have gone missing, it really helps.

Backpacks and bases are on the way, and they all need some minor extra details like the inmpurity seals/litanies. I really want to get them finished by the end of the weekend so I can start butchering that Flagellant box to make some more interesting Bolt Pistol/CCW Marines, after that I'm thinking some Terminators with Aspiring Champion/Lord - My Coryphaus then some Possessed. I think that eventually I will be adding a Dreadnaught converted from the SM kit and a Land Raider, possibly some Melta Havocs and some Rhinos or Vindicators or both. I like the idea of them a s a mid-ranged assault army with quite a lot of melta weapons. I may need to pluck up the courage and cash for a ForgeWorld order, but not for superheavies, at least not yet.

Anyway the photo:

C&C please

11-04-2008, 20:50
That new squad-ette looks great! The more I look the more I like it, especially with the blacklining - it's looking much better.

Can we get some shots of the BT shoulder pads?

Mr Feral
11-04-2008, 20:55
They look really good! The red seems so smooth and rich in colour, and the BT parts fit in well (especially the tabard!).

15-05-2008, 21:35
I think you could do with laying off the grey dry brushing a little , it looks really good in some places and bad in others such as the boltguns.
You might want to use a bit more detail in some places like the eyes and helmets but as mentioned above it might make the models look boring. The bases don't look right on the model except from the apostle.
The apostle looks really good but I'am not a big fan of the other models though but they do look good though.

15-05-2008, 23:44
Thanks for all the comments folks, and an apology for lack of promised updates. There is progress along the way I promise.

Just to quickly address some of the comments raised by kaimarion,

1. The bases I know are a little (a lot?) off, I have worked on this for some as of yet unphotographed models and it looks a lot better, I think I can achieve some semblance of it with the bases on those five. I think I went a bit overboard highlighting them to be honest, the newer ones are simultaneously more and less detailed.

2.The first five Bolters' grey parts were completed after I had finished the models so to speak and so were quite rushed, I've been a lot more careful with the later ones and I feel I've got them down now, hopefully you'll see a difference.

3. How do I say this, I'm not exactly a fan of these first examples either (apart from the Apsotle of course) They were more of an exercise in getting the techniques and look how I wanted them, rather than as something more elaborate, I wanted to see if I could achieve anything like it rather than go to a lot of trouble only to find out I couldn't. This may be why I'm struggling to find the motivation to finish painting them! After all they are a bunch of CSM's with Boltguns assembled straight from the box bar the odd impurity seal and BT part. I see them more as a start than anything else.

Anyway thanks again to everyone who has commented so far and I hope I can actually get some paint onto models and photos onto the 'net for your future perusal before too long.

16-06-2008, 13:07
Here's some update for you. WiP shots of the next squad, I've spent quite a lot of time on these so far using CSM, BT and FLagellant parts to make 'em, there may be an odd extra bit in there as well not to mention Green Stuff. I decided to go all out and try for some more dynamic posing, hopefully, I haven't fluffed it too badly.

Here's the photos:

17-06-2008, 17:20
Finally I can present to you the completed models for my first squad, it's only taken how many months to get 11 Marines finished? ah well, I guess we'llo just have to accept that progress will be slow.

so here's the Aspiring Champion with Black Templar shoulder pad and Power Sword
I've included some detail shots of the front and back of the sword to try and illuminate the lightning effect I was trying for.

Now: The Icon Bearer and the Melta Gunner, the Icon this time is just the standard Icon of Chaos Glory, the Chained up Bolter was a cut and shut from a Black Templars Bolt Pistol arm and a CSM Bolter.
The Backpack topper for the Meltagunner was snipped off the Icon of Khorne included in the CSM box if anyone was wondering.

Finally the last Bolter Marine and a Flamer toting Marine. I decided to use blue as a base for the flesh tones to add another colour to the pallette and to try and look a bit creepy. I also painted a small blue pilot flame on his Flamer.

Thanks for looking and please, let me know what you think so far.

Right, long overdue I have some updating to do.

I've been making slow progress on the second squad and have some PiP shots to show you I've done the mchampion and three of his cronies, obviously they still need backpacks and bases, but that comes later Here's the pics:

Comments would be appreciated - I've tried to paint the brazier atop the champion's helmet with the flames the right way out, but it's quite triacky.

I have also just treated myself to a box of terminators and some Chaos Knights to celebrate a promotion at work. I'm still trying to work out how to build the terminators, I've got parts aplenty with the boxed set and the left over parts from my Chaos Lord kit and I intend to build 6 Terminators one of which will do double duty as either a Champion or a Lord - he will be the Koryphaus of my Warband (See Dark Apostle) I am slightly uncertain as to how to best equip him and the rest of my terminators, I intend to include an Icon of Chaos Glory modelled from Chaos Knight parts but am trying to work out the best mix of power weapons, combi weapons, Power Fists, Lightning Claws, Chain fists and heavy weapons.

I'm leaning towards two combi meltas, a Heavy Flamer, three combi-bolters, four Power Weapons, a Lightning Claw and a Chainfist. Although I'm also considering a twin Lightning Claw build.

Anyone have any thoughts?

They all look great! Especially the one with the two-handed mail!

Thanks, I thought it would make a nicely different kind of Power Weapon.

very nice word bearers you have here. the only gripe is the knight helm...i think that is way to loyalist looking... now a black knight with his arms/one leg cut off wouldn't look half bad.

*Creak, footsteps, click*

yup, I'm back at with the Word Bearers, I realise it's been a while but I've been pretty busy over the last couple of years, anyway, no further ado: an update.

I've been working on some vehicles, in particular a Dreadnought and a Rhino. here are so WiP's

I've got the interior done now:

05-05-2011, 18:23

And I've started to basecoat the exterior

And here are a few shots from the Apostle Dread...

05-05-2011, 18:24

there's more on the way, been building chosen and terminators, and a plan for more rhino's and a few other bits and pieces, also working some ghouls into daemons as on of my packs.

Thanks for Looking

Welcome back! And with a bang I see. That is a SICK dread! Can't wait to see it finished. Anything you've been working on besides that in the last 2+ish years? :P

07-05-2011, 18:21
Just my career and moving house, starting a family I'm afraid... time consuming stuff!

Ahhh, that's good. Best of luck to you on your journey my friend :)

man, do I want to see that dreadnought fully assembled and painted.

I've been trying to decide if I'm gonna buy meself one of those, so was it hard getting rid of all the blood angel iconography?

I've been trying to decide if I'm gonna buy meself one of those, so was it hard getting rid of all the blood angel iconography?

It was much easier than i expected actually, although some bits were trickier than othes, i basically just used an actually relatively old craft knife, although a Xacto would have probably been easier and an assortment of needle files. I've repositioned the legs a bit too actually but no pics of that yet, still trying to figure out what to do with the feet and working out wether to use the supplied base or model my own.

I'm not sure how clear it is in the picture but I actually combined two of the front plates together, the Librarian one and the Death Company one. I suppose I could even use the leftover Furioso one to go on the base as a fallen foe... although it might be too much red....

14-05-2011, 19:55
Here's an update on the dread, still not quite there but still.

and a close up of his victim,
I'm trying to work out the backpack issue when making space marine casualties, because they tip them up and the look silly if you're not careful. Any thoughts on what I should do here? As ever all comments greatfully received.

17-05-2011, 08:35
put him on his stomach, then the backpack will fit AND it looks as he was trying to get away but wasn't fast enough... :)

18-05-2011, 02:04
That Dread is amazing. I was wondering whether or not to add one to my Death Guard army, but after seeing yours I definately am!

09-06-2011, 14:20
Here's am update on the Rhino, still plenty to do, but you can see where I'm going with it a bit better now.

Also got the dread undercoated, so some progress on that shortly although the missus is now 5 days overdue so we'll see what happens!

20-07-2011, 20:37
Here's an update for y'all, two things, one some shots of progress on th Rhino and two my new bases, I've decided to completely re-do the basing scheme for the entire army, since I've still only based 11 figuresI figure I've not got too much extra work to do. more on that later anyway on with the Rhino.

Still to do, finishing the bookand cloth on the door, the censor on the door, some more bullet holes, finish the front windows and lights, and the ramming spikes. I also want to add some kind of tactical markings to designate the tank from above a little more, but am at a bit of a loss. Obviously the Codex Astartes came after the Heresy therefore I am unsure of precisely what manner of markings the Word Bearers would have used on their vehicles.

and here's the bases.
I'm really pleased with how these came out.

24-07-2011, 05:57
Cool chaos army. I especially like your non-metal metalics. The new bases are excellent, though your dark apostle's was great. Your dread's nice too, brother wants to do something similar for his orks.

24-07-2011, 19:43
Good stuff, 5 stars!

25-07-2011, 01:01
Looking great! Loving the bright colours and the flame hair pieces look awesome! Can't wait to see the Dread!

25-07-2011, 01:35
Thanks guys, i'm going to try and merge the new and old bases on the Dark Apostle, and have the chaos spike sticking up through broken tiles.

14-09-2011, 21:33
Here's an update, with the marines on their new bases, and the Lord's bases redone too. Let me know what you think.

14-09-2011, 21:49
Lord looks good.
I think that pics don't do justice to the model, too agressive flash methinks

14-09-2011, 22:10
That and I was focussing on the base...

25-09-2012, 08:25
Right, some WiP shots of the Dread, these are taken with a camera phone I'm afraid but you can see where I'm going

thanks for looking

Right, so it's been an age again, but I have been making progress once more, the Apostle Dread is all but done, here are some photos, I just need to decide what to put on the sarcophagus front. I've tried a few things but nothing has quite wprked yet, suggestions on a postcard please.

So on with some photos:

Whaddya think?

Oh, and having to resort to phone photos as PC is now so old as to barely be able to function, however, phone cameras are so much better these days.

20-07-2014, 08:19
Really liking that dread. The crucified skeleton on the back is a great touch, and the ccw arm looks terrifying. It's very Word Bearers, and very intimidating. I love it!

22-07-2014, 19:04
I've finished the freehand front panel for the time being, I've tried several things including an attempt at recreating a Hieronymous Bosch painting and a tribute to the significant battles that marked the heresy for the Word Bearers, but couldn't get either right. In the end I've gone with an image to capture the spirit of 'The Penitent'.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140722_001-1.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140722_001-1.jpg.html)http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140722_002.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140722_002.jpg.html)

It looks better from a distance, but I'm reasonably pleased with it. With this done I think I have finally finished a model that I have been working on intermittently for the last three years!

11-08-2014, 18:00
Here's a little work in progress shot of an objective marker I've been working on. As I have been coming to terms with the lacklustre nature of chaos armies in straight up forghts I've been working on devising custom scenarios to play out to somewhat level the playing field. This is an objective I have decided with a scenario/ series of scenarios in mind. He's some kind of mechanicum data-servitor which means he can be storing Intel on some maguffin or hold codes to certain locked facilities/ weapons network, or just a link to the local noo-sphere allowing for a campaign effect. So scenario ideas sorted here he is.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140811_008-1.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140811_008-1.jpg.html)http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140811_009.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140811_009.jpg.html)http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140811_011.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WP_20140811_011.jpg.html)

I'm planning on popping him on a 40mm base, and I'd like to have him interacting with something on the base, so I need some kind of techy looking terminal column to sit under his outstretched hand I think.

14-08-2014, 08:52
So this is the daemon prince figure I have been building not to use as an HQ choice, but just in case I hit Dark Apotheosis on the boon table. This explains the lack of wings and wargear. So far I've got the main basecoats on, here are some shots, I'm a little worried that there won't be enough red on the model to really sell the Word Bearer theme, but if what I have planned comes together then I should be OK. This why I've sculpted the flames around the head to represent the legion symbol.

I've done a bit more on the right arm, which is giving me an idea as to how things will look at the end, although that isn't finished yet.

Cheers for looking and apologies for the shed background.

So, another long gap, I've done some work on some mark of slaanesh possessed marines using parts from the fantasy helstriders kit. The red recipe has changed a bit with the new paints. I've got one finished bar basing and backpack, although the naff camera phone photos only show before I finished the bone coloured parts.

First off some early build shots
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WP_20150103_002.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WP_20150103_002.jpg.html)

Basecoats on

And then the most complete one.

Anyway, cheers for looking.

Okay so, I've made progress, photos are again from the phone in evening daylight, but still wip so they'll do for now.

I've got four done bar the backpacks and added a Vrosh Tattersoul conversion to a) bulk the squad out to slaanesh's sacred number (oldemperor's children player) and b) make a more fitting champion than my original. To match a theme running through my army he'll have abone helmet and black breastplate, unfortunately this means relegating the idea of the hourglass on the demoted possessed, or buying loads more flagellants to get more for the rest of the squad.

I've put them on 32mm bases and the mosaic on their bases loosely joins up over an icon of slaanesh, and again suits the army theme, I've used one of the edge paints for the runes on the tiles, the equivalent of Lucius Lilac.

I'm pretty happy with how these guys are coming along, the helstrider parts have worked nicely and I've got some I defeating profiles from the non-standard armour parts I've used.

So, during the downtime I have made some progress with a few things for this old log. Including some new photos of old things.

First off new shots of the Dark Apostle:
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WBApostle.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WBApostle.jpg.html)

Now the finished shots of the possessed:

To follow will be cultists, new dread pics and some terminators.

18-12-2016, 17:56
Those look pretty good, love the conversions on the Possessed and the Apostle. Kind of brings to mind John Blanche, without all of the rust and yellow and gribbliness. I really like the background you've got too, is that a Photoshop addition or something else?

Dark Vengeance Helbrute, I made a few tweaks, so it's a new head, I got rid of a few tentacles and so on and added the trophy racks from the plastic Daemon Prince kit. I quite enjoyed doing this one.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/DSC_0281.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/DSC_0281.jpg.html)

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/DSC_0276.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/DSC_0276.jpg.html)

And both together:
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/DSC_0298.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/DSC_0298.jpg.html)

I've had to change the recipe/method for doing the reds, partly due to the evolution of the citadel paints range, but I think that a) the new version is better and b) that it is similar enough as an end point that they work together.

Thanks, although I've never actually been a huge Blanche fan, I tend to find his stuff cluttered and messy-looking, although I do recognise the importance of his work in developing the visual style of 40k.

The background is one I found online and printed out for use in my makeshift light box (made out of an old fish tank and some polythene document sleeves.).

Really cool stuff! I just have to get myself a Furioso Chappy dread and make my own Apostle Dread. Awesome in the Helforged Warpack. A Dread with a 4++ and Character! :D

The Possessed look really good on 32mm bases too, have to switch mine, though it feels like such a hassle. :/

The furioso is a great kit to work with, I actually used a combination of the death company and Librarian front plates to make mine.

I'm torn with 32mm bases, part of me wants to go back and put all the Marines onto them, but I'm just going to keep them for chosen, Possessed, raptors and so on I think.

18-12-2016, 22:33
Next up are some cultists, i think I've managed to get quite good mileage out of the monopose figures, I have also mixed in a few flagellants and bits and pieces from elsewhere. I've got more that I haven't finished yet, but here's the first twenty:

10 with autoguns
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa103/welshmalign/Word%20Bearers/WBCult01.jpg (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/welshmalign/media/Word%20Bearers/WBCult01.jpg.html)

10 with pistols and CCW

Finally: Terminators, just the standard plastic kit, sprinkled with parts from various sources to snazz them up. I also mixed the terminator lord kit in with the squad.

This last one is the unit champion, but also doubles as a lord if required. The way I am building the fluff for my army is that there is a council of acolytes that advise the apostle, each leads his own coterie, the terminators Acolyte serves more in the role of coryphaus

Ah! The old super tusk Terminator! It has so much character! Excellent work!

Here's a quick and dirty update on some more close combat weapon cultists, it's just a mobile shot bit I'll save a proper photo for when the whole unit is done.

I've been enjoying the exercise of painting the different fabrics and trying to get the textures right in a variety of colours. It's a nice challenge and provides a bit more variety than power armour. That said, they take a long time for the points that they are worth. Hey ho.

I picked up the new Exalted Sorcerer kit with the intent of mixing it with the Dark Vengeance Chosen to make some summoners to take advantage of the legion rules in Traitor Legions.

Here are some early WiP shots of the first one I've been working on.

As you can see he is currently held together with White Tack and Swearing, I am still trying to decide
A) what to use to replace the Bolter I cut away from under his right arm, as I need something to go on the strap, current fly using a scroll lifted from the Black Templars sprues.
B) whether or not to give him a head swap, options would include heads from possessed, raptors, or the Sorcerer kit - really unsure here I'm inclined to leave him as is to be honest, as I suspect that curring his head off will be a chore.
C) what to do with the holster I have on his left hip, as the current version is the wrong way around, but I don't seem to have any holsters that go the other way.

I'm quite pleased with progress so far, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Loving those cultists. They remain my favourite unit in the army. I do sympathise with the points per painted model though. :/

I was looking through yours the other day, actually, loads of cool, character full old Necromunda ones creeping in was cool, I've been trying to find my brother's old ratskins, but I think he must have flogged them years ago. I just need four more autogun dudes...

I have a bunch of potential converts sitting in detox. I just can't bring myself to clean them. Yet . . .

Started work on a second Sorcerer, this one is based on Kranon and has a staff, I will need to do a spot of green stuff work on this one to fill some gaps, and rebuild the back of his head. I feel like I should be painting his body separately from his cloak and arms, but I'm not sure I'll be actually assemble him if I attach the staff where his sword was. Then again I don't want to be messing about with green stuff that close to areas I've already painted, and I've got quite a significant gap to fill.

Might be in danger of getting carried away with making Sorcerers now, but here are two more, one more from the chosen and one more based on the Exalted Sorcerers.

Five more close combat cultists done, better photos in due course.

Nice additions to the cult, though I do feel sorry for the chap in the shackles trying to aim his gun.

Not that it matters; they never hit anything anyway. :)

18-01-2017, 21:35
Started work on painting sorcerers, first up is the one with the axe, reds are done, and basecoats on the rest, not 100% convinced about the blue loincloth.

Photo has a filter on it to try and improve colour fidelity on the phone shot, but it's far from perfect.

More work on the Sorcerer, robes are done, basecoats on for the gold bits and started on the armour trim, I've finished the feather hanging from his belt, for now at any rate, although this picture doesn't really show it very well as it is mostly behind him.

I'm pretty pleased with how this is shaping up so far, but any comments or advice would be appreciated.

So I've finished the Sorcerer with Force Axe, and I'm pretty pleased with him to be fair. I snaffled some of the silver tower familiars from eBay a while ago and I've painted one up to go along with him.

More cultists - five more with autoguns, including one made from an old plastic Orlock ganger!

I'm quite glad to be nearly done with these now, and since I am out of autoguns and cash to finish off this unit with for the time being it looks like it might be a little while until I find ish the last five cultists.

Anyway here's a quick phone snap:

Some work done on painting the first Sorcerer I built.

Reds are done, cloth and horns are done, trim needs final white highlights, sword needs finishing, so do other bits of details, scripture etc.

Any comments so far?

Your speed putting it all together is incredible! Having too many Chaos Sorcerers isnt so bad with the Cyclopia Cabal around. and nice use of the DV chosen, brilliant models for HQs.

Nice highlights on the Red/Black of the armor; simple but well executed around the plates and trim. Last guys sword and handle looks daft. maybe should've pinned it in the same angled direction so the pistol grip would be directing the sword. All the sorcerous pointing hands are great.

Jealous of your cultists! good work getting them all chopped together and painted up!

I dunno about speed man, this log started nearly ten years ago, the cultists alone took over six-month that start to finish so I'm not sure at all.

I struggled with the sword for a while, it actually looks less funky with the icon hanging from the grip painted, so I think I'm going to chalk this one up to experience and leave it as is for now, as I suspect that any attempt I make to effect a repair will cause more damage than it fixes.

Thanks for the comments on the cultists, you've got a fair few of your own there!

My cultists, like most projects are build and move on. That last step, painting is the kicker

Krannon; just get him built first, noo way is messing with GS on a painted model a good idea

Hmm so I accidentally deleted my post while trying to edit it, let's hope this works:

Re: Krannon model I managed to build him in two parts that I can put together after paint, so that's all good.

Re: painting I quite enjoy that side and by keeping my budget tight it forces me to stick with projects until they are finished rather than chasing off after new ideas. (I have a Tyranid army with around a hundred gaunts of which only one model is unfinished and that's because it's so big I got lost and fed up, I started this log shortly after and haven't really gone back to the nids, much as I like them because I don't have the funds to get the army workable at present)

Here's an update on the sorcerer, although since these photos were taken, thanks to someone elsewhere echoing dugaal's critique re: sword I have used the hilt of a sheathed sword from the bezerker kit to extend the hilt of his sword, which looks a lot better, it tapers nicely to justify the hand position, that was formerly on the pistol grip of the chosen model.

The paint job is really good, but the hilt for that sword just looks a bit puny. I realize that it's the bolt pistol grip, but a sword of that size needs a longer hilt to balance the model out.

I love the trim too, it looks like really shiny but really dark metal.

Cheers dude, I've fixed the hilt already, as you will see in the next update, it really has made a big improvement.

Glad you like the trim.

That looks much better for the sword, good stuff. I like the bone colors on the hilt too, lends that daemonic feel to it.

Here's a detail shot of the book before I put the backpack on and his half of it with his cape. The runes are the "face of..." Runes taken from the GW dark toungue runes one for each god to represent Daemonology.

So a good few years ago when I started working on this army I was using a completely different set of paints and some different techniques to paint them up, at the time (back in 2008!) I built and half finished a CSM squad with Close combat weapons. Now I am planning on finishing them off, but GW no longer even produce half the paints I was using and the new style looks much nicer anyway. If I just finish the five remaining Marines then there will be a clash, not to mention the fact that I leave backpacks until last so the Marines will even clash with their backpacks!

I am hoping to manage to update the existing paintjobs without needing to redo the whole thing in order to avoid a mismatched unit. My plan is to add the wazdakka red/trollslayer orange mix highlights to the existing reds and to darken the trim with nuln oil and then finish off with the last highlight steps - administratum grey and white scar, I'm not expecting a perfect match, but so long as I can get somewhere close then that should be OK.

Here's some old photos of my old progress.

Thanks dugaal, when I look back at some of my older stuff I can see how things were developing even then towards my current methods. The odd thing is that I haven't been painting anything else in between working on these, just long gaps doing stuff outside the hobby.

The good news is that my approach to modernising the old paint jobs seems to be working, I'm not expecting them to be a 100% match, but they will certainly be a lot closer. The only other thing is bases, I am torn as to whether or not to switch them all to 32mm, which is increasingly tempting.

25-02-2017, 17:06
I'm switching over to 32mm, there's just so much more real estate to customize the bases with. That, and it just kind of adds presence to the models, gives them the illusion of being larger.

The finished sorcerer looks awesome too. It's a good use of the Exalted Sorcerer cloak, and adds just that much more dynamism and volume. The rune on the book are another nice touch, your detail work is pretty good.

26-02-2017, 09:03
I love th the dude with the doubled handed morning star, is that the old Emperor's Champion model?

26-02-2017, 10:10
I love th the dude with the doubled handed morning star, is that the old Emperor's Champion model?

Cheers Danny, no he's just built out of CSM parts with some black templars upgrades and bits from the flagellants kit. His power maul/morning star is a templar power axe haft and a flail top from the flagellants and the second hand is just a repositioned left bolter arm for a CSM. Glad you like him, he was where is started to really get a feel for doing the trim better, there's a real difference between him and some of the others in the squad and you can see how it has lead to what I do now.

Thanks Ssilmath, I really liked the way that that specific cloak followed around the model, and worked with the rest of The figure, the only shame is that to get the backpack to fit was by adding a spacer made of sprue offcut.

26-02-2017, 20:07
Here's how I've got on with updating the first of these old marines, I still need to edge highlight his feet since deciding to paint them red to match the rest of the models I've done since. I wasn't expecting a perfect match with the newer stuff, but I think I've got close enough. I also think that I'll be switching to 32mm bases but I need to get hold of some more first and I'll do them together.

You could use black to hit the armor trim between the highlighted edges
It seems newer stuff is more dark with cleaner lines, old guys have that wispy dry-brushed look

First couple of refreshed marines are done, without stripping them and starting from scratch which I don't want to do I think this will do towards bringing them inline with the stuff I've been working on more recently. (And the second half of the squad that was left untouched for so long) I've gone for the 32mm base upgrade as opposed to the 25mm that I had put them on at some point in the past. These are not the way I would do these if I started them now and there are plenty of bits that I would do differently were I starting over.

The refreshed Marines look great on the new bases and the detailing makes each unique.

Afraid I cannot really see the Champion, camera was to close or something like that.

14-03-2017, 01:34
Thanks CB, yeah the depth of field isn't ideal for the champion, never fear - i will be adding nicer photos once the whole squad is complete, i need to take better photos of the latest sorcerer too.

01-04-2017, 19:08
I've been working away on the other half of the squad, these have all needed to be done from scratch, i have got them done barring backpacks here goes with a quick snap, i will add individual images once the squad is finished. I think that overall the squad looks pretty good altogether and that the difference between the original of the paint schemes isn't that noticeable.

Nice job, I'm enjoying following your thread

Started work on creating a Discord as inspired by the Word Bearers Trilogy, I will use it as a spawn, this is a fairly early days image, plan is too as pipes to the back, and then guitar string and chains hanging below, i am as yet undecided as to how i will do the front, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Further progress on the Discord:

Anyone got any opinions on the tentacles, all back or one forward?

11-04-2017, 21:44
It looks interesting, but I'm not 100% sure what a Discord is (Other than the one voiced by John de Lancie) so it's hard to give suggestions. But I do think that the tentacles all going backwards lends an air of aggression to the model, and also looks more natural and stable.

11-04-2017, 22:07
A Discord, one of the floating monstrosities that accompanied every slave gang, blessedly silent for a moment as the Chaos Marines had walked by, began once again to blare its cacophony of unintelligible words and hellish sounds from its grilled speaker unit. It hovered limply half a metre off the ground, dragging behind it an array of mechanical tentacles as it moved ponderously up and down the line of slaves.

That's the best description I've been able to find, taken from Dark Apostle by A. Reynolds if that helps.

11-04-2017, 22:22
Well, it looks the part at least. Some combat tentacles would not be amiss, or mechanicus type hands for killing things/keeping slaves in line.

11-04-2017, 22:39
Yeah, I am planning on adding various guitar strings, chains, and some of the barbed whips from the helstrider kit, I'll keep playing with it. It's been quite fun so far, it's built mostly out of a fantasy chaos knight, maulerfiend tentacles and a rhino hatch ring, funny what happens when you stop following the instructions.

14-04-2017, 20:05
That sounds like a plan. The current design is sweet but A shade too uniform. I think a greater number and variety of tentacles would address this nicely.

Does feel like it should be a little beefier than a spawn though (unless I'm misjudging the scale).
Have you considered running it as a hellbrute in a Helcult?

14-04-2017, 21:28
Nowhere near big enough to count as a helbrute I'd say the whole thing stands about as tall as a terminator with trophy racks, I'm away for the weekend but when i get back I'll try and get some scale photos.

I've already added a bit of asymmetry and spikyness, I'm thinking that i may need to rethink the helstrider whips as they are very flimsy.

15-04-2017, 06:50
Fair enough. Either way, I look forward to seeing the final product. :)

20-04-2017, 13:23
Further progress, i think i am approaching completion in terms of construction (primarily because it is getting tricky to attach any further tentacles to the rhino hatch that they are mounted to. I may do some more green stuff work here and there, anyone else got any suggestions before i go ahead and get this thing painted up?

Also included is a photo with a terminator for scale, it is a little bigger than I initially thought, but some of it's additional height is down to the white tack that is holding it to the base. Speaking of bases i haven't decided between the 40mm or the bike base, or should i track down some of the small ovals for this one? I like the width of the 40mm but i think that the length is better with the bike base...

Discord is coming along nicely. I loved that first word bearers book, the imperial slaves building the tower was such a great side plot and the image of the discords was very haunting. Good job.

25-04-2017, 11:23
Yeah, i really liked that aspect too and have long wanted to find a way of building some, even without an official in-game use for them. Although that leads me to want to think up some rules (not a lot of point with 8th ed round the corner) I'd think some kind of leadership penalty bubble, plus a make cultists fearless bubble, slow, move through cover, minimal offensive capability kind of thing.

Anyway I've popped some basecoats to get a feel for where I'm going, it is in two parts for the time being, but painting these tentacles is going to be a right pain in the proverbial.

Pretty much done with the Discord, here's some quick phone shots until I eventually get to my photography backlog.

the discord looks fantastic! :)

28-05-2017, 20:10
Well the Discord turned out rather well, good job

29-11-2017, 20:48
Gee, thanks photobucket...

Right I'm still working on this army, I'm not going to repost all the images from Photobucket, especially not the Wip shots. I will however relink completed images from my new host from this point onward.

I'm going to start with some HQ units:
Dark Apostle:
Chaos Terminator Lord:

29-11-2017, 22:16
More stuff, namely terminators:
(I realise this stuff has largely been shown before, but reposting it restores the blog)

29-11-2017, 22:17
Continuing with Helbrutes one is an almost stock Dark Vengeance model, the other is an Apostle Dreadnought converted from the blood Angels furioso kit

29-11-2017, 22:55
And some possessed:

29-11-2017, 22:59
And some troops,
First cultists, there are more as yet in photographed to this level:
And a squad of chaos marines, updated to match more current schemes, I may yet do this to my first squad.

29-11-2017, 23:05
Right, for something new:

Some lovely work here. Really like the subtle conversion of the cultists and great paint-job all round. Green backgrounds provide a nice contract.

Very impressed by the maulfiend. I am (very slowly) painting up a forgefiend and I'm not quite sure how to accentuate the daemonic nature of the machine. I like your use of runes and the blue glow of the exhaust ports. Might try using that if I ever get it finished . . .

Thanks Denny, I really should get around to photographing the other fifteen cultists...

As for the Maulerfiend I know what you mean about slowly painting them! It took me pretty much three months to paint the thing! That was working on it for about an hour or two most days from late June through to late September. I did it in pieces but left off the final highlights and runic details etc until I had put it all together. I'd quite like to do a forgefiend and perhaps another mauler at some point, but I have a few other things I'm working on first.

I'm currently finishing the painting on another sorcerer and the build of a Hellforged Predator using the Ectoplasma cannons from the fiend kit to make a plasma destroyer. When I get that done I'm going to finish the Rhino I never quite finished donkey's years ago. I've also got a half finished squad of chosen to finish, a need to do d suitable bits to make five more cultists and a half baked plan for some Khornate raptors using some Age of Sigmar parts to come up with a 40k incarnation of the Ashen Circle. - these are just the nose developed plans, others include another predator converted from the Baal Predator and some kind of Land Raider Redeemer using the chapter approved rules.

I'll get there eventually.
