I was reading a thread about Marine company organisation and I have just realised something. In all the Black Library books I've read involving Marines (Horus Heresy, Uriel Ventris and Ragnar Blackmane ones) there has never (as far as I can remember) been a mention of Marine bikes. Is this due to them being rarer than portrayed in the game, or are they frowned upon now as being a bit silly and less fitting with the gothic horror of the 40k background?

I'm interested to see if there are other books mentioning them and what everyone else thinks.

I've never seen them in a novel, either. Though I don't see why they would be silly, especially compared to anything Ork!

Aren't bikes usually used in scout or recon formations from the reserve companies? Uriel Ventris commands a full battle company doesn't he?
To be honest though, apart from Rhino's its rare to see any mention of most Space Marine vehicles. Even then, the Rhino's seem to be made of more than the damp tissue paper armour they have in the codex.

Actually there is at least one SM novel involving bikes: The angels of darkness, in it the protagonists rides on a bike for about two sentences to the town center to see whats wrong :)

There is plenty of artwork of Space Marines on standard bikes and on jet bikes in The Horus Heresy: Collected Visions.

Theyve appeared in a couple of books/short stories I remember, but outside of Inferno/Warhammer Monthly they dont appear in squads.

But then all vehicles*/bike/terminator/scout squads come from being attached from specialist companies in a codex chapter so id imagine theyre often rarer than 40k would suggest.

*Except Rhinos, which are Driven by SPOOKY GHOSTS!

In the Diary of a Chaos Space Marine they ride bikes. In fact one of the chaos marines has the idea of making Havoc Bikers (bikes with heavy weapons) he got shot by the commander for stupidity the funny thing is i thought it would have been a cool idea :(

but thats not really a novel

The more I think about it, the more the lack of bike prescence is probably due to the focus of the novels being the tactical companies as opposed to the reserves. However I still think bikes look silly and don't really fit with the Marine theme (except for the chapters dedicated to mobile warfare like the White Scars and specialised companies like the Ravenwing). There's something about them that is very biker culture and not too grim darkness gothic horror - especially the attack bikes with sidecars.

Also because as we all know, fighting from the back of a motorcycle other then perhaps the Attack Bikes is a silly way to fight. They don't have the height that Land Speeders and Jetbikes and jump/jet packs give you, and can't go where the infantry can go other then wide open plains.

Other then quick transport or to escort some APCs (where they can then disembark) riding around blazing inaccurately with boltguns just seems silly. Coolness factor though over rides this.:)

Marine Bikes are less "Hells Angels" than light tank squadrons really...

Light tank squadrons that don't have the range, armour, weapons or capability of a light tank :p

The image that just popped into my head was a marine on a regular bicycle that he "procured" from a little kid. Maybe one with streamers on the handlebars and a flowery basket to put his bolter in.

:D It is about three years since I read it, but IIRC he was strolling around in the carage eyeing what ride to take to the center. He passed the rhino, and took a bike. Riding ended, when suitably large mob of citizens was available to admire his awesomeness... No flower-basket though :D

IIRC, in the Space Wolves graphic novel, "Lone Wolves" the SW fight almost exclusively on bikes until their last stand/exacuation. It was pretty cool artwork, especially fighting the Carnivor/Tyrant/Big Bug.

It may have been a short story in a WD im not sure, but i remember a story of some White Scars charging some Ork CyBoar riders in the desert, the Space Marine Captain heads straight for the Ork Warboss, just before he reaches him he veers to one side, pulls a 'stoppie' (uses front brake very hard to bring rear wheel up) and swings the rear wheel round to hit the ork straight in the face, breaking its neck.

Pretty far fetched on a bike that must weigh close to 1.5 tons in total ;) but very cool nonetheless....

The Space Wolf Series at least covers them being loaded up on transports. Think it was the third book in the series.

That said fighting from the back of a motorcycle can be a really good way to fight. Would it necessarily act like they do in 40k probably not because the table is to small. Heights not always a good thing because it just allows more of your enemy to see you to be shot at.

I don't see why people think that they would be a bad idea. I presume that they would be used very similary to a heavy cavalry unit, smashing into and then through an enemy unit. All you need to do is poke your chainsword out sideways as you pass!:D

A horse can stay on its feet, as well as steering itself, as anyone here who rides a motorbike will tell you, the second you hit anything approaching human (or Ork) size you will come flying off, more than likely hurting yourself just as much as the thing you hit!

Bikes are great for specific roles - dispatch riders and reconaissance etc, a mobile fighting platform they are not, and a CC platform they are most definitly not!

However, the rule of cool obviously comes first, but hey, thats cool with me! :)

Space Marine bikes are BIG. Don't forget that. Big and, most likely, heavy. I doubt that hitting a person would slow them down much. Hitting an Ork, could, but a person, nah.

If you actually look at the scale (and GW minis aren't the best for being realistic), when you consider a space marine is about seven feet tall the wheel is about five feet across and the front is about six feet off the ground. They are easily the size of a real life van.

In the book Warrior Coven , The Deathwatch team rolls out of their "ugly" ship on their "ugly and loud" bikes when they arrive on the Eldar Craftworld

That is so disturbing it's not even funny.

Don't be silly, those don't even exist in the fluff.

EDIT: Sarcasm there, sorry. Should have been clearer.

Yeah, but with streamers? And a basket? It's wrong. It's heresy! Burn him! :skull:

Besides, the bike would have to be made of tenfold reinforced adamantium or some such jargon-nonsense.

The funny thing about scout bikers is that they're probably THE least commonly seen SM unit (on the tabletop, in fiction, or in artwork) and yet are the ONLY use of Marine bikes that's even remotely realistic... reconnaissance is the only useful role for motorbikes on the battlefield. Go figure.

I do seem to recall a short story of a black and white space marine on a black and white bike...

But otherwise, can't think of anything.

I actually thought it would be cool to have a unit of IG on bicycles, a bit like Japanese forces from the WWII.

They would fleet of pedals...

Interesting concept IMHO

Sorry for Offtop...

As to marine on a bibcycle...
