View Full Version : Have you ever donated to someone else's army?

11-11-2007, 21:08
I'm making this post in order to know if any of you ever donated money to support anybody else's army. If you did it, how much you donated in cash or models?

I've gave someone a mega paint set i didn't need.

Does that count?:D

11-11-2007, 21:09
a friend donated me an ork head, i needed it for my trophy rack

11-11-2007, 21:11
A friend donated me a plasma gun and several wolf heads.

11-11-2007, 21:11
I do a lot of internet trading and lot buying on Ebay, so I sometimes end up with some random odds and ends. I sometimes donate those to my friends' armies, especially if they are starting a new one. I guess the largest donation I've ever made was an old style carnifex, two old style lictors, and a bunch of old style gaunts. A friend kept saying that he wanted to start a tyranid army, so I gave him those to get him moving.

Later I mentioned that I was thinking of starting a Sisters of Battle army, and a different friend gave me a box of the basic Sisters and a box of Seraphims. Years later my SoB army still consists of only those two boxes.

i donated some fire warriors i had found to a friends army. he no longer uses them, but at least i could help him before.

11-11-2007, 21:18
i gave a mate 20 cadian shock troops.

11-11-2007, 21:20
I donated an 1850pt army to my cousin, have donated various bits and bobs to the masses, and mask donations as birthday gifts that everyone knows I shouldn't be giving.

11-11-2007, 21:25
I've never really donated things, but I once gave a friend of mine a Christmas gift of a Catachan Veteran Sargeant. I took time to recut and Green Stuff the guy so he looks like he's cleaning his sword after having cut off an ork's head...which is mounted on the base in such a way that the guardsman has his foot propped up on it.

Then There's the FW stuff I got for my friend last Chirstmas....the FW Command Squad and an inquisitor Lok.

11-11-2007, 21:27
I've donated and traded with friends. Back in 2nd i swapped all my nidz for more marines. In 3rd i gave a friend my spare ork stuff (ork player) when i was trying to get rid of miscellaneous junk that i didn't actually play. I don't just go around shouting 'merry xmas' and giving out free stuff at random, though. =)

11-11-2007, 21:29

a friend of mine got in touch with an old buddy of his and we got about 2k of guard and 1.5k of nurgle stuff... that was a big donation. i donated a bunch of my time to help paint said models and now they look great and we have like 8 armies between the two of us.

the same friend has helped me out so much its a joke. he's donated an old armorcast superheavy (which i converted into a nightwing) a few older MK marines for my veteran squad, an old chaplain, and a bunch more.

life is so much easier when we help eachother out :)

11-11-2007, 21:30
I let my friend borrow a paintbrush (which, due to losing contact, I never got back) and gave him some flock. Aren't I an altruistic git?

11-11-2007, 21:34
I'd like to give a special mention to everyone in my sig.

11-11-2007, 21:35
I gave someone a bunch of lasguns for his army (some sort of cultists army).

Someone, when I said I bought a techmarine for my army, said "I'll have it, since I'm actually making a space marines army." Serious, not sarcy.

11-11-2007, 21:49
Maybe that time when I got a GW Exorcist, and years later, I'm the proud owner of a 3000 pts in SoB. Thanks to my best friend, Joćo.

11-11-2007, 21:51
Cool :) i'm intending to create a blog that shows my painting work and my army's fluff. People who like it may donate via paypal, if they desire.

11-11-2007, 21:56
I'd like to give a special mention to everyone in my sig.

How is the Thunderhawk coming on? I haven't seen that thread for a while; did it pop back up and I missed it?

11-11-2007, 21:57

11-11-2007, 22:01
I've donated to friends and acquintances:

5 Cadian rough riders converted to ride Cold Ones

3 Leman Russ Battle Tanks

1 Chimera

10 Steel Legion Gaurdsmen

2 Aspiring Champions

1 Firewarrior with Railgun

1 Battleforce force of Tyranids

1 Converted Howling Griffon Librarian

and a bunch of stuff I've forgotten. I usually get large amounts of bits from ebay, mod some stuff up and paint for practice, and then generally give away stuff I can't use. This has become more prolific since I decided to focus solely on my Orks, Necrons, and Eldar forces.

11-11-2007, 22:28
I have bought and painted several miniatures for my friends and I regulary donate bitz.

11-11-2007, 22:40
I've donated loads of stuff from my bits box. I've even painted a mates army for him. Likewise, I've crashed a mate smokes cause his wife said he could by GW stuff or smokes and he opted for the models.

11-11-2007, 22:45
I "donate" tank models to my brother whenever I make huge stuff-ups in the constrution process.

He plays Orks, so he wins doubly that way.

11-11-2007, 23:18
hey - if you've donated something before give yourself a pat on the back. in the spirit of this i am donating 2 old cloaked dark angels to my friend today to get him motivated to finish up the other models he just had donated from another friend! i forgot about those!

win, win baby

M1A2 Commander
11-11-2007, 23:45
Our group raids each others bitz boxes for goodies all the time. I gave my nepahew some old metal IG infantry and a couple Leman Russ tanks. He's got a full army now and I'm helping him paint it. I'm gonna have a Baneblade for him for X-mas. :D

11-11-2007, 23:48
Lots of bits, and a couple of random dwarf lords I got as unwanted extras in a mail order.

Son of Russ
12-11-2007, 00:39
I'm donating two ork Gorkamorka trukks, a wreaking Ball trukk, a rocket launcker trukk, a Harpoon track and rocket buggy along with two Mechs, three yoofs one Runtherd and 4 grots with misc plastic orks to a mate to rebuild his ork horde.

12-11-2007, 00:45
One time I played in a mega battle and won a box of Dire Avengers and a Support Weapon platform. I had no use for them at the time, so I gave them to a guy who had just started an Eldar army. All he had was a battleforce, so that gave him some nice additions.

I've also given my girlfriend my whole Tau army.

12-11-2007, 01:09
I've donated tons of bitz to our gaming group, I've donated an entire cities of death box of painted building to my game club to use I have donated Dark Angel forgeworld symbols to our game group. Oh and i bought a buddy who was broke 7 paints when he was out. Our gameing group even has bitz swap day so this kinda thing is common.

I <3 W
12-11-2007, 01:13
my m8 gave me a monolith, then he decided it was his and now he wants me to buy it from him so I'm a bit pissed. I've given him some dark angels. He'll probably give me the monolith eventually, though.

Yes i like to help out new players. ive given some old genstealers to a kid for his nid army and gave another some marines. I think thats it.

12-11-2007, 01:30
Gave a tactical squad to a friend who had one of his stolen.

I got scammed in a trade for 24fire wariors, 3 broadsides, 6 old stealthsuits and 5 crisis suits.
Does that count?

12-11-2007, 01:53
I gave away the Dark Eldar stuff from the Old Starter to 2 different people.

I've also given away stuff from a Strange Ebay bits purchase that contained stuff from several armies.

12-11-2007, 02:08
I donated a a few space marines and an iron priest to a friend back in 2000. He painted them and they looked really sweet the last time i saw them. But not sure about now I havent seen them in awhile.

Hrogoff the Destructor
12-11-2007, 02:15
I once bought a friend an ork trukk with ten boyz. His army was lacking, and he needed more money to make it more effective (the outdated ork codex didn't make it any easier).

I also bought a friend a tau codex.

I could use that money now, now that I live on my own.

12-11-2007, 02:18
I gave a buddy my 3500 point Dark Angel army when I went off to law school. Didn't think I was gonna be playing anymore. Silly bastard went and painted them all black so he could be Black Templars. Now that BT actually have a codex, he complains because he can't use devastator squads.

My Vostroyan force is a vast collection of models received via trades and as gifts (much thanks to Warseer!). It contains models sent to me from at least 6 states and countries which include: England, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Australia and Canada.

When I first came into the hobby, I got quite a few things from the friend who introduced me. Over the years, when I help introduce others, I try to help them out as well.

12-11-2007, 02:56
I bought my friend a box of Chaos Marines, Khorne Berzerkers, a Defiler, and Kharn the Betrayer for his birthday when I thought he'd get into 40k. 2 years later, the Defiler, Kharn, and 2 'Zerkers are all that's constructed and painted.

12-11-2007, 03:01
ive given a guy a gene stealer that i found, ive also just given away tons of bits, i like to keep my bits, but id rather see someone whos needs it put it to good use, then it just sitting in my box for an indefinate period of time

Grand Warlord
12-11-2007, 03:21
Yeah when the tournaments that me and my 'group' go to, if someone needs some assistance finishing the army (however that may be financially) I would loan some cash ... but I get it back ... or i send out the lawn gnome mafia.

12-11-2007, 04:43
I have given my godson's brothers an 2k orc/gobbo army so he would have an opponent. gave a bunck of necrons to one of the kids at my church so he could use them to pummel me. paid for the scenery for the church wargames group (supplies for homemade stuff, COD, and armorcast) to the tune of about $500. Regularly give bits to the kids.

Have 2 loaner armies for new kids to borrow.

still looking for a cheap wind host boxset for the eldar loaner - that will bring it upto about 5K and let me split it into 2 loaner armies.

12-11-2007, 05:09
I've been on the receiving end from a very good friend. Tau Hammerhead, Tau Devilfish, some Storm Troopers, some beakies...All of it put to good use...

12-11-2007, 05:14
A friend donated me some spare bits, thats bout it (I think.)

12-11-2007, 05:45
I've donated a total of 60 terminators to the armies of various people along with roughly 80 power armored marines, 2 land raiders, 1500pts of Tau, 2000pts of Eldar, 2000pts of Dark Angels, and two trashbags full of assorted bitz. I'm not counting character models that I've converted up for people because those number in the dozens now.

Yeah...I get bored with armies quickly and I tend to just give them away after a few games...all my armies except my Inquisitorial riff-raff and my marines have gotten the chopping block within 3 weeks of their purchase.

I gave someone at my old club a bunch of Fantasy High Elves that I'd never done anything with other than paint (to a nice standard, to be fair). Whenever I trade, I also send out extra bits or models or whatever as I feel stupid trying to trade "Marine Head #1" or "Left Rending Claw" when I can just give them away in hopes that they'll come to good use. Lots of folks have hooked me up, so I like the idea of paying it forward.

12-11-2007, 07:12
How is the Thunderhawk coming on? I haven't seen that thread for a while; did it pop back up and I missed it?

No, it's been dormant for a while. The lads have been getting on fine with the model, but it's all been drybrushing the highlights, which I must say look great, but hardly show up on photos, so I haven't updated.

12-11-2007, 07:33
A friend gave me an old space marine model last year, with one of those very old rocket launchers.

12-11-2007, 07:46
I gave my brother the space wolf rune priest as a rooze to get him to start collecting again and as I expected that one seed grew into a 3000point army and now hes onto guard. I also gave him a bunch of weapons and chainswords coz i really didnt like looking at old style plasma pistols and hand flamers etc.

12-11-2007, 11:50
Not money per se, but I won a 1000 point army from GW once and got a firend 1K points of Tau to get him started. And I've won gift certificates from tourneys that I gave to the last place finsher.

12-11-2007, 12:01
A young lad in our local GW without alot of money to his name greatfully received 2ks worth of space wolfs from me. Not only has he now painted them all up himself but is enjoying playing with them

They were only collecting dust in my cupboard and its nice to see figures used!

Danny boy

12-11-2007, 12:41
gave someone 2000 points of tomb kings I would never get around to painting.

12-11-2007, 16:00
Ive been given close to 3000 pts Goblins for warhammer fantasy and abour 1500 pts Orks for 40.. friend of mine was lacking interest.. told him to keep the goblins and that I would paint them for him instead, took the 40k Orks tho, and am painting them atm while waiting for the new ork codex..

I myself have donated several guard to a friend of mine and allso 1500 pts Fantasy Empire, but he only gets what he paints.. =)

12-11-2007, 16:09
besides the endless exchange of bitz...

twice a year, our club has a charity tournament, in which the younger players with incomplete armies, pick a "hitter". he older guys that they pick go into a tournament and the rest of the club pitches in $5 and bets on who's going to win. the kid who's hitter won gets the $ and if your bet wins the thing, you get 1/2 off the next club tournament entry fee.

we've done it several times and it really helps the kids who are very enthusiastic but are on a small or sometimes no allowance and have to wait for birthdays and christmas...

12-11-2007, 16:15
I like to give minatures to a friend of mine - gave him an ancient metal Cadian I had lying around when he told me he was short of an IG sargent, and last year I gave him a couple of marine veterans for his birthday. It was a suprise present, I based them and painted them to 'display standard' (well as close as I get to it, anyway) to fit with his Blood Angels army. There was a little self-interest involved - I like the look of those vets, and really wanted a chance to paint them, but they'd be no use for my armies.

He's donated me bits and pieces when I need them, most recently some marine captain and sargent heads to help me give my Chaos Terminators the look I was after.

12-11-2007, 17:22
... does sending someone something in trade and never getting your items in return constitute "donating to someone else's army?" If so... chalk me up for that, as well.

12-11-2007, 17:32
I scavenged about 5 berzerkers, a chaos termie arm, and a load of space marine and WFB chaos bits when i was starting CSM, and a mate gave me 20 guardsman for my birthday that he didn't need. However, I've only donated a few bits a friend needed for a conversion.

12-11-2007, 17:32
Maybe that time when I got a GW Exorcist, and years later, I'm the proud owner of a 3000 pts in SoB. Thanks to my best friend, Joćo.

In nearly nineteen years of tortured existence, out of dozens of people with that same name, I've only met one close to being a decent person.:p Not on topic but whatever...

12-11-2007, 17:33
I have pretty much donated an eldar army to a friend and a marine army to another.
A buddy of mine donated a rogue trader land raider to me.

12-11-2007, 17:36
During my time in the hobby I've given away the core of a Space Ork army and a High Elf army as well as a few odds and ends and an Apocalypse Gamer's Edition to a friend who has given me and my son hundreds of dollars worth of product over the years.

12-11-2007, 17:39
Ahh forgot, an undead army to a buddy as well.

12-11-2007, 19:39
I gave a new kid starting out 20 terminators. They were the plastic ones with the 360 swivel waist. I was happy to get rid of them actually though probably not as excited as the kid recieving them. I have given away squads of marines, codexes etc to newbies trying to start out. It is a very expensive hobby so I help out when I can.

Swiftsword Bonaparte
14-11-2007, 21:37
I have given to (or bought for) my brother 2 Necron Heavy Destroyers, 10 Pariahs, 5 Immortals, 2 Wraiths, 1 box of Dark Eldar Warriors, along with creating for him several home-made things, including 2 Nightbringers, 2 Pylons, and 2 monoliths.

14-11-2007, 22:03
At SWCHQ last christmas I gave out a pile of bits for 10 SM scout snipers and I contributed into a SWC DA Killteam with a medic:
I just supplied the model, the painting was done by another member.

14-11-2007, 22:16
i've donated alot of painting timw in past. and still do on occasion. Ithink as far as models go I gave a kid ten mairnes with paint jobs so thick I couldn't save them.

14-11-2007, 22:43
When I first started playing it was against my fiances cousin and he only had 750 points. Since I was tired of playing the same list and knew he couldn't afford it I got him a hammerhead and etheral.

A year later he quit the game...

15-11-2007, 02:49
I always swap bits with mates to get what I want. However, a buddy who was leaving the hobby gave me his entire ork army, and gave his fantasy chaos army to the group.

15-11-2007, 03:07
i give around a few bitz around my local GW

15-11-2007, 08:14
My old mate who is emigrating to Aus fairly imminently has just given me his box of RTB01 marines + original vincent black shadow and a pair of Contemptor class dreadnoughts

My Best man gave me a bunch of spare stealers from his space hulk sets to form the core of my genestealer division

top blokes the pair of them

15-11-2007, 08:28
I have always passed around spare bits... including whole models. I have also been given loads of things in the past including whole regiments and squads, in both cases the guys where changing army and I had supplied them with parts for conversions etc.

I have always said what goes around comes around. if I have spare stuff that Im not going to use someone else might as well make a cool model out of it!!

15-11-2007, 08:47
Back in mid 3rd ed, a mate wanted to try chaos, but wasn't too keen on some of the models (raptors, mainly). I converted up some out of berzerkers, and used a pile of bits wings from eldar BFG ships (they were 'escorts' of some kind). I didn't even charge him for them. He loved my conversions, and promptly attempted to thrash me with them.

I taught him some tactics that day - Launching the squad (10) of raptors at my (in cover) Dark Reapers. His charge fell short by three inches (and the reapers obliterated them in the following turn with a cry of 'pull!'). On his way home from the game, he fell asleep on the train and lost his army (around $600 AUD at the time).
