Okay, if your general is a daemon, do warhounds count as anything? Or do I have to tag them as special?

Well, I would say they are special in that case. IIRC they are listed under mortal units in hordes of chaos and under beast units in beast of chaos. Either way, they're not core.

Chaos Warhounds are available as Core units in Mortal and Beast armies, and as Special in Daemonic armies.

I would just add that the Hounds don't take a Core slot when your General is a Mortal or a Beast (so, no, you can't have your 3 cores for 90 points in a 2K game), but they still take Special slots when your General is a Daemon ... that last line in the army list entry is often overlooked.
