Anyone else here think that Eldar are too cheap?

I was playing them today and during the game attcked an Avatar with 3 squads of SM's, 20 Conscripts and SW squads (it was a mixed force.)

I only succeded in taking 3 wounds off it with the loss of most of my men.

They seem to be able to stand up to just about any punishment that I throw against them, even my opponent admitted that he felt they were undercosted but hoped that it would stay that way as he likes to win. (Can you blame him?)

So what are your thoughs?

Are Eldar too cheap?

Well it's not exactly a fair fight. Change your force to a single squad of Autocannon Havocs with a Power Fist, or a triple Plasma Gun Veteran squad, or Possessed Marines with Rending and suddenly things look a lot more balanced.

He's designed to mow down whatever men you stick under his blade, and he does indeed do his job well.

funny 'cus it should be the other way around for some eldar units...

A single blood claw unit can actually kill an avatar 1v1.

Eldar actually pay a premium for their abilities as they are specialists, the only undercosted unit I would think of is dire avengers - but they are troops thus them being cheap isn't unique to eldar.

A pack of kitted up Blood Claws should beat the avatar like an old rug. More so if he charges you- then you counter-attack him with powerfists and a mountain of return attacks.:D

Interesting though... Eldar in dawn of war also experience the same problem. Eldar themself is a strange race, used effectively and they become a ruthless unstoppable force so much so that they appeared overpowered in one way or another. Truth is they pay a premium for special abilities too look powerful and their cost to ability ratio is balanced. The only thing which MAY be undercost is their cheap shriuken cannon upgrades. I love them, you pay between 5 to 15 points to get 3 s6 shots at 24'.

I don't think that your example is very good (unless it was very small squads of marines and you charged in piecemeal, if that is the case then you deserved what you got).

Eldar has pretty expensive models that is very specialised, so the entire army will have to work together for it to work. Then comes the fact that they die like flies when you start throwing things at them.

So, no, I don't think that eldar is undercosted

I dont think they are. They do still have to pay quite a bit for their units which are still only T3.

Like most armies, the Eldar have on paper undercosted units, but also overpriced once...

Underpriced- Harliquins, Falcons, Firedragons, Wraithlords

Overpirced - Shinning Spears (still!!), Warlocks, Swooping Hawks

Eldar are incredibly powerful when each unit is played against their optimum opponent. Therefore they may seem undercosted. If however they are played against the wrong opponent then they will seem overcosted. For example, a squad of fire dragons that spends every turn of the game shooting tanks will seem undercosted but the same unit versus hordes of gaunts will be seen as overcosted. This is the opposite of marines where every unit will seem ok no matter what happens.

Perfect explanation!!! Nice illustration of FireDragons usage, SwoopingHawks arn't overcost! They are undercost against GEQ and perform versatile roles on the field. Shining Spears are expensive for a reason, they are devestating on a charge and have nice 3+ saves not to mention the extra movements.
