View Full Version : Snakes of Ithaka - Iron Sakes Marines

This was supposed to be the first squad of a crusade army but I'm strating to think (depending on peoples reactions to them) I might do the whole army in IS colours.

They're far from display quality but I wasable to knock out the squad in under a day (and when I've got almost 100 more marine to paint that's a big plus!)

I opted to deviate from the official colour scheme by not makingthe chapter icon blue. I'm not sure if you agree (please let me know!) but I figured with the predominant use of white, red and silver already, it didn't really need a coloured icon.

I'm posting to hopefully get some help with the bases. When I modelled them I was planning on doing them in urban rubble/wreckage with some small pacthes of snow to brighten things up, but I'm not sure if now the grey/white of the abse will compliment the modelsm or blend too much with them. Maybe a wet brown muddy colour with some patches of dead static grass and mud weathered up the greaves? any other/better suggestions?

They look good, I agree with you on the bases, they make the models look a bit dark. you could try to minimise the weathering on the marines so they still look clean.

U could make the dirt a light colour.
EDIT: Lovely models BTW, but i don't really agree with u on the black snakes. I just think they should be canonical.

I like the scheme. I think it looks good.

I'd probably avoid an urban theme with the bases, as I think you are right; it would not compliment the models well. A brown soil with scattered clumps of green static grass should look nice. The green grass will contrast well with the red on the models and make them stand out.

Very nice, although I'd personally go for a slightly more blue steel look. Shouldn't they have an apothecary in there somewhere?

Oh man thats priceless, consider it sigged. Those iron snakes look good, I thought about painting a couple up for a long while after reading the book. I would consider doing the bases in a lighter shade with some green static grass to really make them pop. Cant wait to see some more pics when they are fully finished.

Thanks guys. I'm going to have a stab at the bases today and post the results later.

Shouldn't they have an apothecary in there somewhere?
Technically ye, each IS squad has it's own apothacary, but as, with the traists system, it's a choice between a vet sergeant and an apothacary I opted for the vet, as it seems these are more essential to the feel of the squad than the apothacary (who could be off with the other half of the squad somewhere else)

What colours did you use for the white

spacewolf grey then skull white. It took 3 oats of space wold grey to get a decent base though. I probably should have started with shadow grey or fenri gey then put on a space wolf grey base. then it took about 4 oas of skull white and finally a glaze of skull white:water:glaze medium (1:12:4) to give it the smoothness

Thanks

Time for an update. After some experimentation, I kind of went with every idea. There was originaly static grass on there but it didn't look right do I went for a colder look and added the snow to add some brightness. I also modified the crappy number on the right shoulder pad to be a block of colour and a band of parchment with the squad name on as per canonical Iron Snakes.

They are proving increasingly difficultt o photgraph. Might be time to build a lightbox afterall.

I'm pretty much sold on doing the IS as the whole army so for my own reference (and anyone else who's interested) this is the various recipes:

Armour:
- basecoat P3 pig iron
- Drybrush boltgun metal
- Highlight/blend boltgun metal:mithril silver 1:1
- extreme highlight mithrilsilver
- wash with Tamiya Smoke

Chest Eagles:
- basecoat bestial brown
- highlight P3 Brass balls
- wash with chestnut ink

White:
- basecoat Fenris Grey
- basecoat space wolf grey
- 3 -4 coats of sull wjite
- glaze skull white:water:glaze medium 1:12:4

Base:
- basecoat shadow grey:dark flesh 3:1
- add bleached bone to base mix and drybrush
- drybrush with bleached bone

thanks

awesome! Im jealous... I love the hoods on the sergeants!
remember that the snakes are spartan themed so maybe add some combat shields...

also wanted to do a iron snakes kill team after i read abnett's new book but I got way to many marine armies anyways, so maybe in the future
keep up the good work and show us more

These are all looking incredible, first decent Iron Snakes I've seen. And another plus, they're painted. You mentioned the last step in the armor is "Tamiya Smoke" what is that?

Corai
01-12-2007, 11:52
Thanks guys :D

Tamiya smoke is an alchohol based paint/ink/effect thingy that is made by the japanese company Tamiya. It works fantastically when applied as a glaze over metals to make them look a bit more realistic, or grimey, or oily (depending on how you dilute the smoke).

Dev squad 1 coming up later today

My veterans/notable squads will be replete with them ;)

plan for the army is

Vet Squad/ Notables
Assault squad

It only takes me a day to knock out a basic squad to this standard so hopefully I should be on to the notables before too long where I intend to convert each model and spend a lot more time on them!

Be sure to give only the sgt a Lightning Claw it is thier badge of office.
And also a spear(sealance) on all thier backs would not be off.

The lightning claw is Priam's badge of office (can't remember the squad name off the top of my head, it might be damocles, might not though...). Each squad has a differant relic the sergeant carries which connects him to the past. In my notable squads, the vet sgt will be replaced with an apothacary so one of the models will carry a power weapon/fist, be bgareheaded and have a backbanner to identify them as the squads sergeant, if only in fluff!

I don't think the IS are actually organised into companies, instead being more squad-centric. I could be wrong though, I don't think there are any conclusive writings at this stage.

I love it. I've gone through about 6 over the course of this project to get enough mesh fencing and full base resin pieces but now I've got enough additional resin bits to base several armies to come!

Update Time

After spending another 6 or so hours painting this afternoon I've finished another Dev Squad. again, not the best quality but I am actually getting through this army. After over 10 years of gaming and 6 previous attemps, this is the closest I've ever come to a fully painted Marine army and I don't intend to give up now.

I'm hoping to get the army painted completely before the new year and hopefully this wil be possible if I continue at this pace (allowing mroe time for doing a better job on my notable squads than I have on the rest of the grunt units).

So, enough waffling, time for the pics:

Nest unit is another batch of missile launcher devs. I've got them rimed and am base coating the metal as I type(well obviously that's impossible, more in between keys ;)). Next Tuesday Wednesay (my next 2 days off) I'm planning to get the 8 man assault squad painted, 4 men one day, 4 the next. then over the week I'm off at xmas, in between all the festivities I may be able to get the rest of the army painted.

Also, I can't help but notice that there are Mk4 heads but no torsos. Were they used elsewhere?

I tried to post this yesterday but have only just been able to get back onto Warseer. Not sure if they had a problem or whether it was just me!

Another day, another devastator squad. This unit went a little heavy on the Tamiyua Smoke so they're a little more oily and shiney then the others, but it's nothing that a balst of Dullcote (that the entire army will get when finished) won't clear up.

This unit marks the end of the 6 man line trooper squads I've got to paint. Next up is a unit of 8 assualt marines and then the notable veteran squads

A few people have asked how I painted the pwoer sord so I'll put the method up on here too:

-undercoat chaos black
-basecoat mordian blue
-re-basecoat enchented blue leaving the thinnest amount of mordian blue where the hilt meets the blade for a bit of definition
-paint the top 75% of the blade with enchanted blue:ice blue 1:1. Blend edges of this down
-paint top 50% of blade ice blue. Blend edges down for smooth gradient
-paint top 25% of blade ice blue:skull white 1:1. Blend down
-paint very tip of blade skull white.
-carefully draw out a zig zag line in white down the blade. At each zig or zag paint a line going in the opposite direction to make the lightning effect
-glaze blade in blue ink:water:glaze medium 1:8:4
-paint tip of blade skull white again.
-paint the interesctions between the lightnihgt bolts in skull white

Next up is a squad of notables/veterans with ccw and bolt pistols. I actually got these undercoated during daylight yesterday so will start work on them during the evenings this week.

I love the silver effect you've achieved on your Iron Snakes Corai. Whats your recipe?

The silver is:

-undercoat chaos black
-basecoat with P3 pig iron (the trick here is not to shake the bottle and mix it, instead using the slightly darker metal colour you'l lget without mixing the paint properly
-drybrush with boltgun metal
-highlight/blend boltgun metal:Mithril Silver 1:1
-extreme highlight mithril silver
-wash with Tamiya Smoke:water:glaze medium 3:1:2

I've found it works better over larger flatter areas like the chestplates without eagles, or the latest sergeant combat shield

I remember seeing Iron Snakes in some ancient GW tome, including a really badly painted one in one of the first purchaseable GW catalogs (a few years back), and I thought it was a horrible color scheme...

You've changed my mind. They look fantastic! Although I'm still a little iffy on the logo; the "omega"-style snake seems like the weak point to me, but otherwise, the white & red details over the really great "steel" coloring is fabulous...

Yeah, I double checked, it's the 2004-2005 catalog; in the section where they devote like six pages to marine chapters & color schemes, there's an archaic beakie metal marine done up as an Iron Snake. They must've dug it up out of a box somewhere, because the model was a horrible old mold, and the paint job they did on it was obviously not up to 'eavy Metal snuff. :)

For reference, the Iron Snakes also show up in Insignium Astartes, where there's a note that the company number is displayed on the left kneepad (which is painted white). The logo there is more "loopy" -- it looks a bit more like a pretzel, where the head and tail curl back in to "touch" and create closed loops.

Thanks for the Info. I'll have to see if I can find someone with a copy of Insignum astartes to take a look at. It looks like, from the information in Abnetts book that (at least his interpretation of the Iron Snakes) don't seem to operate in companies, at least not anymore.

Thanks, I've tried so many m,arine armies over the eyars and am really glad to have found one I can stand to paint an entire army of. (and it's excellant...I think ;))

Also, how did you get that blue effect on the power sword? what paint mix?.

If you look further up the thread, the colours for the powersword are in an earlier post

and is there going to be a full armie pic at the end

Hopefully! When the full 1500 points is painted I'll take it all down to the local club and try to snap some pics on one of the scenic terrain boards (I'd struggle to fit the entire army on my box'o'plasticard I use as a photograph back drop right now ;)

I've been thinking of expanding the army recently. I'm happy with the 1500 point list but really want to paint up some more (varied!) marine stuff to give me some options, so I'm thinking after the initial 1500 points I'd be looking to expand the army with the following:

-Commander - a chance to really push the greek theme, possibly converted from another master of the chapter, but possibly sculpted from scratch, complete with hoplite shield and sealance/power spear

-chaplain - converted from the master of the chapter that is striding forward with a bolter help in front of his chest (will of course be swapped for a pistol). I'mthinking I'll magnetize the mdoel so I can add a jumppack. Or I might just add a jump pack anyway as it's such a tempting option

-Terminators - a 6 man squad of regular termies (toting two assault cannons of course ;) representing Skypio squad (the only Iron Snakes squad to use TDA in the chapter). I'm thiking really go to town with togas/chitons here.

-3 landspeeder tornados - I want to add some vehicles ot the army but don't really like the look of marine tanks sothese were a natural

-2 dreadnoughts. I'd struggle to fit these in a list becasue I think I'm always going to want to include at least one notable squad for fluff reasons...but it seems to me dreadnoughts always work best in pairs. I'd ike to get the forgeworld Mk IV/pre heresy dread for these guys, those models are just too nice to pass up.

That's give me a fair bit of varied stuff to paint for the meantime but does anyone have any other suggestions to give me plenty of options for fielding the army (as said though, I'm not interested in including marine tanks as I just don't like the look of them, and the diea of diversifying the army like this is primarily just to give me more interesting stuff to paint ;))

as far as I know (I got this from somone on the Black Library boardS) there are no combat active scouts in the chapter. All the scout equivolents are trained on Kaybdis and Ithaka and don't actualy see real combat until they join up with a squad

I've posted a possible alternate army list which should contain some more stuff to paint:

I think I'd need to paint a handful of alternate veterans, a command squad, a termi squad and 5 drop pods.

Update time again. I've not had chance to get much painting done over the festive period. That combined with all the extra gubbinz I stuck on these guys have protracted the painting somewhat. I've been working on my first notable/veteran squad for the past 3 days (although to be fair, not too many hours on each day, I just had a lot of other stuff on too). The unit's missing it's 6th member and sergeant, the apothecary. I've been putting off painting it until I have the second vet unit done and can do both docs, and all that white armour in one go.

So, on to Notable Thebes, pride of Ithaka.

Update time again. I managed to sue my last day before returning to work after some xmas time off to knock out the better part of the 2nd veteran squad. the squad's apothecary is still outstanding but until then, Notable Parthus is done:

A little progress done on the Apothecaries, but no pics. The Doctors are in

or

Take Two of These and Call me in the Morning

I couldn't decide on the title of the post so have instead opted for both ;)

I finished up my apothecaries today. I'm not all that pleased with how they turned out (and am eternaly grateful I chose a metalic coloured marine army rather than a white one (!)) but they fit in well enough with the other moels.

Pis aren't great as I knocked over one of my daylight lamps and blew the bulb (incidentally, does anyone know a UK suplier of daylight/craft/UV filtered halogen bulbs?) so I had to put a regular yellow bulb in to replace it. I wanted to get a pic of the docs with their respective squads but alas, my lighting woes had the pics tun out pretty dismally.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/doc2.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/doc1.jpg

I kept the apothecary symbol black on the shoudler pad rather than the traditional red to tie them in more with the rest of the army.

So the first phase of my Iron Snakes army is almsot done (what I have titled 'Project:Paint a dman 1500 point army already') and for no reason other than my own amusement I have prepared the following to do list:

Librarian
Veteran Squad with Boltguns
Veteran squad with ccw and bolt pistols
tac squad
tac squad
dev squad with missile launchers
dev squad with missile launchers
dev squad with heavy bolters
assault squad

Tomorrow I start work on the Libby. After that I have the second phase of the ary to work on, the drop pod assualt titled 'Project: Iron Rain' (on account of the raindrop shaped drop pods and their tendancy to fall from the sky). To complete the Iron Rain army I need to assemble and paint the following

Terminator Librarian
4 Terminators (1 serg, 2 assault cannons)
4 Veterans with boltguns and ccw
8 tac marines with bolters
2 tac marines with metlaguns
5 drop pods
dreadnought with missile launcher and lascannons
venerable dreadnought with missile launcher and assault cannon

Wow, Cor, I've said it before, and I'll say it again: awsome looking squads.

I especially love the white-red-black color scheme.

I don't know anything about 40K fluff (you know it), so cannot really say anything about faithfullness of the minis with the chapter fluff, but what matters is that the army has a very cohesive look and will look astonishing on a battlefield.

Are you planning any superheavies?
What ever happened to the Titan? are you going to use it for the snakes?

cheers

Edit: the only thing I am not convinced about is the lance: these look too Fantasy-sh... how about a lance pretty much like Scibor's, done with a bolter put upside down, and some wires?

The titan is definatly going to join in with the snakes. Once I've got the hang of painting the scheme on some larer models (like the tanks and drop pods) I'm planning to finally give that thing a ick of paint.

As for the lances, I've not seen the scibor ones in question but they sound like the custodian guard style bolter/halberd deals. Those things look awesome, but are also supposed to be pretty rare in the 40K universe, plus the sea lances are dexcribed as being pretty simplistic, just a shaft and blade IIRC in Abnett's book so I tried to keep it pretty simple

Painting update:
The librarian's face, armour and robes are now painted. Still to do are the shoulder pad rims, the purity seals, the gold edging/chest eagle, the large book, the force sword and the base (takes about an hour incuding drying time just to do the bases on these guys!)

For the force sword, I was planning on painting it in the same style as my power weapons but am not sure if it should be distinguished in some way (particularly as the libby is painted in primarily blue and white already). I'm thinking of either doing the blue fade as normal but having white runes running down the centre of the blade instead of lightning, or doing the fade and lightning effect but in a differant colour. Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Well it's 2.39 in the morning here and I have work at 8.30. However, I have finished the librarian and can finally say, after over 10 years in the hobby, and over 6 previous attempts I have now painted a full 1500 point space marine army!.

I went for the techno-runes on the force sword in the end. Not sure I'm 100% happy with it but it looks suitably differant from the pwoer weapons in the army whilst still keeping to the limited palette. No pics tonight (due to the aforementioned work in less than 6 hours) but I will get one up tomorrow afterwork, and with a bit of luck, wil get a full army pic at the club tomorrow night afterall

Time for an update then

Here's the libby as he currently is. I expect I'll go back and rework the sword some in the future, and there are a couple of litle touches that need a bit of work (that painting at 2 in the monring really starts to tell) but this is as finished as he's getting for the time being:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/lib4.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/lib3.jpg

And, whilst I think of the models I have painted (for this and other armies) I don't really see Daedalus the Codicier as perhaps deserving of my first foray into photoshopped backgrounds, I knocked this up. I should have used the pen tool to cut out the model but got lazy as I was only messing around and relied on the magic wand instead. It was really just a test to see if I could do it

Project Iron Rain has begun. I'm still not sure when I'll be receiving the drop pods I ordered from Forge World (will chase them about it tomorrow) so I've cracked on with the models still to be painted.

I've assembled the 8 remaining tac marines that are needed to bulk out my tac squads. I haven't put any melta guns in there as I think I''ll just stick with the plasma guns I already have built and painted in the squads. No pics of these as there's not really much to see until they're painted.

The termi librarian has been done. I didn't really have to do anything to the model as I really love the stock sculpt. I swapped out the 'shoulder' book for a more reserved plastic icon.

I've built both dreads too:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/dread1.jpg

For the venerable dread I built up the base more to make it taler than a standard dread, and added a plasticard spacer between the torso and hips to add a bit more height to the model. The greave decorations come from the 40K basing kit brass etch sprue and there are other various gubbinz stuck on there to bring the dread in line with my vets (being regular marines covered in more 'bling').

Excluding the drop pods, I just need to glue 4 moe vets, but as I'm out of both glue and the brass rod used to make the sea lances, I'm not going to be able to get them done before Tuesday.

I'm really not sure which unit to paint first now. I'm torn between the standard dread or the termi squad and Libby (really love the termi models)

Feeling the urge to do something marine related, but still being out of metal rod for vets I decided to assemble a model I've had kicking around for a few months trying to find a 40K army to call his home.

Presenting the Iron snakes first Ally, inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn. The Model is ltd edition black library diorama eisenhorn (soactually the only 28mm citadel sculpt of the character). He's in a realy interesting pose, sort of twisting round a corner whilst sighting his bolt pistol. unfportunatly, this non-tandard pose makes him nearly impossible to photograph! I've tkane shots from a bunchof different angles to hopefuly give you an idea of what the model actually looks like

I'm planning to paint him in the classic =I= paint sheme (purple and white etc). Not sure how this guy will fit into some lists. I expect I'll run him as an inquisitor lord (backed up by 2 HB servitors) and bring Cherubael along in the form of a daemonost elite option. Might even throw a squad of the Tanith First and Only models in there as 'inquisitorial stormtroopers' to round out the Dan Abnettness. Afterall, IIRC, a large contingent of iron snakes were dedicated to the Sabbat worlds campaign (Tanith's primary - and so far only - theatre of operation) and although the Eisenhorn books predate the Ghosts books by circa 500 years, it's not unheard of for an inquisitor to live that long (espescially one as 'pragmatic' as Eisenhorn)

I'm even less sure where he'll fit into my painting schedule ;)

Thanks

love the idea of the Tanith fighting along side the inquisition, but if you've read the books they dispise the inquisition. because they were always accusing Brin Milo (tanith pipe player, and the last remaining "youth" of Tanith) as being some sort of demon/psyker.

On that note your iron snakes look amazing.

I know what you mean. but I figure, it's not like they realy get the choice ;) Plus Eisenhorn can be a pretty persuasive guy.

If I do a stormtrooper squad out of them, it will probably be the Gereon 'behind enemy lines' team as this gives me most of the current characters to play around with.

Really I just want an excuse to field the Eisenhorn model on the previous page ;)

Termi squad and termi libby (previous page also) will be this weekd project. I might be able to squeeze in a dread during the eveneings too

Piccless progress report:

After opening an umbrella in a passageway woefully narrow to accomodate it, I was able to fashion a make shift shelter for undercoatspraying in the rainy northern weather. I got both dreads, esienhorn and all the termis undercoated. After a quick trip to town (where I picked up the brass rod for the ets, 2 landspeeder nda venerable dread to replace the converted one I had planned to use (it will now be the regular dread and the previous regular dread will go on the 'to paint for apocalypse games only' pile)) I got to work on the 4 termis in metallic colours.

These guys are now done and the base rims are drying as I type. I'll get pics up tomorrow (too late to mess around witht he light box now!). I've also got the previously venerable, now regular dread basecoated in pig iron and drybrushed in boltgun metal. Tomorrow I can get to work blending the metal highlights onto it and hopefully have the walker finished by nightfall and posted along with the termis.

Man I love the Plastic terminator models. They fit so well on the abse, with just enough space to really do something with the spare space, and unlike the regular 'gorilla-armed-marines' they proportions are pretty good. If it weren't for the fact that Skypio is the only squad in the chapter that has access to Terminator armour, I'd be painting up a few more squads of these boys. So without further gilding the Lilly, and with no more ado, Notable Skypio:

Captain Medes, commander of Skypio made from the FW commander Culn model. I think there were some miscast lines ion the face so tried to paint them up as scars instead. Faces (at least human ones) are definatley not my strong suit so I'l let you decide whether it workd or not.

Update time again! I debated whethre to paint the weapon arms up in white to mimic the shoulderpads of the marines, but decided against it in the end as the pads are armour trim, whilst the dreads weapons are part of the armour proper. I messed up witht he lettering on the nameplate at the top, and intend to repaint it and re letter it next time I get the paints out.

Update: I've glued the venerable dread (pretty stock out iof the box+ a base similar to the other dreads) and one of the landspeeders. For the speeer I built up a corner of the Citys of Death buildings on the abse and pinned the wing into it removing the need for one of those pesky, breakable flying stands. Should get some quick pics up tomorrow after work. I might even get chance toget another speeder assembled before heading down tothe gaming club

I've now assembled a 2nd landspeeder (this one with a single wing precariously pinned to a piece of cities of death terrain, and 4 more sea lance wielding vets (mostly using the FW Mk IV torsos and heads). It's a bit late for photos (work tomorrow) but I'll try and get some afterwards (+ the ven dread and the other speeder).

so expect a photo update tomorrow

one minor point - I thought that the squad banners were held by troopers, IIRC Andromak holds the Damocles banner.

You're quite right. It should be carried by a squad member, but I thought for game purposes this would be too confusing to my opponent and require too much explanation pre game, so like the symbol colour, I took a little artistic license

Time for a big WIP update. The following stuff is all still awaiting having their bases textured, but as it doesn't look to stop raining any time soon for a decent undercoating session, i'm in no rush.

First up a couple of flying standless landspeeders. I've seen far better versions of this technique around on the net, but for a first time at basing any flying thing sans the stand, I'm pretty happy with them. The first speeder needs a bit of a sanding down where I got over eager with the polycement though!

Speeder number 1:

There's pretty much no conversion work done to the venerabled read model as, it turns out, I really like the stock model. I think it's another GW marine model where the proportions are all right and it just looks...good. All I did was give it a taller base to fit in with the rest of the army:

Damn, just noticed it. Where did you manage to get the Eisenhorn model? I've been looking for ages to get my paws on one.

After a few months of bidding on them over at eBay, I managed to pick one up for a price I was willing to pay (still not cheap though ;))

On the eisenhorn front, I've found a way to include him in every one of the Iron Snakes Games. in addition to making the occasional cameo as an inquisitor/lord his pointing pose makes him perfect for the revolving centre of a turn counter. I'm going to gut a hole in the middle of a 60mm base, do up the base like the rest of the army and divide it into 6. Then I can rotate Eisenhorn each turn to be pointing at the correct number, allowing me to get him on the table as often as possible.

Didn't quite get as much done as I would have hoped today (didn't finish work till 7.30, then unable to face the prospect of cooking we headed out for a chinese) but I have got the skin and whioe reobes/ shoulder pads done. Still to do is the red, silver, gold and scroll work as well as the base.

I hope to have the libby painted by tomorrow evening.

I decided to keep the buildings on the base fairly neutral in the end. I wanted them to fit with the existing basing scheme without standing out too much (they're only window dressing for the speeders afterall). I used a variation ont he recipe used on my HORDES Circle Orboros stone constructs:
-basecoat astronomicon grey
-wash with chaos black:water:glaze medium 1:8:4
-drybrush with codex grey
-drybrush with codex grey:bleached bone 1:1
Some of the rivits were then picked out with a bit of chestnut ink

Might skip the gaming club tomorrow to get the termis assemled (I'm planning to heavily convert the 'sergeant' to be carrying the armiy's one and only power-sea-lance) so might have another update then.

I really like the Dread, although his head kind of blends in with the rest of his body to the point that you can't really distinguish it. I think it would look a lot better if you painted it the same white you have been using for the marine's cloaks/tabards.

I really like the dreads head the way it is now. Looks very menacing indeed!

How did you attach the frist land speeder to the building? Can its tiny wing actually bear all the weight? Well, I really like the look, much better then flying bases. :>

Corai
31-01-2008, 22:44
Thanks Roel?

The first speeder has two pins running down the entire length of it's wing which go all the way through the building (hey're disguised as rivets on the other side. The pins were carefully superglued, making sure not to get any glue on the wing tip. Then I covered the wing tip in poly cement and pressed it all into the building. The superglue in the pins dried quickly, holding the speeder in position whilst the polycement dryed (much longer drying time). the key is to really apply force to the join as, becasue of the way polycement works, the more pressure you put into a bond, the better it will hold in the future

Thanks

okay. no photos yet but I have soaked, scrubbed and dryed all the various drop pod pieces. They are all now back in the zip lock bags they came in (only this time they're arranged by component rather than as complete pods...eg.g al fins in one bag, all abses in aother etc etc). Hopefully I'll get a few assembled tomorrow night.

They seem to be weeping so,me more lubricant out (whilst resin's pourous nature makes it great at soaking up superglue for a solid bond, it also means even a long soak won't get rid of al the mould release agent on some of the bigger pieces).

I'm planning to give the models a quick coating of purity seal/gloss varnish before applying the undercoat to hopefull seal away some of the lubricant. I've heard you can do the same thing with car matt black spray but have tried this on some test resin and it just flaked right off, so this time I'll try varnish then good old GW chaos blackspray

Drop pod the First:

This one is in more of a 'resting on a pile of rubble' kind of pose. The base is an upturned Birds Custard Powder lid with the rim cut off and some plasticard edging. once the PVA is dry I need to go back and touch up some areas where the sand missed, then get the whole thingloss varnished and undercoated.

tomorrow I'm going to build the second one, with the lid the other way round, so the pod can be literally sunked into the ground a bit more. Somewhere down the line, one of them is going to be almsot horizontal, with a skid mark behind it, a door blown off and a marine leaning out blasting away with his bolter

Drop pod the Second:

The Procreate on the base is still curing on this one so I have to ait for that to dry before texturing the base with sand, so won't get chance to do that until tomorrow evening. With this pod, I thought I'd try and show the dangerous side of being fired from space into a planet in what equates to a giant bulet with seat belts. One of the doors has blown off, and at least one of the marines inside has been killed. I drilled some holes, cut some scratches into the amrour and replaced the head with a plastic one hanging limply. I'm not sure if this shows too well in the photos though. The standing marine is, I invisage, from the next compartment over where the door has been completely torn off.

Productivity has been at a bitof a low this week as I'm currently suffering with not one, but two sickness bugs (collect the whole set!). I've been off work today and in between drug addled hazes I managed to assemble the last 3 pods. They are currently waiting for basing though so there isn't really anything to show yet. I'm pretty much out of ideas for 'dioramas' so I expect at least two of the remainig pods will be similar tot he fiorst, just sticking out at differant angles. I am thinking of mounting the 5th in the ame pseudo-horizontal posito as the downed pod, nd converting marines all climbing from it. In my minds eye, these guys haven't been shot down/crashed in the same way, they've just taen a bit of a bumby ride.

In related news I won and eBay auction for a dreadnought drop pod, so whilst I was planning to add another 2 pods with deathwind launchers to my forces when I head down to GWHQ for the Battle of Ablion campaign weekend, I might just get a 2nd dreadnought piod so both my walkers can arrive in suitabley larger-than-average-pod style.

Thanks

Any suggestions as to how to sculpt the smoke? It's not too clear in the photos but gravel is already kind of being blown away in it's wake. The base dips down into a crater and al the detritus usually covering the baltefield/my bases has been pushed up to the lip by the force of the thrusters.

I love the look of the smoke/jetwash but I'm not sure I could really pull it off

I thought about making something similar for my Eldar skimmers, and came up with two solutions (both need to be tried, yet, but, on paper, they might both work):

solution 1:
-you can use some transaperent sheets (like the blister packages) and cut them as irregular "stars" (well.. almost) (make about 3 or 4). Bear in mind: the "star" should be bigger than the base of the model.
-place them one over the other;
-get a live flame, and rapidily pass it under the points sticking out of the base, to make the curly;
-glue gravel over the points of the stars.

slution 2:
-make some curls out of wire, as if these were smoke coming from the pod vents (3-4 should be enough);
-over each curly wire, spray polyurethain foam (the one workers usually spray to fill gaps in walls, etc.). Carefull, 'cause it expands, so spray just a tad, following the wire armature. Help yourself with a glove;
-repeat the process for all the wires.
-after the polyurethain has dried it is has solid as polystyrene, and so you can chip it with a knife, to make it more "irrgular". You can also pour glue over it, to melt it (do this outside and with a mask, as fumes are harmful).
-When this has dried, you can continue to add polyurethain or add details, according to your liking.

hope I gave you some insight.

Hi Corai, nice work with the drop pods.

I've though about building a few blast/explosion type scenery with billowing smoke rushing from them.

In this instance you could create lengths of wire and glue large clumps of hobby tree foliage to them that taper to a point the further out they go. (much like the point of the star suggestion from the post above).

Attach these smoke arms at the point of blast origin ie the middle of your crater base caused by the retro thrusters.

The clumps of foliage can be sprayed patchy white and grey. After the paint is dry you can glue random bits of gravel to the furthermost points to show the dirt being blown away.

I hope this all make sense.....without pictures it's quite challenging to articulate!

Could you have one on a larger base, landed vertically, crashed though some ruins. Lots of rubble and the doors having smashed through some walls when they opened?

Well I've finally found the energy to drag my ass out of bed long enoug to get some painting done this week (illness sucks!)

No pics yet, but I have started painting the second half of terminator squad skypio. The armour is done and the smoke wash drying as I type. With a bit of luck, I should get the rest of the unit painted after work tomorrow, if not expect finished pics by monday evening.

the termi squad will give me everything I need for an effective 1500K firce (or so I hope) for the Yorkshire Open heats on Sunday 17th. It'snot the iron rain drop pod army I would have liked to have taken, but it's close.

It's still possible to get some, if not all of the pods painted before the tourney date (although the marines and interiors will be left undercoated and hidden for the time being. Assuming it takes me until monday to finish the termis, that would give me a day a drop pod toget them done. Can my tank brush handle it? tune in next week to find out ;)

After the pods are finished (including interiors) I'm going to take a break from the iron snakes and get my chaos fantasy army painted for the Yorkshire Open Finals. As such, expect to see a bunch of stuff appearing in the trading section of the site (like 9 rhinos complete on spure...except for the nameplate/scroll which has been removed from the accessory sprue for my pods). Additionally, building the army (now possible to field at around 3K points for apocalypse, espescially if I ever get that titan painted) has left me with a plethora of choice spare marine bits, so if anyone's looking for anything in particular drop me a PM and I'll see if I can dig it out for them (got a lot of plastic dev weapons, espescially lascannons, plasma cannons and multimeltas etc)

thanks

Well I finally found the inspiration to get the second half of squad skypio painted and ready for action at this weekends tourney.

Again as I finished them I was struck by how fantastic he plastic terminator kit is and how much I enjoy using it. It's only a shae that the Iron snakes only have access to the 10 suits or I'd totally paint up a deathwing/lysanderwing style termi heavy army of these guys.

Well I managed to walk away from the Yorkshire Open Tournament heats today with the best army award, and the prize for overall victor (I actually won a tournamment...I'm in shock, I mean I struggle to win the dice roll to see who goes first, let alone an actual game!).

I wasn't really expecting to qualify for the finals but I'll be there now on the 9th March. That gives me around 3 weeks to get my drop pods into shape. I still need to paintt he rest of my 2K WFB army for the finals of that tourney later in the month so the drop pods are going to get exterior paint jobs only (except for the one which is blown oen of course) for now. Work starts on Tuesday, let's see how quickly I can get 5 pods painted up

Thanks Girathon :D

Right guys, I need some help. I had planned to leave the decision of how to paint my drop pod interiors until a later date as I could always just do the exteriors, but I forgot that I'd modelled one of the pods with a door blown off, so it looks like I'll have to address this sooner rather than later.

So how should I paint these things? I can think of 4 alternatives, but I'm not sure I'm sold on any of them:

1 - tau sept ochre. You seem to see a lot of marine interiors painted i nthis type of pastel orange/flesh tone colour. It woudl certainly contrast with the dark, oily silver and the bright white on the outside of the pod but might be too much of a contrast, drawing the eye to the open points instead of the chapter coloured outer points.

2 - Space Wolf Grey. This should provide some contrast as above, but ties in more with the cool palette used for the majority of the models. It's very close to skull white in colour though so might not work so well withthe large flat white panels.

3 - Black/grey. just go for a matte, non metallic version of the outer colour. this should guarantee me a unified looking pod which gels with the rest of the army, but it might wind up being very dull.

4 - Dheneb Stone. The other optio nwould be to do it in the same Stone, wash with umbral umber, highlight with menoth white highlight that I use on the parchment and purity seals throughout the army. This should fit with the rest of the army, but I'm not sure if such a large portion of it will wind up being too 'warm' for the model.

Any thoughts? other suggestions?

thanks
Corai

I'd go with SpaceWolf Grey or Dheneb Stone, personally - too many yellowy marine interiors if you ask me!

ghostmaker12
18-02-2008, 21:09
space Wolves Grey seems like the way to go since its very pale.

Corai
20-02-2008, 21:42
2 down, 3 to go. This si the first pod I painted. I thought it would be too dull without some more white in there but I think it came off looking too white. All that extra white also took an age to paint. I think I'll keep this as the command pod but paint the rest in the scheme of the next pod.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/paintedpod2.jpg
And the slightly more toned down pod:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/paintedpod1.jpg

thanks

that Drop Pod is gorgeous!

as for interriors I'd sat rge Tau Sept Ochre. it woul really pop with the exterior and provide some nice contrast

I really like the pod, and imo i don't think there's too much white. Much better then too much silver.

Seconded on the sept ochre for the interior

Cygnusmaximus
21-02-2008, 00:03
If you opt to do all of the pods like the second one, you could even go white on the interiors - though I'd be inclined to do something a little more earthy. Tau-sept Ochre would do the trick, though I don't like yellowy interiors. That's personal preference, though.
And on the "command pod", I'd give the white some black streaks - the pod did just hurtle to the planet's surface at incredibly high speed, afterall.

Corai
27-02-2008, 18:15
A bit more frantic painting and I've got 2 more pods finished (just 1 to go). As you can see I opted for the Dheneb stone approach for the interiors. It looks a little Star Trek but I think it fits the colour scheme of the rest of the army better.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/droppod16.jpg
I've not painted the engines glowing yet as I'm not sure whether I'm going to add some epxanding foam under it or not.

I love the crispy-ness of your painting... awsome work.

I am not too convinced about spraying foam under the flying pod... now that it's painted, you would risk to ruin an awsome paintjob.
Dunno... I hardly go back and fix painted models... but each his own.

After a win with the drop poda rmy tonight I've found a bit more motivation. I want to get all the interiors (of the 3 opening drop pods) and the 15 resin marines togo inside them painted up before the tourney. Plus, of course, the remaining pod. That ought to make for a pretty repetative painting week but I think I'll be happy with the outcome.

then I an happily put the iron snakes to rest for a while wilst I crack on with my AT-43 karmans and 5 model WFB chaos army...there is always that titan that needs painting though...

wow, it seems like I've been painting these drop pods forever. Thankfully I've finally got them finished (and just in time for this weekends Yorkshire Open Tournament). I also got the interiros of the 2 other opening pods painted. the non-command pod has had marines painted and glued inside, but as the command pod is going to be transporting termis I've left the interior empty.

Here's the pod I finished of today:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/droppod19.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/droppod18.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/droppod17.jpg

Now the only outstanding models to be painted for the army are the Eisenhorn inquisitor and Warhound Titan. As neither are in power armour (man have I had enough of painting that stuff for a long time!) I'm hoping to get these done in the next few months and put a cap on the Iron Snakes.

But for now, I've got some WFB chaos models needed for a tourney at the end of the month...

Well the Yorksire Open Finals have been and gone. The drop pod army didn't perform fantastically (2 losses and a draw) but I had 3 great games agaisnt very pleasant opponents, and I on Best Army to boot, which was a very pleasant surprise as I was up agaisnt some very stiff competition (including a lovely snow themed guard amry and a couple of very stirking eldar forces).

With 2 Best Army Wins for the snakes, maybe capping them here is a bit hasty, I feel as though they need rewarding in some way. Maybe it's time I finally painted them that titan...

Sea Lances, drop pods, Mk. IV armor- pure win.

Now all you need is 300 notables, all with sea lances and combat shields, led by a very angry captain.
Sort of like 300, but without the leather thongs. That's kind of a no-no with space marines.
