A lot of stuff to sift through there, but still maybe worth a look.

If we all just have a quick skim through, we could post any prize nuggets we come across (I haven't found any yet, but there's plenty more to look at).

Seems like very little survives. Good for nostalgia though (browsing the 'currently active users' list is a blast from the past).

The earliest page the seem to have from the forums is this (http://web.archive.org/web/20010606102509/http://forums.portent.net/)

Earliest page for portent.net here (http://web.archive.org/web/19990125102304/http://www.portent.net/)

Nice stab of nostalgia, right in the heart. Left ventricle in particular
Miss those days to be quite honest, even the hobby felt different back then

Just check this (http://web.archive.org/web/19991006050727/www.portent.net/rumours/previous/40k/40k_april98.html) out. It's hilarious! (pre 3rd ed. rumours)

Great stuff.

Thats really cool. I feel like an Adeptus Explorator, clad in an environment-sealed suit, waving my lux-amp around the walls of a dusty tomb - the dusty tomb of Portent.

P.S Perhaps we could organise retrieval teams to go in and search? :p Okay, just being silly now. Awesome find though.

I can't claim any credit, it was in Dakkadakka's tribute thread m'thingumy.

A shame there isn't more of the old stuff there. The forums.portent.net/archive part has a few old threads in it though.

Sorry for double posting but - HOLY CR#P!! I just found an old story of mine in the "Stories - 40K section"!! You have no idea how stoked I am!! Called "Inhuman Intentions" - I thought I'd lost it long ago. All this nostalgia is making me heady. :D

Now, if I can just find the drawings I posted too... *switching on lux-amp, descends into the darkness*

i guess we wont be seeing much of him for a long time to come

watch out for the black and white space marine threads that might be saved

15-09-2005, 14:44
If any of you guys happen to stumble over a 'how to pronounce things properly' thread, please give me a heads up. I remember laughing till I cried over those. :D

*cough* *splutter* *HOKK!!* Geez, it's dusty in there. You know, I'm really tempted to jump on the Warseer Rumour Pages and start posting things like "Emperor dies!! - Space Marines to fight as guerilas!!" and "AdMech army, just around the corner!!" - wow, those were some really whacked out Rumours back then, pre-3rd ed 40K. I don't think Brimstone would see the funny side of it, somehow :D :p

P.S - 300 posts W00t!! ;)

15-09-2005, 14:56
back in the day, brings back some memories, anyone seen any of the hospital threads?

15-09-2005, 15:01

Look at the oldest front page:

"There are currently 21 members and 19 guests on the boards. | Most users ever online was 105 on 05-22-2001 at 05:54 PM.
Anarchy, Bedrock, Big Mek, Blade Runner, BladeSinger, etherite, Grom the Goblin, GroundPounder, Hywel, Logan Grimnar, Mcbain, NdG, Tartalo, The_Executioner, Tyra_Nid, Valki, Wanderingblade, Wolf Lord Bloodangel, Xavier "

Some familiar names even from the very start!

Sorry to fry your noodle diddimz - but I'm not joking, I have no idea what these Stealth Marines are supposed to have been. I've been looking - but with limited archives in the early years I don't think I'll find the blighters.

But I have found some interesting bits:

"No more new versions of Fantasy or 40K!" - hmm, ole Pete Closs got that one wrong slightly ;)

"Tau apparently have R30" Str 5 guns - but it's unlikely there will be too many of them on the battlefield at any one time" - well, I guess we all thought this was too good to be true at the time. It's the Broadsides you have to look out for though

I miss portent, so much fun, but, well, I feel sad to see it again, it's like a friend, and now it's dead, but we can inspect the body ;)

15-09-2005, 16:11
Wow, there's a lot of eye of terror threads in there (and dust, cobwebs etc).

Although I did manage to find a 40k Background menu (the earlier pages seem to have menus rather than individual topics like the later pages for those who want to have a look around), and had a look in some of the topics - including Kage and Philip S arguing over space marine physical stature.

Guess somethings don't change all that much. :D More seriously, it's actually slightly sad how many times certain topics were raised.

He Who Laughs, The Stealth Marines were taken from a posting on the GW boards, and laughed at for a good while.
To say they were overpowered would be the biggest understatement since someone said 0 Kelvin was "on the chilly side". ;)

"No more new versions of Fantasy or 40K!"
Well, the latest 40k is really a 3.1 rather than a 4, and the next warhammers allegedly going to be a 6.1 rather than 7.

Anyway, wouldn't control over any of the content we wanted to possibly restore from there technically belong to Pete?

15-09-2005, 17:55
Those stealth marines were posted on the GW forum with their sniper rifles and insane stats. hope someone has a link or something lying around to them.
