I've been posting my Death Guard blog over at Tau Online for awhile but I thought I would share the progress here as well.

I've just copied my previous posts from my thread there and from the one at B&C.

October 3rd
I have finally received all my bits and have started work on my Death Guard army. I finished the first and probably largest portion of my army, the plague marines. Here are 35 of them almost ready for painting. I need to do some minor sculpting work on some but they are done for the most part.

The back packs I haven't started yet, actually. I need to order a few more and then I will get to work on those. They will have lots of banners and trophies and nearly every backpack will have some sort of conversion to it.

A few of my aspiring Champions. These three are the most heavily converted. The other two weren't really changed all that much.

Here are a few group shots of the standard plague marines. All the models have been pinned at the arms. Those pictured without arms will be fully assembled after painting.

Next up will be the backpacks and then I will get to work on my Terminators who will all be extensively converted with alternate heads, Typhus-style vents and bloated torsos.

As always C&C is welcome.

October 8th

I started on the first of the terminator squad today. I made the mistake of adding greenstuff on too many areas at once and accidently ruined the detail a number of times on certain areas. I think I fixed it to where it looks OK but not as good as it originally did. The vents are not finished. I should've waited to add those later but I didn't want the GS to go to waste. Detail will be added to them once they dry.

The Lord is progressing much more slowly since I'm waiting on my battlewagon bits order to arrive. I have started work on the torso and the head. The legs are not the ones being used and are simply there to stand the model upright.

October 18th

I've been working on quite few things for my Death Guard force and at this pace I should have my whole army finished within a few weeks.

I finished all the backpacks for my plaguemarines. This was a tedious task and I'm glad its done but I think the results were worth the effort. Nearly every backpack has some sort of conversion to it.

The whole group:

Here's another Terminator I've been working on. The vents still need greenstuff and I've come up with a quicker way to do this so hopefully I'll have all my Terminators done shortly.

I've also finished my Obliterators. I'm very pleased with how these turned out. I spent awhile deciding on different head options since I really do not like the standard ones. I opted to use heavily converted Kharn heads since I had an excess of them lying around. I'm not really a fan off having the mishmash of weapons on the obliterators so I tried to give them the look of forming into a specific weapon. The extra weapon slots were filled and sculpted with greenstuff.

That's all for now but I'm going to start focusing more on the terminators and finish them all off as they are the last big unit left to do(only 12 to go!).

After they are done I will start focusing more on character models, including finishing my Lord and starting work on my Sorcerer and Deamon Prince. Then I have a land raider, predator and squad of chosen which will be Doghouse pattern and finally a Plaguereaper baneblade.

I'm also thinking about doing a massive conversion of Typhus. I don't think he is nearly imposing enough so I'm thinking of some ideas right now and I may get to work on that once the bulk of my army is complete.

C&C welcome. :)

November 28th

It's been awhile since I've had an update but I've got my terminators about 90% done. They've been assembled and the basics of the bases are done. I need to add vents to their backs and finish texturing the bases before painting. I'll be getting to work on the Land raider, Predator and some heavily converted Chosen pretty soon.

Sorry for the bad pics, I'll try and get some better ones once they're 100% finished and there is daylight.

So that's my current progress. You may notice some terminators had early work on the vents that are now removed. I'm currently rethinking how I will be applying the vents, if at all. Any suggestions or comments welcome.

Sorry for the ridiculous amount of posts for this, I can only post 4 pics per post.

That`s a beautiful sight, a horde of plaguemarines:D. Looking forard to seeing your take on the landraider and the choosen. The backpacks must have been an effort cleaning and then converting, I hated them when I did my worldeaters and deathguard. Any musing on what your paint scheme will be?

That's some fantastic work, Grandfather Nurgle would grin with pride. I've just finished converting some plague raptors for my own Death Guard, following some of the modelling guides on the GW site and learning to use green stuff as I go. Might post my own thread when I'm done painting them.

Excellent work on these guys so far.

Especially liking the termi's and aspiring champions makes me look at my unfinished army and get motivated to do so.

But since the new 'dex, i've lost the enthusiam for the nurgle boys (although I have been troubled by more illness since i turned my back on papa nurgle....maybe it is a sign).

I'm rambling now.

Look forward to seeing more.

Hot conversions dude, hope you're as good a painter... there are too many nurgle painters out there that just paint messy and use the excuse "It's nurgle, it works..."
No, it doesn't... (don't mean to sound rude... it's the excuse that annoys me, not the skill)
Nice mixing of fantasy + 40k too...
Also... a heap of spare kharn heads? Just how many of him have you gotten your hands on :p:cheese:

Thanks for the comments so far. I've been hard at work on a land raider that I'll hopefully have finished later tonight.

Painting will begin once the entire army is assembled, which may be a little ways off. I still have the power armor lord, a sorcerer, a predator, a squad of chosen and a few more termies to build.

I'm a decent painter, I think, but I paint pretty slowly, which is why i prefer to get everything assembled first. Anyway, I'm not a fan of messy death guard either. They will be suitably gross and decayed but not because of sloppy painting.

The Kharn heads...well I didn't intend to have so many, I don't even have the actual Kharn model. I placed a rather large bitz order with GW right around the codex release and for some reason they sent identical packages to both my shipping address(my house) and my billing address(my parent's house). So I got double of everything I ordered including 2 new copies of the Chaos codex! It's been quite helpful having more than enough of everything I need for converting and if I screw up or just want to try out a crazy conversion idea I can just grab a fresh bit if it doesn't turn out well.

I've been working on my Land Raider over the weekend but it's taking longer than expected. The results so far I think are pretty good. I need to do alot more to get it finished, mostly just greenstuff and the tank commander. I've got a few WIP shots so any comments are criticisms would be helpful at this stage since I can still rework pretty much any areas I need to.

I've gotten a bit more work done on the land raider. I ran out of greenstuff and had to go pick some more up today to finish it. As it stands, I'd say it's about 90% done. I need to finish the tank commander and add a a little more decay on the armor. Sorry again for the crappy photos. I always seem to be taking pictures at night.

The land raider is near completion. I've added the last of the greenstuff I think I need and I just have to dirty up the tracks with some flock/pva mixture, which I'll probably do later tonight. I'll have pics up as soon as it's done.

In the meantime I got some significant work done on my power armor Lord. I just need to do some minor gap filling and do the base and he'll be done.

Cheers,

It's actually the mounted Archaon torso. If I had the non-mounted one I probably would've kept his legs rather than having to bitz order some termie legs. It took awhile to figure out what legs to use. I though about obliterator legs but I'm saving those for my Typhus conversion.

On all the forums I've been posting people keep asking to see painted models so I think I'll get a test mini painted up tomorrow. I've been having so much fun with the converting I haven't wanted to start painting until I finished converting everything but I'm damn near done except for the Chosen and a few characters so I guess it's time to start painting. :) I'm still not 100% sure on the scheme so I'll have to experiment a little bit on the first guy.

Thanks for the comment! :)

Now that the holidays are over I finally had some time to get a bit of painting done. I've almost finished my first plague marine. The eyes and trophy rack need to be painted but other than that this guy is finished. The painting is a bit rough but I'm happy with it overall since this is the first model I've painted in a few months. Once I get the color scheme down I should start getting smoother transitions in the blending but I think it's ok for tabletop standard.

Looks good, nice and diseased. The only thing I would suggest to make the scheme pop a little is to do 1 more highlight on the most raised surfaces (for the green and red). If you just did a quick edgeing highlight on those two areas it would look fantastic IMHO.

Otherwise, looks great so keep painting!!

It's been awhile since I've had an update of any conversion work but I've made some progress on a predator I had assembled but hadn't added nurgle goodness to until today. I'm particularly happy with the vents which I just added at the last minute before doing greenstuff work. I have a second predator that I will do the same to. I also have ordered turret bits so I can change from lascannon to autocannon depending on what I want to field.

As it stands this is about 45% done. I wanted to let the greenstuff dry before working on the other side. I have a habit of smudging the greenstuff with my fingers if I do too much work all at once.

where did you get those "tank" backpacks for your marines? they look very promising. ill probabaly be delving into a second FOC of deathguard in the summer, so that means another 42 plague marines, i would love to get some of those packs.

Starfarer
07-01-2008, 07:17
Those are Skaven Globadier backpacks. I filed off the Skaven symbols and added various spiky bits to make them look more like Chaos backpacks. I only use those backpacks on special weapon troops but they would definitely be awesome to do for every plague marine if you were willing to spend the money. I think they are $1.75 a piece on the GW website.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Feel free to use any ideas or techniques you like. I wouldn't have had half the ideas for my own stuff if I hadn't done the same. ;)

Daniel, this is the paint scheme:

Black undercoat

Armor:
2 thin layers of catchan green
1 wash of 50/50 catachan green/chaos black
another layer of catachan green
layer of approx. 75/25 catachan green/rotting flesh
layer of approx. 25/75 catachan green/rotting flesh

Armor Trim:
Thinned layer of chainmail
black wash
wash of approx. 75/25 borwn ink/fiery orange
drybrush of chainmail

The armor trim I'm going to keep working on and experimenting with glazes on metals. I will also be using a different technique for plague swords which will have various rust effects.

Base:
scorched brown
graveyard earth drybrush
kommando khaki drybrush
base trim is pure graveyard earth

Bolter:
scorched brown
terracotta highlights

Nice conversion, especially the vents on the tanks and terminators. Looking forward to see more of this. Oh, and the painted plague marine is great too!

Have you thought of bying a couple of spawns to get some tentacles and other stuff to add? Could be cool - then again, a lot of people have been doing this, and skipping the whole tentacle-thing (as you seem to have done) might actually be even better. Nurgle doesn't necessarily equals tentacles and mutations.

Keep it coming!

The spawns were tempting just due to the amazing amount of bits but I'm not a fan of the tentacle look for nurgle. I prefer the decayed, rotting look and try to stay away from any mutations, which I feel are more a Tzeentch look. That's just my personal take on Nurgle though.

Thanks again for the comments. I should have a good amount of progress done on the terminators soon. I'm considering magnetizing the next predator, and possibly buying a third one and doing the same.

After that I've got most of the bits I need to build around 14-20 heavily converted Chosen, which should be a big project. I'm also hopefully going to start work on my Daemon Prince which I have all the bits minus a head which I haven't found anything suitable, other than sculpting one. (suggestions most welcome)

Then I have a Typhus sculpt to do based off an obliterator and a GUO sculpt based off the new WHFB giant.

Lastly, I'll be doing a plaguereaper baneblade when the VC range is out because I need to wait for some of those sets for conversion work. So I've got a full plate for both painting and modeling but hopefully I can get more painting done as I go.

Hopefully I will have all this done in time for the Daemon Codex which will no doubt add even more stuff to the army. And this was just supposed to be a 2,000 point tournament army.

On the other hand... If I am not mistaken, the Spawn bodies are two halves right? That's four big spots of bubonic, pusladen pieces of swelling yuckiness added to your tank... That's what I am probably going to do to my Land Raider anyways...

Just a thought, perhaps it will inspire you...

But enough about me and my silly ideas! On with more pictures! You are doing an awesome job and I look forward to any update!

I also started on my Daemon Prince. He's coming along a bit slowly. I added the wings today which were a bit of a pain to saw in half. The greenstuff work is in the early stages and at this point what you see is just gap filling and shaping the backs of the wings. I'll be adding feathers and other detail bits soon. The head is causing me problems. I'm working on a conversion using the standard head but I'm not too happy with it. I'd appreciate any suggestions for alternate heads.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard053.jpg

Lastly, just a bit of fun hacking up a marine. I was going to have this guy under the DP but I think he takes up too much room and might distract from the DP so I'm probably just going to have a few nurglings on the base. Anyway, the concept here was that the marine's armor was being eaten away by slashes from the DP's sword. I'll have to finish him later and maybe I will add him to a larger base for another model.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard054.jpg

I'm not sure what will be up next after I finish these models. I have alot I want to start and more stuff coming in the mail. I figured I would take requests since it makes the decisions pretty easy for me. I may take another week to get the parts but here's what's on the "to do" list:

20 Chosen

Typhus based off an Obliterator

GUO sculpt( possibly based off the WHFB Giant)

Defiler/ WHFB Giant kit bash

C&C welcome as always. :)

Some exelent conversion work here.

The tubes coming out of your predator really balance the piece in a very nurglesque way, i think you should add a few to the back of your landraider.

Your charicter and marine conversions are also top knotch.

Gday. I've just had a quick skim over your thread and have a small suggestion: if you got a lighter and melted the top of the vents for your termies a little it might make them look a bit more plaguey. Just enough so that the tops are a little blobby.

Nice work so far. :D

I am going to actually, I just pulled it out the other day and was working out how extensive it would be. I think I can do it fairly easily so I'll probably get that done tomorrow as it should be a quick job.

I'll probably start getting come significant painting done soon. I'm still a bit noncommittal on the paintscheme. It looks ok but it's very time consuming for what is just a decent tabletop quality. I haven't decided if I will go for a quicker scheme by just drybrushing or keep working on the layering and try an get a smoother looking paintjob.

Yep, there's only 12 shown. I have two other assembled but those are for a pure lightning claw squad of 7, which has 5 models completely unassembled. I ran out of plasticard so I decided to wait until a later date to finish them.

Thanks for all the comments. I should have some more pics up later tonight. :)

I added vents to the landraider a little while ago. I'll add the greenstuff to them soon, just need to wait for the glue to dry completely.

I've also finished the greenstuff work on the Terminator vents. I just need to finish basing these guys and they'll be finished.

I hope to finish up the DP soon and after that I think I'll get some painting done while I wait on my new models to arrive. If I don't get too distracted I can hopefully get most of the current plague marines painted in the next week or so. We'll see what happens, painting takes me much longer than assembling and converting.

I'm probably going to build up a custom base after looking at some of Scibor's nurgle stuff yesterday. I may use the dread base although that's because I'm not sure I have any other 60mm bases lying around. :)

I've started painting more plague marines. I decided to just go with drybrushing as it's much quicker and I will be able to get much more done in a fraction of the time. I think they've come out pretty good so far but I'd like some feedback before I get too far into the painting process.

Here is the original test model next to 2 more WIP plaguemarines. The one on the left has a slightly heavier drybrush of Rotting Flesh and I think the rest will be a bit darker like the one on the far right.

The pics are kinda bad but here's the 2 new models mostly finished. The backpack icon on the left one was painted after the picture was taken, so that model is now complete. The other need the eyes painted which I forgot to do before taking the pictures. I will probably work a little more on the bolters, which I just decided to change from red to brown.

I also made a few Icon bearers from my terminator squads. I still need to add the vents and Greenstuff some more on these two.

I've been slacking a bit on the updates but I've been working alot on stuff.

I finished the second squad of plague marines earlier this week. The only thing I need to do is paint the rims of their bases. One thing you may notice is I changed the color of the skin to have an undead look. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Now I have to go back an update the other squad to match.

The other project I've been working on is a fairly extensive kit bash of a defiler and WFHB Giant. I started working on it with just a few basic plans so what you see here is just the very early work of things I knew I wanted to do. The giant's torso as the turret with the battlecannon coming out of his stomach. The cannon has a dragon skull that was taken off a club from the giant sprue. I added chains to replace the leather straps that were part of the bit. I decided that I want to have this guy fully customizable so I ordered some magnets and some extra bits so I will be able to change from an all CC defiler to a shooty one or a mix of both. His hands will be dreadnought CC weapons for the CC layout and the guns will be converted on his arms as well. Since there are two sets of arms in the giant kit this is where I will magnetize him, which I think will look pretty awesome once it's done.

For me, the colour of the armour lacks any real depth. Very flat. Adding diluted brown, green and red washed will really help to add some shading and make them look sickly-oozing-cool. Don't wash the entire models in one colour, but rather, add spots of different colour around the armour, so that you get a natural merging of different shades. You can also control the effect this way, by using darker washes in deeper crevices, or red washes around bloated skin or sores.

This worked for my plague marines, and i recommend you try it on one model to see if you like it (even if it's not a marine) just to see if you like the effect. That's my two cents.

I liked the reds, but personally I think think the browns look better. I knew I wanted to have the blue/brown contrast on the plasma and I thought it would be odd to only have brown guns for plasma weaponry so I switched them all to brown and overall I'm happy with how they look.

This is something I plan to do when I add daemons as I want their skin to be the same color as the plaguemarines skin but with glazes of purples and greens to give some contrast. For the plaguemarines however, I wanted a pretty straight forward scheme that allows me to get them painted as quickly as possible while still being pretty decent tabletop standard. I did experiment with different washes and shading but ultimately found drybrushing to achieve the effect I was looking for in a fraction of the time. Even with the technique I currently use these guys took the better part of a week, probably in the area of 15 hours. I'm a really slow painter though.

You can post a pic of yours to show me how they look though, I might give it a try.

Looking good Cadaver. Any chance of getting a pic of the banner on the champ in the newest PM squad.

Yeah, although I don't think you're missing much. It was one of the last things I painted and I kind of rushed it just trying to get things finished. I'm not really pleased with it but I'll get some closeups of it tomorrow for you.

SteelTitan
06-02-2008, 10:38
too bad you are rushing yourself when you first put loads of time in the converting and greenstuffing :( I just started a death guard log myself (it is in my sig somewhere), which is actually my first GS project ever, but i am taking it really slow, trying my best for each individual model. And I want to do the same while painting. My nids can be considered a bit rushed (also in my sig) but i'm not planning on doing the same for this army because the GS already takes loads of time.

And besides, mostly the extra time it takes to add those final details is nothing compared to the time all the basic painting takes (basecoat, flat colours, drybrushing) but it is THAT stage (final details) that makes the model go from 'yeah, ok, looks neat' to 'omg it is awesome!' So most of the time it is really worth the effort. But that is just it...the effort you want to put in. If you like this the most considering the effort you put in, go for it ;) And remember I'm not trying to say I dont like your models, they are great, ive been following this thread for a long time now (first time reply) so i do like em very much! This is just a overview of my theory on "effort VS result".

I have to agree with Siromcyre that from up close they look better than from farther away. The colour look a bit flat indeed, which is too bad because highlighting on marines can look so amazing.
But I am a big fan of strong highlighting because i think it indeed makes for the best tabletop look (because you actually SEE the highlights from far away), as you can see on my nids as well. But again, it is all about personal flavour and again the "effort vs result" theory :P
Apart from that i love em! Hope to see more pictures soon! :D

Man, I haven't even bothered to keep up with my own thread... I've finished converting 8 Chosen so I'll get pics of them up tomorrow. The Defiler has had zero progress since the last pics because I'm still waiting on my order from the Warstore. They are apparently moving their bits department to a new location so it might be awhile before I get the bits I need to finish the defiler.

I've also come up with a crazy idea for raptor conversions using plastic CSMs and spawn bits. I'll try and get the first model up soon while I await some trade shipments for the bulk of the necessary bits.

Some big stuff coming soon for the daemons I'm adding. For anyone interested you can see the early sketches of a commission job for a FW sized GUO by Tau Online's waargh in our joint thread: CadaverVSwaargh (http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=61005.0)

The bits I needed for my defiler conversion finally arrived today. I got a good amount of work done but there's still alot to go. I've put the legs on again to show roughly what it will look like completed but the stance isn't what I'm going for on the finished product. I'm still debating what to use for the base. CDs seem to be the cheapest way but they are slightly too small to fit the whole model on it. I may get some cork tile to extent the size so all the legs fit on the base. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Enough of my rambling, here's the pics.

This arm is magnetized and I'll be converting an arm to hold a twin linked autocannon so I can switch between full CC and a little extra dakka. I was thinking about magnetizing the head as well and having one head with a heavy flamer sticking out of the mouth. You never know until you try. I had barely ever used greenstuff before I started this project. It just takes some practice and learning a few tricks from reading articles about sculpting. I still don't think my greenstuff skills are all that exceptional, which is why I commissioned my GUO scratch build, but overall I'm happy with the results my meager skills allow me to produce. :)

I actually already gave the powerfists claws I made from cut down tow hooks. I'm still undecided if I should keep them or not. I'll post pics and see what people think.

The dragon cannon is indeed going to be coming out of the stomach. :) The blending of the mechanical and organic was something I was really wanting to try out and got alot of inspiration from Giger, although I don't think my style is much like his, I certainly got some ideas from his work and from watching the documentary on the Alien DVD about his work on that movie. Now I'm having to think of a different, yet equally cool look for my second defiler.

I put claws on the dreadnought CCWs but I didn't like the look all that much so they've since been removed. Here's a pic of what they looked like before any greenstuff was used to smooth them out and blend the lines seamlessly with the fingers.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard037-1.jpg

As for the rest of the model, I've finished most of the greenstuff work on the main defiler body but the giant torso still needs a good bit of work to go. I'm working from the back forward so the cannon should be added soon once all the greenstuff on the back is complete. I've also added vents to the back to match those on my tanks.

I didn't get very many good pics but I should have some better ones up soon.

Most of the time I use pre-cured balls of GS. I just push them in and pull up the soft GS around them to blend them in a little.

My "to do" list has absolutely swollen(pun intended) to apocalyptic proportions as of this week. So I've decided before diving into any of my fun new goodies I'll be finishing a few things from the log that are still incomplete. Namely the DP and Defiler. After that I'll be converting a few rhinos from my SM army I recently stripped(with varying results) I've got another LR and some plaguebearers and to top it off a big lot of 21 PMs ranging from RT to current edition I got off ebay.

I am indeed adding some FW, I pre-ordered 20 of the new death guard marines yesterday so hopefully I'll have those sometime in April. I'll be painting vehicles pretty soon but I'm going to start on the rhinos so I need to get those converted first.

I'm deeply impressed by your work here, your green stuff skills in particular are outstanding. Some day I hope to be able to create similarly fine offerings to Father Nurgle.

What's intrigued me at the moment is the zombie flesh effect you've created on your plague marines, particularly the one in your avatar. Any chance you can explain how you did that?

The zombie flesh is actually just ogre flesh and is quite easy. I stumbled across a painting article in an old White Dwarf for painting Ogre flesh and it struck me that it looked much more like undead flesh. Anyway, it's just graveyard earth with a little shadow grey mixed in for the basecoat. I don't really use exact measurements I just kind of eyeball it but I'd say probably something like 80/20 - GE/SG. Then I do a highlight of rotting flesh and then a highlight of bleached bone. It's simple and I think it looks great in contrast to the green armor. I'll most likely be painting my daemons with the same scheme.

Well for a DP head that would look kinda like Typhuses Helmet you could use the Defiler "helmet with horns" to make a head. Carv off the horns and relocate one to the middle of the forehead.

Thanks for the flesh inspiration, I've just given it a go on some plague terminators which had been looking far too healthy. One extra thing I tried was using a little thin red ink to bring out the pustules, that was really quite effective.

I've just about finished up the defiler. There's a little more greenstuff work to be done and some minor detail bits to be added and then I also need to build a base for it.

I've made a little more progress on the daemon prince as well but the idea I had for the head didn't turn out as well as I had planned. At this point I think I'm just going to have to sculpt one myself to get it to my liking. Hopefully I'll have some pics of that up soon.

Liking the defiler a lot, reminds me of an idea I head (but using a Carni instead of a Giant). What I would say would be that it'd probably look better with the skin and flesh hanging arround his waist rather than being tucked into the small joint between him and the machine. That way, it'd look more like him being torn up by machinery and mounted onto the thing, add in a bunch of wires and small mechanical connections between the open and torn surfaces underneath him and the machine.

I almost started laughing when i saw the D. Prince a few pages back, because I thought of doing the exact same thing with the nurgle prince and tomb kings carrion wings. I had decided against it, but now I'm going to do it for sure, it looked fantastic.
I'm going to be doing two D. Princes and for the one that I'm currently working on, I used an ogre head for the base of the sculpt, gave him nurglesque goggles using plastic tubing (probably the same stuff you've been using for vents), his mouth opens into a thick guitar wire chord, and his face will be slightly gaunt when i'm finished with the GS work. Thought I'd throw that out there to add to some ideas as I didn't see a pic with the D.Prince and head yet.

Not yet. I've been converting a few stripped rhinos from my SM army so those are probably going to be painted next. I'll have some pics of them soon but the defiler take awhile to get painted. It's the centerpiece of sorts so I want to get my painting style down before I tackle that project, as far as painting goes.

Ahoy! I'm back with a few updates. I finally got hold of some cork tile to make my defiler base and have built the basic design and set the legs in their final pose. I just need to add a few finishing touches to both the model and the base and it will be done. About time too.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard052-1.jpg

This is the sludge stream that runs through the base. It's been filled with hotglue but will get some water effects once it's painted.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard053-1.jpg

I've also stripped and rebuild to SM rhinos that are now in the service of the Dark gods. They have converted pintle mounted combi-meltas for a little trouble making after they drop off the kids at school. They got the vents to match the other tanks and tie all the vehicles together. I've got three more of these to strip and rebuild.

I'm also in the very early stages of planning my plaguereaper baneblade. It's going to be the most extensive project I've ever built by far and probably will make the defiler look like a walk in the park to build. The project in going to put the total cost in the range of a ForgeWorld baneblade to give you and idea of how many kits and various bits are being used. Expect some teaser pics in a few weeks.

I've been working on finishing up the daemon prince and defiler. I spent a good deal of time today reorganizing all my bitz into some new containers which should save me time digging through boxes. After looking over some old White Dwarf articles featuring Dave Taylor's work I had the idea to recreate the new nurgle head from the CSM box into a DP size head. I've done the sculpting for the basic shape so far and need to clean it up a bit but I wanted to get some feedback before a continued on with it. I also pinned the arms and did the base minus the extra detail work.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard056-1.jpg

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard057-1.jpg

The defiler has been upgraded with extra spikes and chains as well as some more vents on the back. A little more greenstuff has been done on the body and I pretty much just need to finish the head. I've become indecisive about it so I'll probably convert thre different heads and ask for feedback on which one looks best. After spending all this time on it I want it to look "perfect."

Looking really nice

However, again, I cannot help but feel that the lower skinn, fat and such of the body has been tucked in underneath him, looks like he's wearing too tight trousers and his lovehandles are bulging out over the edge.

Take a drab of ripped cloth and hold it arround the fattest part of the belly and look how it falls, I imagine somethinglike that, but with torn flesh and scabbed skinn, maybe some intestines hanging down on the machine itself as well? You then have the connection in the middle of his colon, connecting to his spine and probably keeping the majority (not all) the organs in

I have found split loon tubing can be found in automotive places and are not bad. 1/4" is the standard, but if you can find 1/8" or smaller that is the best for vehicles and troops. (Let me know where you can find such tubing!)

I've been working on painting a rhino and after some thought I decided to take the advice of everyone who has told me put some extra effort into the painting. I've added some inks using Didi's Magic Inks(formerly Kel's Magic sauce I think it was called.) Anyway, The inking does give it some more depth and gives it a dirtier look.

Still pretty WIP but here's the current progress:

I've always been a big fan of the weathering armor, especially on vehicles. I decided it would be very fitting for Death Guard so I did a test piece on an extra rhino door before applying it to the model. It was actually very simple to do and I think it looks pretty good.

I'm going to go back to the plaguemarines and and add these changes to them as well. I think it should look great and hopefully give them a more complete look that i feel they were kind of lacking.

I actually just answered that question over at Tau Online. :D Here's a list the whole scheme.

Primed black

Catachan Green base coat

Drybrush of Camo Green

Drybrush of Rotting Flesh

Didi's Brown ink

Then for the battle damage I took a piece of padding from a blister pack and dabbed it in Chardonite Granite and wiped some off before dabbing it randomly on the raised edges. Then I touched up the blotches with Adeptus Battelgrey, leaving the edges of the Chardonite Granite showing. It was actually really easy. :)

So here's the initial design:

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard094.jpg

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/lonestarcody/DeathGuard095.jpg

Basically just the torso design. The head is just propped in place for now. I'll be filling it in with greenstuff and the smoke launchers have been drilled out and will have wires running to the back of the head.

I guess I should also mention this defiler is going to be a bipedal mech looking defiler. I wanted to do something completely different from my other one.

I didn't do really any planning for the model before I started building it and just kind of started assembling things on the fly. So I'm not really sure if I'll keep the cannon on the chest. It'll be a bit of a pain to change since it's glued together but I'll see how things look once the model gets a little further along.

Big thanks to dax for the idea for the gasmask. I don't think this model would be nearly as good without it.

The flash kind of hides it but there are shallow holes in the gas mask filter to give it a more realistic look rather than just a simple cylinder.

This is all very good indeed.

The defilers are looking great. I really like the soulgrinder style one with it's gut cannon. Whats the head you've used on the cannon from?

I'm also liking the rhino's exhaust vents, I did something similar on one of my rhinos about a year or so ago and I'm slowly adding them to other stuff now.

I must say thanks as well cos I've found Dax's blog from yours and together you're getting me very inspired.

Also have to say your plaguereaper is looking mighty fine. I very much like the hell cannon skull/jaw bits and the nurgling coming up through the vent.

Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've done a little more work, added a huge dozer blade made out of 3 IG ones. Still need to add all the Chaos bling to it so I'll get some pictures of that up pretty soon.

Give me a D, The dragon skull bit on the defiler cannon is from the giant box. It's actually attached to a club so I had to cut it off and reassemble it for the cannon.

This is by far my favorite nurgle army of all time. Great ideas for using the skaven backpacks as... backpacks.
And i cant even begin to say how awesome and made of win your defiler is.

And as was said earlier the plaguereaper cannon is fantastic. looking forward to seeing more of the same quality.

Well, I have a little update to report. I was diligently working on my raptors when a good for nothing friend called me and I continued to try and drill with my pin vice while talking on my cellphone. My hand slipped and I gouged a hole right under my thumbnail, which bled like crazy and hurt like hell. So I decided to call it a day on the converting.

I do have some pics although I was hoping to post pics of the Raptors after they were completely finished.

My Death Guard raptors are renamed Reapers and have a bit of a grim reaper feel to them(hence the name.) I greenstuffed a hood for one and I think like them better without hoods, they look a bit creepier. They will all be carrying scythes for CCWs except the champ. The champ will be based off a standard Raptor champion.

The other day I painted up a PM in an alternate scheme just to see what it would look like. It's pretty cool, I think, although it's a bit rushed as it was just a test mini. I really like the streak method I used on the armor as well as the rust rather than metallics. The weathered armor and purple and green glazes turned out alright, I think. The purple glaze much more visible than the green in these pics.

I'm going to experiment on using these techniques on my regular PMs in the normal colors and maybe combine the rust effect with the metallic armor trim on my PMs. I'm contemplating using this paint scheme for my chosen.

I've gotten alot of comments ont he armor on other forums. Funnily enough, everyone thinks the paint is white but it's actually not. I think it's just the camera flash that makes it a bit brighter. It's bestial brown/ kommando khaki/ bleached bone. The paints were watered down before application but they do look a bit thick in the pics. I guess it's just the angle or bad pics, I guess.

i really like your rust. recipe if i might ask?

The rust is super simple. Scorched brown over black undercoat. Then a wash of bestial brown/fiery orange mix. Apply liberally. I did two coats on the bolter and one on the backpack.

Thanks again for all the comments. My thumb is pretty much healed up so I should be back to work this weekend, hopefully I'll finish the reapers and get my FW plague marines assembled as well. :)

I like the Reapers. The use of BT bodies is inspired as is the use of spawn wing bits. I can't identify the heads though.

The rust looks good. I'm thinking of going a bit more rusty with some of my PMs, never seem to get to the painting bit though.

The tough thing when commenting Nurgle painting is whatever you should say "nice" or "ugly" painting if you get my point... It's great painting but the Nurgle itself is disgusting hehe, you do well in capturing that feeling on your models, the rust effect helps a lot. The Reapers is a very cool idea and they sure look nice aswell. Keep up the good work.

My ForgeWorld Death Guard troops. The guns aren't glued in place yet, nor have the backpacks been attached. Those will be added after painting. I did these without using greenstuff on the plastic parts. Instead I wanted to make the armor corroded more in line with the FW bits. I drilled random holes of various sizes and distressed them with an exacto knife and then added tiny holes with a push pin. It turned out pretty well even though it was much more time consuming than greenstuff would've been.

It's been awhile. I almost let the whole month of June slip by without an update. I just couldn't let that happen. So I've been hard at work all week painting a few characters. The daemon prince got a new head not too long ago and I built a Sorcerer in Terminator armor based of the Typhus model. The head is from the WFB Dark Emissary with the horns cut off.

The Sorcerer:

I'm extremely happy with how the Daemon Prince turned out. I got my hands on a bunch of the new washes and found that Devlan Mud was the perfect color to use for my technique for painting bones. I also used some washes on the arm wound and pustules and inflamed skin around them. I had so much fun painting this guy I think I want to do another.
