View Full Version : equipment

I was just wondering about Space marine chapters and more importantly, destroyed / severely depleted (Celestial lions) Chapters.

What happens to the equipment such as:
-Terminator suits
-Power armor
-All the specific chapter gear (Power scythes for the 'Scythes of the Emperor)
-space marine vehicles.

When the chapter is destroyed / severely depleted.
I mean when a chapter is destroyed / severely depleted it doesn't mean all their equipment magically disappears does it?

Thanks for taking the time to read my question. :)

I believe that the mechanicum comes along and cleans up anything that is useful and then make another chapter or gives it to other existing chapters

Are you sure because chapters such as the Blood Angels have chapter specific gear that can't go to every chapter?

it could be remade to fit to other chapters. for example a shoulder pad could be striped of all the paint and things that define it as the old chapter and repainted to suit other chapters.

I'm talking more like Exanguators/Red grail (sp?)
Or the specialised Growing tubes for the new marines, y'know the ones which pump you full of blood.

and do you have any sources?

Sorry i dont i just use common sense. I bet mechanicum will find a way to reuse equipment. they wont let it just rot away. They worship to the machines, man. cmon they must use it again there should be no question bout it. they could alter it someway.

Well, chapters usually only have lots of equipment to be distributed when they have had their fundament throughly prodded with daemon/xenos hoof/claws. I'd guess a lot of the equipment is destroyed by battle/looted. I'd also imagine that much of the equipment might just be returned by the serfs to the chapter fortress and preserved until something is decided - like refounding a chapter.

Thats a good point.

besides i don't think any marine chapter would look kindly towards the tech adepts who loot the corpses of their fallen bretheren.
i would think the chapter would try to recover as much of the lost equipment as possible and store it/repair it for later use.

but if the chapter is destroyed then offcourse their equipment is fair game.

Well, I've got an ork wearing the breastplate from a chaos beakie, one of my shapers managed to nick the shoulder pad off a marine sergeant, Some stormtroopers stole a rhino before they got offworld during an inquisition purge, and most of my Big Shootas started life as some sort of heavy bolter.

That said, I would imagine that if the chapter is damaged beyond it's ability to reinforce itself the surviving brothers along with the Adeptus Mechanicus would likely retrieve such gear as could be recovered and store it in a safe place until it is called upon to be used again. The Adeptus Mechanicus most likely would not scavenge armor suits to assemble new equipment, feeling as they do that each suit has it's own distinct spirit. I would expect that irreparably damaged equipment and chapter specific equipment would be interred in Imperial Shrines or given to successor chapters as holy relics. Alternately, any force capable of destroying a Marine chapter would likely cause so much damage that their could, conceivably, be nothing left to ecover.

When a chapter is heavily depleted, equipment doesn't go away. Heck, a lot of chapters have more special named macguffins than they have Marines anyway, so it's not like the balance of power has shifted much. O'course, if all their armories and fortress monasteries have been annihilated and paved over, then you've got wee bit of a problem.... It's not until the chapter is dead and gone that the vultures swoop in. But then, given how remote some chapters are, there's probably going to be only mild peckings at it for some time before some other chapter is charged with a crusade to recover what they can.

While the chapter is still alive, armored bits will be scavenged for stop-gap repairs until the Armory can manufacture replacements, though. It's a bit comforting to know that your gauntlet protected a beloved battle brother past the point of death, for example.

I'm sure if they are a successor chapter then the parent chapter would lend a hand in resupplying their gear. Eg, if the Crimson Fists needed more gear then the Impy Fists would donate anything spare.

If it's a first founding chapter though I don't really know. Maybe they just pull it out their a$$?

well as i see it theres a few things that need to be cleared up.

are you talking about a chapter destroyed far away from there fleet/home world?

are you talking about a chapter thats wiped out so that none remain?

who destroyed this chapter?

reasons im asking this can affect wether the equipment is recovered or not.

an example would be the Emperors sythes who inc there home world was destroyed by the Nids, the equipment etc would have been eaten and rendered down into usable organic materials.

Orks on the other hand would loot as much as possible, and i can see the same applied to CSM too.

i dont think there is any 'fluff' that im aware of that says exactly what happens to s destroyed chpaters stuff wether thats personal equipment or the chapter stuff ( IE there gene tanks, chapter sepcific stuff etc )

its possible that other new fledgeling chapters get some of the stuff, other stuff may be stock piled and some maybe sent off to other forces currently on campaign.

If the chapter is destroyed or so badly reduced and no one knows of it their stocks may sit in an abandoned or minimally crewed fortress while waiting for someone to notice they have not gotten back from their crusade/mission to clense/expidition to colonise, etc. Most likely it is just looted by the victor or placed in reserve. If no one knows it sits in the fortress to be discovered again. Chapter specific Items I agree thay would be given over to successor or the original as holy relics or kept in a shrine of some sort. Remember all vehicles are considered to have a spirit and can't just be given to anybody with a fresh coat of paint. Takes time and all the tech-magio mumbo-jumbo to get it off to war again.
