View Full Version : IG, Tau, DA, and whatever else I manage to get my grubby hands on...

It is fairly obvious that I need some sort of daily kick in the nads to actually get painting, so I have decided to start a log to, perhaps, get somebody to provide the afforementioned "encouragement". :)
First a little introduction: I have been playing Warhammer for a few years, but I only started 40k last year, around august-ish.
I walked into my local shop, and decided to start an elite army with a low model count so I could focus a lot on the individual models, and make it a bit cheaper to collect.
An hour later I left the shop with the Cadian battleforce, a box of guard, and the realisation that something might have gone slightly wrong with my decision-making process.
Anyway, who cares? I've got tanks. Of course, I then stalled painting it.
Then, a friend sold me his old DA army, I expanded it, and bought the Tau Megaforce.
And now, I paint everything. At least, I hope so.

First, a couple pics to show you where I am, painting-level wise:
(this is also my first attempt at NMM, so go gentle on me... )

Actually, I would like some comments and ideas on the banner. I would like to make it look more gothic, but I'm not sure how...

Anyways, my guard army:
I have, at long last, actually made a 400 pts combat patrol force, and intend to paint it up for starters. I'm just not sure about the scheme. I want something that looks pratical and camo-y, but I think this might be too dark.
Also, I have decided to make it the army carapace armoured, so the grunts will have armour like the guy on the right. I'd appreciate any feedback and comments on these guys..

Fantastic Guardsmen! The painting on the Kasrkin Serg and the greenstuffing on the regular joe is inspiring to say the least! This blog looks like it'll be a good one!

04-12-2007, 21:10
I think your NMM has turned out really well, well done!
The robes on your banner bearer are pretty sweet too

05-12-2007, 20:51
Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.
I've actually been working today, looks like this log thing might have been a good idea...
Firstly, I've decided to make the carapace armoured guy a plasma gunner.
And rear:
I'd like some feedback on the converted plasma rifle, is it ok? The guitar wire will go into his backpack, but so far he is still just blue-tacked together, so I can paint him more easily. I just coudn't face have ony one pose for my plasma gunners, the one GW makes is definitively NOT my favorite model.
Also, I got a bit further on one of his buddies. They'll be in my Hardened Veterans squad.
And now, of course, I realise that I still need to do some gloves for him. His head is also bluetacked on, it'll be lowered slightly.

Any thoughts or comments?

So now I need to bash up a sarge for the squad, another plasma gunner, a vox man, a missile launcher and 2 more lasgunners. Then its on to my armoured fist squad, and the two sentinels, and my combat patrol should be done!
Then, of course, I have another 11 marines, 2500 points of empire, and an entire Tau megaforce around that also need building/converting and painting. Gah!
At least I won't get bored. :)

maybe the guy needs a backpack?
looks very good to me though:)

Everything looks good. Your NMM is very good. I can't do it to save my life.:D

I like the different poses on your guardsmen, they will look great when finished. Your DA look good too. For the banner maybe shade the creases a darker brown? It would make the banner darker which in turn might make it look more gothic-er.

Or maybe some black design would help.

I'm looking forward to seeing some Tau. :)

I love the conversions/green stuff on your IG. Keep going with them!

07-12-2007, 11:28
Thanks all, for the comments.
@Bram: I agree, the guy lying down might look better with a backpack of somesuch.
I am going to try and bash up somehting tonight, see if I can get it right.

In the meantime, I've painted the plasmagunner. It's my first try at source lightning, so I could use some criticism. Is the reflected light good enough? Should the blue be darker? All input appreciated.
By the way, the base is far from finished. When it's done, it should look like an overgrown battlefield.

@The Laughing God: I might be posting some Tau tonight, after I try making that backpack..

Again, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

09-12-2007, 08:09
I have just realised something: I actually have the models to build me a regular army, instead of a 400 pts combat patrol force! I just have to use grenadiers (which I wanted to do anyway)
But before I start making carapace for 20+ models, I'd like to know: Would you accept this as a grenadier? I don't really like to high-tech look of the regular kasrkin stormtroopers (for grenadiers, at least) , and wanted to go with a bit lower-tech approach, hence the canvas backpack.
Any takers?

And now, I really need to get moving if I am to open the pub in time... :)

09-12-2007, 08:18
looks goods so far

15-12-2007, 07:09
The last week or so have been kinda busy, what with this whole "christmas"thing and all, me having to work a lot and life generally being busy.
In other words, I haven't gotten as much done as i wanted to, but I have managed to get a sergeant together for the Hardened Vets, give the prone guy a bag and a beard, and begin work on another plasma gunner. The powerfist is the first sculpting I have done, excepting the armour on these guys, so I would really like some comments about that one. Everything is still blue-tacked together though, so some joints might seem weird.
So, without any further ado:
All feedback and comments appreciated!
And again, I need to get runnning and open the pub in time.

26-12-2007, 11:40
So, finally an update!
I haven't had that much time to paint and model for the last month, but I have managed to get something done.
First off, some Tau.
The plan is to have two 12 man units, and a small squad of pathfinders, converted from the Fire Warrior plastics. One of these is going to be running forward, taking ground, and the other in cover, crouching down and providing covering fire. (I know, it'll be a cold day in hell before the Tau charge towards someone, but that wont stop me modelling them. :p) The reason they are painted in the plain old codex scheme is that my friends nid's are in very dark desert colours, and I want these guys to fit in, but at the same time be very different. Hence, the light desert colours and white contrast.
The first model is kinda my colour-test model, and a minor conversion:
I also got the rest of the sprue done, but without any conversions:
The bases are obviously not done, but are on standby until I get some sand.
And, of course, started work on the model that sold me on the tau in the first place: The piranha.
Still very much PIP, and bluetacked together. When its done it''ll have white panelling and red sept markings, like the rest of the army.

26-12-2007, 11:53
Triplepost for the win! Or something like that anyway...
The update continues, as I've gotten the grenadier from an earlier post painted up: http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/TwoByFour/Grenadier.jpg
I still need to find them a symbol or something for their shoulderpads. Right now it's a toss-up between this:
and a shield-like motifwith company colours.
I would really appreciate any feedback or ideas on this.
I've been working on an army list as well, that might be in the next update.
Also, just for kicks I painted up an SoB I had lying around, just to play around with her armour: http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/TwoByFour/SoB.jpg
I know, her face looks awful, but I just painted her for the armour, so I probably won't be doing any more with her.
As allways, all and any comments are appreciated!

Very nice! I like your tau, and your Guardsmen are really good! The greenstuffing is nice; I can't imagine anyone not accepting them as grenadiers. The beards go a long way to making them look like veterans too! As for the shoulder pads, I like what you did on the sergeant, but it will be interesting to see what else you have in mind. In fact, I have only one small criticism, and that is about the guitar wire you used as tubes for the guns. It seems a little too long to me, as it looks like it will trip the troopers when they're running. Other than that, it's great, keep it up! I will definately pop in here for time to time! :)

26-12-2007, 13:40
Love your grenadiers, gives me a few more ideas on how I might be able to convert my own ones.

26-12-2007, 14:15
I love those two first picutres with the Dark Angel and The Commander (?)

Geat job, keep it up! =)

26-12-2007, 14:28

i think your Grenadiers look great, i can't see any one not letting you play with them, the Veterans look great also the extra's you have gave them will really make them stand out.

Your Tau look good thats giving me some ideas for a few i've got lying around.

keep up the good work

30-12-2007, 15:35
*EDIT* I changed the army list as per the suggestions from Crazy Ivan and Vengance. Thanks for the help!

Righto, there's just time for a mini-update before it's time for work!
First of all: thank you all for the comments, they keep me working!
Secondly, Crazy Ivan and I have started a small race to 1000 points, just to keep up the speed. If you haven't yet seen his vostroyans, it's about high time you did!
You'll find them and some good fluff for his army here: Crazy Ivans Vostroya regiment. (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97652)
Alternatively, if my posting-fu is weak today, you can scroll up a few posts, and use the link in his own sig.
Therefore, I have actually written me up an army list. I would really like any and all comments or recommendations for the list, as I am fairly clueless when it comes to writing them. Here goes:

Junior Officer
Honorifica Imperialis
Master Vox
Iron discipline
Points: 115

Anti-tank support squad
3x Lascannon
Points: 130

Fire support squad
3x Heavy Bolter
Points: 100

Grenadier squad:
8 Grenadiers
Grenade Launcher
Hull Heavy Bolter
Extra Armour
Points: 206

Grenadier Squad:
Excact copy of the above.
Points: 206

Hardened Veterans:
8 Veterans
Vet Sgt.
2x Plasma
Missile launcher
Power fist
Points: 163

Sentinel Squadron
1 Sentinel with Heavy Flamer

Sentinel Squadron
1 Sentinel with Heavy Flamer

Total: 1000 pts.

Thank you guys, that helped!
Now, with this safely away, I could focus on some infantry.
I've finished four gunners, or at least I thought so. After seeing the images, I can see some areas that I have missed. Nothing major, but it needs to be done before the undercoat. The guitar wires are going to be added after, and the arms are bluetacked on. The Sergeant for my vets are also in the picture, as he has been glued together now, and is ready for some paint.
The wire sticking up over the shoulder of the guy on the right is supposed to be an aerial for a short range vox in his belt. He'll be the second in command of his squad.
I also painted the prone vet:
Again, I see some areas that needs going over, but nothing major. The greenstuff on his neck, primarily.
That's more or less it for this time. Next update, early 2008! :D
And a happy new year to all of you!

Crazy Ivan
30-12-2007, 16:00
I really like that prone veteran, he's very characterfull!

About your list, I can't really say what to add, my list-writing skills are still somewhat underdeveloped :cries:, but I'd at least max out on the special weapons in the Grenadier Squads. Sentinels might be good, too; Catachan patterns are cheap, at least.

I see you are really speeding up! *Prepares to hurry back to the painting tables* Must. Not. Get. Behind! :D

30-12-2007, 17:24
@ TwoByFour

Firstly the prone Vet looks fantastic now he's painted, i can't wait to see what you come up with for the rest of the squad. :)

Secondly when writing list it depends what you are wanting your force to be some of the option in the codex are no Brainers and some are just not worth there points. So here goes

Would you not be better using a JO and Honorifica Imperialis as you get the same stats as a HSO but for 5 points cheeper ? ;)

If you're using the Vox network why are you using Vet Sgt's in you grenadier squads wouldn't it better with just a normal sgt as you'd save an extra 12 points. (I didn't notice any weapons for the sgt's in your Descriptions)

When i checked your Grenadier squads i added them up to 203 pts ?

This would leave you 96 points to fill, you could get two sentinels or a good RR squad for that.

These are only suggestions so its up to you.

If you would like i could write you a alternative list

06-01-2008, 10:41
And it's a new year! Strangely, it kinda feels like the old one...
Crazy Ivan, thanks for the comment! I'm looking forward to seeing more of The Firstborn as well. And thanks for the suggestions for the army list as well, they are in there now. Since one of my friends play tyranids, template weapons was a good suggestion!
Vengeance, thank you for the help with the army list, I appreciate it. As you can see, it has been amended. I would really like to see that alternative list, if the offer still stands - it's always good to get another perspective.
Anyways, I have been slightly lazy, and haven't gotten as much done as I would have liked.
I've painted up another 2 hellgunners and decided on a symbol for the regiment as well as finally finishing the base for my HW sergeant.
Firstly, a picture of everything I have managed to get together so far:
From left to right: Sergeant for my HW squad, a WIP hellgunner and plasmagunner, two PIP hellgunners, the prone vet, the four painted grenadiers, and a (very) WIP Voxman.
I would really like some help with the voxman, by the way. His right hand is going to be holding a mike for the radio and he will be yelling into it. I have no idea what he will be doing with his left hand, however. He can't hold his rifle, as the wire won't wrap around him.
The next thing I am likely to start is a sergeant for my grenadiers, and a heavy bolter team.
Also, I've decided on an regimental symbol:
The left (right in the picture) shows him to be a member of first squad, sixth platoon, and the right shoulderpad (left in the picture) shows his regiment's colours. The regimental colours are, by the way, fairly close to my old company colours from when I was in the army.
And now, for something completely different:
Yesterday I was helping my parents clear out the attic, when I found something a bit more intersting that the old lego and dusty books:
11 Space Wolf Blood Claws, a Sergeant w. Power Fist, and a techpriest (Ironpriest?) from an old trade. Now, a quick little question for all you Space Wolves players out there: Would it be possible to equip Blood Claws with anything but bolt pistols and chainswords? I might just be painting them up as a side project, I've always had a weakness for them. 'Sides, its kinda.. wrong.. to see them in DA colours. (the guy I bought them from used them as regular DA marines.)
As always, all comments are appreciated.
Anyways, enough talk, more painting! :)

12-01-2008, 21:47
Alright, time for a litte update before I go to bed.
I haven't been able to work on the army as much as I would have liked due to school, work and being ill, but there have been a bit of progress.
Firstly, I have managed to complete the vox-man for my Hardened Veterans:
And so, the squad numbers 3 men.
The first squad are now completely modelled:
Now that I see the photo, it's fairly obvious that the sergeants hellpistol is wonky, so that's a bit of work for tomorrow, then.
After that's done, I'll get cracking with some paint!
I have also been working a bit on a new Heavy Bolter, in an attempt to make it look like it is actually man-portable. I've never been able to understand how two man can move that huge lump of metal and move at the same pace as their buddies. And so, I came up with this:
Please ignore the ammobelt, it'll be removed and replaced with the one from the regular HB. It is basically a normal bolter with some sprue attached to the front.
It is vaguely inspired by the MG42, or the M66 LMG, as it's designated in the danish army. Besides being an awesome looking gun, it really works.. Take it from me, I know. ;)
It does, however, look a bit weedy, doesn't it? I would hugely appreciate any ideas on how to butch it up a bit.
And, as always, thank you for looking and commenting.

12-01-2008, 22:12
Ooh... I love that heavy bolter! It would be so fitting for my drop troopers. Can I borrow the design? :)

Crazy Ivan
13-01-2008, 12:00
Very nice! I like how you solved the problem of the vox-man's hand, now he looks like he's frantically trying to get through to whoever's on the other end of the line... very dynamic! I also really like the posing of the Grenadiers, can't wait to see them painted.

That HB does look more practical then the normal one! I wouldn't really know how to make it look more 'bulky', but maybe if you use the ammo-cases next to it, or a large amount of discarded bolt casings next to it? Then it'll seem quite 'killy' at least... :D

13-01-2008, 16:06
Looks good! i like the HB conversion, looks much better. If you want to make it more heavy bolter-ish, i'd add the bolter sights.

13-01-2008, 16:09
I love the guardsman that is in the prone position. :D

13-01-2008, 17:03
Some good looking stuff dude.

15-01-2008, 20:04
Thanks for your comments, everyone!

@IceWind: Borrow away mate, it's just a regular bolter with two pieces of sprue stuck to the front and trimmed down. Fairly simple, really.

@Crazy Ivan: Thanks man! "This is squad alpha, we need more cookies! Repeat, more chocolate chip reinforcements!" On a more serious note, it was actually you who inspired the vox-man in a way. I was reading the fluff for your Vostroyans (the part where they are under fire from their own mortars), and started imagining how the vox-man must have been looking when he heard the reply from HQ. "You are shelling WHAT coordinate?!" So I'm glad you like it!
I'm definintively going to do the spent casings, and I might just have a sneaky plan for it in my head...
Looking forward to seeing more vostroyans (and more fluff that can inspire me) in your log!

@3vilX: Thank you! I might try that, sounds like a good idea!

@dr.oetk3r: Thanks, he's a favorite of mine too. Kinda proud of him. :)

@konrad: Thanks!

And so, we come to the part of the post where I update the log!
The first squad have actually been completed, now only lacking bases, wires and a dullcoat! Here's a pic for you:
Not the best picture, I'm afraid, but it'll have to do until I get a better setup.
I also took a closeup of the sergeant, voxman and grenadelauncher, here:
I'm pretty happy with how the grenadelauncher turned out, I don't really like the way it's usually held.
I doubt if you can see it, but the voxman have gotten a mike modelled on his chest, so he can talk without that fancy-looking helmet, which I don't really like either. ;)
Now that I see the pictures, I might have to go back and fix the faces. The GL-guy looks like he has a cute little smile (not the look I was going for!),and the vox-man looks angry like hell. (better, but still...)
Also, I have an idea for my bases: I was considering a snowy grassland. Like the one the HB stands on in the last post. Any ideas, recommendations or tips? I'm not really the worlds greatest baser...

Again, thank you all for taking the time to comment in the log, it keeps me focussed!

Next up: Probably their ride... The world oldest and most mis-treated chimera!
See you in a few days!

16-01-2008, 23:43
nice guard mate, especially like the buzz cut hairstyle on the sergent, very arnie :D

17-01-2008, 00:29
Everything looks great I especially like the plasma gunner. Is that backpack part of a bolter?

Crazy Ivan
17-01-2008, 12:00
Wow, ask and ye shall receive! Again very nice! I totally agree on the 'Arnie' comment. :D

Nice to be of inspiration! :) I'm working on it, by the way...

24-01-2008, 05:28
Update time once again!

@MrDee and Crazy Ivan, thanks! I'm hoping the Arnie haircut can help him out a bit in CC, guardsmen can use all the help they can get! :D

@Aryakas: Thanks, and yep, that is a bolter cut up in various ways. Pretty easy to make, too.

Alright, time for the actual update:
I know I said that I would work on the chimeras the last time, but they are in an awful condition. I have decided to make a small order from forgeworld, to get some new rear doors for them and maybe some trackguards. This will, however, have to wait until after the first, when I'll be slightly less poor.
The squad have been based, and gotten their wires:
Somewhat unfortunately, though, they are no longer a squad. I realised that I had nine guardsmen in running poses and nine in static, and decided to make one squad advancing and the other holding ground.
Therefore, the five guys on the left are now half of first squad, and the ones on the left second squad.

Now, even though I've been slightly lazy, I did finish my piranha for the Tau:
I don't know what it is with this model, but I love it. It pratically convinced me to buy the megaforce by itself. There's just something about the lines...
The weapons have, of course, been magnetized so I can swap between fusion blaster and burst cannon goodness.

I decided to line everything up yesterday and see how much I still had to do. This was, of course, a colossal mistake as I am now slightly overawed by it.
But on the plus side, I got a picture of everything I need to do, and you can all see my workspace.

Thats pretty much it for today, hope you like!

24-01-2008, 08:23
That’s indeed some impressive GS work! Keep the good work up, and I am looking forward to next update.

24-01-2008, 12:07
I'm liking the guard TBH. The models of all the armies have great posing and basing (the firewarrior hiding behind the rock is great) and your greenstuff use level is great. Keep it up plz!

30-01-2008, 05:10
Thanks for the comments!

This is probably the last update for a while, as I am moving this friday and won't have an internet connection for a while. Not that I would have time to use it if I had one.
I haven't really been doing anything special for the guard, been making backpacks, heavy bolters and random bits of armour. Nothing groundbreaking, and dreadfully boring to look at, I'm afraid. Still, it has to be done!
I was intending to use the hasslefree heads for some of my veterans, to give them a more irregular look. However, they appear to be a bit on the small side..

Also, I've just given in and bought myself a terminator squad for my DA, even though I had promised myself not to buy anything before I had at least the Tau painted to 500 pts.. Oh well.
This, however, means that it is time to paint bone. Something I loathe after doing the robes on the sergeants.
I fiddled with the idea, and decided on a new approach:
(This is just a test model I had lying around.)
What do you think? The actual termies will, of course, be more carefully painted.

11-02-2008, 04:18
I'm loving the LMG style heavy bolter... and the green stuff skills are making me envious, do you have any special tricks or tools you use?

So, finally an update!
I haven't had that much time to paint and model for the last month, but I have managed to get something done.

i have one thing to say i love that fire warrior hiding behind the rock!:D good work can wait to see more!!!!!!

14-02-2008, 13:43
Alright, break's over! Time to get working.

Thank you all for the commments, they are much appreciated.
@Zachariah: I use a scalpel and my hands, that's pretty much it. I've got a clay shaper around here somewhere, but I can't find it. Just a matter of getting some practice. ;)

Now, for some new guys:
The first squad have been completed, or at least the modelling have:
There's also a closeup of the three new guys, here:
I have to admit, I'm fairly pleased with the vox-guy. Now that I see them on the screen though, I notice that I have to make the wires a bit more droopy. They look too stiff and rigid right now.
The second squad still needs 4 more guys, but at least their sergeant have been built.
In case you can't tell, that's a grenade he's holding in his left hand.
Right, that's about it - I've been busy with this whole moving thing.
Next up should be some deathwing terminators - I have a game (!) on the 23. , and I want these guys to join in.
I'll go work on them now, in fact.

14-02-2008, 14:29
Also, I've just given in and bought myself a terminator squad for my DA, even though I had promised myself not to buy anything before I had at least the Tau painted to 500 pts.. Oh well.

Ooo... Subscribed

Using the Vomit/Bubonic Brown undercoat I see. I prefer the Graveyard earth base myself.. Other than neatness it looks really good.

& paint the Blood Claws up and use them (rules wise) as a Rhino based DA assault squad.

V---- My termies are mostly at Ammobunker

Crazy Ivan
14-02-2008, 15:12
Still going strong, I see! Again some very nice conversions. Is that new sergeant's head a Catachan's with the 'rambo' bandana cut off? Very dynamic pose!

Now, I must really find some time for painting too... :p

14-02-2008, 19:04
Actually, Dean, that's not a bubonic brown undercoat...
The models are simply undercoated in white, given a wash of GWs old brown wash (diluted about 50 % with water), given a layer of thinned bleached bone, and then highlighted. Four layers, and that's it. I think I might just up it to six or seven for minis I am actually going to use, but hey... :) I tried the black undercoat, bestial brown and then countless layers of bleached bone on the robes for the sergeants, and it takes forever. This way, I should be able to complete a couple of termies every day.
I've taken a quick look at your ammobunker log, and it looks very nice indeed!

@ Crazy Ivan: You most certainly do! I'm not sure what I'm looking forward to most, the models or the fluff, but either way I'm an impatient man... :D
I'm looking forward to seeing some vossies!

Sorry for the progress free post, I'll go get started on the first termie coat now.. :)

15-02-2008, 00:23
Which bits did you use to make that freakishly awesome heavy bolter?

09-03-2008, 20:29
Alright, slightly delayed update. And by slightly delayed, I mean ye gods, I've been lazy. I had a period where I got nothing done at all for a couple of weeks, but thankfully that's over now. I hope.
However, there have been actual progress!
First off, Tves, the heavy bolter is just a regular bolter with two pieces of sprue glued to the tip with plastic cement, then trimmed and the barrel reattached. Real simple.
I've managed to gs the armour on all but one of the grenadiers, but I haven't taken any pictures of those - they are pretty standard.
I've also been working on my assault terminator squad, and one of them are ready for display.
Yep, I magnetized the arms. I seem to be having an urge to magnetize everything these days, it's just so pratical. Besides, I had NO idea how to equip these guys. As for the shoulderpads, I'm still waiting for FW send them, as well as the stuff for the chimeras.
Earlier today I painted up some of the hardened vets, didn't take half as long as I had expected.
For some reason though, I'm just not very pleased with these guys. Dunno why, maybe I'll be able to se what's wrong tomorrow.
Now, a few days ago, I was looking through my stuff when I found my old regimental beret mark from when I was in the army, and it occurred to me that I still had a doctrine that I hadn't used... And then I found out that roughriders get carapace as well when you take that doctrine. That settled the deal. Pony pilots, here I come! :)
I'd like your thoughts on this, as I'm not really sure about the armor - I'm going for a look not unlike the grenadiers. In other words, modern armour.
(On the right is my old beret mark. The inscription reads "In Actis Esto Volucris - Be swift in action, the motto for the Guard Hussars Regiment.)
The plan is to have an painted aquila on the front armour, and lots of packs and stowage on the rear of the horse.
Also, if any of you have any thoughts on how to equip a 5-man squad of roughriders, I'd be happy to listen.
That's it for this time, any and all comments are appreciated.

That Terminator is coming along nicely! The vets are looking good too, I think. The horse has me really interested! Do you intend to make the Riders themselves look like your other troopers?

Like Crazy Ivan, i am quite intruiged to see what is going to happen with these guys :)

The GSing looks alot better then i could do :D

I've always wanted to make a unit of tank busting rough riders... but, I don't know if they'd be worth having... which makes Zac sad. You'll prolly just have to take RR's with lances to make them worth the effort... :(

Thank you all for the replies, muchly appreciated!

@ Crazy Ivan and Death Korp: Actually, I've been speculating a bit about that. Now, I am making five roughriders. I only have 4 cadian torsos and legs left, so I am toying with the idea of making them in greatcoats. This way, I can use the pistolier torsos and some leftover arms.
What do you think of this?:
I still need to do some detailing, and gve him one of those blankets that the valhallans have across their chests.
The other option is, of course, to toss it all overboard and go buy a box of cadians.
If I decide to make them valhallans, I might be giving them these heads:
I hope you guys can help me, I really don't know what to do here.
No matter what I do, though, they will have hunting lances in one form or another. I just don't know how many to take, if special weapons are a good idea, if I'm going to replace the CCWs or the pistols... Yeah, I'm a bit confused. :)

@Zac: As far as I have head, RRs can be quite good. I am certainly looking forward to finding out!

Oh, and Death Korp, don't be too apprehesive about greenstuff - 5 months ago I could just about manage to fill a gap. It's amazing what a little practice can do...

Looking forward to hearing your opinions!

Actually I think the idea of Valhallan RR's and the work you've done with the Greenstuff would make it a shame not to make them! ;) For background, simply make them a 'combined force'. I believe Rough Riders are usually from their own regiments anyway, only despatched to other Regiments as needed. So you'd have no problems fitting them in.

As for the special weapons, I believe once you take hunting lances, all the RR's in a unit must have them, thus prohibiting the use of other armaments... But I may be wrong, I'm a bit hazy on this. As for CCW's or laspistols, I don't really know. There might be a use in either, I guess.

Wow, what a layer of dust in here... Yeah, I've been lazy, but it's time to change that!

Actually, I haven't been lazy per se, but every time I wanted to update, something has gotten in the way: Photobucket hating me, my girlfriend using the comp, my internet connection being too slow... But I digress. On to the models!

The rough rider squad have been postponed for the time being, until the first 1000 points of the army are complete. I have, however, painted up four more of the guys: A sergeant, a plasmagunner, a grenadelauncher and a standard grenadier.

I think I might just do some battledamage on these guys. Also, I might have to do something about the OSL on the plasmagunner.

This isn't all the progress on the grenadiers, though - I've completed modelling them all, and undercoated the last three guys. They are pretty standard though, so I didn't bother with pictures - I figure that you guys probably know what they look like by now.

I've also made a spotter for the ML team in the hardened veteran squad:
If the head looks odd, it's probably because it's bluetacked on, or because I botched the sculpting - pick your favorite explanation.

Now, if only that plastic card would get here, I could get working on their rides.

That's pretty much it for the guard, but I have been working on my marines, too.
Remember that terminator squad from earlier? The one where I said I would probably be able to paint a termie a day?
This is the current status:
Yeah, not exactly impressive. There is progress, though.

Also, an extra combat squad - because you can never have too many marines.
More in the next post!

And, of course, Tau:
I've decided to change my colour scheme to this:
Not a huge change, but enough to make it far faster and easier to paint them.

Of course, they need a commander as well:

Gods, but this thing was a nightmare to assemble. I don't think I have ever seen a plastic model with gaps this size. It was almost as bad as the steamtank!
Of course, then I had to go and put magnets in him - there is one in each arm and shoulder, and in every weapon. So yeah, it may not look like it, but at this point I've already spent more than 15 hours on this model.

So that's it for this time, and I'll try to update a bit more regularly from now on.

*edit - somehow, that last picture aren't working for me - photobucket seems to stall. Anyone else have this problem?

I like the guard scheme, its hard to get monochromatic to work but you did it quite well.

Hey TwoByFour, good to see the race is still on! I've been rather forum-lazy lately, so it took me some time to reply...

Nices Termies. Don't remember if I've mentioned before, but the white is really smooth!

The Grenadiers are looking good, as usual! I'm most interested in the source lighting on the Plasma Gunner; I think it look quite good on his right arm and chin, although somehow his shoulder pad looks a little off. Don't know exactly why though... By the way, is that a cap on the Hardened Veteran?

Keep it up!

The rough rider squad have been postponed for the time being, until the first 1000 points of the army are complete.
Must. Paint. Minis. :chrome:

@ Triggerdog: Cheers man!

@ Crazy Ivan: Oh, the race is definitively on! :D

The termies aren't my worst pieces, but gods, they take long to paint... I really should be focusing on the guard more. Of course, now Flames Of War have stolen a lot of my time as well! That really is a fun game..
And yeah, I know about the OSL on the shoulderpad. I'm going to have to look at it later... The hardened vet do indeed have a cap, I should have him finished later this week for posting - he isn't much to look at right now, I'm afraid. :)

And yes, you should be painting! It's been a while since I've had yostroyan goodness on my screen...

Now, on to the (mini)update, ten minutes before I run off to work (I really should plan better) :

I need some advice here, namely:
Does he look alright? Do any of you have any tips on making an ammo-feed? I really want the gun to be fed from the left... Do the bipod look ok?

And also, a lascannon I've been looking at:
Any thoughts?
I'm considering lowering the mounting to something like a turntable instead of the tripod, to make it more like a real anti-tank cannon.

There might be a smallish update with tau later, but I simply don't have the time right now.

Thank you all for your time!

First off, Subscribed.
Second off, (not that I do conversions at all) but I think the thing that seems most off about the HB guy is that his legs are straight out behind him. Reference the back shot of the other prone guy in post #11 for something that might look more natural.

16-05-2008, 18:56
you...you...you made a beard for a...guardsmen . Your my hero now. That model really looks awsome, really love your work this far, if you keep it up i think this will be one of the best project logs on this site.

18-05-2008, 20:06
Asi, thanks for the compliment, it's good to know people like what I do. :)
And thanks for the tip, I think you are right. Unfortunately, I pinned this guy pretty solidly, and I can't really fix the leg without pretty much starting over on him - and I'm just too damn lazy! I will, however, keep it in mind on the next ones, I plan to have a fair few prone guardsmen in the force.
Tha annoying thing is that that is actually the "correct" firing position for the MG I based my HBs on, and yet the legs still look wrong. :D

@Duckdude, thanks! There's going to be a lot more bearded guardsmen in this force - The codex might be underpowered, but that doesn't mean that the army can't be beardy!
(Yes, my humor sucks. But it's a quarter past ten in the evening, and it's been a long day, so bear with me, ok?) ;)
Thanks for all the praise, however unwarranted I feel it is - Warseer is home to a lot of VERY good guardarmies.

And now, for a (somewhat crappy) pic, because it wouldn't be an update without one:
Ever so slow progress on my Tau. I wonder if they are ever going to be finished... Still, all comments and criticism (sp? It's late here...) are appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

Alright, update time!

It's been a while, since I have just gotten a new job which takes up quite a lot of my time. That, and Flames of War...

Still, there has been a bit of progress.
The lascannon have gotten a cruciform platform:
Any thoughts?
I know it looks a bit droopy now, that'll be corrected before i glue it all together.
The initial plan is to have the gunner crouched behind the gun, and a spotter lying prone beside it.

Also, I figured that the army should have an objective marker, and since I had two cadians spare...
Any thoughts are appreciated here, as I am not at all sure about their anatomy/posing, or the basic idea for that matter. The standard bearer will be holding a chainsword in his left hand when he is done, and the guy lying on his back will be holding a gun, trying to keep the enemy at bay. They'll also have a fair bit of battledamage on the armour.
The last half of the update will follow in the next post!

14-06-2008, 23:06
And here is the last half of the update!

I was looking around here on Warseer the other day when i came across Doghouse's fantastic Mantis Warrior log. For those of you who haven't seen it, he's building an army out of converted BfM marines, and making them look good too.
So, since I had a couple of these lying around I decided to try the same.
I intend to make 6 marines, and they'll be a combat squad with two special weapons, so I don't have to field the same configuration each time. I'll paint them up as one of the successor chapters of the dark angels, since they are all working so close together.
They will, of course, just be another tactical squad in game terms.
Here's the sergeant and one of the bolter guys:

And two more marines, a flamer and another bolter. Ignore the horrible paintjob if you can, I was just testing something new that didn't work out.
I might do something more with the flamer guy, he looks a bit plain.

That's pretty much it for this time, next update will, hopefully, be sometime soon.
As always, your comments and criticism are appreciated.

14-06-2008, 23:22
I love the objective marker, give the lying bloke a pistol and the Defiance of the guard is well and truely represented

15-06-2008, 00:20
well executed, on the marker i think having the banner draped over the rock might look interesting
