View Full Version : Superstition Silliness

I was just curious, does anyone have any rituals/superstitions when it comes to playing or their dice?

For me, when I'm rolling there's the "Phrase That Shall Not Be Uttered!" which of course is "Anything but a 1." Seems like it pisses off the Dice Gawds.

All i ever pray for is some luck, and more often than not it never gets answered

When rolling to hit and wound, I refuse to re-roll the dice that successfully hit as they are used up for the wound rolls. It seems to work so far.

Try to be more precise in your request ;)

Bad luck is still 'luck' after all

I always use red dice if possible, and if I can I only use ones which are sitting with the number 6 facing up. Works almost all the time.

I've tried the opposite, and that works okay for me too! Kinda like you're following the dices' paths through the probability matrix. Or something.

EDIT: Yay, 600 posts.

I have a swirly black die I always use when rolling for deployment and first turn, it never fails.

Unfortunately, I have another die that looks just like it that does the exact opposite :cries:

I rattle my dice in my hands, allways. To not rattle the dice is unthinkable.

During 2nd edition my group used to play in my friends garage where we could drink and smoke. We would smoke the dice for extra important must not fail rolls...essentially we'd cup the dice in our hands, say a prayer, and exhale smoke into it our hands. It seems silly now, but we were in our early twenties back then. Also, I occasionally use my wife's sissy looking pink swirly dice for make or break rolls. They have become known as the pink dice of death.

Same here - even in my army list, nowhere is the phrase ____ile launchers written

Always have been a Chaos player and, randomly, got a Yatzee set for Christmas in the early/mid 90s. The 5 "Black Dice" from that have become somewhat of a legend in my local gaming group back home, brought them along as a kid on the basis of Chaos=Evil, Evil=Black. (ah to be a kid again!) But happened to work, first roll came out with three sixes! ;)

Kind of childish thing that you forever look back on and laugh at when older as it becomes ingrained as an in-joke with your group of childhood friends in a way it just doesn't as one get's on in years. (Running joke at the time, me with the nickname "evil genius", playing Chaos, gettting 6166 as my exam number and those dice)

Still to this day much mock wailing and laughter when I bring them out for an important roll, you never recall the fact they're normal dice and fail most times but when five sixes come up again..... *laughs* Wouldn't trade them for all the fancy looking cheesex etc. dice in the world. :)

Or better yet, call them Hittile Launchers. :p

I have a new set of purple dice (intended for my Everblight force for Hordes) but they're now used in all my games. Everytime a good roll appears I say "Lord Everblight is pleased with the result".

Seems to work, as the the spawn of Toruk seems to favour me. ;)

I always use my own dice NO MATTER WHAT!
My yellow lovelies dont often fail me!

I also have a habit of rolling dice of a similar size as the unit, IE nurglings use my diddy dice, and bigger models use the brass dice.

And the Salute 2k7 dice is never used... fixed to a 1 it would seem!

I always drink a beer just after deployment, but before things get moving.
Two beers if the Ruth is playing.

Shout ''BOOM, HEADSHOT!'', whenever firing sniper weapons. Allways gives a higher chance of ap1 hits with Eldar rifles. We think....hope.

Have to change dice every time I roll in Bloodbowl. Don't care about any other game - but Bloodbowl requires me to change my dice for every roll!

What? You smokers...did you actually think the dice would enjoy being subjected to passive smoking like that? Have you ever seen them smoke - well, have you?

Well, I can tell you that smoke smells like crap - and your dice will never forgive.

For GW games, I'm using GW dice, majorly using the Blacks, the Whites for Leadership tests, the Reds only if I need that many, again Blacks when it counts.

For DBA, where you need a single die, I use a set of two, dicing for a high roller and a low roller before a game, and using the high roller for when I need high, the other for when I need low during game setup. During the game I use them alternately, so not to deplete the good numbers  And when one of them rolls a '1', I instantly change...

It's not superstition, more of a ... ritual - honestly ... :p

When I'm rolling an important roll on 2d6 e.g. a break test I always roll one dice at a time to really build the tension...

Never, ever mix the dice styles when rolling a set of dice, unless necessary due to the importance of differentiating rolls eg. one lascannon and three missile launchers in a Devastator squad.

The sole exception is that if it's not possible to make the roll with identical dice, you must instead have all the dice different.

I don't do this, but I know a couple people that do. This only works in games where you don't have to roll a lot of dice at once (such as some of the Specialist Games).

Alright, so you have 3 dice in your hand. 2 of them will be one color and one of them will be a different color. Everytime you need to roll for something, you roll all of the dice on the table. If you only needed to roll one dice, then the different color dice counts. If you needed 2 dice, then the 2 same colored dice are the ones that count. If you need to roll 3 dice, than obviously they all count.

This is known as "the technique" and is supposed to give you good rolls everytime. As far as I can tell it makes no difference and can just get annoying after a while.

That is sooo queer in my circle of gamers :D we don't roll like girls, we are men playing manly games and roll as many dice are required at once!

Good luck Doraz tho.

When we're playing Blood Bowl a prayer to Nuffles' hairy balls always erupts from my buddys mouth at one time or another. I have no clue why but it cracks everyone up everytime. The only superstition I have is I hate having different colored dice so I use all the same colored dice for all my rolls, just roll them differently (e.g. PP then Bolters, etc.)

When picking up dice to roll, I'll only pick up dice that have are on a 6 or 5 in the pile. They just seem to want to roll well.

The night before a battle I always cut my finger nails and more times than not I win.

I even cut them the night before my driving test and I passed that, so there you go, definitive proof that cutting your nails the night before something you hope to do well at will work for you.;)

I no longer can use my own dice. I seem to drain the luck from them after a while. a year and a half, 1 battle a week, and I never won first turn. Adapted my strategies to going second, and hey presto, I start to win 1st occasionally.

Never use the same dice twice. If it hit, it sure as hell won't wound. Keep 'em fresh!

my superstitions are simple

1: never ever EVER use GW dice
2: never roll already rolled dice until you use every dice up
3: never say "anything but a..." (whatever number)
