View Full Version : Curious, has anyone ever done a Scottish themed army?

So, I was thinking. People come up with some utterly spectacular ideas for armies - everything from feral-world Medieval Guard to Aztec themed Space Marines and just about anything else you could think of...

But one thing I've never seen, possibly just out of bad luck on my part - is an army with bagpipes and tartan. So I'm curious: Has anyone tried a highland Scots themed army before? If so, any pics to share?

This is purely a curiosity on my part really, nothing I plan on doing myself, but something I think could be kinda cool if someone's done it well.

For Fantasy, in White Dwarf a while back (during the time of Storm Of Chaos) and the release of the new Chaos Warriors they showed a unit dressed up in tartan (speaking of which, does anyone know when the rumoured Citadel Tartan paint comes out?)

But never seen anything done for 40K. Not sure it really fits with the themes.
That said, it does suit the clan-type nature of the Orks, the similar system of Marines, and so on, so I'd be suprised if there *wasn't* a Sctos-themed army out there.

Yes; but it was several years ago (~2000?). Noise Marines jokes aside I think army ended up going with a Space Wolf ruleset due to the Scots' unruly reputations!

Yes someone did Tartan guard, problem is they are so hard to paint!

Gaunts Ghosts (i.e. the Tanith Guardsmen) are supposed to be based on Scottish warriors. Milo plays his pipes into battle in a very bagpipe reminiscent way, and several of the names (i.e. Mkoll) sound quite Scottish.

I've seen Scottish night goblins, complete with bagpipe musicians. Not a whole army though...

well i was suprised by myself that i still could find that WD among my pile of WDs :D....but good and original armies stick in the back of your head....and you dont see much scottish marines so it doesnt requires much thinking of your memory...now if only they would allow us to photocopy pictures from the WD :(

old stuff should be made PA....like chapter aproved and index astartes....it was worth buying a WD just to read those two things.....and a good battle report....

For my fantasy Chaos army I sculpted kilts and did tartan on my marauders. I gave great weapons in every other rank with the rank behind throwing the blades up over their shoulders like claymores.
Painting tartan was a drag and hard to get right (when you're at my standard of painting anyway:()

It's being held up because they're not sure whether to put primer on underneath. :D

Yes someone has made a scottish theamed army, me. My IG army (the 1st caedonian highlanders) has kilts, bagpipes, a claymore whelding HSO and even galic tank names! I have taken them to the UKGT the last 4 years (finishing 61st last year) and I will try to post some pic soon.

I am collecting miniatures for a Fantasy Scotish Dwarf Army! Still WIP and low priority. Have more than half of them:

Trollslayers plus Doomseekers plus Slayer King plus Malakai Makaison's Goblin Hewer from GW.
1st standard infantry: Westwind Dwarf Wars Highland Dwarf Infantry
2nd standard infantry: Westwind Dwarf Wars Dwarf Shaven Infantry
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=1_4&sort=2a&page=2
(they have nice cavalry and mounted heroes, but alas ... no rules for them:()
Heroes: Gamezone
Thunderers: Gamezone (kilts and tammies!)
Crossbow Unit: Westwind Dwarf Wars Zahakatpunkt Dwarfs Infantry Archers (well, painting Tartan helps fitting them in)
Longbeards: Gamezone
Miners: Gamezone (not scotish, but must have! well, perhaps Welsh ;))

Ironbreakers: Westwind Dwarf Wars Imperial Dwarfs (-> Roman Hadrians Wall forces ;))

If you pop over to Dysartes and check out this link you can see some of Tom's Ogryn auxiliaries for his praetorians

They provide a very scottish theme

If someone plans Scotish Space Wolves, look at these old Warzone Miniatures (everything with Wolf in the name ;)):

But what would the scottish-flavoured marines be wearing under their kilts? ;)
