Space Orkies And Stunties (And Flying Devices)
Ok, So over the course of the last year my first project log, became my ONLY project log. Origanaly Started for just my titan, soon everything got pilled in there and it amassed a tone of views but no real comments on anything new i was putting up.

Here is link if you want to check it out.

So i decided to start a new one. This one will be strickty dedicated to my 2 (or 3) newest projects they are (in no paticular order)

A friend from the game shop got the book, being the supportive guy i am i told him i would try to get in on the action. I however dont have the cash for a 3rd game system right now. And with me a wife and a dog who all have a mighty need to eat atleast once a week buying any forgeworld models was out of the question. Epic models look to small. Forgeworld too costly. So whats a guy to do?

Scratch build. Now these are my smallest builds ever, so its still a learning process. The guy at the shop claimed orks, so i took the imperials. My air force will consist of 8 lightings and 2 space marine thunderhawks. A few of us who are getting into this but in an order to FW a while back for bases. Should be here at some point.

Now i started 40k back in 3rd i played orks, they were my first love. But over the past number of years they have been moved to the back burner in favor of newere shinery codex's & models. Now the new book coming in jan the whole army is gettin a redo. Im going from footsloggin flash gitz to A cult of speed type army. Break out the simple green, the whole army is getting stripped moded over and repainted. (Probabaly dipping will ensue). The ork army will also nescessitate the need to scratch build 8-10 vehicles. If i had to guess i would say im aiming for 2500pts with the new book.

As momma use to alway say "There is nothing cooler then a space dwarf with a laser gun". Well mom, never really said that, But if she played 40k i bet she would have. Im going to a con in april, requires a 1K list. Im taking squats. So i needa get cracking, so far i have just a few all in a varrity of stages of completeness. More to come on these boys later.

If i had to say squats would be #1 Priority.
Also continue to check post #1 as i will eventualy post a "model list" of stuff todo. Hopefully i will complete ALL of these projects by the end of March.

Well what are you waiting for? Get cracking!

08-12-2007, 02:26
SO here is the list of what needs Done for my 1K list.
Its 54 Infantry Models and 3 Vehicles.

The Trikes are "Counts As" Sentenals.

2/2 Junior Officers (Bolter & Close Combat Weapon)
4/4 Sergeants (Las Pistol & Close Combat Weapon)
1/1 Standard Bearer

4/4 Plasma Guns
2/3 Auto-Cannons
3/3 Missile Launchers
0/3 Las-Cannons
33/37 Lasguns
3/3 Las-Pistol & CCW

0/1 Inquisitor

2/2 Trikes

0/1 Land Train
54/62 Infantry Models - - - - - (87.1%)
2/3 Vehicle Models - - - - - - - (66.6%)

08-12-2007, 02:31

Like i said my Aeronautica Imperialis army will consist of 8 lighting and 2 thunderhawks. I dont plan on really EVER making more then this. I have already constructed the 8 Lightings, and the 2 thunderhawks are a WIP. I have green squadron painted up.

I built the thunderBOLT before ever playing a game. After my first game i decided i liked the lightnings alot better and they would be the workhorse of my Imperial Navy. I also really dig the desert cammo over urban.

I Included the battle for maccragge guy for scale.

08-12-2007, 02:36

THese are the ones getting stripped.
Im scratchbuilding lots of models, a few of which are WIP right now but not far enough along where you can even tell what your looking at. I also got about 3 boxes worth of unused ork spures which will be build.

Nothing more to see here.....

08-12-2007, 03:22
Cool lightnings and thunderbolts. So when do we get templates for them?

Jester Boy
08-12-2007, 03:36
WOW you really did get cracking. Nice squats and scratch builds and your orks look like a great re-vamp project.

08-12-2007, 05:18
Well alot of the squats that are done so far, were mostly done. They all got ripped off their old bases and touched up as far as painting goes. As far as templates for the AI stuff goes you may have to wait a while as im bussy with other stuff. I MAY one day make some.

Well here they are. Trikes #1 & 2. As well as a photo of a classic trike for those of yall who done know what your looking at. I did beef it up a bit as it will be counting as a sentinel i wanted it to look a little more solid as well as slower.

(PLEASE NOTE: The old trike is not mine, i just googled & found it)

Wow Squats. Cooooooooooooooooooooool. Those trikes are looking awesome.

08-12-2007, 16:10

Nice bikes !

08-12-2007, 17:43
Are the base models the current WFB dwarves?

The Ai stuff looks cracking.

08-12-2007, 20:20
No they are actualy the 6th edition ones.

12-12-2007, 03:17
So I got a fair amount of work done on the trikes. They will probably be put on hold for a while, while i paint more squats. If you couldnt tell they are made from a pair of space marine bikes, with all sorts of other bitz on them. Im going to magnitize the weapon. currently it will be a mutilaser.

I also thought a trike should be about the speed of a attack bike 24" turboboost. ANd decided that the only reason a trike would be moving as slow as a sentenal (6" move, 6" charge) is if it were bogged down with all the gear the squats didn't want to carry. (ammo boxes, fuel, beer barrel). So thats what i did.

Here are Pics.
Remembe they are still very WIP & As always comments & criticism welcome.

UPDATE #2 DEC-11-07
So The other day durring my wife's TV shows i got some squats put together and green stuffed. As such as i got off work today (home@4:15) i set a new record for me. I consider myself an above average painter, maybe B or B- range, but I'm usually pretty slow (averaging about 45-75 minutes per infantry model depenind on what it is.)

But today in 6 hours (which also included including priming the models, eating dinner, feeding & walking dog, talking to wife, ordering her family Christmas stuff online and consulting a friend through Google talk about 40K) i managed to paint 7 squats.

3 of them missiles, 1 autocannon, 2 lasguns and a standard bearer. Hopefully i get about to doing some green-stuffing tomorrow (tremors #4 should be coming from netflix) and get another batch of 7 or 8 ready to paint for this weekend.

I also started working on fluff today, may eventually decided to include and inquisitor or something else exciting.

Heres pics

I'm happy to see how the winged hammer and anvil banner turned out. I also like the extras on the trikes. Coolest scratch-builds I have seen in a while! What are you going to do for the top of the riders' heads? Something with googles, maybe?

One small thought, I do think the banner guy looks a little too Warhammer Fantasy-ish. I think the difference is apparent when I see all the work you spent sculpting the hats and converting the arms on the regular guys. I'm not saying that he needs a big poofy hat, but maybe a cigar or pistol or something.

I'm curious about the fact that you attached the squats onto the strip of plasticard. Seems like a good way to get an assembly-line going. I may have try that out to see if my painting goes any faster.

12-12-2007, 12:50
My whole High Command squad it going to be like the standard more "true to original form" dwarfs from fantasy.

Like i saide before hyde stongly suggest that it would save lots of time to make/flock and do all the basework then just glue the painted model on top. The plasticard stips was my idea, mainly just to give me something to hold on to.

I think it saved me some time though, because i wasnt constantly picking up and putting down models as i was painting. I was actualy holding 4 at a time.

20-12-2007, 03:08
I finished 15 more squats to the 90% mark, (they all need a little work on their faces left).

3 with axes go with the command squad, 2 sergeants, a plasma gunner and 9 las-gunners. Im trying to mix in alot of las-gunners as i go so i dont get the the end of the project and have 40 of them left to tackle.

I also updated the "Squat" post early on to reflect my progress. I think im also going to include an inquisitor in my 1K force. (Probabaly wont get to this for a while).

20-12-2007, 03:17

A couple of us down at the game shop got into a game called "brewhouse bash". Its put out by specialist games. (http://www.specialist-games.com/veriants.asp) And is basically about a buncha orks/orcs clopperin each other in a good ole bar fight. Well this game is tons of fun, so i decided any game as completely awsome as this deserves it own mini.

SO here is my brewhouse orc, complete with chair made for bashin. Oh Yeah, and i worked on my AI thunderhawks a little too. This is probabaly the last amount of stuff ill get done till after the new year.

20-12-2007, 07:30
Ok the Ork with chair is just awesome.

20-12-2007, 14:03
i may have to steal the ork with a chair idea.

28-12-2007, 01:11
So Im easing back in from the Christmas break from modeling & painting. Im putting an order into the warstore tonight. I really cant do much else with my squats untill the order arives. That being said i did finish up "Eb-Rars Jaw Pilla".

I somehow got a pot of "ard stuff" a few years back (i think) i cant even recall how i got it. But i tested it out on some random kroots leg, and this is the first finishe model i tried it on.

28-12-2007, 01:17

Here is the stuff ive done on the squats, and a giant lizard i bought about 8 years ago that i told someone i would post.

Easy E
28-12-2007, 12:02
I think the ork should be weilding a steel chair. Unless, he's for fantasy or course.

I love it anytime someone tries to build squats. That being said, have you thought of de-fantasy-fying them a bit?

28-12-2007, 13:27
Lovely stuff, I’ll steal that chair idea for my orc army.
What doctrines are you going to use for you loveable squats?
I think you should use the Cameleoine one to represent their short stature.

28-12-2007, 13:54
@ Easy E - The Orc is for a game called Brewhouse Bash (its from specialist games, google it) it is great fun. But it is the game that proves that the warhammer fantasy and 40k universes ARE Tied together. Orcs/Orks Transend everything.

It says in the rules that "Orc/Ork as well as Gorkamorka and blood bowl players are all perfectly legal models"

Ill post pics later. The brewhouse is pretty run down, so a metal chair would look really out of place.

As far as de-fantasizing the squats, its a little late in the game for that. A majority of the squats will look at the ones early in the thread (fantasy legs/torso/head, Guardmen arms/weapons, Green stuff fluffy hat & Cape).

The recent ones (3 with Duel axes, Standard & Officer) are part of the High command, as such i tried to make them look more "fantasyesk" with the helmets/axes/hammer/banner/ect/ect.

@Shadow, Right now the only doctrines i have firmly decided on is
-Iron Discipline
-Close order Drill
-Special Weapons Squads
-Deep Strike

I think im going to only give deep strike to a few squads. They will be "tunnelers" or "minner" units, And will probabaly be modeled with drills/pickaxes/shovels/TNT and other things.

Im still thinking about the 5th doctrine, these have crossed my mind carapace armour, Light infantry, ZenosHunters:Nids, ZenosHunters:Orks.

Easy E
28-12-2007, 13:58
Fair enough. Yes, Brewhouse Bash does Rock the House.

For doctrines XenoHunter Ork is Great as is Carapce armor since the RT Squats were reknown for the workmanship of their carapace breastplates. Light Infantry does not fit the Squat style of warfare in my mind.

Two other to consdier- Rough Riders for Squat Bikers and Sanctioned Psykers for the Living Ancestor. I would take the Psyker and give him the Honorific Imperialis/Force Weapon to represent the LA. Then, put him in the high Command.

28-12-2007, 15:38
Yeah i know, i was just toyin about with using light infantry as a "recon" force, or maybe more tunnellers.

The idea crossed my mind about the ancestor, however i think its alot of points for something that is borderline not usefull at all.

Right now my plan is to take this 1K list to a convention in april, and while i apricate doing things for fluff and coolness reasons, i still enjoy having a competitive army. Ill post my list here later so you can review it an offer opinions.

30-12-2007, 19:39
does taking inquisitorial allies use up a doctrine?

Grey Knights terminators would be a good stand in for exo armor.

04-01-2008, 12:37
@Kikko - No

I finished building and green stuffing 8 more squats (2 las-cannon gunners, 2 sergeants, 4 Aux Lasguners) They should hopefully be painted by tonight. I Also started work on the Trikes.

Im getting close to running out of squat doner bodies, though i think i found someone at the gameshop to trade with to get about 30 more.

Pictures Tonight.

07-01-2008, 00:02

I finished 3 more lightnings. So here are green & blue squadrons.... im not sure if im going to paint the last 2 in the same camo scheme or switch it up.

07-01-2008, 00:14

Finished the Trikes. As always comments & criticisms are welcome.

07-01-2008, 00:16

Finished 8 more squats, my goal is to get up to 65 done by next friday (12 days) that way i can start giving them squad numbers & basing them. This way i can actualy play some small games with them.

First Picture is the 8 newest squats, the second is my las-cannon paint scheme, which im not completely sold myself on. IF anyone has any ideas i would love to hear them.

The 3rd is a bad picture of all 43 squats sitting on my shelf. I am over half way done now. HUZZAH!

Eater of Small Things
07-01-2008, 06:27
I like that you painted the designation numbers on the nose of each of the Lightnings. That should make it easier to identify which plane my Orks are shooting down. :D

One thought on those numbers though: I think it'd look a lot better if you painted the designation number black, and then painted the blue over that to give it a shadow. Bonus points if you can paint a tiny light blue highlight. I did a quick photoshop job to show what I'm talking about, because visual aids are cool.

Kudos on finishing the top of the biker-squats' heads and getting them all painted up. I love the barrel of triple 'X' moonshine. That's a nice touch. Keep up the good work, man.

19-01-2008, 20:41

Heres the Start of 4 Ork Trukks, and my final 2 AI lightings

19-01-2008, 20:42

I finish my first 2 full platoons & command Squad (55 men)
Here are some Bad Pics, Plus my plans for the heavy weapons (the las-cannon is just sitting there, no glue yet)

Easy E
20-01-2008, 09:58
Those lightnings are the bees' knees. Makes me want to scratch some up, even though no one in my area plays the game.

20-01-2008, 11:05

I was sitting in the shed thinking about my squats and this was an idea I was toying with :) Now I've seen it done I think I may have to give it a go.

Trike look great by the way (not the colours, but that's personel taste), brillint scratch build!!

You've probably already settled on you force, but have you thought about Slayers? Count as Priests. In the unreleased GW stuff, they'd built Cyber Slayers, plenty of flesh, lots of cyber, and bucket loads of attitude.

20-01-2008, 21:27
Hi there Lackof...

I love the Trikes, and interested in your build.. What did you use for the central upright core of the trike (at the rear) upon which the multilaser is mounted..

Many thanks.. and continue the great work..

Best wishes,

20-01-2008, 21:49
Heh, loving the Squats but those AI fliers are awesome! You could nearly pass em for the real thing. Tempting me into making some myself.

Wolf Scout Ewan
20-01-2008, 22:48
Yay! I love the short guys! I can say the S word because I worry that somewhere God will kill a kitten.

21-01-2008, 03:33
@Ross - Can you link me to the cyber slayers? Im not sure ill use em but im still interested in seeing what they look like.

@Cthorpe - Its one of the "claw" arms from a defiler. It would be the "lower arm" that goes from the claw up to the "elbow joints". This is the best i can describe it. Hope it makes sense. I just covered up all the chaosy stuff with crates & barrels and the likes.

@Luke - I strongly recomend playing around with AI, the only downfall to the game is the high cost of rules & finding people to play with. If you can scratch build or use epic models i think it is a much better (Fun & Rules Set Wise) then 40K.

@Wolf Scout - Yes ether that or GW will show up at your house and trash your computer. I fear them not though.....

21-01-2008, 03:43

First things first, i dropped some squats from my 1K list and added a leman russ (will need to buy and paint one). Now BASES!!!

So all the painting on plasticard strips finaly paid off. When talking with the guy who was helping me base today we estimated a normal amount of time to base a model "normaly" took 6-10 minutes (6 to 10 an hour). @ the 62 bases my 1000 pt squat army needs this would take 6.2 to 10.33 hours. Working with some one we will cut this time in half say 3 hours of 2 people working really hard not stop.

Today we bases 62 bases in 65 minutes. And this included a fair amount of lollygagging. So basicly we just flocked, painted, drybrushed, then flocked green in one big sitting after sticky-tacking 62 empty bases to some foamcore.

I still have a little work to do cleaning up the edges and painting the sides but ill restate that - we did 62 BASES in about as many minutes.

Im never painting a model on a base EVER AGAIN.
Every base on this sheet of foamcore represents every infantry model in my 1K list. So you can see im almost done. Ill hopefully post a new updated list tommorow.

Here are Pictures.

Speaking of which, what size are those heavy weapon bases again?

21-01-2008, 21:10
They are 40mm

22-01-2008, 13:56

List will include a "land train" which will be a counts as leman russ. Ill probabaly begin work on it right as soon as feb. gets here.

Here is an updated List. 1000 points on the button, i think its pretty balanced, nothing over the top. My doctrines are close order drill & Iron Discipline.

22-01-2008, 13:57
Here is some Work In Progress pictures of my inquisitor. The body was a "SM master of the chapter". I actually cut is powerfist hand off of his helmet and let him wear it. I also cut his arm down to add the psy-cannon. This was a pain cause it is basically a 1 piece model. I still have a fair amount of filing & green stuff to do before i can paint but heres some pictures.

Also here is a picture of one of the auto-cannon bases I finished last nigtht

Eater of Small Things
22-01-2008, 18:59
Lookin' good. The land train is a new development, right? Any source material out there to give an idea what it will look like?

Also, what's the inquisition book from?

I dig the autocannon on wheels, but the 40mm base is looking a bit too cramped. Give yourself more room!

05-02-2008, 22:40

Sorry i have been slow on the updates, i finished the inquisitor and did some work on my AI thunderhawks. Here is the inquisitor.

Also my photobucket account has been funny cause i have exceeded its bandwidth. So here are links to my new (and crappier) flicker account.

Eater of Small Things
07-02-2008, 07:22
I dig the scribbles you painted in the smaller book that's hanging from the inquisitor's waist. It's a nice touch.

He turned out so well that I think you should consider including some retinue figures for added flavor. Don't get me wrong, I know that every single model in this horde army has been lovingly converted, GS'ed, and painted, but I feel like some retinue flunkies might be a good opportunity to add more dimension to the army theme at a very low points cost. Perhaps they could help you bridge the gap between the inquisition's presence and the squats. (Hmmmmmmm, squat servitors?)

07-02-2008, 11:06
btw you could always chuck in a commisar because it rolls with fluff, just throwing in ideas =P

23-02-2008, 03:28

So i have been doing tons of work on my Aeronautica stuff recently (painting both thunderhawks and scratchbuilding flak guns).

The flak guns are all on 20mm x 20mm bases, its 4 auto-cannon sabers and 2 heavy flak cannons.

I also have done a fair amount of stuff on the squats, pictures will be coming soon (maybe)

heres pics of AI

23-02-2008, 03:54
love the squats and the IW colour scheme of the Inquisitor.

The Master of the Arsenal is the best fig GW has done for SM in a long time IMO

25-02-2008, 04:25
holy crap, I've got to get cracking on EVERYTHING.

Thanks guys ill try to get more pictures up on the squats later on this week.

Hopefully my full 2000K+ squat army will be done in the next week or two. Same with my empire. Soon ill be working on scratchbuilding some BFG stuff. If anyone has cool links i would love to see them

27-02-2008, 17:23
Lackof, have you been making templates of your AI stuff as you go? If so, I would love to see these on the BWC. I could use the reference material.
