I'm giving some thought to doing a Warmaster army. I have the Battle of Five Armies game, and I'm wondering how well the goblins from that would work as goblins in Warmaster. I know they look quite different to modern Warhammer-style gobbos but they do remind me of some of the older style ones. Has anyone else done this?

They are slightly smaller than WM but not that much.
If it gets you started then go for it.
I used the dwarves from BOFA in my dwarf army and they fit in ok.

I've heard about BoFA stuff being slightly smaller, but seeing as the 'goblins' in the Hobbit are the orcs of Lord of the Rings, I assume that the BoFA goblins are thinner but taller than the Warmaster goblins. Does that seem correct?

I cannot really comment as I do not own any WM Goblins.
But I have hung on to around 4 boxes worth of BOFA goblins just in case one day I decide to go for an O&G army.
I would buy a cheap pack off of eBay and do a comparison.
If YOU are happy with them then go for it.
I have seen people use pendraken/kallistra models as proxies and these look out of place due to them being larger than WM(in my opinion).
