View Full Version : dev's plodding log - Vostroyans, Infinity, Eldar, and other procrastinations

21-12-2007, 18:29
Well I really should get started on this bloody army.

Long story short, I have 2000 points of Vostroyan infantry, 2 squads and 10 blisters on order, and I am yet to paint a single thing (ok, not true, I did a half-assed test model). Current model count is;

Senior Officer
4 Junior Officers
3 Medics

67 Troopers
10 Flamers
6 Plasma Guns
5 Grenade Launchers

6 Mortar Crews
4 Lascannons
5 Heavy Bolters
2 Autocannons (still need to create crew)

This will be a trench warfare themed army, so along the lines of DKoK for basing, etc. I'm still in the prep stages, since cleaning metal really is a pain in the butt.

I will be taking pictures of the company tonight, but I was after advice on colour schemes. I originally was gonna go green... until LotE and a half dozen others went that route and utterly spoiled my originality (:p) so I have a couple of options available;

Black cloth, iron trim, brown hats
Bone cloth, brass trim, black hats
Brown cloth, silver trim, white hats

Opinions on this would be great. I still gotta get my Ghostmas shopping done today, so I eagerly look forward to the commentary of "you suck!" when I get back :D

Oh yes, within 2.5 weeks I also plan to add a Warhound and 2 Baneblades to this, so it's not all small stuff =P

21-12-2007, 18:36
if the baneblades and warhound doesn't arrive on time give me the address of your mail man...

21-12-2007, 18:39
The warhound is a scratch build, and the baneblades are reliant solely upon my next pay day (though Christmas may be nice to me too). For the warhound, I have a friend who makes boxes and so has access to a card cutting table of great accuracy. The next week and a bit of holidays from work will give me the chance to build a mock up to see if I need to requisition his services.

I gotta have 3k pts for Apoc in February, hence the Baneblades, and then it's 5k the month after, hence the Warhound and extra troops. The March battle should be real good - Vostroyans and Praetorians with 6 or more Super Heavies against one guy's 10,000pt Ork horde.

22-12-2007, 05:43
Right, and now for some sense of scale of the models I have so far.

Command Platoon and Support Elements
Officer, Medic, Standard, 2 Plasmas
2 Mortar Squads

Infantry Platoon 1
Officer, 2 Flamers, Heavy Bolter
4x Squads, Flamer, Heavy Bolter

Infantry Platoon 2
Officer, Medic, Lascannon, Plasma Gun
3x Squads, Plasma Gun, Lascannon

Infantry Squad 3
Officer, Medic, 3 Grenades Launchers
2x Squads, Grenade Launcher, Autocannon (stupid crew needed still, as well as mount completion)

22-12-2007, 05:45
The Boyz!
I love Mortars, Basilisks, and Demolishers. Nothing says Guard like templates.

And this is the test paint job done in 3 minutes one day for kicks. It's terrible, I know.

22-12-2007, 12:00
Yeah, that model could do with some... um.. improvements :p Your tanks look pretty sweet though, can we get a closer pic of them? Good luck with your painting on the rest of the army!

22-12-2007, 21:23
Bone cloth, brass trim, black hats

Thats the one I most like the sound of.

23-12-2007, 05:49
You suck. :p

Brown cloth, dirty white hats, brass/crappy gold trim.

23-12-2007, 05:50
I don't suck, you suck! :cries:

Why am I not surprised that you two fail to agree on the best scheme? Roll on Christmas I say, I'll get stuff done then when everybody has fled the home except myself.

23-12-2007, 06:43
Pft, like matt has any taste:p

Thinking some more about it, go a silver iron trim with brown cloth/white hats. Gold and brown would likely end up to similar.

23-12-2007, 07:30
Which is why I said silver trim the first time. Once again something you fail at.

I think I'll take a couple of my leftovers and slap some paint on them, get the bone and brown schemes tested out.

23-12-2007, 11:08
I think your green scheme could work, with some improvements. There's another green Vostroyan army somewhere on Warseer (can't remember who's though) and that looks really nice.

23-12-2007, 11:15
Ah I found it, they belong to 'Roel?' it works well with his snowy bases.

23-12-2007, 16:57
The issue is that Green has become very popular, especially with Light of the Emperor's scheme (which I feel he stole from me in some way I can't yet fathom :p ) so I'm looking to do something different to other folks online too. I'm picky like that unfortunately.

30-12-2007, 00:57

Finally got the camera back and continued with priming the netting. It's looking much better as the grey goes on.

30-12-2007, 10:34
Hurrah, more Vostroyans! Impressive numbers you got there! I've only gotten as far as 62 troopers total... I must say I like the sound of brown coats. Can't remember seeing that before, if it helps. Nice baslisk too! What colours willl you use on the armour? Keep it up!

30-12-2007, 10:38
Armour will be probably be iron grey, since I'm trying to keep it in line with WWI style, including mud/trench bases and the like. Dull and muddy is the name of the game, much like how most DKoK players are working on their forces.

Still working on getting the filthy metal cleaned up, been kind of distracted by a ton of Ultramarine 1st Company I'm also building.

30-12-2007, 23:43
Trying out some basing as I continue on my mission to clean up the metal (26 or so done in the past 24 hours, I hate filing metal).

Anyway, these bases aren't complete, but it's plaster filler/spackle/polyfilla, balsa wood, and I will be adding in some sand in patches at the end to fill in gaps and add variety to the texture.

Not all of them will be to this detail, some will just be filler and sand for mud, with no balsa. The wood is generally makeshift barricades, trench remnants, etc.

31-12-2007, 12:31
Nice work on the base

01-01-2008, 01:51
Cheers mate. I always appreciate getting the good feedback :D

I'm looking at my Apocalypse list, the first for a 4v4, 10,000pt game, and the second a 1v2 10,000pt game (I know somebody with more than 10,000pts of Orks, being Lord_Lucifer here. He scares me). I unfortunately have the small problem of having more of my supplementary army than my primary. In this case, I have 2k worth of Vossies (my primary army) and 3k points of Ultramarine Veterans (my secondary).

Here's the list;

Vostroyans (Iron Discipline, Close Order Drill)
JO - Honorifica, Bolt Pistol, Bionics, Trademark Item, Iron Discipline
CMD - Medic, Standard, 2 Plasma Guns
2x Mortar Squads

Junior Officer - Bolt Pistol, Iron Discipline
CMD - 2 Flamers, Heavy Bolter
4x Infantry Squads - Heavy Bolter, Flamer

Junior Officer - Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon, Iron Discipline
CMD - Lascannon, Plasma Gun, Medic
3x Infantry Squads - Lascannon, Plasma Gun

Junior Officer - Bolt Pistol, Iron Discipline
CMD - Medic, 3 Grenade Launchers
2x Infantry Squads - Autocannon, Grenade Launcher

Demolisher - Plasma Sponsons, Heavy Bolter, Rough Terrain, X Arm, Smoke
Basilisk - Armoured Compartment, Camo Netting, Smoke, Indirect Fire

Masters of the Chapter Formation
Marneus Calgar
Captain - Lightning Claws, Artificer Armour, Terminator Honours
Captain - Power Fist, Power Weapon, Artificer Armour, Terminator Honours
Captain - Storm Shield, Power Weapon, Artificer Armour, Terminator Honours
Captain - Thunder Hammer, Terminator Honours, Artificer Armour
Honour Guard - 2 Honour Guard, Ancient, Chapter Champion

6 Assault Terminators
6 Terminators - 2 Cyclone Missile Launchers, Tank Hunters
6 Terminators - 2 Assault Cannons, Tank Hunters

Land Raider Crusader - Smoke Launchers

5 Veterans - Lightning Claws, Power Weapon, Vet Sgt, Lightning Claws
5 Veterans - Power Weapon, Power Fist, Vet Sgt, Power Fist
5 Veterans - Power Weapon, Lightning Claws, Vet Sgt, Power Weapon
5 Veterans - Meltagun, Missile Launcher, Vet Sgt, Combi-Melta

That all comes in at approx 4980pts. I need to somehow mix it down to 3k as well. Ugh.

02-01-2008, 02:57
Like the base on the gun crew, very nice, dont stand on the yellow snow!
And heres me thinking that the Vostys had disappeared into the wardrobe of oblivion!

Bugbait out

02-01-2008, 03:55
Nope! In fact I only have 5 more models to clean up, I just can't bring myself to finish them today, not after cleaning up 40 of them already in the past 24 hours.

02-01-2008, 22:48
Looks promising indeed, hope to see more.

Now that you're not really started yet: please don't combine the flat and normal 60mm bases :(. Mailorder a bunch of the normal ones instead (since they're not for sale in store anymore?), it will look a lot better overall.

03-01-2008, 01:50
Mailorder costs a stupid amount to New Zealand though, so I really do just gotta suck it up and suffer the mixed bases unfortunately :(

23-01-2008, 05:29
Wow I suck at doing stuff! Well, on the Vossies anyway. It's kind been a bit of an Ultramarine moment for me, since they're the first army up for the Apocalypse treatment in 2 weeks. I did however go shopping today... and last week, for that matter. I have lots of stuff to do, so just to put it in to perspective I give you my very own brand of stupidity!

Stuff I bought in the past 2 weeks - that's a bunch of Wood Elf blisters + Battleforce (and army book), Eldar Battleforce, Farseer/Warlocks and Swooping Hawks in the plastic boxes, Dire Avengers in front of them, and I forgot to put in the Avatar, Fire Dragons, and Warp Spiders. Note the two lovely Basilisks? Squee!

A bunch of Infinity stuff too! Ugh, more metal for my brain...

My Cryx, Khador, and Skorne stuff for Warmachine/Hordes. I've had a lot of these for two years plus. The no-painting element of that game is bad for doing stuff. Yes, the bottom picture is a drawer of mixed up metal minis.

23-01-2008, 05:32
A drawer of fantasy - in this case it's Nurgle Chaos and some Bretonnian Men-at-Arms. The Nurgle stuff I started 3.5-4 years ago and haven't touched since. I do want to at some point though.

And finally, the tragedy! An army of extensively converted (re: every model has a banner, custom weapon, or something commander-ish) Ultramarines Veteran army for Apocalypse. One of our cats managed to destroy half the models in one foul swoop though, so they need some serious repair in the next 2 weeks. It doesn't show the full number of models so;
6 Captains
Marneus Calgar
Honour Guard
3x6 Terminators
7x5 Veterans
Land Raider Crusader

So see? I have an excuse for not getting anything done on the Vossies. This thread will become a general log I imagine, we'll see.

23-01-2008, 08:40
Wow! you have a metric ton of unpainted stuff, and you didnt even mention all of your Brets!
Im so jealous, you have TWO Blades, one of each or magnetic configuration?

PS I have a dog who can help with your cat problem, just LOVES cats if you get my drift.

Bugbait out.

23-01-2008, 08:47
Our kitten will destroy your dog. I know he destroys ours.

Blades will be one Blade, one Hammer, both sponsons will be for the Blade (plan on using the Hellhammer as a front line, Baneblade as support)

Hve u ever considered blue cloth with white border line, silver forall the metal and black hats.
I've already did a tester model(cadian) and it looks good, but the armour swould look better if it was darker the all ther other metal.

03-03-2008, 18:21
That's too much like my Ultramarines 1st company though (blue armour, white trim, silver and gold detailing, dark leather) so I set aside blue to try something a touch less orthodox. At this point I'm contemplating using Tamiya German Grey to base them instead and going for a darker look. I've been really slack recently, working on Infinity, but progress is slowly being made.

03-03-2008, 19:08
Deffinately do the bone coats, add a dark, iron-colour for the armour and the brass rim on that and then you're set

04-03-2008, 14:22
Keep plugging away man, I am in the same boat. I have about 3,000 points of spring/tundra respirator adorned Cadians I am doing and then about 2,000 points of vossies that I bought to accompany them.

12-03-2008, 21:35
God I'm terrible. I've got some paint on the tanks, but that's it. I've spent too much time on Infinity, so now I've gonna start posting that in here too. Once I get home I'll get some pics up of my Infinity stuff.

Suffice to say, at this point I have;

1 van Zant
4 Line Kazaks w/ Rifle
1 Line Kazak w/ Missile launcher
2 Scouts w/ AP Sniper Rifle
1 Scout w/ E/Mauler
1 Scout w/ Ojotnik
2 Tankhunters w/ Autocannons
1 Tankhunter w/ ADHL
1 Tankhunter w/ HMG
1 Vet Kazak w/ HMG
1 Vet Kazak w/ AP Rifle
1 Antipode Assault Pack
1 Irmandinho w/ Chain Rifle
1 Irmandinho w/ Rifle
1 Paracommando w/ Rifle

Combined Army
1 Avatar TAG
1 Caskuda TAG
3 Morat Line Infantry w/ Combi-Rifles
1 Daturazi Witch Soldier
1 Charontid
1 Shrouded w/ Sniper Rifle
1 Malingos w/ Combi-Rifle
1 Vector Operator w/ HMG
1 Speculo Killer

Add on to this the fact that I'm gonna start looking at my Eldar now, sooooo;

Craftworld Ulthwe' Aspect Shrines
1 Farseer
3 Warlocks
1 Avatar
18 Dire Avengers
12 Guardians
1 Warwalker
6 Swooping Hawks
5 Warp Spiders
6 Fire Dragons
1 Wave Serpent

12-03-2008, 21:41
Check my log, in my sig. I just posted some updates to my cadian log.

12-03-2008, 21:43
Awww man now I gotta keep pace with you :p

12-03-2008, 21:48
Thanks for the comments. If you want to make yourself feel better go over and check the warseer painting support group.

I have a TON of stuff yet to paint.

15-03-2008, 23:54
Right, I got pics (and Meshuggah!)

First up, my Ariadna army, both built and to be built. I loves my crazy Russians and friends :D

15-03-2008, 23:55
And next up is the Covenant... I mean Combined Army! yeah, that's the one! TAGs are big, btw

Group shot!

Ur Rationalist Avatar TAG and Charontid (left) with Exrah Concordat Caskuda TAG and Vector Operator

The Shasvasti (Speculo Killer, Malignos, and Shrouded), my overwhelmingly preferred species of the Combined army

Morat! Otherwise known as "the meat"

16-03-2008, 02:15
Oh. Two Autocannon. Yay.

16-03-2008, 02:21
And look! Two AP Snipers! And I got 2 AP HMGs! Oh oh oh and Van Zants got an axe! :D

16-03-2008, 06:39
That test scheme would look really good if shaded in and touched up so in other words it looks like it would be a great base to elaborate upon.

09-04-2008, 01:37
Progress! GASP! And it's only been... almost 26 days?

It's all Infinity, all Ariadna, and all WIP. Going for a red desert scheme, so a dark, unsaturated red as the primary colour with dusty yellows, browns, and blacks for detail and fatigues.

Ariadna Antipode Assault Pack and Controller

Ariadna Scout with AP Sniper Rifle

09-04-2008, 01:38
Ariadna Veteran Kazak with AP Rifle

Ariadna Tankhunter with Autocannon

09-04-2008, 01:50
I'm liking how the red has come out, for the most part (the antipode controller aint so good, but that could be the picture). Needs a matt varnish though.

I'm not sure about the yellows though. I think they need to be darkened down, more brown I think.

09-04-2008, 02:01
The varnish will make a huge difference. That's just the base for the yellows, it'll be closer to sand or bone once I'm done.

09-04-2008, 02:04
Oh, I see. Much more contrast than if you went brown. Nice:D

09-04-2008, 20:07
Yeah, Brown would blend right on in.

The AP Sniper is all red, her twin will have yellow pants to mix them up, and the THs will also have different patterns. I'm wondering if I want to camo them with brown splotches over the red, using that salt technique I tested on my Deathjack.

09-04-2008, 21:43
Looking sweet Devo, the red and beige site very well with each other - nice choices.
