Well, its been a long time since i wanted to do an ork army, but i've been tempted back into it by the new orks. So, as i often do, it thought i'd get to grips with them starting on a small project, and a stompa was the smallest i could think off,

So here is what i've managed up to now. I apologise for the pictures, unfortunatly my usb and camera are not talking, and the card reader doesn't even acknowledge the pc. so webcamage...>.<

Front and back of the 1st lower leg:

I find it almost impossible to make out what I'm looking at, but the scale pic with the guardsman at least makes me intruiged enough to come back and look when your camera's working again.

(I assume its a girl:p)

Its an ork, so technically its a "it"

I think it will be a he/she, like all orks. longing to have some reproductive organs, but sadly lack any.

ok i've been doin some research on stompas, and my inspiration falls between this concept sketch:

http://www.pbase.com/brimstone/image/62813521.jpg
And this rather cool stompa (http://www.coolminiornot.com/167594)

what do we reckon? making it taller, but keeping to the original sketch

I'm looking forward to how your Stompas legs will attach to the body. I've just managed to get my Stompa standing all on its own for the first time, and I had a 'Happy Accident' which makes it look like the Stompa is starting to take a step forward.

Y'know Hawke, when I saw the very first pic I thought it was the Stompa body itself!! The scale of the thing is impressive so far, just how big IS your bitz box hmm? Keep it up, I love this stuff. Might even inspire me as to some ideas for Ork warships in BFG!

G.Hawke
23-01-2008, 20:51
size.... size.... i dunno... i've never seen the bottom of the box.... well boxes. around give of them, each about two feet in height and width, though the depth of then scares me. Time and relative dimensions have been known to occur within the confined of the box...

Thanks for the comment, i should get it done any year now :D

@major: Depends on the design, the longshanks was mostly legs and arms, like defiler conversion, however the newer art worked based is about the right size leg to torse wise:

It has to be a saw, definitely. Mental image of a circular saw being swung through a rank of guardsmen just occurred... Yes, I suggest the saw

The tank is shaping up nicely too but I'm guessing these guys aren't all gonna fit in that 1000pt army you mentioned heh heh!

Hmmm, ever thought about having some Snotling/ Grot attendants around the legs of the little Stompas? Carrying equipment/ parts/ being crushed underfoot?

G.Hawke
27-01-2008, 19:42
sounds like an idea...

and actully, i worked out most of the units and it came to around 900pts. orks are dirt cheap and know it :D

Now there is a Mek who takes his 'convertun' seriously!

Great stuff, you must have a huge bits box.

A minor suggestion for the Dread, I have seen some pretty good feet made with old tank tracks (something that every bits box has) rather than foam card, or at least to cover the foam card with.

Good luck with the Stompa.

Love everything here, really looks ramshackle and propah! Would add though that you must add rivets! Rivets are as orky as green skin ;)

It does indeed go faster :D I looted Stuart`s way of painting vehicles only mine with a bit more metal showing through and it`s a very effective but nice looking method.

The trukk needs something that says it a fast vehicle. Some serious nitro-injection thingy - you know what I mean don`t ya :) Also remove those side-armour things so that it get`s a slimmer profile, would help with the speedy look.

you know what mate? IT DOES! i did a speed freeks army a couple of years back and the red paint jobs took no time at all!

I have to say the Mek is superb, Really like the blue in the electrics and the skin tone is genius! How did he do in the comp?

I can't wait to see the finished stompa, the one you linked to coolminiornot is awesome but i think you can emulate this having seen your fledgling army!

As part of my log, i promised a guide to scratch built stompas, so here is part one. The body guide:

Killa-kan part 1: Da Body bitz:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5330.jpg

To start you will need something cardish.

The following peices (Square) will be needed:

two plates (C) plate measuring 1cm in width, 2.4cm in height:

Four plates (b) measuring 0.5cm in width, 2.4cm in height:

One plate(A2) measuring 1.3 cm in width, 2.4cm in height, and one plate(A) measuring 1.3 cm in width, 1.3cm in height:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5345.jpg

If, as mine do, the plates arn't equal, try and level them up a bit first, however do not worry. Ork killa kans's don't need to be perfect, they are, afterall, walking scrap.

The next step to cut the base for the body.

firstly make a square 2cm wide by 1.7cm deep, its at this point you start going by eye and thumb, shown below:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5346.jpg

Cut at will. Now you have this base, stick plate a2, followed by plate b on both sides. Now add plate c followed by b. You now have just the one slot for plate A to go, and it should look like this:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5347.jpg

Thats it for this first section as my camera just died...

Comin soon: Da Leg's and stuff:

Red Skullz

G.Hawke

thanks for the crit vol,

anyways:

Killa-kan part II: Da Leg's and stuff:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5347.jpg

You should be here.

for the next step you will need the following peices (Square):

two plates (d) measuring 1cm in width, 0.7cm in height:

one plates (d2) measuring 1.3cm in width, 1.3cm in height:

two plates (E) measuring 1.9cm wide, 1.1cm in height.

One plate (F) measuring 1.8cm wide, 1.1cm in height,=.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5407.jpg

place the D plates together and glue the D's to the rear and front of the lower chest. then place d2 between the two plates and make sure when you glue it, both sides are equally slanted.

Now glue plates e on either side. there will be overhang, this is solved by either marking and cutting, or my preference clipping the excess away: Shown below:

now take plate F, and bent it slightly. this will be the face plate in the whole above the short A plate. glue it in place, keeping ample pressure that the curve remains:

[img]http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5410.jpg

The next step to cut the lid for the body.

firstly make a square 2cm wide by 1.7cm deep, its at this point you start going by eye and thumb, to got this:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5411.jpg

this is you now. (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5412.jpg)

Very cool G.Hawke, very cool indeed. I notice you've used Black Orcs as 'ard boyz. I was planning on doing much the same to create a unit of Nobz with 'eavy armour (they even have a Waagh!! banner). How did you find the compatibility of the two kits?

G.Hawke
11-02-2008, 10:56
its a very mixed affair, you have to remove the shoulders from the boyz chopppa arms, however overall they go together rather well. i've dropped them from my army as they don't look speedfreek enough, however they do look good as 'lads. definatly good for nob's,

Although the repositioning of the legs is brilliant work, (mind telling me how you did that, I never get it right, it always looks odd) I think the foot that is on the ground should be on the base instead of a stone or light, it looks a bit over the top to me.

I really like the Nob, can't wait to see him painted!

The mainc hange is the three burning skulls, although lacking flames at this moment, they are more in keeping with the artwork.

Transport, there is no way i'm letting that sort of unit get shot to buggery before it gets to Duff 'em up. Though quite what sort i do not know, but i'll suppose a trukk may have to do.

just bought some more 'lads, trukk and gs to help towards this 500pt by monday expansion.

Love that bike! Well regarding transport for your burnas it`s either a looted wagon or a battlewagon. I`d go for a looted wagon with skorcha and two big shootas :D

hey guys thanks for the crit, the straps i'm trying to figure out a less crap colour than black, i think the model suffers from being "rusty". its lack the dynamististy orks posses, and certainly un speedfreeky. however, i'll buy some paints and get a shotta squad finished for you to crit.

and wazdakka it getting two diffrent heads, one a raw sculpt, one a conversion for the meantime, so it should go well.

ok a artical inbetween the kan guide.

Firstly get a horse base, and two sloota bases. everyone has spares of these so there should be no issues. Cut the slotta base in two and glue the smallest side to the base.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5481.jpg

Next start to cover the gaps up with something like plasticard or other materials, and GS in the gaps between the slotta bases and the horse base.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5482.jpg

Next i decided to goe for a cathedral style/cobbled street affair. cut out squares of plasticard approximatly the same size and begin to stick them down. remember to model damaged and broken tiles in, since a working church isn't likly to get a biker zooming up and down it:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/DSCF5483.jpg

G.Hawke
17-02-2008, 12:50
I then realised i wanted the base to show, so i needed away to eleveate the from of the bike. in this case i decided on a girder:

Hey Hawke, shame on me for not postin again for so long!

You have inspired me to do some scratch building of Ork attack ships for BFG :)

Really like your stuff, the dynamic reposing of the Boys was an excellent move, really lends to the fast moving theme of these guys.

As to brightening up the ladz... Have you considered tattoes on the arms and mebbe some faces? Adrian Wood did brighter coloured 'dags' on his squads waaay back and that injected some colour so figured I'd suggest it if that's what ur looking at!

Can't wait to see a photo of the whole lineup so far *hint hint hint*

Keep going, dude! Get some paint on those suckers!

thanks ragsta, glad i could be of some help to someone.

Ok, blog-date.
WAZADAKKA IS BANNED :cries:
I can't use him in my 1500 point tournie thats currently going on, however on the up side, i can keep him as warboss. tonight he killed 7 assault marines and three normal marines before getting killed. So proved himself points wise. On another note, there is now 45pts going spare. So i did what any ork could do. I dropped a shoota from the transport loota and bought me... A BOOMBOMBING Deffkopta. It killed two marines before absorbing an entire devisator squads fire. Not bad, and he kept trukks alive long enough to cause get three squads in the objective. Great work Pilot "Kamkaze" Ruka.

look forwards to finished model pics, and now the army is build i move to the next stage... Painting 1500pts worth of orks :chrome:

Defo use the top knot, it made a huge difference! Oh and I always play non-special characters. My own are much more fun ;)

Not envying you on painting all them orks, my tip is to paint 2 rank & filers at a time, 1 nob or HQ or special weapon or "insert" at a time. If you do two rank & filers, then one of the other you keep yourself more motivated. At least I do :) The benefit with this method is that you feel you make progress faster and you don`t forget minor details that easy on the minis.

Good luck!

I really love the work you've done and it has awoken my will to cut and paste my own ork vehicles. The deffkopta shows a brilliant use of the loota kit and I just might pilfer that idea myself :)

Wazdakka looks nice and it's a shame he has to run as an ordinary warboss, but hopefully you'll crush all your enemies anyway...

Its been a while.... 8 months in fact. I've decided that, since i am soon to return home to my speed freeks, i am going to finish a few of the models and paint them. as such, i'm bringing this log back.

HOWEVER, rather than just make a post of thread-romancy, i've got a nice picture of a new Speed freek here:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/Commisarat/PICT2591.jpg

Skin needs a bit of work i think.

As for the rest of the force: Well, its two weeks till i finish at uni and return home, to where the stompa and all the rest of my speed freeks lay in slumber. I shall awaken them, finish a few of them, and paint them.

And you'll notice the death skulls in stomp II have a similar approach in scheme, this is down to the fact that the other log is a sequal, a spin off, or, a diffrent waggh on the same world, vieing with this force.

more soon, honest!
