Do you fancy signing up to a 'Tale of specialist gamers' as part of a Firebase feature?

You'd be expected to put together and paint an army/band/gang/fleet for either BFG, Epic, Inquisitor or Necromunda, and take some photos of the force as you go along.

I'd expect the series to run for two issues (Issues 6 and 7 of Firebase).

So, anyone interested?

i'm purchasing some enforcers, so I'd be more then happy to paint and display them:D

I have about 6,000 pts of original Space Marine/Adeptus Titanicus models I've been keeping for a "special occasion" since 1990. Any good? They're already on the bases (square ones at that!) but not painted at all. An Epic Marine army would be a nice break from the Orks and Skaven that I regularly fail to paint....

A couple of things:

What size army are you looking for?
I only have my 3.2MP camera phone for picture-taking - a problem?
(as previous poster) What sort of deadlines/word counts/picture limits are you looking for?

I'd want your first progress report (Perhaps even a completion!) by mid February in order to make the deadline for issue 6.

A couple of things:

I'm looking for what *you* do when you build an army.

No set spending limits, no upper size to your army.

I want you, the player's experience of building an army/gang/fleet/etc, so I'm going to impose as few restrictions as possible.

Of course, Firebase is downloaded by 120,000 people per issue, so you may want to make it look good. :D

I only have my 3.2MP camera phone for picture-taking - a problem?

We prefer to have high quality pictures, no cameras you can borrow?

(as previous poster) What sort of deadlines/word counts/picture limits are you looking for?

Deadline mid Feb, word count one-two pages including pictures. You can have as many pics as you like... as these are SG models often this will be players first introduction to them, more is better than less!

Okay Chaos and Evil. Sounds like I may not be your man. I've never finished a single model in 17 years (on & off) in the hobby so I don't honestly know if my painting is up to the quality I think you're after. Terrible I know, but I am such a lazy painter with a short attention span!

What I'll do is get a few stands painted over the next few days, take some pics (with my phone) and send them in to you with a bit of text. Let me know if my writing/painting/photos are good enough, and we can take it from there? I just don't want to promise you something which I can't deliver. I can probably get access to a decent camera for any final pics as I know a few folks with 'em.

Either way, it's a fine undertaking for the mag. I'm one of the 120,000 you mentioned, and looking forward to reading the finished articles of those taking part.

Yep, that's fine by me.

As long as it doesn't look like poo (Or perhaps is a nurgle fleet that literally is poo), then it can go in.

In your page of text, you can talk about how you're doing this fleet on a budget.

I'd love to help - I've got an epic IG army soaking in Nitromoors at the moment waiting for an excuse to roll out. I'm sure I could get pics and text in by mid-Feb.

My problem is that my painting speed is about the same as Rhamag's. If this is over 2 issues then presumably we need to finish in time for Firebase 7. As long as Firebase 7 is coming out in 2009...

Chaos and Evil
07-01-2008, 12:09
Firebase 7 is about 5 months away at this point. :)

If you don't make the final deadline, then you can put in a little text explaining why you didn't!

Firebase is a magazine for sensible people, and we know that our contributors aren't perfect, unlike White Dwarf where everything is always awesome and the newest army always wins. ;)

I shall have a word with the guys in the Bath store tommorow morning. I beleive we are just about to start necromunda, and I have some pit slaves (conversions) that need painting, and a friend whom I am intending to force to paint his spyrers (Yuk!)

I shall also find out about a camera for pictures, but My response is a positive one for now. I shall confirm tommorow if that sounds ok.

EDIT: with other players locally, it also means i could churn out a vague game description as well... I dunno...

I have some Imperial cruisers and frigates knocking around in my cupboard that I could paint up. I also just recieved my student loan and I get paid on the 15th, so I could rustle up a battleship and a few more ships without too much trouble.

Assuming of course that you are still looking for people for this project?

I'll give it a go, I've been intending to start a Spyrer gang for... um well however long it's been since they were released so this should persuade me to get my butt in gear. I can keep the Necromunda in Hull approach going as well, fancy doing a BatRep Floyd?

The only slight worry is that my camera is a few years old and so only a 4.2MPixel but if it isn't up to scratch I'm sure I can raid one from somewhere.

What kind of painting speed is wanted here? I'm about to get Epic Ferals from the SG comp and might wanna join. However with wife and kids, my painting speed is not very regular and fast. So if few formations a month speed is acceptable then I could join as well.

That speed is perfectly acceptable; I want this article to be about real people and their experiences of building an army, not an idealised regimented "I spent 50 this month and will spend 50 next month, and 50 next month..."

The mission statement is along the lines of "These are my thoughts as I build my army, and these are my miniatures"...

Chaos and Evil

I expect many will finish their first targets by issue one though (A Necromunda gang only takes a week to paint the initial starting gang).

how do you want everything submitted? I can sort reasonable pics and text (I'm almost a qualified journo now ! Yay :))

Did you want preview shots to decide on applicants suitability or should we just send stuff over?

When is the first deadline?

Sorry to ask lots of annoying Qs..

Jon.

BTW the articles I've got are currently about model assembly and a brief discussion of PPP. Not GW specific per sey, but interseting none the less. They both scored distinction at assesment if that helps. (here ends the self congratualation :))

I did submit an interview with Mr Abnett about the future of the HH series. Not sure if you guys got it so I can re submit...

Word .doc format with pictures packaged alongside / inside the doc... which makes things easier for our layout guy.

Send stuff to me (PM me for an email address), and I'll find the gold amongst the pyrite. :-)

Mid/Early Feb (Three weeks' time would be nice).

I've got a fairly large epic ork army I've really wanted to spruce up, this could be a good reason to do so... but I live far away from any other epic player, and also already own most of the models i'll be using, can I still submit?

It takes an interesting idea and the will to make an interesting article of it. Firebase doesn't normally look for anything specific and we accept many submissions. Simply private message me with a suggestion and we can discuss from there. The best I can suggest is to pick something you enjoy and think your fellow hobbyists would too.
