just reading the wordbeareres fluff, and he was Lorgars best friend, he helped Lorgar defeat the covenant and was inducted into the wordbearers

but to become a marine, you need to be in your teens (to about 18)

but this wouuld mean the emperor found Lorgar early on, within 18 or so years of him being cast asunder by the chaos powers, so this kind of makes the Great Crusade to discover the primarches short, 20 odd years to travel around the galaxy to re-unite humanity and discover the primarches seems a little bit odd to me, i always pictured it being a centuries-long mission

also the bit in the IA article about Kor Phaeron "should never have become a marine", is this about his age, or his lust for power

*Brusilov! :D*

just a thought

Well, at the time of the Crusade the technologies involving Marine creation were understood better than in the 41st Millenium. Thus, it was quite possible (and necessary, given that at the time they were the mainstay of the Imperial Army) to create Marines from any male, not just teens.

It should be noted, though, that besides the loss of needed tech one of the reasons behind current Marine recruitment policies is that by indoctrining potential candidates from a comparative short age (Marinification starts at what, 11?) the likelihood of massive defection, as in the HH, is diminished.

Basically, Kor Phaeron did not have to be in his teens when made a Marine. Pre-Heresy marine making was a whole lot more efficient, and could make marines out of adults (Kor Phaeron, Typhus, Luther etc). The problem was that making them when they had already grown up was denying he chance to brainwash them like the juveniles they make into marines in modern times. During the rush to create armies of supermen, they inducted people lusting for power like Kor Phaeron into the legions, which obviously had dire ramifications.

EDIT: Yep, what Goblinardo said.

most of sanguinius's loyal subjects on Baal were converted to marines, and a lot of the other instances of primarch discovery same thing happened.

so yeah adults could become marines back in the old days, now its the youngsters, with a heavy indoctrination program.

Not to mention the original Death Guard, who were presumably adupt when they were lead by Mortarion to overthrow the overlords of Barbarus, and were then inducted into the Dusk Raiders.

Basically, Adult conversion happened a lot during the crusade.
