is it worth fielding one at 500pts?

What would you field with it?

I was thinking mumak + serpent riders.

could it work?

How effective would it be?

I wouldnt use one at 500 points, maybe 750 and yes to 1000. It would take up too many points in a 500 point battle and you would onyl have a few points left for some haradrim

I'd use one in maybe 600+

Taking a Mumakil at anything less really limits the amount of points you can spend on characters which is a real bad thing.

There good for making interesting games at any level really. Maybe in a competitive list you'd want to use it in higher point games but they're pretty much always cool in narratives.

In the tournaments I've played in (500 points and 750 points) they have always played quite badly. On a 48"/48" table they do not have a very big area to walk and kill things as you would never, ever put the thing within 8" from a table edge. When they take the chance to move closer to the edge, you will see that they just get lots of wounds, lots of courage tests and subsequently fail them and run for the hills- bang, 400 points gone.

Their courage is a bad thing and if they fail it the enemy control it, which is a risk you will have to take if you want to use a mumuk. Plus the Mumuk is only defnce 7 which mean elven bows, dwarf bows and longbows only need 6's to wound it, the same as wounding a Uruk-Hai with a shield, so all they need to do is get 10 6's by the time they come to you and if its a big game there is ound to be a lot of shots and where wil lthey aim? Right at your mumuk.
