View Full Version : Currently on table... Admech&chaos

18-01-2008, 20:02
This thread will show what I have "in the works" at the moment, surprising as it might be.
After viewing those project logs from the likes of Apologist and Hortwerth, I just had to do an Adeptus Mechanicus army, and it will be in the spotlight for some time in this thread. Once in a while there will be some chaos space marines and their support units too.

The AdMech explorator fleet from Forge World Varang uses the rules of Witch Hunters, they have suitable amount of weird things and their close combat/shooting is not too *tough*, like with DH or space marines. Besides, the main entry, a knight titan is best represented in exorcist, IMO. There will be no sisters, this is mainly a tech-guard thing, with a number of servitors and those knights.

Anyway, lets start with an assassin servitor, Hunter-seeker if you will. It represents either Callidus or Eversor assassin, depending on my mood really.
All weaponry is either in the servo arm, or morphed at will from the mechadendrites. I'm reasonably happy with the result, and developed a new method of conversions at the same time (those coils or what you call them). :)

After that, some obligatory grunts, or skitarii. These will be storm troopers, and those tech priest are the veteran sergeants. Marvellous models, finally I have a reason to use them too. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0579.jpg Greenstuffed hoods, some carapace armour (or padding, if you will), tubes for fluids and power for the upgunned lasgun (hellgun), vox-sets for extra gear, and bad painting to cover it all up. Basic machine cultists (IG, hypaspists as Apologists likes to call them) won't have those armor plates or as many tubes, but they too will have hoods and vox-packs.

I'll take a break now, take some pics and be back with some more. Next up, the knight titan, in stage by stage presentation.

Mr Feral
18-01-2008, 20:22
Nice conversions, how did you do the coils?

18-01-2008, 20:33
Coils are paperclips, with 0,4mm silver cord (or that's what the label says) coiled around them tightly or not so tightly in places. Luckily the models are so small those gaps won't show too far :P Just wrap a few rounds of the cord around the clip (straightened of course ;) ), hold the other end with pincers, and roll until the clip ends. Or rather a bit before it ends, so it can be pinned to something too :P

Anyway, here is a pic showing what size the project currently is. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0593.jpgAlmost every model is second hand, and thus in hideous state, luckily most of them are only basecoated. Another titan will be added to the collection when I find cheap enough defiler, or gather enough money for a new one.

As promised, here is the Knight titan (exorcist): the beginning (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0584.jpg), and on it's feet (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0586.jpg), then with some (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0589.jpg)more plating and coils+tubes added. Finally the titan as it is atm, and http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0592.jpg a side view (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0590.jpg) for the intrested.

Enormously fun project to do, I'm happy with how it turned out. It is still in the working state, some more coils or something could be added. That defiler kit is very flexible. The rest is forming into a vindicator, you'll see it in time...

*I'm able to post these so fast, as I have a backlog of unposted images. Soon I'll have to actually do some work to be able to show something new :o *

18-01-2008, 23:33
Ok, so that did not pick your interest, that is fine. All normal people are asleep anyway... For a bedtime reading or whatever ( :wtf: ), I'll post some pics of the chaos army I promised. A Predator, that can transform itself to a rhino in only few seconds! :o
"Rhino mode on" WIP (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0567.jpg) and "Predator mode on" WIP http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0569.jpg. It looks better painted, promise. :P

Or maybe not, predator mode on, painted: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0581.jpg. But it works perfectly! Dissassemble! (http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/?action=view&current=DSCN0582.jpg)
:P Predator with obvious weapons, or rhino with extra armour!

Good morning everyone. I finally managed to get my hands on some vox-backpacks, some 30 of them. This means, that I can finally light the brake and start to work on the basic grunts. Everyone will be wearing a vox-backpack, gives a bit more techy feeling to them I think. With my abilities there won't be any plasticard armour sculpting or anything, I'll stick to ready bits, GS and those coils. Anyway, here's what I'm hoping to get at least partially painted today.http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0594.jpg I already glued the vox sets on to them, and the last 5 storm troopers. As you can see, there's still some green stuffing to do in that pic. Time to do some magic...
Ok done :D Now, it is painting time (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0595.jpg). Or, what do you think should I try to put some tubes to the basic machine cultists too? Now stormies are separated by 2 tubes and armour plates, but would the armour plates be enough? Are cultists tech enough as they are? They are fine by me, but...

19-01-2008, 20:45
Ok, without input I did not put any tubes to basic cultists, at least now stormies are a bit easier to separate from the others. Anyway, I did not manage to paint all I intended to (took too long breaks or something apparently), as I changed the paint scheme a bit I had to go back and redo 9 previously painted stormies too. Here is what I got painted today. 15 soldiers, not too bad, the morning wen't by greenstuffing them. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0598.jpg

Love the work on the knight titan. I keep trying to fins an excuse to build an upright defiler.

You might get more feedback on your models if you posted the pics directly into the thread, or made the links clearer. As it is, I almost skimmed straight passed them al, thinking there were no pics to see

20-01-2008, 00:07
Thanks for the tip (and the comment!), didn't think of the possibility of my linked images going unnoticed to some people. Must have been one of a kind-project log "without pictures" :D I Edited some of them to direct IMG-tags, so at least some of the "gems" are easily seen.

The titan was a joy to work with too. Just keep looking, there are many vehicles which could be represented with biped defilers.

Currently painting the Titan Techpriest from Forge World, gorgeous model with very frail servo arms. I'll post pics of it tomorrow when it is finished, in the meantime may your eyeballs and nervous systems be ravaged by the hideous picture of converted obliterators:

20-01-2008, 00:08
i agree with corai

however, some nice stuff you have there, particularly the knight titan. I would be interested to see more admech, as everyone loves skitarri!:D

20-01-2008, 10:56
Ask, and you shall receive. I managed to paint the tech priest further up in the night before going to sleep, the morning went by fixing all the mistakes I did when my eyes couldn't stay open. Anyway, the Ach-Magos Militaris and his pals: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0602.jpg and a groupshot from behind (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0601.jpg). The guy with a hand axe and laspistol is of course cult adept, or junior officer of the IG platoon. GS-hood, a filed up-axe (trying to form a cog-like shape out of it) and a handswap, basis of the model was some old commissar. The techpriest have only some tubing added, and the handswap on the other one. Priest (what to call it, I don't know yet) has only a GS hood, and the arch-magos hasn't been converted a bit.

Nice to hear you too like these :)

Oh well, back to painting the rest 16 already converted guardsmen/cultists...

20-01-2008, 14:33
Aaaand done! only some 20 similar men to do, but they will have to wait as I don't yet have backpacks for them. So it is time to start painting that titan or servitors next. Now would be a fine moment to tell, if there should be anything more added to the titan before painting?
Todays group (they will all be based at the same time, about the same style as those already based by previous owner).

20-01-2008, 16:10
I think you should ad some kind of head to the titan.
And maby some kind of antenna on the shoulders/back.

20-01-2008, 17:48
Good call! I'll try to loot my friends bits boxes, as I don't have suitable head or antennae. IG vehicle accessory sprue should contain the antenna, but what kind of head... Local TK players don't have bone giants, so that skull is off. :/

20-01-2008, 18:27
The force is looking nice, Tech-Adept...

You're using a lot of greenstuff for the hoods and so forth, which I think is great a fully converted force of tech-guard is going to look fantastic. That said, the tubing looks a little fragile (if it's all greenstuff). I'd use a low E string for cabling you can pick one up for a coupla quid from a music store, and it'll save you a lot of time and effort.

Can I recommend the robot head bit from the Defiler sprue as the head for your knight? It's the bit that the skull/horned mask fits on.

Keep up the good work!

22-01-2008, 18:24
:o The venerable one himself... Anyway, having a tougher than normal schoolweek so not much updating is coming before weekend, but I did buy the second defiler kit and order another whirlwind missile battery so bits for second knight titan are here. I'll try to make it a bit more action-like, and not just standing there pouring missiles to its feet like the first one :)

Anyway, thanks for the tip about that head-issue. The first defiler was second hand and did not come with any head options, but I already looted the new box and here is the first titan now:
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0604.jpg, and a side view (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0605.jpg). Added IG vehicle comm set and a head from the defiler kit, snapped some tubes away as they did not hold on too well. Oh well, next I'll have to paint that one or some more cultists...

22-01-2008, 18:53
Looking good Oberon!
For myselfe, I'm getting my fw chaos renegades tomorrow, I'll start converting my skittari so soon we'll be three ad-mech builders on the forum.

22-01-2008, 19:20
Yay! The cult spreads like a virus! :D

22-01-2008, 22:49
It sure does:)

23-01-2008, 09:44
Using the Exorcist rules is a good idea for the Knight sufficiently randomly powerful! Of course, you need to get some paint on the beast now. :)
What're the plans for your colour scheme?

23-01-2008, 16:44
Indeed. There really are no better mixes of power, availability (to WH), and role on battlefield than the exorcist. AM might be the army of choice for those looking for style and conversion possibilities (it is for me, I got tau for my power gaming "needs"...) but it still is no fun to lose all the time->knights to the rescue. Predator would have been the second option, but as I'm not playing SM then no.

I'll start on Saturday, but it will be mixture of red, black, boltgun and white. The leg shields will be red with white rims, the legs will be boltgun metal, torso might be black, but then again so should be legs to not accentuate (is that a word?) the separation of torso&legs... Oh well, maybe highlighting black legs with boltgun metal, or something :)
With this palette there is not too much room for variation, but Grimm&darggg is the way to go anyway :)

25-01-2008, 10:58
I'll start on Saturday...
Me=cheat, apparently. The titan is 96% finished as I see it, basing (some rubble and maybe COD ruins or whatever suitable I find, something bigger than with normal models anyway, and a techpriest) and maybe couple quick fixes before saying it is done. Anyway, I'm not doing those things now, but then when I'm ready to base this army. Oh why I'm babbling, you're only interested in the pics, right? ;)
The yet unnamed knight titan of knight world Varang X, here it is:
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0611.jpg and behind (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0610.jpg). I might even add a loincloth or something to it, but next up is yet more cultists, as I got a nice little batch of 12 vox backpacks from a pal...

27-01-2008, 18:06
When you start cheating, you just can't stop. I did paint the backpacks, but couldn't bear to start converting the lot. I did start working on the lascannons though, as thus far I've only done basic cultists and skitarii (stormies). http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0613.jpg
The basic IG infatry lascannon, cut the power cable in two and connected the gunner by the shoulder with it, and added some coils to further attach the gunner. Bit more bionic arms than might be needed (these are basic guardsmen, anyway), but hey, at least they look fitting for the army. And yes, those are SM heads under two of those hoods. Only backpack is done, these are 2nd hand models again.

EDIT: It might not look like it, but this project is advancing. Here's a groupshot of the models currently waiting to be based. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0614.jpg
From left to right: front row 2 squads of Skitarii (IST) with their vets, Arch-magos and Hunter-servitor, behind them the knight titan, and 2 squads+command of machine cultists. Only 3 servo skulls, and I have a legal army (but very small) painted. yay.

27-01-2008, 19:45
Those Obliterators are exceptionally disturbing.

28-01-2008, 06:23
Those Obliterators are exceptionally disturbing.
In a good way, I hope? :)
As those were only WIP (no basing that is, painting was done), I'll give you a groupshot of those, even though you might not want to be disturbed again...http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0617.jpg
And from the other (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0616.jpg) side. Fluffwise they are tzeentchian renegade termies, who got the obliterator virus on a fallen forge world, while searching arcane knowledge for their master Ahriman. Modelwise they are just plastic termies+lots of GS+weapons.

I've just finished converting the hoods for the next batch of cultists, after these I have 3 squads+command.

29-01-2008, 12:56
Oh why I'm babbling, you're only interested in the pics, right? ;)
You know us too well!

The yet unnamed knight
Have some ideas: *throws ideas*
Coronus Pium
Imperio Numine
Primus Est
Dictatio Ferox
Ideo Supremum

Knight looks spiffy presumably a Warden class, given the long-range weaponry. If it's not too late, I'd suggest that you use a modelling knife to carefully trim the points from the armour edges. It gives a very chaotic look, and a few minutes careful cutting and repainting will make it look much more Imperial.
The half-and half head looks great, by the way. If you do decide to go back and alter him, then why not cut a slit in the middle of the skull and insert one of those cogs you have on his shins? That'll give him a little cog-shaped halo, that would both look cool and also further move the imagery away from chaos.

Finally, I think a little work with inks would do wonders for your army. I use a yellow ink wash over my reds to give them some punch, and I think this would work well for yours, too. Also, the white looks a touch bright for my taste. I did the exact thing you did, but eventually it irked me too much, and I went back and repainted all the white with bleached bone. This is still light enough to look white when next to the red, but it complements red much better.

I like the cabling very much turquoise and orange are a really unusual complement to red, but you've made them work well.

With regards to your Lascannons, can I suggest you add something below the waists to the implanted skitarii? It'll help give a sense of realism the area directly below the waist looks a bit flat and cut-off at the moment. Further cabling would be cool a bit like your hunter-killer servitor.

29-01-2008, 13:38
Thank you for your comments :)

I think I'll not dare to start knifing the titan anymore, I'll ruin it anyway  Sadly I'm run out of those cogs, I'll try to find some real cogs or something from my parents house, otherwise that halo-idea is quite out. I did think of that too, but not by actually sticking the cog *in* the head. :P
*EDIT* Oh you meant only the points, not the whole rims. That I think I could do.

The white started to bother me a bit too, while painting the titan (as it has much more of it than the others). I'll definitely try the bleached bone, and that yellow ink shall have a go too. I've inked those red parts black thus far, trying to darken them a bit.

I was pretty lost with those tubes, as so many of my colours where either decidedly left out (light blue, being THE main colour of all my other armies) or already in use elsewhere (red), or otherwise unsuitable (browns, IMO). Nice to hear they actually look at least ok :)
Coming to think of it, those lascannons do look like they were floating over nothing... In my reference images they were not so cleanly cut straight from the waist, somehow it didn't occur to me to put something there too... I'll add some more cables, there's not much else to do for them right now :D

I'll make remake the lascannons and trim those rims after finishing these servitors. I'm almost done painting the heavy bolter servitors (retributioners) and hunters (DCAs).

17-02-2008, 12:56
beware th wrath of the AM :D i love the titan it's fantastic and the lascannoniers are brill

i really like your obliterators too it's a great way of making cheap obies and im going to steal that idea for myself

17-02-2008, 13:09
Woops, sorry for letting this thread sink so low. I'm clearly having difficulties to concentrate on one project here. The AM is atm at 1300pts painted but not based-mark, I have all the bits I need to re-do hunter-servitors (death cult assasins) and another titan, which will take the list to playable level of 1500. School and vampire counts are taking their time too. +I painted a warband of daemons for Helldorado.

You're welcome to steal the idea, they were fun to do and have performed well+everyone has understood what models they are representing (some mark of succes). :)

Oh, I added the coils for lascannons and trimmed those rims on the titan+changed the white bleached bone for arch-magos and tech adept. Pics following soon... Next week I'll start getting those servitors together, or maybe the titan. Starting again is the difficult part.

Those arco-flagellants are the current counts as hunter-servitors/DCAs, but I'll make some new ones from guardsmen, coils, and old epix land raiders (track units)... Some painting mistakes there too, it is good to take pics so I can notice where the mistakes are. ^^

And even the spare parts of the defiler go to good use! Behold the Vindicator of Thousand Sons legion, currently unpainted. 2 painted spawns next to if to show the size.

26-02-2008, 14:52
No new units made, YET. I have finally managed to paint nearly all my other minis to a state I can bear leaving them for a while, and concentrate on Adeptus Mechanicus again. AM does not like being second, it must be the one or not at all. Anyway, this morning went by, basing all my minis, 150 in total (skeletons and admech).
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0622.jpg Still haven't figured out what to put on the knight titans base, so that is still to be done. Next I'll start doing those hunter servitors...
I'm so happy this starts to look like an army, now when it is based! Well worth the pain in the back when sitting on the floor basing all those, and these too (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0623.jpg)!

26-02-2008, 15:36
They really look great when arrayed like that, Oberon – great work. I wasn't sure if the backpacks were going to work, but now they're all together, I get a real bristling feel of cables and wires that's very fitting for the Cult.

I much prefer the titan with the trimmed-down banding, too.

If I might make a suggestion on the painting; try adding a very (very!) dilute wash of purple to the backpack lights and to the skin.

On the yellow lights, a purple glaze will make the yellow pop, and also tie it slightly closer to the rest of the colours you've used. It'll be a very subtle (barely noticable) effect, but well worth it. On the skin, it'll add a nice level of shading and texture.

If you're still searching for basing inspiration for the knight, I'd stick with a desolate area – perhaps a couple of spare skitarii running alongside it?

Keep up the good work!

04-03-2008, 09:44
Thank you! I'll try the purple wash in the near future, but not yet. I found the inspiration and motivation needed to restart the progress on this project, finally. Yesterday I converted and painted (very quick) the hunter servitors (DCA), they look a bit more techy than those arco-flagellants (and add to the conversion percentage too, arcos were straight from the box, lame :P ). Anyway, to the pics!
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0625.jpg very fast shot, the middle one has giant wrench-like arm (a spare hand from a GW servitor), all other hands are those coils/mechadendrites again. The chassis is epic land raider, and torso is of course a cadian shock trooper. Some lucky machine cultist got a "promotion" :D

But that is not all! Oh no, not at all. The dreaded another knight titan is also beginning to form up. I had filed the triangles from the rims already, but this morning finally found time to build it. Legs are sawn and torso is almost build up, a lot of work is still to be done. In the pic you can see the main components of a knight titan, I've already glued the legs together, next pic will come in the evening, showing a pose hopefully. I'll have to find another surplus CD and try some dryfitting before the gluing, this will not be "legs next to each other, standing still"-knight, hopefully.

04-03-2008, 17:03
And as promised, a knight titan has risen to waist-level! http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0626.jpg, yes that's Iron Maiden cd as a base, and those pins+glue stains will be cleaned before I add basecoat. Had bit of a trouble while gluing those legs, so had to take extreme measures like those. Here is a pic from the side, to show how upright this one is. (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/Oberon_/DSCN0627.jpg). Let's hope those legs can hold to the cd, with only those little points in the claws. I'll add GS later to it.
