Saw this on Digg.com this morning.

"Largest Land Vehicle... ever?"

When I saw that giant sawblade I thought... well, you know what I thought.

Well, that is a German coal excavator and it moves with a little more than 1 kph ^^. Hardly worthy of being a Gargant.

I stand corrected and chastised for my inadequate offering.

How can something so small, so limited in ability and so expensive make it's money back? Another field I have zero knowledge in. Cool thing. Wasn't it on discovery?

*edit* I changed the link to a better one with more pictures. Be sure to check out page 2 of that site.

I recommend going on to page 2 as well, just for fun.

That site should be called "gargantgasm.com"

Funny, I thought it was a photoshop of something I saw from the game Borderlands. Then I realized... Holy hell, that thing's real!

Crazy!

You know when you've played too much 40K (or Orks) when you look at the first picture in the thread and immediately think "Needs more dakka" ...

Absolutely perfect set for the climax to a James Bond movie, I think.

I seem to remember an old thread in 40k background where we discussed this thing (or whatever the record-holding open-cast mining machine is).

Small is good.
Weight: 13500 tons
Length: 225m/246yards
High: 96m/104yards
Wide: 45m/49yards
It moves 240000 cubicmetres per day.

@Orbital: as always I forgot the damn smiley. So here it is: Well, that is a German coal excavator and it moves with a little more than 1 kph ^^. Hardly worthy of being a Gargant. :)

Obviously I still get that politeness thing wrong in English after all those years ;)

Here's the link to Thyssen-Krupp's website where you can look at the other stuff they build:

It's very tricky. I didn't realize English isn't your first language. Very subtle things with humor are hard to translate. Anyhow... no worries. :)

The huge thing is made to extract brown coal from the surface. It digs huge holes into the landscape and separates the brown coal from the rest of the earth, leaving dead land behind. One area they destroy is near Cologne, the other in Eastern Germany (perhaps a third one near Braunschweig, in central Germany). People living there and losing their villages plus environmentalists fight against this practise. The huge amount of surface near brown coal makes it more or less economically, at least for a long time (I guess nowadays, it only survives with huge state subventions).

I think I just had a ghazkull moment, who's gonna join my WAAAAGH :)

You just know the driver is itching to take for a spin at something worth mashing (If it went faster anyway).

Well, even if I dislike the task this machine was build for and brown coal should be burned in hell instead of Eastern Germany, this thing looks so very impressive. And my geek-o-meter tells me that I have to like it.

So paint it red, slap two of the Dora cannons http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/SchwererGustav.jpg on either sides and mount some Katjuschas on it. Oh, and maybe a crane with a wrecking ball for more cc action?

The Dora was also built by Krupp, so maybe the meks from Krupp were responsible for starting the Aaaaaaaaaargh!Germany under Aaaaaargh!Hedidnīttakehispills!boss Adolf "Snotling" H.?

49 tonnes give or take a couple.
That thing chewed up and spat out a 50t vehicle.
