Hey guys, new Guardman here. Was blessed by the Immortal Emporer this Christmas. Ok maybe not the man himself but my family comes pretty close right? After collecting and playing GW since Epic Space Marine I have finally gotten "dollies" as a present. Was given a Baneblade, a Leman Russ and 10 cadians. So, since I can't do much with that I followed it up by picking up a box of shocktroops, the command squad and a Battleforce. oh and the Codex. Hopefully a good start to a good army. Just had to throw this on the forum, been thinking about it for awhile now.

Heh, it must be the first time anyone has got a Baneblade as part of his starting kit. :p Welcome to wh40k! ;)

Welcome to the Guard! My only suggestion would to be pick up a Bassie or three. Indirect fire often goes hand in hand with my static gun lines. :D

If you have the spare cash ( :rolleyes) ),I would recommend the gaurd company offer from direct. I say this because if your going to "get into" the gaurd, you will eventually want that many men anyways and through smart basing, you can stretch it to cover more then actually comes with the box.
For example, it comes with 18 heavy weapon teams, I based the heavy weapons seperate so can field 18 of EACH heavy weapon.
You 2 russes are pretty much all you'll need unless you play apoc or multiple FOC.
TheIron fist squad box is a good deal as youll want t to get a couple chimeras as well and the cheap men that come in it are extra fodder.
I am in the same boat your in, Just starting due to x-mas gift. I just got a different "set". Instead of what you got, I got the company.
Good luck to you and me both. ;)

I would recommend a hellhound or two, but first read the codex, map out what you have, then map out what you'd like to get, saves money in the end.....

Buy from online shops that offer 20% off. this will allow you to buy more, more easily.

I do shop online. Got the name of the one I use now from a post on warseer. Free shipping makes all the difference in the world when it comes to 20% discount. Along that line, I figured it out that it's almost a wash buying the company deal over buying BF's at $67 a pop. Lose out on some of the officers and specialists, make up for it with Russ's.
I'm not new to 40k, been collecting since 3rd ed. Playing since the end of 3rd beginning of 4th. Main army is Necron, the warrior models were what did it for me. Also have a collection of Tau, the obligatory Marines (but cooler cause they're LotD), and a small chaos force (only cause I got a killer deal on a 3rd ed BF on ebay). When I got the Tau it was a toss between them and IG. Tau won cause of the suits. Gotta love the Anime!

Ah, ok, fair enough. I started with Tau, they're fun.

On the hellhound thing: they're good. They can be manufactured more cheaply with a chimera and baneblade heavy flamer parts, if you made the baneblade and not the hellhammer.

That does look nice. The tanks look a bit small, but still do the job.
