I'm just trying to gauge interest in an IG Special Forces RPG.

The setting is this: A squad of Imerial Stormtroopers has been assigned the task of infiltrating and neutralizing a heavy artillery battery during a siege on a city. More information will follow in the form of squad breifings.

What I need is:

One Corporal.

One Lance Corporal.

Two sharpshooters.

One demolitions expert.

One special weapons trooper.

Any number of generic Stormtroopers.

Ranks and roles can be doubled up, so the Corporal can also be a Sniper.

I will be taking the role of the Sergeant, in order to maintain some semblance of control over the narrative.

You will all be soldiers from the same Stormtrooper regiment (The Cadian XIIth), so you will all have the same armour and uniforms. However, you will not all have been part of the same unit. So you can have varied equipment and levels of experience. It would be nice to have some noobs as well as some veterans.

You may only have equipment that a veteran stormtrooper may reasonably be assumed to carry. If you want anything particularly 'out there' you will have to come up with a very creative back-story and really sell it to me. The special weapons trooper can take his (or her) pick from: Flamer, Grenade Launcher, Plasma gun, or Melta gun. Sharpshooters will have sniper rifles of their choice (again, nothing too fancy without a good back story).

You will only have what you put in your description, so make sure you include things you will want to use, like rope and flashlights. Although there will be some standard kit that everyone is assumed to have:

Medkit - Bandages, anti-biotics, needle and thread, painkillers, tweezers and magnifying lens.

Rations - Enough processed rations for twelve days in the field, and water purification tablets.

Canteen - Three litres of water.

Bedroll - Waterproof oversheet and sleeping roll.

Things like grenades, ammo and other parephenalia are left up to the individual troopers discretion. Brew kits, extra sidearms, knives and lho sticks are all popular items.

What you need to put in your character description:

Name - obvious.

Rank - again, obvious.

Role - also quite obvious.

Background - A short description of their history in the Cadian XIIth Stormtrooper regiment.

Equipment - As described above. What other items beside the standard kit they carry.

There you go guys. Go nuts. And be warned, powergaming will be punished.

I'm signing up as the Grenadier. What kind of Grenades(apart from the obvious Frag and Krak) could realistically be used in this scenario?

Can I be the Medic?

I know that there isn't one in the 'roles' list...but every squad needs one.

Got any more room? Is this a kill team set up? Is this going to have a standard squad set up or is it going to be an ad-hoc situation?

edit- hmm. Ok I looked over the apps and it looks to be 2 snipers already and I assume the grenadier is the special weapons guy, so I guess I'm grabbing a rifleman role if it's still open?

I'm gonna go ahead and start up a profile in the meantime (WIP)

Looking good guys.

A few things I forgot to mention - Standard stormtrooper helmets come with comm systems, light amplification visors and re-breathers. So any kind of extra comm system people include in their profile can be used as a back-up.

If no-one mentions any different weapons in their profile, you will be assumed to carry a hellgun and hellpistol. Obviously the snipers and the grenadier are carrying their respective special weapons instead of a hellgun.

diddimz - Sure thing. Just write up a profile and we're good to go.

Commander X - Theron Bright can use regular frag and krak grenades (say, six of each as standard kit, more if you want) and lets say he can carry a few each of haywire, tear gas and smoke grenades. These aren't standard issue through, so let's assume only two or three of each as a max.

GamesmasterZ - Sure. Do up a profile and we're good to go.

Bmaxwell - No problems mate. I'd probably give him a hellgun as well, or else he'll miss out on any longer range firefights.

Pillx - Plenty of room mate. The squad is based loosely around regular Guard squads with tidbits from real life thrown in for extra realism. This particular squad is being formed from remnants of other squads and companies. The Imperium is a pretty large place, so I'm assuming there's a bit of leeway for non-regular squad formations, especially in continued battle situations

Another question... How far out is the objective and how long are we expected to be in the field? I ask because it would be needless weight to cary more items than we need, such as a weeks worth of food for a 2 day mission for instance. So I'm trying to adjust my load to match the mission...

.

Adept
28-09-2005, 06:01
We'll be dropping in by Valkyrie about five klicks from the target. We are expected to be in the field for about 48 hours. You can leave your extra rations at base, just don't complain if things go awry and we are out there for longer...

Pillx
28-09-2005, 07:20
How much will the food weigh per day's worth? From a realistic standpoint, if we go into combat, we'll likely dump the packs on the ground and if things go bad we probably won't be able to go get them back. Then again, if things go bad in a 40k setting, we're likely goners. ;)

5 clicks and 48 hours... Is exfil predetermined? Will we be needing some kind of signal booster or heavier coms set up for exfil? Let me know if I'm asking too many questions... :p

edit- woohoo. More questions :D
What kind of environment are we going to be travelling in?
What are the specs on the Hellgun (number of shots per power pack?)

I'm just glad I'm not the guy with the heavy bolter! My pack's looking about right in weight for a real life infantryman as it is...

Fluff stuff - Hellguns can either run from a backpack power source, or from a power pack. I honestly don't know how many shots a gun gets per power pack. All the codex says is 'many', so I'd assume 45 or 50. I also assume the food is extremely light, astronaut style stuff. Not too much weight at all. I mean, provisioning ten million guardsmen would take a hell of a supply chain. The munistorum must have some kind of special technology for processing and packaging food.

'Exfiltration' is pre-determined. This will be covered during the mission briefing in the IC thread.

The terrain will be urban, in a temperate environment during a cool season. Average expected temperatures around 15 celcius during the day, and 2 or 3 degrees at night.

Heavier comms set is a good idea. Didn't think of that. Someone can volunteer for that if they want, if not I'll take it.

There'll be more info in the briefing, at the start of the IC thread, and there'll be some time between the briefing and the drop, so there'll be a chance to change equipment or pick up anything you forgot.

You sound like you've got some current or ex military experience, which will come in handy for keeping things real. If I'm doing anything silly, or you've got any ideas, speak up!

Commander X
28-09-2005, 13:07
Name:Theron Bright
Rank: Stormtrooper
Role: Grenadier
Background:Theron has never been a particulary good shot with any kind of small weapon - and he won't admit he needs glasses - so he was given a weapon with which hitting the target directly is not entirely an issue, a Grenade Launcher. Although he has now been in the Guard for quite some time, he is still a lousy shooter and anything beyond "shoot the red things on your visor" is going to be difficult for him.

Another point that should be mentioned is his general disregard for the property of other persons, the multiples of the Tear and Smoke Grenades are evidence of that. Once he even dared to steal from the AdMech - and strangely enough got uncaugt - 'earning' himself a grenade of which he doesn't know the function himself.(OOC:The Haywire one)

Equipment:
-Standard Stuff(I'm not typing all that again :p )
-Grenade Launcher with Bayonet
-Two diagonal belts forming an X containing 6 Frag and 7 Krak Grenades
-One horizontal belt containing 2 Tear gas Grenades, 1 Haywire Grenade, and 3 Smoke Grenades
-Full Carapace Armour
-Helmet with Heat Vision
-Weapon Maintenance Kit
-4 Normal Frag Grenades and 2 Normal Krak Grenades in pockets.

Heavier comms set is a good idea. Didn't think of that. Someone can volunteer for that if they want, if not I'll take it.

If it's as hefty looking as what we see on the minis, I'll likely only carry a spare battery or two since my character's already got some of the load from the resident demolitions guy.

There'll be more info in the briefing, at the start of the IC thread, and there'll be some time between the briefing and the drop, so there'll be a chance to change equipment or pick up anything you forgot.

Ok. Almost done with my equipment list then... You'll find that I've been editing my character post for equipment.

You sound like you've got some current or ex military experience, which will come in handy for keeping things real. If I'm doing anything silly, or you've got any ideas, speak up!

My military experience isn't complete (I would say 'unfortunately' but I might be fortunate as I am but I guess we'll never know... ;) ) I was only in the early stages of the US university level officers' training program -a bit of the high school level as well.

On the side, you might want to list the "Infantryman's Uplifting Primer" as standard issue. I believe it's a death penalty for not being able to produce an issued copy upon request by a superior officer or (especially) a commisar. And you wonder why I hate those guys... >.>;

I'm interested in perhaps being a jack-of-all-trades type specialist, kind of like a battlefield scavenger. Sort of has a knack for improvisation, but doesn't really have any training or official proficiency in anything, but can makeshift build and use comms, demolitions, etc. to one degree of efficiency or another. Sort of like a mekboy, but not, if you catch my meaning.

A thought. Maybe the hellgun power pack can be adapted as a power source for certain medical equipment (that and the refridgerated pack for the blood and such) like a defibrillator or rotorytool/electrical saw (keep that thing away from me! :p )

name: Emka 'Aurora' Guivere
rank: Private
role: Heavy commsman, cobble-togetherer of various contraptions from generally questionable materials, and reservoir of not-quite-witty one-liners
background: Guivere was the orphaned bastard son of Commissar Elijah Shekha and as such inducted into the Schola Progenium to become a servant of the Emperor. He showed great interest in tinkering with machinery and luckily never crossed path was any Magi while attending. He showed no natural talent or interest for logistics or combat or leadershipt or any of the other qualities the Schola looks for, and for awhile, his fate was uncertain. Whether by clerical error or poor judgement, he was inducted into the stormtroopers, where he was hardened into a soldier by their thorough training regimen.
He joined the Cadian IVth 'Wildfires' and was with them until he recieved a disciplinary transfer to the XIIth due to an altercation with a superior officer that ended with him in the company of the Sisters Hospitallier for some time.
Though initially, he had little aptitude for soldiery, he looks the part as much anyone else in the Stormtroopers. A twitchy man, he can nearly always be seen tapping something or pacing when not busy. He has a particular liking for spiced Lho sticks and is nearly always followed wisps of their fragrant smoke.
equipment:
Medkit - Bandages, anti-biotics, needle and thread, painkillers, tweezers and magnifying lens.
Rations - Enough processed rations for twelve days in the field, and water purification tablets.
Canteen - Three litres of water.
Bedroll - Waterproof oversheet and sleeping roll.
Telescoping Engineering Shovel- Retractable all-purpose shovel
Electroluminen- Has been tinkered with to the point where it can run off of lasgun power cells, has a red filter for stealth purposes
'Insitio' Pattern Voxcaster- a rather large comm system equipped with tools for jamming and boosting signals among other things
Flares- 4 Oxy-Phosphor flares
Frag Grenades- 2 Frag Grenades
Knife- Small nonreflective black all-purpose knife
'Sortis' Pattern Hellgun-Bullpup variant hellgun of Ryzan origin, light modifications were made to its infrascope placing a tiny skull in the centre of the crosshairs, and an auto ejector was added for speed of reloading
'Aestimus' Pattern Autopistol-a Martian design, it barrel has been elongated and modified to eliminate muzzle flare and drastically reduce sound, however, it is no longer capable of automatic or burst fire
Toolkit- Midsized metal box containing various bits and bobs, as well as a very basic set of tools and some solvents and things like that.
Bayonet- Useful for poking things with
Compass- Adjustable for different planets
Three and a Half packs of Spiced Lho Sticks- For when a gun is just too expedient
Lighter- Zippo style lighter
Collapsable Grappling Hook- Helps with climbing
Spare Power Cells- 10 extra all-purpose power cells
Hellgun Power Packs- 6 rechargeable packs with enough power for 40 shots
Autopistol Ammo Clips- 3 clips of autopistol ammo.
Suspensor plate-Guivere's most prized possession, a small antigravitic disc that he has disguised as power cells and attached to the inside of his pack
Ash- Small tin of black ash for dulling any shiny surfaces
Camo Paint- Camouflage paint kit for any exposed skin
Camouflage Carapace Armour- Gets in the way of weapons fire and helps him blend in
Infantryman's Uplifting Primer- Makes the Commissariat happy, which is always a positive thing
Water Purication Kit- Package of 40 dissolveable tablets

@Warlord Grubnatz: How exactly does that modified rail clip work? Because my understanding of railgun is that the ammo tends to be rather mundane stuff, but its magnetically accelerated to ludicrously high speeds. So it might better to try something else instead, as it would be useless or worse without a railgun itself.

Hey folks. I got around to pulling out my copy of "The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer" (I keep it with my IG army which I haven't played with for maybe 6 months.) Started leafing through it and found some interesting bits on equipment:

About the Primer itself: The documents must not fall into enemy hands -failure to do so is a death penalty. Failure to produce a copy at ANY TIME on request from a superior officer is a death penalty. "By order of the Departmento Munitorium."

Issued Equipment includes:
Attire
Combat Fatigues
Shirt
Undershirt
Socks x4
Undergarments
Greatcoat

There's more to the list and I'll post that later....

Notes about the lasgun:
Different types of clips -operates on a 19 megathule range and can (therefore) use any Departmento Munitorum sanctioned power packs. Has 2 settings: low and high. Low power has a whining sound, high power is a cracking cracking report. Both are distinct sounds. It has a cyclic rate of 220 shots per minute. The power cells are rechargable by plugging it into a power source, or over a greater amount of time by exposing it to light and/or heat. Placing it in an open fire works but shortens the cel's life span and reliability.

Neglecting the machine spirit of the lasgun will cause it to fail and is punishable by death. you must anoint the barrel with sacred unguent every day and before entering combat.

Naturally, one needs to chant the litanies when conducting business such as field stripping/cleaning/unjamming... O_o

[quote]@Warlord Grubnatz: How exactly does that modified rail clip work? Because my understanding of railgun is that the ammo tends to be rather mundane stuff, but its magnetically accelerated to ludicrously high speeds. So it might better to try something else instead, as it would be useless or worse without a railgun itself.[/qoute]

It's a Black Library item. I got it from the local game store when it first came out I think a year (or two?) ago.

ISBN: 1-84416-083-1
GW Product Code: 6071 0199 018

Some of the stuff in it is pretty silly but it's a fun novelty item. ^__^

To be perfectly clear, are we talking Games Workshop-esque moment of ambiguity to disguise the nonsensicality of a ill contrived plot device ‘speshul’, or the yet to be fully explained but definitely wasn’t just a random blunder ‘speshul’? ;)

Demolitions Expert John Ryan

Equipment: Lasgun, Demolition charges, melta bombs, plasma charges, Combat knife, (equipable as a bayonet as well)

Background:
From an early age John loved blowing things up, and before he was 10 he had already got in trouble countless times for creating home made bombs and explosives and using them on many of the animals, as he got older he set his targets bigger. His parents eventually grew sick of his misbehaviour and sent him away to join the whiteshields after giving him an ultimatum to stop with his hobby. In the whiteshields his talents excelled and it was not long before he was inducted into a demolitions squad in the Correlian 376th light Drop Troops. For over a decade he fought in various warzones, until finally he and a handful of others were all that were left of his once giant platoon. This squad of hardened veterans were soon split up, so that their services could be used to help other more needy units.

Slaz: Still room. Negatory on the Meltagun though. This squad already has a flamer, a grenadier and two snipers. Further special weapon specialists (that doesn't sound right...) would be assigned to other squads. Feel free to make up a nice grizzled veteran though.

Bmaxwell: Sorry dude, Smirmisher isn't an actual role in the squad. You can act however you want in the game, but your official designation is Ogard, Damon. Lance Cpl. Stormtrooper. There aren't any units designated as 'skirmishers' that I'm aware of in the Imperial Guard. And if there are, this isn't one of them.

Laudren: No worries mate.

Everyone: Once Laudren gets his character up, we'll start. If he forgets or misses his chance, we'll start without him.

Oh, and I'll put my character up later as well.

Name: Alexis Stukov
Rank: Vetern Stormtrooper
Weapons: Hellgun with scope, long kife and a hellpistol.
Imperial Guard Regiment: 'Redskin Deatheaters' of the Hellmore 154th
Background: Alexis Stukov started his career as a Stormtrooper when he single handly killed a termagaunt about to devour a Comissar. It was then he was promoted from the Schola to a full Stormtrooper and sent to the Hellmore 154th. In the regiment, Stukov has battled mainly Orks and Tyranids, suiriving the battles and becoming more and more wise to the Xenos movements.

He is adept at infiltrating, scouting and capable of driving vehicles regularly given to the guard, such as motorcycles and trucks. Stukov is a crack shot and prefers to blast the enemy out of existence before finishing off stragglers with his close combat skills.
Apearance: Reflective helmet, medium height, stocky, and looks imposing in his Stormtrooper armour. He has a long scar down one eye and a bionic eye inside the sockect from the attack. The bionic eye allows him to track enemy movement and gives him nightsight.

Okay, guys, making the IC thread now. Heres the Sergeant. Remember, he's not a game character, he's the method of control I'm using as the GM. Treat him like a regular character, but apart from directing the plot he won't be taking part too much.

Sergeant Adaias Thorn

An experienced warrior nearing the end of his active career, Thorn has been a serving Stormtrooper for twenty five years. Three times he has refused further promotion, preferring to lead men on the ground rather than send them to their deaths while he sits behind a desk. He has a high tolerance for non-regulation behaviour, but comes down hard on those who lack respect and discipline. He has twice been investigated, and exonerated for executing soldiers on the battle-field.

Thorn has made over 200 combat drops, and been part of countless operations. His face is riddled with small scars, and his left leg from below the knee is an expensive mechanical replica.

You only salute the highest ranking officer in the room.

NCO's (Non Commissioned Officers) are refered to by rank (eg: Sergeant, Corporal) and not Sir.

Gonna get around to adjusting my ruck properly for this mission this weekend...

More trivia than anything I guess but a standard combat load could get pretty heavy in real life. Actual practical field weight is probably about 45-75 pounds without the pack. The US Rangers hit Panama with a pack in the neighborhood of 160 pounds. A load of 55 pounds includes 210 rounds of ammo, water and food, for a 72-hour mission.
In the Rangers you have to be able to do a 12 mile march on a 45 pound pack at a minimum pace of 1 mile every 15 minutes...

Yeah, in the aussie commandos you have to do a 15 kilometer march with a 50 kilo pack in two hours.

Pillx

Yeah, in the aussie commandos you have to do a 15 kilometer march with a 50 kilo pack in two hours.

Ya. The standards I think are all pretty close for everyone.

About r/l jumping procedures, I won't go into the gritty details but some of it involves:
Red light is to ready up. There's the aircraft's Loadmaster who signals the Jumpmaster who works with the Assistant Jumpmaster. Everyone should have their gear on already and the process starts with standing in line where a series of checks are done (clear jump door, and check outside*, check yourself and the guy in front of you, blah blah), communication is done with a lot of shouting, hand signals, and a pat/smack/whatever. Jumpmaster gives a slap and the word "go" -you don't go unless you're given the proper cue.
Green light signals the jump, Jumpmaster and Assistant Jumpmaster goes last.

Landing involves dropping your kit on a tether which will land first. Stay relaxed. Remember the quick releases if you get caught up.

Question: Where's the designated landing point?

.

Question: Where's the designated landing point?

The landing point is in a ruined part of the city, specifically chosen because it is mostly uninhabited. Where individual people land, I'm leaving up to them. Once everyone is down, we'll get moving.

Adept
21-10-2005, 15:26
And what about snipers?

As in the snipers in the squad? Or enemy snipers in the rubble?

It would be helpful to have some kind of map :D.

Good idea. I won't be able to work on that until the end of the weekend though, I'm at the pistol range all morning tomorrow, then I work from 1700 till 2200, then from 2230 till 0700, then from 1130 till 1800. Then I sleep.

Brother Smith
21-10-2005, 17:57
Our snipers - we need somewhere discreet.

Maps are generally a good idea. I did one for my RPG and it was a good aid. Shame it wasn't a good RPG!

warlordgrubnatz
21-10-2005, 18:33
I dont thnk we will need maps...

Ruben crept into teh rubble and carefully knelt in the dust. he propped his rifle between boarded wood. He turned the focus knob and aimed the crosshair on the machine gun pinning the squad down. The crosshair moved up and down, he slowed his breating and then stopped, the scope stabalised. He focused on the firers head, clicking the zoom. He pulled the trigger, teh mans head splintered like a melon before the sound and trail were heard/ saw. The squad opened fire, taking out the loader in a hail of fire.

should be good enough.
