well not that bad really, but...

after playing chess with my housemate this afternoon we struck upon the the idea of making 40k based chess sets,

now i know this has been done before, but we were trying to work out what each side should have in it...

So for each race i am trying to find...

King
Queen
Bishop
Knight
Rook
Pawn

for SM

King Comander
Queen Librarian
Bishop Chaplin
Knight jump pack trooper
Rook Terminator
Pawn Tactical marine

SoB
King Inquisitor
Queen Cannoness
Bishop Priest
Knight Seraphim
Rook Retributer
Pawn SoB

so.. other armies? or changes to these?

I think the broadsides work...Personally I'd put the Crisis suit as the bishop and the Steath as the knight...

The Orkz I listed were chosen either for their weapons or speed...so if i applied that here...Stealth suits would be knights since they're short ranged and Jsj...Crisis I'd put as Bishops since they Can be long ranged...Missile pods and all...

Tyranids:
King - Hive Tyrant
Queen - ?
Bishop - Ravener
Knight - Gargoyle
Rook - Carnifex
Pawn - Termagant

I'm not sure on what should be Queen. As for size issues, these are not GW models... right?

I've thought about this a few times too, never actually got around to doing it though ;)
One thing I would do -
Go for a 'classic' matchup -
Ultramarines vs Nids
Guard vs Orks
You get the idea...

I'd also plan on sticking to models that fit on a moderatly sized board. So hive tyrants and broadside are out.

I like Orgyns as Rooks for IG.

This could be a lot of fun, though you'd need to make a pretty big chessboard for the 40mm bases...

I would have to say for orks
Warboss: King
Mekboy : queen

You need to make it 'Battle Chess' as well, and come up with some sort of combat sequence between models when they try to take.

Would be so much better as a computer game. Like in Star Wars, you could see the models march over, have a fight, and the victor stamp all over the loser.

Anyways.

Dark Eldar.

King - Vect
Queen - No Akei
Bishop - Haemonculi
Knights - Hellion
Rook - Incubi
Pawns - Warriors or maybe Grotesques

Revisited with Possessed as Knights

Shouldn't all chaos really have cultists as Pawns?

Yeah but I don't like to use them in my games :)

Seconded. I do like the idea of a mixed Imperial force fighting a Chaos force.

My vote goes for:

Imperial
King - Inquisitor
Queen - Chaplain
Bishops - Sisters of Battle
Knights - Grey Knights
Rooks - Tactical Marines
Pawns - Guardsmen

Chaos
King - Chaos Lord
Queen - Sorcerer
Bishops - Possessed or Cult Troop of choice
Knights - Lesser Daemon of choice
Rooks - Basic Marine
Pawns - Cultists

A little of everything, and if you keep everything on 25mm bases, you can use a basic chess board. But, if you are making 40k chess pieces, why not go a little further and make a 40k chess board?

A friend of mine painted an ork vs Ultramarines chess set a few years ago.
Ancient(standard) and Makari(back then: ghazkulls standard bearing grot sidekick) = kings
Calgar and Thraka(old mini, not the new dreadnought sized one) = queens
Librarians and weirdboyz as rooks
Assault marines and Stormboyz as knights
Devastators as castles
Bolter marines and bolter boyz as pawns.

Looked really awesome, and the heavy metal minis he used gave the game some weight (pun intended)

This has been on my 'must get around to it' list for ages. The only real comment that I have is that I would make the King a Standard Bearer. All previous suggestions have the King as the most powerful piece, but that is the Queen. The King is one of the slowest and capture means that the game is over. To me, that is the army standard.

I always see the knight a whatever that armies bike riding troops are. simply cause all the knight pieces I've seen are of a horse.

If this is crazy then I must be insane because me and my bro have been playing warhammer chest for over a year now! Here is our "army lists" :D

Me: Imperial Guard
King- Heroic Senior Officer
Queen- Commisar
Bishops- Priests (with Evicerators of course!)
Knights- Stormtrooper sarges
Rooks- Oygrns
Pawns- Guardsmen (perfect match really)

Scott: Space Wolves (viking enthusiest)
King- Lorgan Grinar
Queen- Wolf Priest Ulrik
Bishops- Rune Priest Terminator
Knights- Space Wolf Scout
Rooks- Iron Priests
Pawns- half Grey Hunters / half Blood Claws

he usually wins... but then again he has been in Chest club for the past 5 years so go figure ;)
