View Full Version : What superstious rituals do you have while gaming

I was just having a random stream of thoughts going around my brain about luck and coincidence in gaming and find that from personal experience (lone dark reaper killing ork warboss in combat! :p) that I get luckier rolls by praying to the dice gods quite alot. (This includes shaking the bone rattles and sacrificing goats on a stone altar, etc.) I was just wondering how you, personally try to make yourself get luckier dice rolls ingame!

Well, it seems that I have luckier dice rolls if I use my "lucky dice", a set of dice I bought at a local department store. they are not weighted or anything, they just seem to roll better. I also seem to when more when a specific model is on the table. I have played missions/games without him, and I always seem to lose those games. When he is in the army list, I win.

I used to believe that painted models were less likely to die than unpainted ones... now it is fact, as my (sole) opponent and I have a house rule that unpainted models suffer from -1 toughness...

I've got a couple of things which I do. I don't know if they truly do make my rolls luckier or whether I just perceive them to be luckier.

First off, I always say what I need to roll to be successful while I'm rolling. Usually "Come on six, please, I need sixes!"

I never use the same dice for rolling to hit and to wound. If they were successful the first time then I consider their luck used up for that turn and use other dice to roll wounds. It seems to be fairly effective, but I don't know for sure.

Finally, I never say missile launcher in a game, even if that's what I'm using, because missile has miss in the word. So I'll say whether I'm using krak or frag and just refer to them as launchers or call them rocket launchers.

When rolling dice...

1.) pick up dice
2.) Always roll the full spectrum, using blacks as special weapons and reds standard
3.) Clasp hands tightly, rub dice so they roll in my hand
4.) Rub twice, then loosen hands so their cupped, and shake twice
5.) Open hand annd shake twice one-handed
6.) Pour dice out.

I seldom fail a save if I execute this correctly.

I don't let anyone look at the dice (observing dice affects probabliities) and if i roll any one's for say 'to hit' i always use them on the 'to wound' roll

Serg. Lynchbox

I usually use my opponents dice and it gets them really mad when they see me make all my saves or wounding a bunch of his units. The only dice I use for my own is my scatter dice which I almost always get a direct hit at my target.

One man that works at a University told me that a professor has found out that you are more likely to get ones with cornered dice! So now I use Cornered dice for everything except LD and it's working out great! Is it just my power of trust that I'm more less like going to roll a one or is it really true? All Casinos use cornered dice, so it's a big possibility that it's true! Whatever it is, it's working!

Some guy told me that his friend in Oregon plays Khorn (before new ed) and to please the gods, he cuts himself and spreads his blood all over his red dice! ewwww :wtf:

I never use a handful of dice in the same combination of dice to be rolled.

Essentially I have enough dice to use new dice handful for every round :O

I also remove the ugliest models first.

Critical is having dice that match the color scheme of your army!

Usually, I call out loud all the requirements for the rolls needed; e.g., 4+ to hit, 3+ to wound, etc. This serves a dual function. My opponents always appreciate it, because I clearly specify which number are needed on specific dice and they're always aware of the exact numbers my army operates on.

The other function is to remind my models precisely what they need to do to win. I'm not looking for odds, I'm looking for success!

I believe that dice will roll what they are showing when you pick them up. So, I knock my dice around until they are showing 6s before I pick them up, unless rolling Ld (or somthing similar) then I pick up dice show 1s.

I have some "rituals" that I use during games.

I dont use the same dice that rolled successfuly to hit, on the to wound roll.
and if i a important roll I knock the dice twise at the table before trowing.

And I dont want anyone to touch my dice, or even worse use my dice in a game.

When I play my DH, I organize my dice in a Inquistional I. All with the 6 up, Since 666 is the chapter number of the GKs.

After that since its to hard to maintain the I, I organize my dice in groups of 6with the 6s up....someone once asked me if i was satanic....imagine trying to explain that I play Daemon Hunters whos holy number was 666 to someone who doesnt know the fluff....needlesss to say I got that wierd look alot.

Have 2 dice with the 1s up, and all the other dice with the 6s up., while the Scatter dice shows HIT! Also, on important rolls I throw the dice in te air 4 dice and say the names of the Chaos Gods: Tzeench, Khorne, Slaneesh, Nurgle. I never let anyone use my dice, and when I finally roll the dice itself, I always breathe out the names of the Chaos Gods and then the number I need to get.

Finnith
07-02-2008, 21:36
I keep my dice moving non stop throughout the game. The only time they stop being moved is after they have been rolled and are waiting on the next lot of rolling. Often keep 2 dice in 1 hand moving round like stress balls for any ld checks coming my way.

That might just be OCD kicking in cos whenever i see a bunch of dice i want to roll them.

Lol! Okay, I never use a sig. But I gotta say, I wanna use this quote. Hope you don't mind. Hilarious!

Never say "Anything but a one...."

This is one of my superstitions too. Also, our gaming group also uses it against the other guy as well. As the opponent is trying to roll for plasma, a terminator save, etc....you say, "Just don't roll a one". That's frighteningly effective too. :cries:

Critical is having dice that match the color scheme of your army!

A majority of the guys in my gaming group use this too. More for cool factor than for superstition.

A couple of my own:

1.) Never get upset when things start to look bad. First off, you shouldn't be too upset because its a game. Secondly, the dice tend to snowball the effect when you're angry. Your dice will roll horribly, and your opponent's dice will start to roll even better.

2.) Sort of related to the above rule....is to play for FUN. The less I care about the outcome, the better I seem to do with the dice. And even if the dice don't get better, you still don't care...so win/win. ;)

The way I roll my dice.

Not shake and pour, I keep my hands together and rub them together with the dice in between and then flick them out enmasse!

That and not calling my Kroxigor, Kroxigor. When I do, out of 10 attacks, I average 3 hits and 1 wound. Seriously.
I call them Dave instead, a far higher success rate.

Oh, and I never waste a single rail gun shot at a dreadnought on turn 1. It'll hit everytime, but never penetrate. 4 times I've played him, happened everytime.

never declare 'anything but a one'

Never call a missile launcher.. a missile launcher, it will miss'

If you really want a roll to happen, it never will.

One side is always unlucky turn 1,2,3 for dice rolls, then this swaps around turn 4,5,6.

The more shots you fire, the more misses statistically, i.e 4 heavy bolters from marines will hit the same as 4 big shootas for orks.

If you roll a 6 to hit, it will never roll a 6 to wound/pen, though i am starting to belive orks ignore this.

Also, I never ever state a preference for the roll; i.e "anything but a 1" or "I really need sixes"

Personally I have coloured dice that matches my army colour scheme... although that is more about theme than anything.

Not to mention the common chant of "1212" when my regular power armoured opponents' attempt their saving throws and "5566" for my non-power armour cover saves. Brings a laugh everytime.

I have friends that set up their entire dice pool to show 6s before a game, for a sign of good luck, and another mate that uses a new set from the dice pool rather than rolling those that already hit/wounded...etc.

In short, we are pretty superstitious

Sometimes a die will come to rest in a cockeyed manner, either against a mini or terrain or the edge of the board (there's 6 inches of blank space on our tables for sodas and dead soldiers). Any result other than dead flat on one face and pips face up is called 'shenanigans' and is rerolled.

However...

Sometimes it happens that a die will come to land directly on its corner, suspended balanced over the table in a very strange manner. Not touching anything except the board, the die will balance perfectly one CORNER of the cube and not fall on any face showing pips up. It's quite strange and the first time we saw it we were all weirded out.

Now it happens with regularity, and whenever this form of 'shenanigans' happens we all quaff beer.

Finally, I never say missile launcher in a game, even if that's what I'm using, because missile has miss in the word. So I'll say whether I'm using krak or frag and just refer to them as launchers or call them rocket launchers.

This even seems strange to me but somehow it feels like they actually do work better when you don't refer to them as you-know-whats.

I usually try to curse my opponent's luck more than boost my own. Like my bro for instance: one game he almost forgot to roll to wound on a 2+, so I reminded him "you'd better roll to wound in case you get a 1"... needless to say he didn't like the result. :p

Besides that, I try to use dice that are appropriately coloured for my army, if I have any. Black dice for Black Templars as an example.

I got a pair of the Insane Courage dice last summer, and only found out about 2 weeks ago that if you put them down with the insane courage sides facing up, than that's what they will sho when they roll. I play chaos, so I don't have to take a lot of leadership tests. In my last 2 games, I have taken a grand total of 3 leadership tests, using this method. All three times, I have rolled Insane Courage.

My own superstitions when gaming is to always have some cola with me to fill me with the zest of life before my turn. I also try and turn the dice gods against themselves and say 'anything but 6's' for armour saves and 'anything but 1s' when rolling leadership tests.

It hasn't worked yet, the dice gods are onto the rouse.

In our group we have an old red wooden dice that we call the blood dice. I don't know exactly why it's named like that, but it rolls 5s and 6s like 90% of the time.

Whenever we play gaining possession of the blood dice is actually part of the strategy.

Firm believer in "dice are dice" and no matter what way I roll them, who I pray to or what I say under my breath, they will land on a randomly generator number between 1 and x (where x is the number of sides).

So really, the answer to your question is none.

I have a friend who plays Ultramarines however and whenever he needs to make an important roll, he gets the dice he needs and simply holds his hand to his forehead, wispers "Courage and Honour" and rolls the dice. Haven't seem him fail yet.

I don't have any superstious rituals, but my dice absoulty hate my friend. I can hit and wound with the majority of my dice, but as soon as he rolls his saves he fails them all. Hmmm, I suspect that you didn't read an article here on Warseer about how dice work...(can't remember who wrote it). Anyways, what it was about, is that this guy rolled some dice about 10,000 times, and he was rolling GW's red and black dice. GW's dice are standard size dice with rounded edges and pips (holes to indicate numbers). Then the guy got some Casino dice, which are square and pipless (without holes), and rolled them 10,000 times. The conclusion was that standard dice roll 1s about 32% time, while Casino dice roll 1s only about 16% of the time. That means that there is a difference, and it's not only Miss Fortune that chooses the numbers that will be rolled. That's also what a lot of cheaters do - use Casino dice when they need high numbers (To Hit, To Wound, saves) and GW dice when they need low numbers (Ld tests). Though still, most of the people I game with use normal dice, and so do I - it's more fair. And the game is most fair when both the players use the same type of dice, eg. I do see Casino dice in my LGS, but only used by both players. Anyways, hope that ruins some lifes :skull::skull::skull: Mwahahahaha!
