ok, Ive been thinking a lot about how the Imperiums Military forces are structured but Im unsure on a few points:

The departmento munitorum is noted as having a High command organisation, where do these generals etc come from? are they promoted from the IG or recruited from the nobility?

Does the depatmento munitorum also conrol the Navy? I know the IG arent allowed control over ships but there must be someone to co ordinate ships and troops, to make sure that the imperial guard regiments end up where they are needed and relativly on time.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Actually, the Munitorum is an arm of the Adeptus Administratum. It is not really part of the Imperium's Military. The Munitorum official's "habit" to wear militaristic uniforms and to bear military ranks is more of a "showoff" thing than anything else... It is easier for a Munitorum guy to say "no" to a Guard general if he himself bears the title of General than if he was called "High Intendant" or something like that ;)

While the Navy and Guard are completely independant, it's the Munitorum which is tasked with supplying them with everything they need to function and with organizing their cooperation. Of course, both tasks are done in the Administratum's usual inefficient way, and it can lead to interesting situations like the supplying of unusable lazgun power packs (like in one of the Gaunt's Ghosts book) or the accidental deployement of a regiment on the wrong planet (in Fifteen Hours) because some Munitorum paper pusher made a simple typo...

As far as the Munitorum's high command recruitment is concerned, IIRC, their source is the Schola Progenium, but don't quote me on that...

The Imperial Guard codex has a two-page treatise on how the Departemento works. It might be a good place to look.
