Hi all

As the title says, I've been a gamer for a long, long while, but I never had the pleasure of playing with a fully painted army. This has gone on for long enough, so I decided to start a log here in order to show my progress and motivate me. From now on, you guys will be able to see my stuff on a (hopefully) regular basis. Before I forget, my GF helps me paint a bit too, so I'll give her credit whenever it's due.

Now on to the presentation of my projects, because there are 4 of them:

My first and current project is a tyranid army. I bought a small painted army off eBay and I'm going to replicate the scheme on the rest of my force. I know it's a bit like cheating, but at least I'll have a proper painted force in the near future. The paint job isn't all that hard to do, but it looks good enough for gaming pieces.

Second and/or third project, I still don't know in wich order I'll do them is either my DH (wich are pretty much just GKs) or a Space Marine chapter of my creation. The GKs have been almost all striped and they are few, like 35 PAGKs and 12 GKT. The marines are all going to be converted and a lot of them still need to be assembled. I'm looking at 3000pts of a 100% plastic force (everything that's usually metal is going to be converted from plastic). They will all feature helmets similar to the ones used by Khrangar in his own log. The good thing is that I already own pretty much all the bits I'll need.

The last project and not the least... stripping 342 steel legion miniatures and repainting them. If that wasn't a collossal enough task, they have 81 storm trooper friends that also need a coat of paint. Oh and before I forget, I have to fix a couple russes, sentinels, basilisks and chimeras and paint them too. Finally, I'll also have to build the baneblade my GF gave me for Xmass.

The task is gargantuan, but I really want to get things going. I know you've been looking to see photos, so here are a couple to wet your appetite...

First what the steel legion looks like in a bunch of ziplocks in a box of shoes, I'll try to take a picture of them all deployed soon to show you the magnitude of the army:
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Steel%20Legion/steellegionbox.jpg

And here is what I'm currently working on, I posted him a week ago I think:

Since the last time I posted my tyrant he has evolved a bit as you can see in these WIP pictures:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Tyranids/004.jpg

I guess it would be time to show what I'm aiming for with this, so here is a picture of some of those nice minis I got from eBay (maybe they were painted by someone here?):

I just read about your ebay success. I love that commissar!

But wow, 300+ IG. Good luck painting them! I'm currently one and a half years into my Vostroyan army with 160+ models completed. It's a fight I tell ya! But, the Emperor rewards those who fight in his name.

And 81 stormtroopers?! I thought my 60 were enough!

Can't wait to see the amassed steel legion force.

I loled and thought of quoting that for my sig but the onr there currently is just the win.

Thats alot of steel legion guys.
Ally with Blood angels and Templars and find a friend with lots of orks and you have a rather large war.

Those nids look nice, I like :)

One thing though, it seems the highlights on the wings of the Flyrant are reversed.
What I mean is: the recesses seem to be lighter than the wings itself.
Are you planning something intricate?

Hi

Thanks for the comments. As for the wings, it's hard to see in the pictures but the highlight is just under the recesses. I went for a high contrast because the wings look really bland otherwise.

I reckon that the paint job isn't really high quality, but like I said I'm working at replicating a scheme I didn't invent and I'm trying to get the army completed as fast as I can.

It's also been a while since I've painted, so this army serves a bit as practice. Once it's all done I'll have a painted army to play with, so I won't be rushing to complete my other projects.

Wait a second... isn't that Steel Legion a little short on Chimera's?

;)

Hicks

@ Codsticker: I know, I know, but thats a pic of just my Steel Legion miniatures, I also have storm troopers and vehicles. I do have a total of 6 Chimeras and I did try the mechanized doctrine... and I hated it to no end. The only mildly good results I've had with fielding Chimeras is when I play a mech-grenadier army and even then it's not exactly competitive.

In all honnesty, I think I'll end up converting some of the Chimeras into the much better Hellhounds.

Also, while most regiments from Armageddon are mechanized, they aren't all like that, so my army is the exception :p.

Not much but here is my progress on the tyrant. All I need to do now is to stripe and clean up the shell, do the base and paint the huge scything talons. My GF also basecoated a couple more gaunts, but I'll wait till a couple more painting stage before taking a pic.

As a (the?) fellow owner of very, very many Steel Legion minis, I'll of course be keeping an eye on this one. Already been interesting to see what they look like arranged together, as I've never quite dared to do that myself.

Nice coordination on the avatar, by the way. Are you going to do them in those colours?

Hi

I still haven't decided on a paint scheme for the Steel Legion. But with all the stuff I plan to paint before I actually get to do them, I think I'll have plenty of time to think about it.

I have done a couple test models with grey coats in the past. It looked ok, but it was a bit too bland for my taste. I think I'll avoid that scheme even more so, now that painting your Steel Legion miniatures grey apparantly makes them Death Korps wannabes (as if one couldn't want to collect them for what they actually are).

I quite like GWs scheme for them though, so I might very well go with that unless I get a better idea.

P.S. You should post a pic of your whole army too, I'd like to see that a lot.

Hicks

Another update...

The tyrant is 99% finished, I only need to do a couple subtle touch ups, but with my camera skills, you guys wouldn't see a difference anyway.

I think he came out allright for a gaming mini. The shell is a bit darker than expected, but I like it like that. I think I'm even going to darken the shells of the nids I got from eBay.

So here he is:

Anyway, interesting grey tone. Usually you see it a bit darker. It looks good as it stands though. You've got some good highlights on the wings too.

After a long while, here are a couple pictures. Progress was slow because of life and uni getting in the wat, but I should be able to do more this week.

I've been playing around with carnifexes this time. I did some paint touch ups on the 2 that were already painted and strated assembling a third. You will notice that none has the enhanced senses biomorph, but it's because there is no way I'm using those ugly mugs for my nids. I'll try to find a WYSIWYG alternative or I'll just warn my opponents before the game starts.

Hicks
29-03-2008, 22:22
Finally, the 3rd fex. I started magnetizing arms on this one. It's still drying at the very moment I'm typing this. I'll need to smooth everything with greenstuff and paint, but it seems to work pretty good. Come 5th edition, I'll be able to equip my TMCs with scything talons if the rumours come true :D.
Of course, as soon as I get more magnets, the other ones are getting magnetized too.

Okay

First: You are crazy!
As if painting 300+ guardsmen wasn't enough you have decided on painting a nid army. Another army with potentially many, many, many units on the field.

Second: I thought I would be good with my circa 100 Steel Legionaries but.... well there is always a bigger fish. ;)
I would stick to earth tones for your Steel Legion. With those they look best imho.
Back in the days of the Armageddon campaign I painted my Legionaries green... well not that a good choice.
For my new Steel Legion I am planning reddish-brown jackets.

Third: Your Nids look good. The close-ups show how well done the armour is... but I can't help myself feeling that they look very cartoon-like. This is not a bad thing imho.

Yes I chose nids, but my army is going to be pretty heavy on big bugs. Not that I want to abuse the nidzilla cheeze, but as you said, I already have a gazillion models to assemble and paint.

Second: I thought I would be good with my circa 100 Steel Legionaries but.... well there is always a bigger fish. ;)
100 isn't too bad either ;). I know the army is pretty big, but it's the one I game with the most, so they need the most models. Oh and I really don't know what you mean by "bigger fish" :p.

Yeah, like I said, I'm leaning towards the official scheme for the army. I tried and seen many other schemes and it's the one I like the best.

Third: Your Nids look good. The close-ups show how well done the armour is... but I can't help myself feeling that they look very cartoon-like. This is not a bad thing imho.

Again, I want to say that the scheme isn't my creation and the only one I painted from the bunch is the Tyrant. I'm still struggling with my mixture of ink/polish that I use for the carapaces. Right now it's too dark, but I think it's fiting for my "general" to be darker than the rest, IMHO, he looks meaner that way.

kool flyrant, and nids in general, but id consider doing something with the bases as they are pritty bland and let the model down, mayb realy watered down ink wash of brown or chestnut ink and then some flock, that should look good

Something else entirely, but I found some Spyrers I did with my GF a long time ago.

I did the Orrus and she did the Jakara, in fact that was her first miniature ever. The colors schemes are pretty bad, but that's because alomst all my old paint had dryed up.

Here is some of the work I did on my latest purchase, a Pit Slave gang! Unfortunatly, there was a mistake with my order and I got a Cawdor ganger instead of a techno. GW as nice as they are sent me a whole box as a replacement... wich also had the very same Cawdor instead of a techno :(. Well now I have a huge gang, but I still have to find a tecno. I have already done some work on them as you can see here:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Necromunda/003-1.jpg

Now I know what you're telling yourself, "Wow, you glued them, big deal ". But take a closer look at the photo below:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Necromunda/004.jpg

Yes, magnets! I magnetized all the gangers and the weapons. And I've been through hell doing it. I started with flat 1/16" magnets for the weapons and tubular ones for the bodies. After an initial testing I found out that while the weapon wouldn't fall off, they were going to be pointing downwards (metal is heavy). 1/8" magnets were what I needed for enough strength, but if you ever held a pit slave in your hand you'll know why it was hard to do. The surfaces I had to drill were only like a millimeter wider than the magnets themselves. I shudder at the tought that I have to do this again, but all in all the result is well worth it.

Hicks
21-05-2008, 18:47
I have also continued working on my growing swarm of nids.

Again, I had much fun with magnets. I almost completed the sculpting part on this fexes weapons. The position is a bit ackward, but given the size of the guns and the fact they can be taken off, it's a good compromize IMO:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Tyranids/005-2.jpg

He look better in real life, I still haven't managed to find the perfect colors to replicate the eBay scheme, but I like him anyway up to this stage. The good thing about this one is that since I built it, the magnets are better hidden than on the other 2.

Nice looking Carnifix! But I am disappointed to see yet another great guard army (Steel Legion My FAVORITE MODELS) just sitting there unpainted! It is really discouraging me from getting that guard army of my dreams due to the fact that it seems so hard to paint them. Oh well nids look nice. Good luck with the SL.

Hicks - I hate you I hate you I hate you I hate you...

You've managed to acquire - and could afford - so many of those gorgeous Steel Legion minis when nowadays they're pretty hard to come by. This makes me insanely jealous. I have one squad that I bought back during Armageddon 3 and never did anything with besides daub them in a variety of colour schemes. In retrospect I should have used some cheaper models for testing. One of the best things GW could possibly do for me is to re-release/resculpt the Steel Legion and Bedford pattern stormtroopers.

So yes; get going on the Guard, man!

Hi

Great to see I have a fan here on Warseer who loves me that much. Yeah, I like those http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Steel%20Legion/006.jpg storm troopers too, all 81 of them ;).

Jokes and "bragging" aside, I'm really focusing on the nids right now because I work a lot during summer and I really want a painted army before the end of it. Unfortunatly, I'm going to start the legion as my last project. I'm not that great a painter right now and I really want to become better before I tackle these bad boys (I also want to acquire a couple bitz to convert some into vets).

Also, I finished (well almost) a totally new carnifex as well the guns for another. You can see them in the following post, they are both magnetized at the head and arms. The positioning might look a bit ackward because of this, but it's a compromise I had do make in order to had diversity. Now I really have to catch up on those little gaunts wich I so hate to do.

Well the GKs are currently in pots filled with super clean and I guess nobody really want to see that :p. I do have pics of a WIP dreadnought I'm currently converting. He's got 2 siblings that are currently being assembled. I still need to find some bitz to complete them, but that'll give you an idea:

Hi all

I finished the banner for my dread. The photo is poo, but it's already dark here so it'll have to do until I can take a better one. The very shiny thing in the center is an inquisition =I= in bas-relief made of paper and covered in the ink and floor varnish I use on my nids.

I wasn't too sure if that particular banner would look good on a dread since it's so long, but I'm pleased with how it came out. I might still change it though, so I'd like to hear what you guys think of it.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/001-2.jpg

Other than that, I've begun working on the 2 other GK dreadnoughts and all the bitz I needed to continue on the nids are in the mail. Hopefully, I will have assembled 2 more dreads and a tyrant before the end of the next weekend.

Hi

I didn't take photos of the bitz that need to be converted but you can see some other angles here (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149356). Most of the dread isn't glued yet so if you need more specific shots just LMK. I'm building 2 others like him so I can probably make a simple tutorial if there is any interrest. I reckon a Furioso version would be great, I even have one laying around unused, but for the moment I'll concentrate on GKs and Nids.

Oh and the banner has been reduced in size since that shot.

SanguinaryDan

That would be great. The detail on the shoulders make it very hard to see the join between the new bitz and the body.

And if you do have the time and inclination a mini-tutorial would be much appreciated.

Mini-tutorial time!

First, you'll need to cut a rectangle in plastic card roughly the size of the hole in the dreadnought front plate like so:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/001-4.jpg

Then you glue it inside and wait for it to dry. Then apply greenstuff to the contour and pour some water on a flat surface. Lay the dreadnought front plate flat on the water and apply a sanding motion. The GS should smooth out the cracks and the eccess should go away. You should end up with something like this:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/002-1.jpg (not that I didn't wait long enough for the glue to dry on this pictures so the plastic rectangle got pushed inside, the end result is still a flat surface).

Now it's time to prepare the terminator torso. Take a torso like this one: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/003-2.jpg

Now cut away the flash and flashlights like so: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/004.jpg

Hicks
05-08-2008, 01:13
Now what you want to do is to sand the part indicated by the red line:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/008-2.jpg

Just lay the torso flat of fine sand paper and sand away. Do it in several shots so you can compensate in case the sanding isn't totally straight.

You should end up with something like this:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/007.jpg
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Grey%20Knights/006.jpg

Now just take a space marine backpack and cut the bottom so it fits under the terminator torso, you can add GS to fill the gap, but it's invisible unless you pick-up the model to look under it. Glue it on and add the termie torso. Fill the gap in the neck with GS and find a suitable head. Sand the back of the head until it fits in the torso and cut a bit of the neck and voilą, dreadnought ready.

Amazing Dreads. I've been thinking on an effective way to add the helmet style to a dreadnaught - now I know. Thanks for the tutorial.

I like the tyranids as well. What color is their carapace? It looks gray in some pics and silver in others. I really like the old hive tyrants - the new one is goo,d but the old one is great.

And good luck with the steel legion - I'm guessing at your quality it's gonna take a while.

Nice guitar btw, if it's the one I think it is.

Yeah I actually like the convertion better than the anime style huge heads on FW dreads.

The nids carapaces are codex grey with a mixture of black ink and liquid floor polish painted over. The result is pretty much like dipping except that it doesn't cover the whole model. I find it gives a nice wet and shiny look.

Yeah the steel legion is going to take a huge while, but I'm confident that with the new ink it won't take as much time as I first tought. However, it'll take even more time than expected before I get around to paint this army (see last picture in this post).

And it's a Warlock.

Also, I have some new updates for the thread...

Here's the almost finished magnetized shooty tyrant:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Tyranids/IMG_0233.jpg

And last but not least, the first piece of my new army. Some heavy reinforcements are on the way and I'll "steal" some stuff from my other marines to bulk the WS a bit:

Finished all the red and black on the remaining gaunts, I now just need a quick coat of codex grey on the chitin plates and my magic mixture and they'll be ready for basing. I swear they'll be complete by Monday because I'm horribly sick of painting them, plus I have a fex to finish.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Tyranids/IMG_0235.jpg

Plus a very welcome birthday present from my brother, reinforcement for my White Scars, now I really look forward getting my order from Neil as fast as possible.

BTW, I got a lot of stuff done for the nids, stay tuned for a big update tomorrow and some army shots. I'm taking the bugs out for a game in the morning and I'll take some pictures after.

Right now I have 14 genestealers, 9 magnetic warriors, death leaper and all the bases to finish to finally complete all of what I have as far as nids go (yeah I'm leaving out rippers and spore mines). I'm a fan of your stuff, metal guard armies rank number one in my heart, but Dark Angels! Those half traitors who care for no one but themselves. The same marines that will refuse their aid to a world in flames only to pursue a couple individuals, the same marines that will shoot their unsuspecting allies to keep their terrible secret safe! That said, while your bikes are very nice, the White Scars were really shining in all the events I mentionned above.

Now back to my nids, I'm happy to announce that they were the victors yesterday and I felt pretty cheap too. The guy was prepared to fight off a gazzilion gaunts and his hopes were crushed by 6 big bugs in a 1500pts game. But... everything I fielded was painted, here's proof:

@Draconian77: The dreadnoughts probably aren't going to be painted for a while. I'm doing a couple more nids and I'm trying to mold custom White Scars shoulder pads right now. Then I'm going to do a White Scars army and when that's done, I'll go back to the GKs.

Hicks I liked the way you converted the devourers arms- what arm did you use as a base?

Hi

The convertion is super easy. The arms themselves are from the old tyranid monstruous creature sprue. You know the one that comes with tyranid warriors and the the old tyrant and carnifexe. I used the big scything talon arms and cut away the talons. Then I took 4 devourers from the gaunt sprue and cut of the tip of the gun. I needed to trim the parts a bit more to be able to fit the devourer tips on the arms at a good angle, but it wasn't especially hard to do. Then I pinned the parts and since there was still a little gap I filled it with greenstuff.

It's pretty clear how to do it if you take the parts in your hand and compare them with the unpainted picture above. Hope that helps.

At last an update, it feels like I haven't posted here forever, but I did start something again. First thing first, I scraped the White Scars project. This wasn't an esay decision to make, but I figured out that in the end a pure bike army just would play too well. Also, I didn't want to have to paint the same units for two different SM armies, so one had to go.

However, there is something new here. I decided to start a Death Guard army, but not just any Death Guard army. I decided to use only the older style metal Plague Marines. I always really liked Nurgle and those old Plague Marines that are bloated and have a cute little spike on their helmets. Also, I really hate the new skinny melted look of the new ones.

So, I bought and traded for a bunch of chaos stuff and I now have enough to start the army. While most of it is getting stripped of paint as I write this, I did manage to start on something.

So here are the first WIP pictures of Lord Bubonicus, my Nurgle Daemon Prince. It's the generic DP, but I'm converting it a bit to make I'm a proper Nurgle follower.

However, I did have some more time to work on my DP. I need to fix up the pipes that go into it's head and fill some cracks with GS, but it's almost completely built/converted now.

Lovely GS work on the DP! Too late to perhaps change the sword to a scythe? Or too cliched you think? Also I think cloven hooves (while being a pain to put in) would look absolutely genius!

It wouldn't be too late at all to give him a scythe and honestly I thought about doing one, but I didn't because I think a scythe only looks good two handed. I think it looks a bit silly when a miniatures wields a huge scythe with only one hand. I guess I could make one up though and see if I like it, I'm pretty sure a DP could wield one onehanded after all.

Good idea about the hooves too, but it's a bit too late for that now.

I'd suggest keeping the sword. It fits in with the plaguebearers knives, and you can paint ooze are slime coming from the cracked runes on the blade. I think it would look pretty rad :)

Steal my baby from me? You'll have a taste of my pitchfork before you can commit such a crime! :p

I haven't touched the DP in a while, but here are some PIP photos. He looks way pink right now, that I still need to higlight him a lot more. He won't look like a pink flamingo, hopefully, when I'm done with him. The armor needs more highlights too and of course there is plenty more details to add, ut as I just finished school today, I'll finally have time to paint at least an hour a day:

I really like the conversion you done. Is the head the original one?

Yeah but I plead guilty to not updating it, or even painting anything in a huge while, I have been striping plague marines like mad lately though.

As for the Daemon Prince head, it the original one, but heavily converted. I did it like so:

1- Cut off the horns.
2- Sculpt the mask over his mouth.
3- Cut two small pieces from a plastic rod and drill 3 holes in them to make filters.
4- Put two small blobs of greenstuff where you want your filters to be and glue them there. I also added a small GS disk in the center of the filters.
5- Cut off the tip of a lance (I used an old skeleton lance) to make the horn. Put some greenstuff on the DP's forehead and glue the lance tip there.
6- One it's dry, clean up the area with your modeling knife and sculpt a rim at the base of the horn.
7- Drill a hole where the original horns used to be and somewhere else where you want the tubing to enter the body of the DP (in my case I went for the base of the wings). Glue a thick metal wire in the holes to create the tubes.
8- Use really fine metal wires and twist them around the tubes and presto, DP head done.

The dreads are in a glass shelve and still waiting for their turn to get a coat of paint :(. Right now I'm starting to work on my Death Guard again, but I think that after that project is done the GKs are going to finally have their turn. The good though thing is that both these armies use few models, so if I get hit by an urge to paint, I should be starting on the GKs before summer.

@ Pekel, thank you, you'll see they are very easy to make too.

Now for the meat of this post: an UPDATE.

I have finished removing the mold lines from my first Plague Marine squad. I just need to give them bases and I'll be able to start the painting on them. I'm happy to say that these old PMs look even better than I remembered from when I was a kid. Truly they are much nicer than the new ones.

It's also the first time I did some hobby work in my new hobby room and now that I have a dedicated place to play with my toys, I should be able to get a lot more done now. So here is my 1st squad:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Death%20Guard/IMG_0441.jpg

Also, since I can't have a pet and thus no pet photos in my plog, I'll post the next best thing... the thing that occupies the other corner of my hobby room. With all the talk last week in the Computer & Consoles forum, I couldn't resist playing a bit of:

Not much of an update, but here it is anyway. I finished preparing my 1st squad for painting. I very securely pinned the pole into the standard bearer hand, if you have that model you know how easy it is to break that part. I plan on snaping then pinning all of my standard before painting, or else I know they will eventually snap. Also, sand was applied to all bases with 2 coats of dilluted glue, figures were primed and a chaos black undercoat was apply to all models. Once painted and varnished they should be able to witstand play without chipping, or at least I hope so.

Here's the squad:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Death%20Guard/IMG_0444.jpg

And here's another photo with Bubonicus watching his warriors:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb196/HugoS_album/Death%20Guard/IMG_0445.jpg

Painting should start tomorrow using almost the same technique that Latro_ used on his plague marines, but with slightly different colors. Hopefully I'll get a result that's as fast to do and as great looking as his.

The squad as been basecoated in catachan green and drybrushed with camo green. Those are pretty much the colors I used on the Daemon Prince and I really hope it'll look good once use some washes on the plague marines. Meanwhile, I need to paint all the details now, but since the boring part is done with, things should go quicker and I won't want to hang myself so much when I pick up the brush.

So I nearly finished my test plague marine, I just need to give him a back pack and paint the base. He came out looking good, but he's a lot darker than my daemon prince. I will most likely go back and highlight the whole armor again to have him match the DP better.

The good thing is that it's because I used the washes all over him, for the rest of the squad I'll just wash over the details and not the green of the armor.

Here he is pre-wash:

Great work here, Hicks, as per usual!

Your Death Guard is really starting to come together, good call on the Camo Green drybrush. I'm at a similar point (most of mine are base coated Catachan Green or about to be) and was just going to do the standard Rotting Flesh drybrush, now I'm not so sure....

What are those 'eggs'? They're REALLY appropriate!

Thanks for the kind comments. I prefer my Plague Marines to be a bit cleaner than most, I find it makes the old miniatures look better. A good green like Camo Green is perfect for this. It doesn't show in my photos, but it looks really good and has much more contrast in real life.

The eggs are actually Plasma Hatchers (http://www.carouseltoyshop.co.uk/images/ebay/mega_bloks/5143_1.jpg), a kiddy toy. They were discounted at $2,50 each when I bought them, so I really couldn't pass the opportunity. A lot of nid players use them.
