(if this is the wrong forum please move, sorry)

What I would like to have, is to be able to break off from combat when a unit is stuck in assault with another it just couldn't possibly hurt (at a penalty, of course...) .

example: gretchins assaulted by a dreadnought.

what do you think?

everything except fearless models can do that now when they fail the leadership roll. Of coarse they might all be run down. I'm not sure that any of the walkers are really that much slower that you could justify just getting away.

I do not think that you can decide to fail your leadership roll automatically since this is a special ability given with some characters(auto pass or fail). And it would make Terminators horrible for close combat since they cannot sweeping advance and could be unlocked with at will.

Breaking off from combat is a Universal Special Rule: Hit and Run. The fact that few units have it makes the units that do and the really tough units (dreadnoughts, wraithlords, Fexen) very formidable opponents in close combat.
