no 500 would be too large, i dont think there is a set number but imo they would be around 150 Mark, no where near the size of half a conventional chapter ( it would make the SW 6000 strong! )

I see a Great Company being somewhere between 150 and 200 warriors as they should have a solid core of Grey Hunters (80-100?) supported by a small cadre of Long Fang (15) and Wolf Guard (20) but as they have no Scout company I would see them having a large number of Blood Claws training on foot and bikes (20-50?) then add in Dreadnoughts and your characters as well, but i don't see them getting to much larger.

Perhaps the best idea is to say that each Great Company has its own Battle Barge which may not have the same capacity as normal ones as they may have more training areas, bigger drinking halls etc.?

And training areas for the drinking halls! Woo Hoo!

It's not like the Black Templars don't do that already, and the Space Wolves were around being 'non codex' before they ever were.

Each Great Company has its own fleet of ships (as stated in all the background about the Space Wolves). Compare that to the Ultramarines' 3 battle barges...

Aye thats true, BT do diverge (thiee numbers are reputedly around 5000-6000 ), and the SW were around first ( but only by a few hundred years) but i doubt each is the half the size of a chapter thats all.

OP - the size is always disputed by us on heer, hellbore is correct tho when he says each Great Company has its own fleet and that they could in theory be as large as you say, i just dont feel that for a few reasons.

The SW novel (one of them) said that Berek had a Cruiser. I might have the term wrong... but its the space ship that holds 1 company of SM's. Now, I know that the SW's don't conform to the index astartas but I think that they could be that much larger than 100 men... unless they make the blood claws share a living quarters or they sleep in the chapel/drinking hall. However, I think that maybe a great company will vary in size from time to time based on the availability of recruits, battle loses, and wolves on independent missions (Read 'Lone Wolves').

I think I made this arguement in past posts that because wolves do leave marines behind to fight on even after the battle is over (win or lose) would make it extremely difficult to determine the size of a great company.

I think since some great companies have Battle barges it could be argued that a full strength great company might be between 100-600 men.

600 being that the company has a battle barge and the low ranking wolves sleep where there is space. More explanation: Battle barge 300 SM's (normally). Thus there has to be room in the chapel for 300 to be seated. When the chapel isn't being used then 300 could sleep in the chapel. I'm sure if pressed... when the chapel/hall is being used for ceremonies or drinking... its pretty crowded. So 600 would be really pushing it.

Now you could argue that its possible that you could tact on another 100-200 depending if you are counting wolves who are left behind to fight guerrilla wars (Again Read lone wolves). However, that shouldn't be considered IMHO as they are not actively attached to any company until reunited.... or it would be highly dishonorable to not count those Guerrilla Wolves as part of the company until proven dead.

My final answer. Great Company Between 100-450/600. 450 if they have a battle barge; 600 if they live squished.

a Strike crusier holds 100 Marines, plus launch bays and hangers for enough support and equipment for the company, so its feasable they all could sqish in together, but i doubt it.

also the SW do at times stay on campaign, my understanding was that the entire Great Company would stay behind, now wether this was with fleet support or not im not sure, but its possible the SW chapter is massive, i just dont think there as big as 500+ per Great Company thats all.

Well when you think about it, a single cruiser with a handful of escorts could be construed as a fleet and certainly would be a formidible force given that said ships would be crewed by space marines. I've always thought of great companies as being somewhere between 100-200 marines strong, generally around the 150 mark. Of course, occassionally companies get lost and are eventually replaced, and there are surplus bloodclaws in the fang who are yet to complete their training and be assigned to a great company, as well as grimnar's own household, so the total number of marines is probably close to 2000.

My understanding of the number of marines carried by a strike cruiser/battlebarge is that the figure is for the number that can be carried and deployed simultaneously; I suppose they could squash more in and deploy them in separate waves if so desired. It would be a bit too much like carrying all of your eggs in one basket though.
