Hi everyone, Long time lurker, first time poster.
After lurking around these forums for quite a while, I thought it was about time I started to post here. I have been browsing and following quite a few of the progress logs here and they are all of a very high standard, both in painting, converting, sculpting, and the cool ideas.
I thought I should introduce myself first. My name is Jamie and I live in Tasmania, Australia. I am 16 and have been in the hobby for around 3 1/2 years now.
I first started when the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazines were released, and have been collecting ever since.
My major focus is on the Painting/Converting side of things, although I do play the odd game now and again.
I have never finished any armies, although I hope to one day.
I entered the OZ Golden Demon last year and made it through several cuts on the final day, and I hope to enter again this year. I collect Dark Angels for 40K, Dwarves for Fantasy and everything and anything for LOTR.

Now, onto my current projects.
I am currently working on a few projects, first of which is a Dark Angels commander that I’m painting up for display. He is still very WIP and only the basic bulking out has been done on the freehand.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/myyoshi333/WIPsArwenDA005.jpg

Another project Im working on is Arwen, she is in a very WIP stage, although I hope to finish her soon.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/myyoshi333/WIPsArwenDA007.jpg

And finally we come to my LOTR dwarves, I am currently working on getting an army of these guys done, so far I have completed 12 of them.

Im hoping to update this log at least once a week, and get some good constructive feedback on what Im working on from all of the very talented members here.

Nice stuff James, anymore Dark Angels to show us?

MrBear

I must say that the pictures shows that you have a lot of skills. I am particularly impressed by your dwarves but the other figures looks promising as well. The colour on the Dark Angel's armour might be a bit too light for my taste but you clearly stated that it was still wip and even if it would stay light coloured it's most likely going to look stunning anyway :D

Hey guys, thanks for the replies

@D35t0y3r: yeah, the magazine finished a while back, i didnt follow it through to the end though, got distracted by the lure of warhammer.

@Coolhand: Ask and you shall receive :)

@MrBear: Yeah, the Dark Angel is a display figure so im practicing some things on him (mainly lighting and getting some nice contrast in my colours) so he is a little lighter than he probably should be.

Here's todays update,
Spent half of yesterday working on a colour scheme for my DA's, i had tried once before on a DA Scout (Seen here http://coolminiornot.com/156951) but i decided that it was too bright for the dark angels. Here are some pics of my latest test, i tried making him more dark and menacing, but still with some contrast. i painted him using wet-blending and a top-down lighting effect and think that this may be the colour scheme i use for the rest of the army. What do you guys think?

Once again nice work, high standard overall on the latest marine but most of all nice work on the light from his eyes. Small extra touches can really make a nice model even nicer. An army like this would be a sight to see

First of all, welcome to Warseer! You certainly have innate skills, considering that 3 years of painting is not THAT much (at least for me, I've been into the hobby for ten years now and I'm starting only now to understand what of the two ends of the brush is the correct one :p)

Now, on to the models:

- I really like the WIPs, especially the marine. The freehand on the shoulder pad is top quality, I like how it blends with the rest of the mini.

- LotR dwarves are ace! And lol for the red noses :D

- The test mini for your DA... I LOVE the scheme: it's nice to see some alternative tone for the dark angels, and the effort you put in it is evident. Are you planning to give them red bolters (hence the red belt?). If so, I would add a red trim on shoulderpads too, since with the boltgun glued on, the belt will not be too visible. It should help with the general "balance" of the mini, too.

Looking for updates,

Toschenko

Our small community at A52 is great, but I think there's more feedback to be had around here.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the positive feedback, ive finished the DA now (apart from the DA Symbol on the shoulderpad, ill do that once the squad is completed). Im currently working on his base and should have completed pics up tomorrow.
Only problem is that in mixing up the highlight colours ive almost run out of the base coat colour :p So after this guy ill be back to the dwarves untill i can get some more paint.

@Faolan: Yep, us Tasmanians are taking over mwuahahaha!!

thanks again,

Hey guys,
Not too much done since the last update, the marine is finished apart from the DA emblem and base, and I’ve started work assembling the rest of the squad. As this update is so disappointing, I thought I would include some pics of my workspace for you all.

Hey everyone,
Been quite busy lately so i havnt had much time to update, but i have been painting a bit.
I have got the first basecoat on 6 marines for the DA army, they still need another coat though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/myyoshi333/WIPswerwer001.jpg

I have finished the armour on 4 dwarves for my LOTR army.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/myyoshi333/WIPswerwer003.jpg

And i have also started on a Dwarf Lord. This is the first mini i have used Matte Medium with and it works fantastically. The paint no longer rubs off and im able to add lots of colour nuances etc that i wasnt able to before so im quite excited with the possibilities now.
I have also included a couple of supersised pics of the dwarf for better scrutiny. ( i have more if anyone wants to see them)

All feedback is welcome, especially on the dwarf. I am getting into some serious painting now in preperation for GD this year and would like as much criticism as possible so i can improve.

Tsen

SirJD
31-03-2008, 22:48
Hey Tsen,
Glad you like them :)
Here is how i paint their armour

Armour

Base Coat: Apply a heavy drybrush of Boltgun Metal to the armour.
Highlight 1: Apply a light drybrush of Mithril Silver over the armour.
Shade 1: Apply 1-2 Chaos Black washes over the armour.
Shade 2: Thin down some Chaos Black to almost a wash consistency and paint this into the gaps between each armour plate.
Highlight 1: Paint each rivet on the armour Boltgun Metal then Mithril Silver.
Dirt: Apply a few washes of Scorched Brown to select armour plates

Hope this helps,
SirJD

Jamie. Welcome to Warseer. You got a lot of talent for 16.

I am interested to know how many minis you have painted in three and a half years to reach this level of skill?

Also the skin on the Dwarf is that 'wet blended' up or built up in layers with thin washes of colour?

Remarkable smooth, subtle effect you are achieving. .... GIT! :D

Hi, just been looking back over your log, and thats some great painting you're doing, beautifully smooth blends. How exactly do you do your "wet blending". I've heard the term before and although I have assumptions on whats involved, I dont know for certain and would love to hear an explanation of the technique.

Thanks, and great stuff!

@Liamrob: Glad you like them, let me know which DA you mean and ill try and find my colour list :)

@Tsen: Glad i could help, looking forward to seeing the results.

@Harry: Thankyou for the welcome. Hmm...how many minis ive painted, thats a hard one lol.
Well i started painting commission work around 1 1/2 years ago, although that was gaming stuff. I also took around 10 months off from the hobby after about a year as i really lost interest and wasnt happy with what i was producing. Guess that doesnt really answer your question though lol

@Harry,Anodyr,Hollopoint: I use a technique called "Juicing", basically using very thin paint and layering, using the thinness of the paint to build up colour. Check out this article on the subject by Sebastian Archer over on OzPainters for more info http://www.mainlymedieval.com/ozpainters/viewtopic.php?t=49

Thanks to everyone for the replies and encouragement,

Hey Liamrob,
Yep JD=Jamie, though im not the demon winning Jamie.

The dark angel for my army is

Basecoat of Bronze Green
1st Highlight: 50:50 mix of Bronze Green and Deep Green
2nd Highlight: Previous mix + 1 part Yellow Green
3rd Highlight: Previous mix + 1 part White

These are only approximates, i sort of make it up as i go lol But that should give you a colour almost the same.

As a bit of an update, i got some more work finished on the dwarf, aswell as starting work on my Wyrd Comp mini hosted over at OzPainters, and did some more work on my marines. Should have some picture updates within the next few days.
Also just to let you know im accepting display commissions, used to accept whole armies but they became a bit too time consuming and grinding, but im quite happy to paint up some display stuff, it would be nice not to be broke again aswell lol
Just PM if your interested.

Thanks they are vallejo model colours right? I haven't tryed them yet but i'm ordering some soon. I hear you used matte medium on the dwarf. It has some amazing finishs to blending! or did you wet blend?

Will have to check out that comp. :D

haha, sadly no, although we do have regular painting meets so i can learn from him :D
Yep, they are vallejo model colour, they are a great brand, although i would reccomend using matte medium with them as they have a tendancy to rub off when using very thin paint. (i.e juicing).
Also i use the "Juicing" technique, you can find more info about it in the thread a linked to in my last post.

Should have some updates soon,

Yeah i have already started using the technique of Seb archers mettalics! If you haven' tried it yet you must :D

Aww i am in the lonely town of Perth, for starters i don't get to see Johnothan Van Butzler (Forgot how to spell it) and Irene Turner, only when they are entering the minis. Otherwise there is Nick who won bronze in the Golden Demon mini category.

I really like your dark angels, but I was intrigued by the dwarf - what's matte medium? Something you use in conjunction with the "Juicing" technique or have you (as I understood it) sealed the mini between stages?

Subscribing.

liamrob
18-04-2008, 15:32
Nah matte medium of what i have heard, It like waters down the paint but still keeps the pigment strong. You know if you use a paint pallete with wells. Put in a bit of metallic paint and add a heap of water. The metallic particle thingos will float to the bottom. Meaning you have to mix it everytime you use it. With Matte medium it will hold those bits together while watering it down.

It's basically a thing to water down paints with. It also tones down the shine on inks hence Matte medium :D Some people do 2 glazes of it over there finished model to seal it but i don't know if it's really effective.

Done :D

Looking good Jamie!, maybe you want to link them to Sebs article??

Hey guys,
Apologie's for the lack of updates recently, ive been quite busy and havnt had time to take some pics untill now.
To those with questions i will definately be replying to you, im just a little short on time at the moment, give me a day or two and ill get back to you.
I have finished the first 4 marines (Bar the freehand, and i also noticed the flamers "liquid holder" isnt painted) and i have started work on the next four(including a sargaent).
The sargaent is almost complete and the other three are receiving their final highlight on the armour, im hopeing to have these four finished by the end of the weekend.

Awesome Jamie!

I just think the face lacks depth or another final highlight?
The robes look really cool!, what has happened to the plasma pistol?

Another thing to notice is your base edges i think need a bit of cleaning where you take the bases apart from sprue sorta thing. But in other terms i'm going to try a similar technique on my ultramarines :D

SirJD
25-04-2008, 09:12
@Mr Chair: For the marines im using "Wet Blending', it gives nice results for the amount of time it takes, so i find it works well for tabletop.

@hallowed_are_the_ori: Ill see what i can do :)

@Satan: Liamrob explained it perfectly.

@Liamrob: Yeah, the pic wshes the mini out a bit so it does look as if it needs some more higlighting, however irl it looks alright. I take it you mean the fact its half painted? i paint the back of the weapon arms before i attatch them so i can get to the details better. Also, the bases are only being used to hold them with at the moment, when i get around to basing them ill make sure i clean them up.

Thanks to everyone for being patient for a reply, been quite busy lately. As a thanks ive included completed pics of the sargaent :D

My only real criticisms are pretty simple, and one's a colour choice JD.

Darken the eye areas a bit more perhaps.

I don't really like the brown robe much. Brown, black, and white are obviously all good and acceptable colours for warrior monks, knights, etc, I'm just so used to seeing DA with white/off-white that anything else looks "odd". Having said that, when do you want to drop by my place and teach me how to do flesh and cloth like that? :D

Colonel Haizelhoff
25-04-2008, 18:03
I love the work and IMO the brown is ok, although I dont mean it wouldnt be a bit odd. It's probably that the bone white contrasts better.

SirJD
26-04-2008, 01:50
@Faolan: I see what you mean, im used to seeing DA's in off white so it took some getting used to, but with this army i really wanted to portray the DA's as a grim dark army (as they should be considering their history), so i went with darker colours, as ive always thought GW's scheme was a bit too "happy", although i do understand where your coming from.

Looking really good :D If you have any free time on your hands would you be able to show us a step by step of the blending on the marines armour? If it's wet blending it may be harder but yeah :P

You have really got the glowing effects right :D I'm still trying to get it right on my marines eyes. I keep watering it down a bit to much and dropping it in the black lining between the eyes and the helmet.

Ok i thought you based the minis after painting :p
