The Tale of the Old West Painters. (Month 1)

Howdy pardners.

So this thread is for any work you have done in month one.

The idea off this thread is to motivate us (and anyone who wants to join us) to get stuff painted.

I have started this thread following the success of “The Tale of Fantasy Painters” and “The Tale of 40K Painters” to help anyone interested in “The Legends of The Old West” game from Warhammer historical (or indeed any other Wild West game) to get stuff painted.

So that’s it really … if you want to paint ‘Cowboys’ and want somewhere to post them Or you just want to watch us painting ‘Cowboys’ this is where to come.

Please feel free to join us.

Unlike the other 'Tales' rather than have a set start and finish date and require a set number of points or a unit (or Posse) every month … in this thread painters can post as much or as little as they like, even if that is only one mini a month. (as long as you try and post something!)

This way folks can get stuff painted fast if they want to (which will inspire and motivate the rest of us to get our stuff painted) OR they can concentrate on one mini at a time and on painting it as well as they can.

I will start a new thread each month so that folks can post everything they have got painted so far at the start of each month for everyone to enjoy. After that each thread will be for chat, questions, painting advice, encouragement, tutorials, WIP etc, etc,

The painters who have thrown down so far :

Bellarus :
Catferret : Bandidos
Count sinister :Lawmen and Outlaws
Festus : Cavalry : 54mm
Harry : Cowboys, 7th Cavalry and Plains Tribes. Maybe Bandidos
JonesRob : Cowboys
Knitemare : Cowboys and Outlaws
Lardidar : Cowboys
Littleleadmen :
Malarick : Lawmen
Paletine Katinka : Lawmen
Rabid Bunny 666 :
Rhamag : Lawmen, Cowboys and Outlaws.
Suavely Dun : Outlaws
Warsmith : Outlaws and Lawmen.
Widgrin : Outlaws and Lawmen.
Wreiro :

I would just like to thank the painters involved for their interest and enthusiasm in this project. I know it is going to help me get stuff painted and I hope it helps motivate you too. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope this project is a big success.

I also hope 'the viewers at home' enjoy the results of all the hard work of the painters.

Now lets mount up and ride!

There was a fair bit of discussion about the scale of the various ranges of miniatures available on the first thread.
I have reproduced the short version here as a reference for anyone who is interested.

Old/Original Foundry Old West Ranges (25mm) just about work with:

New Foundry OR Artizans 'Heroic' 28 mm (and then only if you are squinting into the midday sun).

Some of the biggest of the 28mm scale stuff will just about work with some of the smallest of Black Scorpions 'very heroic' 32mm.

Old Foundry will not mix with Black scorpion. Either of the other mixes will mean you need to leave the bases on the smaller and cut them off the bigger. And not look too closely at the size of the guns. (or heads!)

You can see from this your best mix is New Foundry and Artizan.

Very, very nice, Harry. I have always loved that Bandito model, and you really did it justice with your painting. The cavalry officer is great too - I like the way that he seems to be walking up an incline because of the way he's based. Very nice attention to the model's pose. And his horse is excellent - I love the US brand on the shoulder. Excellent attention to detail! I'll post up my work later today or tomorrow - but unfortunately it only amounts to one model. Disappointing. But I'll keep going, and in a month or so I'll have the time to really get some work done. Looking forward to seeing what we've all done last month!

Harry the painting adonis!

I can't fathom how you get so much done in a month .... and to a great standard.

I will have pics of my Mexican tomorrow afternoon once I have bought betteries for the camera.

I too stuck to the one model for the month .... I have my navy guy for my pirates too.

I hope to crack on and paint a few this month to get a useable force going so I can ply a game or two.

Hmm, my camera seems to be on deaths door .... it is taking no decent shots at all.

Anyway I had to use a fill flash to get any kind of light onto the mini.

Ok month one, here is Hernandez one of three brothers who all ride in the Mexican only posse.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/xapati/Legends%20of%20gamers/Picture009.jpg

Painting highs ... I like how is clothing has turned out, it is just a khaki colour (I use Coat de arms and Vallejo) with GW bleached bone added in for highlights. I like how it came out so much I will be using it on an upcoming Empire army I am planning.

Painting lows ... after a good year without even picking up a brush I have lost a lot of old technique, things like basic blending and skin tones seem to have abandoned me but I hope that in the next few months I will pick them all back up.

I have also noticed my hand shakes a little when holding a brush or pen ... this is new to me and am not sure what could be the cause (I'm 25 so don't think its getting old)

What will I do differently next time ... All members of the posse will be wearing the crimson hat but I will try to give them all individual clothing to make them stand out from each other, also I have been given a recipe for Hispanic skin that I will be having a go at next (this) month.

Until next month....

The bandito was the quickest and easiest of the lot to paint. I really enjoyed him I may concentrate on my mexican's to get a posse done.
I am glad you spotted that it was only very subtle but it seemed to work.
The brand I can take no credit for that is a sculpted detail and is on all the foundry cavalry horses.

I can't fathom how you get so much done in a month .... and to a great standard.
Thanks. Mostly it is just setting aside some regular painting time and a lot of harsh language. :D

Ok month one, here is Hernandez one of three brothers who all ride in the Mexican only posse.
Hernandez looks great. The clothing is a triumph. I don't think you have lost all you skills. :D It does take a while to get back in the groove but it comes back fast if you start painting regularly.
I love the idea of matching hats but it seems a tad bright next to the very muted clothing.

Thanks, I think the pic makes the hat look brighter than it is.

It is paintind in scorched brown with red gore added. So it is more of a muddy red.

I want to start painting regular again, think I may re-work my evenings to get some 'me' time.

I have LOTR, LOOW, LOHS, WFB and Epic forces to do .... and then GW go and release a version of 40k that fixes a lot of the things that made me give it up, so I will have a force for that to do too. Damn them!

EDIT - Those buildings are fantastic! .... if I had the room I would love to do some terrain but alas, I have a small space.

Great town Harry. I have been very lax on the scenery front but your street gives me some ideas to work towards.

The Mexican is good Lardidar. Great skin and clothing. I think the hat and boots draw too much attention to the extremities of the model though. Hopefully that's just the pic like you said.

I'll get some pics of some stuff taken asap. I have done some models, honest!

Ok so my update time.

I only went for one mini for March, ive been pretty busy with work and commisions so i didnt want to push it.

So here he is:

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh261/blurryjonesrob/Cowboy2.jpg

I wasnt as happy with him as the first mini i posted in the build up thread. I could have done his shirt better i think.

Highs: I got him finished! The hat and the trousers turned out cool.

Lows: The shirt and that im not loving the casting quality from Black Scorpion compared to other manufacturers such as Foundry or Artizan. Something just isnt right...

Anywho, heres where im at so far with the tale: 2 cowboys

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh261/blurryjonesrob/Month1-Cowboys.jpg

C&C always apreciated as usual. This month il be working on another cowboy and my 1st Apache.

cheers
Rob

Those are both beautiful results. I love the muted tones.

Tell me about the tufts of grass how are you doing those?

I know what you mean about Black scorpion minis. Some strange 'growths' of extra metal (Not 'flash') from the casting process. However they do clean up and once cleaned they are some very nice mini's.

Very nicely painted guys, huge fan of this log.
I'm interested in getting into Old West, the game, and i was wondering what colours you guys like to use when painting the minis for it?

JonesRob

Harry - you are making some great progress with your stuff (as with all your other projects :D) Excelent painting and modeling. The buildings are inspiring, ive got to put the finishing touches to the ones ive been working on.

The grass clumps i use are made by silfor and come on adhesive sheets. you just pull them off and glue them down. i do a littlwe trimming before hand tho.
The late Autumn pack is great for desert/arid landscapes.

you can get them here:

http://www.barrule.com/Workshop/scratch%20builders%20paradise/Silflor.html

I think you are right about the "random growths" on the Black Scorpion minis. Bit of a pain in the ass to clean up.

Lardidar - The Mexican looks awesome! I really like the deep red you have achieved. I think it suits the Mexican posses well. I may have to get a few Mexuicans as im getting jealous of everyone painting them :p

hallowed_are_the_ori - Come and join in, the more the merrier! :)
I try and go for muted colours with old west minis because of the dusty, dirty environment. So lots of browns, tans, greys etc. and when mixing i add bone and light grey rather than white to keep things toned down. The odd splash of bright colour is good to have tho. especially as gang markings etc

Cool, thanks for that dude! Yeah my friends who play D&D( i dont play it tho) saw the game around on forums and we decided to give it a go, bought the rulebook the other day, and we're considering black scorpion minis for the models. They've always wanted to paint models, but not do armies, and i've always wanted to paint more non-40k stuff, so hopefully we enjoy it and post some pics on here for you guys!

Lardidar - the Mexican looks really good. I like the matching boots and hat - lots of character!
Harry - yet another building! That town is looking excellent - I have to get started on my own this summer...
JonesRob - very nice beardy guy. As Harry says, really nice muted colours, and the natural colours look great.
Fantastic work everyone! I'll have a dullcoated final version of my first model and some pics of the as yet unfinished follow-up on the thread in a few days.

Looking forward to seeing yours. Finishing touches  I am much better at starting projects than finishing them. :D

Reading this I have this dreadful urge to combine 40K and Wild West and convert some minis to look like something from "Firefly". Maybe a Necromunda gang .... I could even convert the crew .... and ... and ...
Noooo... must resist and finish some of the projects I have started.

EDIT : Just off to watch to watch some episodes of Firefly.

Sorry I'm late everyone! Things at work have been doing my head in and I've been finding it hard to get motivated to paint. Seeing all the cool stuff y'all have painted and built makes me want get back into gear though!
I have finished Lucia, selected the models from Black Scorpion that I want to use and hopefully I'll be able to post on time next month!

PS: I've switched from Lawmen to Outlaws because the models I want to get painted don't really look like Lawmen.

Sooo... here's the finished Lucia...
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o58/ian_trudgett/Legends%20of/Lucia2.jpg

Next up will probably be the Desperado leading the posse (still need to pick a name for her) chosen because I like her pose and big hair.

I do love this stuff. Tales of Old West is on my 'to do' list. Do you think you guys could do me a big favour and list what range a given model is from under the picture? It would be nice to know where to look when I get round to this.

Harry's right, Hallowed, that dark duster makes him look like a real killer. I'm guessing he's an outlaw! Very sinister - nice job.
Didn't say it when I posted my first model this month (the Bad, from the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), but it's 'Bad' from Artizan's Good, Bad, and Ugly blister.
