View Full Version : Questions for Phil Kelly?

Lexington

So, I'll be heading to Adepticon this weekend, and on Friday, will be attending a small Q&A session with Phil Kelly, author of the Ork and Eldar Codex, and all-around Big Shot Game Developer. I've got a few questions of my own to ask, but my tiny mammal brain can only come up with so much. An hour and a half is a long time to bug a dude. So, I figured I'd open up a topic for questions people would like asked of Mr. Kelly, including things about 5th Edition and plans for what comes afterwards. I'll collect them up on Friday morning, and ask some of the most interesting ones at the Q&A session. Post away, lads and lasses!

(before anyone asks, yes, I'll ask about the sponson thing, assuming that someone else doesn't get to it first)

Eldar FAQ, 18 months and counting. Nuff said.

That and asking about other FAQ's would be nice too.

Hah - turning up with a wish list or a book of grudges would not be a lot of fun.
I had a chat with Gav Thorpe a long time ago - any rule details, rumours, 'future' developments etc. he told me back then are fossil and forgotten by now. What could be more interesting is to ask something like "how is it to be a games developer". How is it when a hobby becomes work; how it feels to play with an army you developed yourself; where you get inspiration etc.

Anyways - good luck!

If you could ask him this question for me please;

“How the hell do you, in association with GW, plan to stay in business against competition like War Machine and Flames of War when your rules updates, FAQ’s, and general game and model support is so woefully slow to non-existent in comparison?”

Or, this one;

“Is it utter laziness or complete incompetence that prevents you from releasing a postage-stamp size answer in a White Dwarf to the question about how to resolve conflicts between two opposing Eldar payers who’s Farseers each have Runes of Warding and Runes of Witnessing or how a Banshee mask works if the Banshees consolidate into a combat that has gone beyond the first round?”

Thanks

You might also ask about what goes into playtesting procedures and rules development. There's a number of people that might be interested to see some details on that sort of thing, especially given how many people seem to believe that GW doesn't do any at all.

There's the usual run of where things are going and future products being worked on.

Defensive weapons in 5th.

Another vote for an Eldar FAQ.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I got right now.

Please beg him to make sure he is on the team that writes the Imperial Guard codex. Or failing that, ask who they have lined up for the job.

Also find out whether they hire either orangutans or chimpanzees to proof read their material. I'm curious.

Could you take a copy of the Warseer Eldar FAQ to give to him please. And also the 2007 Warhammer world GT house rules PDF with all the Eldar entries highlighted.
Ok, thats going to be patronising, just ask for a big one! :chrome:

TBH I'm never impressed with official GW FAQ's as they are always so short.

I would try to fit an Exodite question in. Craftword lists plea. More BL novels request (even though he probably has nothing to do with that side). More new character requests - or a return of the old ones.

1) everyone is asking about their own codecies but how about just asking for a rough timeline for all codecies coming down the pipeline?

2) what bits packages can we expect to see made available in the near future?

3) will the retail price of the 5th ed. box be comparable to that of 4th ed., or significantly more?

have fun at the tournament! thanks for taking the time to ask for suggestions for the Q&A.

Mr Kelly:

1) Will we see a map-based campaign system for 40k, similar to Mighty Empires? If so, will there be 40k-specific tiles to represent cities, defense lasers, spaceports, etc.?

2) Will Cities of Death be compatible with 5th edition? If not, will there be a new version of Cities of Death?

3) What progress has been made on an Imperial Inquisition codex?

2. Can shoota nobs take a PK?

I don't understand why there are so many questions about the Shoota-Nob... It's completely straight forward.

A mob of boyz may exchange their sluggas and choppas for shootas. The nob is part of the mob, and therefore also exchanges his slugga/choppa for a shoota. The nob may exchange his choppa for a power klaw. However, the shoota nob doesn't have a choppa anymore, having already given it to the ork quartermaster in order to get his shoota, and thus cannot have a power klaw.

It's pretty plain, whether or not you agree with the concept or not.

I would like someone to ask Phil why Necrons aren't going to be the first codex redone after 5th considering how hard the new vehicle damage rules will bone them.

Ask him what's his favourite drink, how he's enjoying Adepticon, and what he does outside of work...

Questions are dependent upon what your readership want to know about as well as how much you feel you want to ask them.

Phil's a great guy, just hang out with him and you'll have a pleasant half-hour. If you're putting together something for print, then use some of that time to get a reader interest angle, but keep some time for yourself.

Have fun at the con.

FAQ's in general. Everybody needs them so the question might as well be a blanket one.

Tidbits on the 5e rules and what terrain the starter boxed set will contain.

I really like this question.

Seriously though beyond asking 1 question regarding FAQ's(maybe with a couple of examples), independant rules questions should maybe be kept to a minimum, the guy probably hates hearing those all the time.

Because an FAQ is like them holding their hands up and saying 'right this is the final word on the matter'

a. they cant work it out them selves
b. they cant get it spelt/ordered/etc.. right in the published book, how they gonna do it in a faq
c. they're lazy 'roll a d6 for it'
d. what we consider frequently asked questions on WS, GW dont. e.g. The nob power klaw thing may come up alot here but in they might not hear about that question much. Which is why we should all write letters to GW like I did to mr Kelly.

Right here may bit a bit more true than you think. No one, and i mean no one at the GW store in my area even thought to consider that shoota boy nobs cant have PKs, of course they can.

Things over the net are debated and rationalized/irrationalized out way more than they are in RL in my experiences.

For instance the whole assaulting out of a drop pod thing for DA, that was never a issue here, you cant do it and it was for some reason clear to most everyone that was how it was. Or that you cant fleet out of a Raider, fleet is a movement, regardless of what it replaces, so you cant do it if the raider moved first, clear as crystal to everyone and tourney i have seen in these parts.

So while FAQs would be great, maybe they are not so direly needed as WS makes them out to be...

But maybe we are just weired like that here. :p

It would be nice to hear some encouraging words on chaos legions and such for all those of us looking to flesh out our chaos collection like the marines have.

And the big question i have, is WHY did GW decide codex deamons, even just a few of the entires, could not be allied of CSM????

Right a few questions,

1) Where do you live (specifically, ask for a key as well)
2) Where do the rest of the Designers live (again be specific)
3) What size mallet would be best against Designers from GW?

And most importantly,
4) When will they bring out the childrens version of WH 40k, because we all know its gonna be coming, along with non-toxic-readily assembled/painted models....

How about these

"Why aren't basic rules not covered in the f&q that are debated in length on the warseer board such as the plasma get hot rule and ork power claws?"

"Games workshop said they would not squat anymore armies, so when is the next codex Catachins due?"

"The adeptus arbitus models that inquisition players were promised 5 years ago, are they near release?"

"Is converting no longer part of the GW experiance as the bit service was cancelled"

"I recently read that the above inflation price hikes were to cover r&d costs so games workshop now produces the best models in the world: Are you familar with Dragon Tamiya Revell Verlindin etc?"

"As warmachine's sales increase and GW's turnover dwindles, do you have any opinion why?"

"As new wargames and systems are being developed and released with Helldorado (with nicer models)the most recent, what will GW do to adapt?"

c. they're lazy 'roll a d6 for it'

Now this one bugs me. I have seen it brought up many times.
I have yet to read a rules system (Fantasy, sci-fi, or historical) that does not suggest this as a solution DURING THE GAME to resolving issues that come up, so that you can get on with it.

When you read it in the 40k rules, immediately following the suggestion is the line about discussing the problem after the game with your opponent, so that there is a mutual solution the next time it comes up.
It doesn't say "roll for it every time it comes up and complain about it later".

Maybe if more people discussed an issue after a game, they wouldn't have to rush onto the net and scream "This is Broken, can't GW fix it!!", they might have an idea to propose instead of immediately slagging the creators of a game that most people here seem to love.
Plus, GW designers may actually read what those on the net have to say if there were coherent, calm ideas out here.

That said, I think a question on a general FAQ timetable would be good.
Also,
2. what kind of time do they get for developing, testing, and then rewriting codices.
3.Why do Codices, and Army Books, never mention which edition of the main rules they were designed for?
If I were a new player and went into some stores, I could accidentally buy the first 3rd ed. Chaos book and not know until playing someone who was up on current rules.

4.What is the rationale behind the stealth reprint changes? (ala CSM3.5)

Probably because the codex is written for 5th ed when skimmers get toned down.

Probably because the codex is written for 5th ed when skimmers get toned down.

It won't be any less powerful in 5th with Fortuned skimmers and new damage table. Sure you can penetrate it, but it still makes for only a 16.6% instead of 33% chance of destruction on a penetrate, and an even greater chance of nothing on a glance, coupled with a 1/3 chance to ignore the hit entirely, more if in cover, which a friendly Farseer can fortune.

I'm not saying it's crap at all just that it's abilities under 5th appear to be better costed. For example, the need to take a farseer instantly bumps up the points cost.

Also, you're still going to need to cast Fortune, which means:

a) He can only cast it on one vehicle per turn.
b) He's not casting it on another unit.
c) He can't cast it if he's been killed.
d) Anti-psychic stuff makes it more difficult

It will work by using units together, rather than the current situation where the holofield falcon's a complete package on it's own. Throw in the rumoured defensive weapon changes, reduced movement for fast vehicles, and the falcon stops being the bargain priced "must have" option that it is now.

Don't know about you, but in english, we read from left to right, top to bottom. The slugga/choppa for shoota swap occurs before the choppa/PK swap.

I should note that I don't really care one way or the other about this, and have played against ork players with PKs in their shoota mobs without saying a word. It's just yet another example of sloppy writing. I'll never understand why there is all this 'swapping' going on in the new unit entries. Just give us lists of wargear combos for chrissake... It's not like the options are too exhaustive to do this now.
