Well I've got various projects on the go and I've been meaning to do a blog for awhile so I'll throw some pics up feel free to comment, ask questions etc.

First up some LOTR stuff:

Half Troll Conversions - I'm doing a Troll army of Far Harad and need 9 Half trolls and a Tribemaster so I needed to convert them so they don't all look the same.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Miscellaneous/trollgroup2.jpg

Half Troll Chieftain (Mahud Tribemaster) on his own - i changed the speartip after the picture above and added the skulls.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Miscellaneous/chief3.jpg

Corsair Reavers - I posted these before but there wasn't much comment LOTR not being overly popular here I think:

All of your stuff is really awesome. In particular I'm really impressed with the warmaster conversions. To sculpt that well on such tiny models is truly impressive. Your painting is top notch as well. Looking forward to seeing more!

WOW! Awesome conversions and those warmaster ogre figs look cool! I don't play the game but any chance of a scale shot? One thing...shouldn't Greasus have taken a bit out of that leg joint? :p

The Nurgle Demon Prince looks good so far can't wait to see more!

OOps bad angle here's an earlier picture where you can see the bite gone:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Ogre%20Kingdoms/GoldtoothWIP.jpg

and here's the latest picture of him just did more work on the treasure chest. I made the lid as well but it looks odd so I'll leave it off.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Ogre%20Kingdoms/GoldtoothWIP3.jpg

Here's an earlier group shot - slave giant to rear just a BOFA giant.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Ogre%20Kingdoms/OgreArmy.jpg

The Gnoblars are BOFA goblins and the Yetis are stone trolls the gorgers are BOFA trolls. I'll have to take another army shot soon.

The DP is very WIP I need to buy a Sentinel to finish him - I'm going for a cyber daemon look like the Soulgrinder for a 40K Daemon army.

only joking...

Actually no one produces a suitable mini for Rhinox's so I sculpted them as well then cast them:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Ogre%20Kingdoms/rhinox.jpg

Little and Large - the smaller one was done for a scraplauncher that I haven't built yet.

Bought a sentinel today so hope to get more done on the DP soon.

Here's another of my "greens" this is a head for a minotaur conversion it started as a high elf horse head I've swapped the horns for larger ones since.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Miscellaneous/Minotaurhead.jpg

The sculpting is all self taught over many years of many mistakes and some down right dire pieces but the more you practice the better it gets - I can do most things now but I still struggle a bit with chainmail and hands don't always worl out how I want them to.

That's very cool, I wish casting didn't appear to be such an alien concept to me... I've been directed to a couple websites where they were selling stuff, but with no clear directions or explanations, the whole thought of even trying is something too intimidating ><

Again casting is just one of those things you gotta do and make a mess of learn from it and try again. Hirstarts does a fairly good tutorial.

I've put the Daemon Prince together to see where I need to go with it. Bear in mind this is a very early WIP shot.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/dpwip.jpg

I need to rework the legs a bit, the torso will be blended into the chasis in a similar way to the soulgrinder and I have some other ideas but these things tend to evolve on thier own as I work on them.

Been away for the weekend so nothing to show yet. I've added the filler to the DPs torso so that I can sculpt the flesh over it.

The Minotaur is permenantly on hold until I see what happens with the Beasts of Chaos.

For the leadbelchers I made the cannon below and then cast it. I then cut the arms off the Ogres and pinned the new arms in place and resculpted any gaps.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Ogre%20Kingdoms/cannon.jpg

The metal casting is no more expensive the resin casting I'm just impatient so I prefer to cast in

Hope to have some new pics by mid week.

Well I hadn't planned to do any work tonight but I just finished the front of the torso:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Miscellaneous/dp2.jpg

I still need to add some details like veins and that but I'm happy with where it's going. Haven't started the back yet as I'll only put a finger in something I've already finished!

I've removed the horn for now as it kept breaking off I'll put it back later. I also added the exposed spine and brain cabling. I'll probably have the skin peeled back around the spine held back with flesh hooks.

Finished the other leg and did some work on the tabbard but thats it for tonight. I've added the tabbard as the gap between the legs needed something so this is an easy fix. I added the fly motif that seems to be appearing on a lot of Nurgle stuff recently. Much happier with the legs now. I need to source some power claws I'm thinking Kieger "Krash" Thrax from the inquisitor range not sure yet though.

That DP is looking better & better! If your worried about fitting on the base then GW do a slightly larger round base @64mm dia which has the same height as the small round ones. I think I got some in the new 40k base pack.

I do like the LOTR conversions as there is something so understated about them.

I am looking at starting casting stuff and I had heard that metal was expensive and difficult to do as you need more equipment etc. I was wondering if you had any tips, web links etc that might be useful? Cheers

I'll have to look for that base I hadn't intended on using this one anyway it was just to check the size.

As for casting I use Prince Augusts Casting Kit and metals - mostly cause their Irish so the shipping is cheaper and faster. They have a tutorial here:

http://www.princeaugust.ie/NewsletterImages/Tutorial/casting_metal_tutorial.pdf

Website here:

http://www.princeaugust.ie

Can't direct link to their pages the casting kit is in the accessories, tools tab. Costs €13

The metal costs between €5.50 and €8 an ingot depending how much you buy. I have a hot plate for melting the metal saves on damaging the cooker.

I use Micromarks Silicone for the moulds $35

http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=82083

Hirstarts has a good tutorial for mould making:

http://www.hirstarts.com/moldmake/moldmaking.html

So yeah it's expensive but you can produce alot from that stuff.

I'm not sure how long I've been sculpting really I started long before I ever picked up GW games but I've probably been trying the more complicated stuff for about 4 or 5 years now.

With both the casting and sculpting it's trail and error you get better as you practice learn from your mistakes and that. I had to make 4 or 5 moulds before I figured out what I was doing and I'm still learning new tricks now.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Miscellaneous/ct9.jpg

I repositioned the right arms a bit and added some small details. Hope to paint them over the May bank hoilday. Loads more LOTR stuff to show but I need to do some basing first.

I managed to get hold of one of those 65mm bases but it still looks to small so I discovered whilst ordering dead grass that Gale Force Nine do custom bases up to 99mm so I ordered a box of 80mm and 99mm one of them is bound to be right. I won't be doing anymore on the DP until i can stick him to the base.

I've decided on the plastic dread close combat hand with added claws like a mini defiler claw for the left hand. Anyone got any suggestions for the right arm I was half thinking the power scurge/flail thing from the defiler attach at the elbow not sure though but I just ordered the bit anyway so I'll see how it fits.

Thats the tail mostly done might add one or two little details it'll look a little odd until I finish the back which I plan to do tomorrow.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/DP%20of%20Nurgle/d910.jpg

The Red circles are flesh areas the blue circles are cabling its one of those parts that will be hard to see properly until it's painted.

Any more ideas would be appreciated sometimes you miss the obvious when your looking at a piece for so long.

Maybe hadn't given them much thought yet. I've started on the base as the arms haven't arrived yet - no pics till I'm happy with it.

Speaking of the arms does anyone know the weapon options for a Codex Daemons Nurgle DP. I assume it's one CCW like the CSM one - no shooting weapons. I know from the rumour round up that DPs are cheaper for Daemons but are more upgradeable. I need this to be generic enough to represent either a Daemon or CSM DP or a CSM Generic Greater Daemon.

Oh yeah my current weapons will be power claw for the left arm (CCW) - converted dreadnought fist and I'm going to use the defiler power scurge on the right but I'll remove the flail ends and resculpt them into tentacles so it looks like a mutated arm rather than another CCW.

dax
21-04-2008, 23:02
Looks like I won't need the dreadnought power fist after all.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/DP%20of%20Nurgle/dp14.jpg

This is still quite WIP took awhile to figure out. Funny what you can make from left over bits. The claws are from the defiler legs I used for the DPs upper legs, the body is an IG lascannon and there's some sentinel bits in there to.

I tried to mimic the pose of the soulgrinder - well as much as I could with the giants arm anyway. I only realised when I went to attach it that the forearm was too short so I had to lenghten it a bit but it worked out better this way as I could add the extra wiring. I hadn't planned to bulk up the muscle but I had to resculpt the join as I'd removed the armband so I thought what the hell. Still have to add the veins and that. Just the right arm to do now bits still haven't arrived yet.

Nah I'll probably make a mess of the painting :cries:
I've set aside 4 days over the May bank holiday weekend to paint him and I've a good idea how I want to do it.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/DP%20of%20Nurgle/dp18.jpg

Bear in mind the legs are held on with blu tack above so they're a bit out of the correct pose. I had to pin the 4 lower leg sections that I added with plastirod as the legs kept buckling under the weight of the torso but it's sorted now. I added flesh to the hips and knee joints as they looked a little plain as Hairy Norseman pointed out earlier.

Just the right arm - where is the postman? and the final details to do now.

Again with the wonky legs but thats blutac for you. The legs still need a bit more customising but I'll have to give it some more thought. As you can see the CSM bearly reaches the knee.

hey whats the main body of the model again?

Not sure if your joking after my reference to hiding the giant under as much GS as possible but the basic parts are:

Warhammer Giant - Upper Torso, upper arms, chaos head
Warhammer Orcboss faceguard - gas mask
IG Sentinel - lower legs, lower torso/leg axel and various other little bits.
CSM Defiler - upper legs, left power claw, right arm (if it ever arrives), tail
Necron Destroyer - spine, tail connector, various wiring and bits.
IG Lascannon - left forearm, gas mask tube
Warhammer Chaos Warrior standard - Tabard

There's a lot of other bits in there but they're the main ones.

Any other ideas anyone has before I finish let me know.

Patience has never been a strong point for me so I hacked up more of my defiler (2 legs gone already) and started work on the right arm - I'll replace the bit with the part in the post.

Much as I liked the idea of weaving the tentacles in and out of each other I just can't do it so I reverted to and earlier idea I had of a drill but I combined the 2 ideas to end up with a drill formed from the tentacles. Still a good bit of work to do on it but the basics are down anyway.

Unfortunately the plastirod hasn't photographed to well but I'll get a better pic when it's finished.

Finished the right arm the muscle ended up slighly bigger than the left arm but thats because of the hydraulics and given the size of the arm it would make sense anyway.

Just need to tidy it up now and add the final fine details. I'll be spraying him on Wednesday to start painting on Friday.

sssshhhh!!!! don't mention the shins. They don't look quite so thin in real life the picture makes them look even skinnier but yeah they have been bothering me. I've just added some shin guards. They need some work I'll post a picture later.

The blades are from the defiler legs I had to clip them off the do the DPs upper legs and then I figured I'd add them to the feet to make a sort of talon design. I've considered some form of cabling but I'm having trouble making it look "natural".

I'm thinking a bloodied pallid flesh something like the new VC Dire wolves but I will be blending to greens, blues, purples around the joints with the mechanical bits hard to describe really. I'm not a fan of the green nurgle look and I don't think it would look right on this anyway. I plan to finish the last of the sculpting tonight so I can undercoat on Wednesday.

Yeah the tail solved a rather tricky design problem I was having so thank you for that.

Right I've done a tidy up and added the final details ready for undercoating.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/DP%20of%20Nurgle/dp26.jpg

I've added veins around some of the junctions to the rear as well. I really wanted to do veins down the neck but they just won't stick no matter what mix of GS I use- might try again tomorrow night - but I don't want to over do the veins. Even the veins I did get to stick caused no end of problems. I also added more flesh to the upper legs as they needed a bit more.

To be honest after 50 or 60 hours work on this already I'm getting a bit sick of it so I'll be glad to move onto the painting. I only intended on doing the gas mask to show Cadaver what I was talking about for his defiler.

This the picture that started it all:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Miscellaneous/mask.jpg

I've broken him down into the bits for painting in this case the torso, 2 legs and the base which hasn't arrived yet - oh the other bits I ordered arrived and I'm glad I made my own bits up I just wasn't impressed with the dreadnought fist or defiler CCW when I held them.

Again very early WIP the missing eye will be filled with a bionic eye the left arm will have an ork warboss power claw and the right will be the sentinel chainsaw. I'll have to resculpt the arms as the Ogres are to short not a major problem though and the stomach will be simialr to the DPs.

Plan to do 3 count them as juggernauts or something I'll see what they're best suited to when I look at the codex. It'll be awhile before I do anymore on these. This was just a mock up to see if the works - actually it's my second attempt messed up the first but managed the salvage must of the parts.

I was pretty impressed with the Ogres that you did at the start of the thread.
Then I realised that they were warmaster scale. Oh my!
I also really like the giant daemon price. Some fantastic modeling. I have one comment though. I think his hip joint, where the robotic legs join the torso looks a little unbalanced or...off. Perhaps you could mould some more torso around part of the hip area so that it seems more a part of his body?

I'll be doing a 40K Daemon army over the next while so I really wanted some Cyberdaemons to make it more futuristic, the DP, 3 Ogre Daemons and a Soulgrinder are all I plan to do Cyberdaemon wise the rest will just be normal units but I might do a unit of the lesser cyberdaemons too.

I had assumed that the daemon prince that you were using sentinel legs, it's not until you posted the ogre daemon that I realised how large and awesome the sculpt is.

I used a bit of the sentinel legs on the DP but they looked too small so I swapped the upper legs for defiler legs. Have a look on page 3 I think it is and you'll see that a CSM doesn't even reach the knee!

I've gotten that with the ogres alot, people say meh they're OK copies of the GW ones then they realise they are only 22mm tall. I've added more flesh to the Hip joint since the photos. I'm in Dublin.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/DP%20of%20Nurgle/dp28.jpg

I'm having one of those days where nothing turns out quite how you want it to. The gas mask and horn have been particularly troublesome. None of the Metal has been done yet if there is any shading it's just the camera. The legs will be done in the same green as the claw and drill - I've painted the flesh parts of the legs but nothing else yet. I'm particularly happy with the back forgot to picture it last night. Nothing is finished as such yet there is a lot of fine detail to do - oil, grime streaks etc.

I'm going the start on the metal later. I was hoping to finish this part today but I might have to leave the tabard till tomorrow - it has to be the last thing I paint because of the way I'm holding the pin vice, I keep chipping the paint off the tabard.

@ Zealot - I wasn't sure how I was going to do the drill so I figured I'd just do it like the flesh and see what happened. I like how it turn out but I have a few little things to add - which will probably ruin it :p

@ Wildchild - Yeah thats how I imagined it a sickly flesh colour not the typical nurgle green. I burnt my hand the other night while cooking and there's a burn mark on it thats a very similar colur so I used it for reference

@ Hairy Norseman - I'll do close ups when it's all finished.

Thank you all for your comments has helped to keep me motivated - not that I needed much I was really eager to get this done.

If I finish the metal parts later I'll post more pics then.

I still haven't quite sort out the lighting yet I'll have to get the light box out for the final pics.

I only realised I'd forgotten the Bionic eye when I went to take the picture it needs some gloss but I won't do that till it's sealed. I don't konw if it's obvious in the picture but the other eye is just white and blood shot with no pupil to make it look like it's blind. I was cursing the Nurgle symbol on the gas mask yesterday but I think it turned out alright in the end it's painted like 3 pieces of bone that have been sawn through. The tabard ended up being the most "classically" Nurgle thing in the end.

I'll base coat the legs this evening and paint them tomorrow I need a bit of a break away from it tonight. Hopefully he'll be up and walking tomorrow night. I'm still waiting for the 80mm base to be delivered all previous pics have been on the 65mm base so he won't be based for a while yet. I'm going to keep the base fairly simple some rocks a little debris and a vulture picking the eye out of a cadians skull!!.

I'm a terrible teacher no patience for it I'm afraid.

The legs are mostly done now. Bear in mind this isn't the right base I've ordered an 80mm base he should fit nicely on it and the legs aren't glued yet again with the blu tac I struggled just to get one pic of him standing so I can't show off other angles yet.

I'm still waiting for the base to arrive so I haven't finished the DP yet - I took a break on Tuesday my hand started to cramp quite badly on Monday after I finished painting, may have over done the long painting sessions without proper breaks. I painted a lot of the elements for the base last night ready to stick down I even found a nurgling so he's painted up ready to go on it looks like he's fleeing in terror :D

I'm planning to do a Soul Grinder next in the red and cracked lava plates effect - should get him on Saturday. Probably try to paint him to the same display standard as the DP but then I'm going back to some army standard painting as the display stuff is quite draining.

I'll put up some good pics of the DP once he's done.

It's an 80mm custom base from Galeforcenine the standard 60/65mm base that I've taken previous pictures on is next to it for scale. I have to wait for the PVA to dry then I can Ink the sand and finish the details so I should be all done by Wednesday. As I said before I wanted to keep the base simple so as not to distract from the DP.

I've also started the Soul Grinder just doing the shading so not much to show yet.

I've finished the shading on the Soul Grinder and I hope to do the Highlighting on Saturday I'll post pictures then not much to see yet - It took 15 hours to shade there's just so much detail on the piece sometimes there is such a thing as to much detail!

Fantastic work, your skills are superb, both sculpting and painting. However I think that the model looks too clean for a Nurgle model, I don't necessarily mean it has to be dark browns, but a bit more grubbiness, perhaps wear the flesh meets the mechanical areas.

Beautiful Dax, great to see the beast all together and painted. On the soulgrinder, my defiler took so long to build and paint that I can't imagine doing a grinder for my khorne demons, even if I'd love to run 3 in the list!

Can we expect extensive conversions on your grinder??

Yeah it needs that alright but I'm afraid to go near it at the moment. I'll probably come back to those details later.

Oh the Soul Grinder is going to be painful alright, I think it'll take the best part of 3 weeks to do plus I found an oval shaped base to fit him (I hate unbased minis even if it's this big) so that has to be done too. I intended to do the base in such a way that he can be removed if necessary with no obvious joins. I have an idea for a broken daemon gate on the base - more work.

Here's how he is at the moment - not much to see yet I have the legs mounted on a strip of wood so I can paint them up easier and the armour plates are mounted on another strip of wood - so many pieces!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Soul%20Grinder/sg1.jpg

This Soul grinder is built fairly standard, I added a tongue and redid the teeth a bit as I cut some away in error whilst placing the tongue and I swapped the sword hilt as I don't like the horns. I plan to do second one at some point and put the power claw on the right arm instead so that'll take a bit of work.

Your Daemon Prince is excellent. I knew it was tall but I didn't realise until now just how tall; he dwarfs the marine!

I'm watching your Soulgrinder with interest as I have one on order. I'm not sure I'm that keen on red skin but green might just end up looking like some huge ork so I'll have to have a think about that one.

You say you've found a base for the Soulgrinder. Can I ask where from? I'd like to base mine once I've got him and I think my 2 Defilers could do with bases as well.

Anyway great work.

Yeah thats the reason I went for the skin tone on the DP the Green wouldn't look right. I like the look of the Soul Grinder of Khorne, I'm planning on one large piece for each God - DP Nurgle, Soul Grinder Khorne, Forgeworld Keeper of Secrets Slaanesh (the regular Keeper would look to small next to the DP thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D) and I haven't decide on Tzeentch yet.

This is the base:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Soul%20Grinder/sg2.jpg

The picture is close to actual size (its a touch smaller than real life) so go get your defiler and stick up to the screen to check the fit!!

It's Galeforcenines 10 man Skirmish base.

http://www.gf9.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=241

It's a good size for the Soul grinder without being to big. The holes can be filled with spare 25mm bases it'll be slightly thicker than a regular base but not by to much and it won't really be notice able. The Oval idea came from the LOTR Mumak.

No problem, I plan to buy some of the movement trays later myself - Veni Vidi Vici stock them in the UK. I also have to see if they'll do a custom lot for just one figure so that 40mm round based characters can be based on square bases.

Speaking of Bases I did a little work on the Soul Grinder base

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Soul%20Grinder/sg3.jpg

It's funny wht you can make from spare bits. The centre will be painted as bubbling lava and the rest will be done in stone I've carved the plasticard to give a stone effect but it doesn't show in the picture. Now I need to source a load of skulls - all the bits websites are out of stock.

Fantastic to see the Demon Prince finished, Dax - it looks excellent! I see your working on the sould grinder now, but I was wondering (because somebody always has to...) about the mech-ogre that you were building. Just curious, and I'm more than happy to watch the grinder's progress in the meantime! Spectacular work. This army is going to look unbelievable on the table-top.

The flesh is largely done now:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Soul%20Grinder/sg5.jpg

Having some problems trying to get a good photo. Ignore the tongue it probably won't stay purple for long.

You can see in the lower pic that I extended the flesh down in similar style to the DP. This was a slightly different approach to red flesh for me and it worked out really well so I'll probably use it on my bloodletters as well but I'll need to simplify it a little for them too many glazes on here to be bothered with on regular troops.

The Mech Ogre is shelved for now it just feels to much like an Ogryn and not a Deamon I might try again using some spawn for the torso.

Coolhand
17-05-2008, 19:24
Any chance of a recipe for the red?

Excellent as always by the way!

dax
17-05-2008, 19:42
Yep but you'll probably think it's not worth the effort :D

White undercoat

3 Thinned coats of Mechrite Red for the Basecoat.

The shading

the shade mix is 1 part Mechrite red to 2 parts Vallejo Burnt Cadmium Red to 4 - 6 parts Vallejo Smoke ink (I say 4 - 6 cause I didn't exactly measure it but there's alot more smoke than anything else) and 2 - 3 parts Purple Ink - have I lost you yet.

This is painted into the recesses and blended back and forth with Mechrite Red to get a even transition between colours. The deepest recesses have had thinned Black Ink added to create a really dark shadow.

The flesh is then given 3 coats of thinned Mechrite Red along the raised areas to lighten the colour again.

The first Highlight is a 2/1 mix of Mechrite Red and Vallejo German Orange - German Orange is great it's half way between Orange and pink but really isn't entirely either colour.

The second Highlight is 1/2 mix of Mechrite Red and German Orange

The Third Highlight is pure German Orange

The Forth Hightlight is 2/1 German Orange and Elf Felsh

The Fifth Highlight is 1/2 German Orange and Elf Flesh

The sixth highlight is pure Elf Flesh on the most raised points only.

The entire piece is then glazed with a 1/1/1 mix of Mechrite Red/Smoke/Red Ink to 20 parts water.

Once dry it's glazed again and again if necessary can't remember how many glazes I did.

Then the final highlight of Elf Flesh is reapplied

Then Glaze again

Then Highlight with Elf Flesh again

Finished - I bet your sorry you asked now!

So as you can see painting Bloodletters and Flesh Hounds like that isn't really an option. I'll need to cut down the stages but at least I have a pot of the shade - I mixed way to much partly because when I squeezed the smoke bottle the top came off!!!

Oh and here's something I threw together last night as I found a spare Horror from an old project:

Similiar to the officail one but I put my own ideas in as well. Nice little detail but not worth it for the time it takes to do.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Soul%20Grinder/sg7.jpg

Also Finished the head. you can see the extra teeth I added. Couldn't decide on the colour for the eye so I left it black with a white highlight. I did a little work on the sword but I'm not happy with it so I'll have to do more on it again. Well the sword was annoying me so I had another go at it. Still needs work but I'll see how it is when I finish the Hilt speaking of which you can see the conversion on the hilt just swapped the horns for blades off a Dark Eldar jetbike.

I think the problem is twofold - 1 in all my years painting I've never used Turquiose before it's a great colour but I'll need to try it a few more times in future to get the hang of it and 2 the highlights are done adding white and I never highlight with white I don't like the finish but my normal highlights wouldn't work here as it needs to end up white. Ah well live and learn.

Zealot what type of mawcannon did you use - I think I might be stuck with the Tongue now  It's a good kit to put together minimum filling after just around the arms really and the hand doesn't fit the socket at all.

Can anyone spot my mistake I only realised it earlier and I'm kicking myself over it - more work to do. (it's in the earlier full body picture).

I used the tongue. The army needs anti-tank and the 6 shots from the harvester along with the vomit are enough if you get stuck in w/infantry.

The kit is great for sure. 4 years ago they couldn't even have made this in plastic...

thanks I redid a few highlights on the sword since the last picture and I'm happy with it now.

Right I think I've worked out the big Tzeentch piece. I was reading the codex on Saturday and I really like the description of the Blue Scribes so I've been thinking abou how to do it, all I really know is I need 2 blue horrors a disc of Tzeentch and a load of scrolls, books and parchments and it has to look like it will fit in either a 40k or fantasy setting so I've come up with this:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Daemons/tz.jpg

I'll scratch build the whole disc from plasticard. The picture is actual size. Obviously there's a load of details to add when I do it but I know where I'm going with it now. Hopefully I can get the 2 Blue horrors to be writing in 3 books simultaneously. I need to order the plasticard and some bits for this before I can start on it. Any input anyone has would be appreciated.

Ah here when has chaos ever been practical :D

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Daemons/tz2.jpg

I found just enough plasticard to start so I've done the base. Eight books is hard enough can't fit a ninth in but there will be loads stacked on the disc.

I've deliberately darken the pictures as the plasticard tends to disappear with lighter photos. The centre piece is just there for scale. I think this might work. It's been designed so that I can remove it from the round base and put it on a square base.

Yep the closed books will be from the flagellants as will the flame top. I'll sculpt the open ones myself along with most of the parchments and scrolls. Might add some multi coloured candles over the books wax dripping down, pots of spilled inks etc - I have a lot of ideas but I'll have to see how practical (there's that word again) they are to sculpt. I'll have to buy a box of horrors and find 2 suitable ones. I'll have to mess around with the arms a bit but I have a load of feathers from empire state troops to make quills.I just fitted the horror I have and he comfortably fits and should be able to write on 3 books at once.

I just sourced 8 of these Ravenwing books couldn't believe it so I don't have to sculpt the books now.

A quick up date on the Blue Scribes Disc.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/40K/Daemons/tz3.jpg

I've finished the torch stand just need to slot the flame in when it arrives. I hadn't originally planned to make it like this but I found these bits and it just worked out, the base is from the defiler torso connector (left over from the soul grinder) the lower part of the pole is the barrell from the lascannon I used on the DP the upper exhaust vent is an autocannon and the burner is an upside down bell from the corpse cart.

I've added part of the book stand detail. I decided to make the blades turn into fish tails which hold the books - the disc was once a screamer after all. The details are a bit rough as this wasn't orginally planned but I'll fix the gaps later with some green or brown stuff.

I'll use the 2 Horrors that are easiest to convert - the 2 horrors with horns look like they'll work quite well I'll have to remove the horns (I think they're seperate anyway it's been awhile since I had some horrors). The problem is I can't use the ones that are splitting as these are already split so to speak. The book at least shows an illustration of one of the horrors so I know where to go. 3 arms will each hold a quill and be writing on one of 3 books in front of that horror or I might have one writing with one of his feet!. The arms and head tails will have scrolls wrapped around them. The 2 books that don't have a horror to write on it will each have a quill writing by itself loads of ideas but I'll have to see how they go when I actually have to make them.

Found a picture these 2

Well the books arrived and they're to big for the current disc but they're exactly what I'm looking for in every other regard so I've decided to build a new bigger disc, but I'm putting that project on hold for now (I need to get more plasticard anyway). I'm also struggling with the Soul Grinder's defiler parts just not feeling it at the moment so I've put that aside as well.

I'm taking part in the tale of LOTR painters so I'm going to start my Corsairs next weekend and try to get the bases finished on alot of my Harad so I should have new pictures next weekend.

It's a shame to hear on the pausing of the Blue Scribes (I was looking forward to that!), but I'm very content with seeing painted Corsairs of Umbar instead. I'm doing some as well for the Tale of LotR Painters, don't great minds think alike ;) Are you painting up your Far Harad Trolls for that as well?

dax
26-05-2008, 17:45
I've been considering doing the trolls along side the Corsairs it depends how next weekend goes I plan to do 12 Corsairs (96 points) to try and get some of the bulk of the miniatures done if that works out I'll try and do 125 pts each month of trolls over the 6 months that'll get the 750 pts. done really once the half trolls are done all I'll have to do is 1 troll a month.

The Blue Scribes will get done it'll just take a little longer I reckon I need to scale the middle disc (currently 40mm) up to 60mm and then scale up everything else at least this time I can allow for the tail design on the blades. The current disc only took one night to make so it won't take long to do a new one but I'm out of the thicker plasticard.

I said elsewhere I'd do a quick fur tutorial so here's my method.

Sculpting fur:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Miscellaneous/fur.jpg

1. spread out the greenstuff on the area to be covered in fur - keep it thick enough to score deeply alot of people put too thin a layer down and then can't get any depth.

2. score a jag pattern in the bottom of the green stuff. always start at the bottom and work up as your looking for an overlapped effect.

3. score more jags above the first row

4. and again for the last row (or do more rows if your doing a larger area)

5. use the round edge of the sculpting tool to shape the strands of fur press down between the strands to get greater depth.

6. score a small line down the center of the strand only go about 2/3s of the way down not to the tip.

I did the above piece in 10mins it's a little crude as it was only for demonstration I wasn't overly pushed to get it perfect. There are other methods but I like this effect - its like the chaos warriors fur cloaks. I have another way of getting that kind of result but it's far more complicated involving layers of greenstuff but for troops this method does a similar job much quicker.

3 Corsairs done for the Tale of LOTR painters:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Corsairs/cou1.jpg

The colour scheme is done to match my reavers plus I don't really like GWs scheme where do they keep getting the purple colour from cause there's none in the films actually I had a look at pics of corsairs from the films and they're all in black which doesn't look great on 28mm minis so I added dark blue as well. I'll finish the bases when the rest of this month's minis are done still have to do 6 more Corsairs and 3 Arbelasters. It's nice to be back to doing army level paint jobs. I haven't painted blue in ages so some of the highlights are a little rough but It shouldn't be a problem once I do a few more.

I'm back in sculpting mood at the moment so not much painted.

First up Mahud Tribemaster conversions as there are no mini's available

Foot:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/mahud4.jpg

Mounted (still have to add the back banner)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/mahud1.jpg

These are converted from regualar Mahud with some weapon swaps and added details. I left the Tusks off the camel as I don't like them.

Mahud Witchdoctor
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/mahud5.jpg

Done for fun more than anything else (there are no rules for this before anyone asks I'll use it as a Mordor Orc Shaman). I had a spare Watutu warrior from my Reavers conversions so I converted it up.

Last up Troll Chieftain:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/troll5.jpg

Still very very early WIP just got the basic shape and pose down really. I tried to mimic the pose of the metal troll chieftain a bit.

I'm kinda limited with the mini being Far Harad I can't have any metal (well none of the other far Harad mini's have metal) so that rules out most of the arms and heads so I have to convert the unarmoured stuff or cut off the armour plates - more work!.

As I wanted the chieftain to be more animated I swapped his mouth and resculpted the details it still needs more work though. I scrapped my early attempt at a bone sword and just converted the one that came with the kit instead. He'll have the whole neck cloth and ropes as well. I've made a greenstuff mold of a wicker shield so I'll be able to add wicker armour sections - only the chieftain will have these to set him apart a bit. As I said still loads to do.

C&C welcome.
Cheers Dave.

Small update on the Troll:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/troll7.jpg

Added the proper base and did some more work to the face, added upper lips and filled the neck. I appear to be out of greenstuff again , I was positive I had another pack so I'll have to buy some more in the morning before I can go further

Looking good Dax, is he going to be getting the bamboo armour treatment?

dax
14-06-2008, 20:31
Yep I have a green stuff mould made of a mahud shield so I'll be able to add wicker armour panels to his arms and that. There is so much detail to go on this guy I'll be working on him for days. The other 2 Trolls I've planned will be alot simpler no Wicker armour thats just for the Chieftain and they'll both have clubs. I'm doing the chieftain first as I've had plenty of practice on the Cave Trolls so I'm confident I know what I'm doing and I want to get the most complicated piece done first.

Right I got some more greenstuff (I need to buy shares I kneadatite I'm using that much!)

Here's the troll as he currently stands:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/troll9.jpg

Starting to get the fine details down now. Need to let this set before I do anymore.

I posted A tuturial over on TLA for the neck guard I'll repost it here over a few posts (4 picture limit and all that).

Neck guard tutorial:

I use the standard GW sculpting tool for most of my sculpting work. I have loads of other tools but thats what I predominantly use and is all I use here.

Mix up your green stuff - there's no special mix here just half yellow half blue.

Roll it into a long sausage shape with the palm of your hand - the lenght and thickness is up to you depends how you want it to look.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut1.jpg

Wrap the the sausage shape around the neck area. I trimmed the sausage to the correct lenght once I had it on the mini. The joint is at the back of the neck behind the skull - I'd blended the ends together before I took the pics. Smooth out the greenstuff with the flat round end of the sculpting tool and shape it until your happy with the base shape.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut2.jpg

Next you need to score what I call the base line into the greenstuff use the thin pointed end of the tool for this. Don't go too deep just enough to make a mark. Go all the way around. The line should be roughly in the centre of the greenstuff band.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut3.jpg

Now score another line above the first base line all the way around again.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut4.jpg

dax
15-06-2008, 19:07
And again below the base line.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut5.jpg

You get the idea now so keep scoring lines above and below the current lines till you've covered the greenstuff band.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut6.jpg

Now go back over the lines again and make them deeper and round them out a bit. Don't worry about being overly accurate these are supposed to be ropes made by an uncivilised people they'll likely be frayed and that in real life so just work the shape till your happy with it.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut7.jpg

dax
15-06-2008, 19:08
Next you need to do the ties that hold it together.

Roll another sausage shape much thinner than the first and cut a small section about 1cm in lenght off.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut8.jpg

You need to work South - north - east - west.

Place one end of the band under the chin and stretch it down and tuck it under (South)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut9.jpg

Cut another 1 cm piece and do the piece at the back of the neck (north) in the same way and then the two sides (East & West).

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut10.jpg

Finally add the diagonal ties half between the pieces already added.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut11.jpg

And thats it your done.

dax
15-06-2008, 19:09
I added additional ties under chin as I plan to add a trail with skulls to this piece later and I added more ties behind the skull to balance this out. I'll add the trail part to the tutorial when I do it.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut12.jpg

Thats the exact same way I did the cave trolls and witchdoctor. Hope thats of help. Any questions fire away.

Great tutorial mate! Loving the conversions your doing with these guys, and that Mordor Troll is looking great as well.
The mahud conversions look great as well. Actually, I can't wait to see how you approach these guys with paint. Is it just going to be the red-black scheme that you're currently using on the Haradrim?

15-06-2008, 23:40
yeah pretty much the same colours transferred over to keep everything uniform. The skin will be a brownish colour sorta Arabian if you can picture that. I've done a practice run on it and I like the colour so I'll see how it goes on an actual mahud model.

I have to get the Arbalesters done next Saturday (the rest of this week will be spent finishing the Troll chieftain). I might try the Witchdoctor on Sunday this is all dependant on me having a clear head - I can sculpt with a hangover but I can't paint well with one!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/troll12.jpg

Heres how to do it:

I made a double trail but a single one is done in the same way.

You need 4 skulls these all came from the soul grinder kit and 2 tassles they came from Chaos marine chainswords.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut14.jpg

Glue the skulls together side by side. Glue the tassles to the under side of the lower skulls.

Use a thin piece of plastirod to link the skulls together.

Glue in place and let set.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/tut15.jpg

Cover the plastirod in greenstuff. Score vertical lines into the greenstuff to create the rope work. Then score horizontal lines at the top and bottom of the rope work to form the banding.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/tutorials/TUT16.jpg

Smooth out the greenstuff until your happy with the effect don't worry about trying to get all the way around just do the bits you can reach the rest can't be seen anyway. Have a look at the side profile pic to see how I finished the banding.

Some updates:

First my Corsair Arbalesters, I posted these in the Tale of LoTR painters last Night.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Corsairs/cou9.jpg

Took me awhile to get them done. Hopefully I can get them based in the next few days.

I posted my Mahud Witchdocotr earlier and I've found a way of using him that I'm happy with. Basically I'm going to do a mahud hunting party but based on the Barad-dur army list as they can allie with Far Harad so the list will be

1 Mahud Witchdoctor (Orc Shaman)
1 Mahud Huntmaster (Orc Captain with bow and shield)
1 Mahud Tribal Drummer (Orc Drummer)
12 Mahud Huntsmen - 4 with spears, 4 with Bows and 4 with hand weapon (Orc Warriors)

So you've seen the witchdoctor (check previous page)

Here's the Tribal Drummer:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/mahud7.jpg

And the first Huntsman

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/mahud8.jpg

These are still WIP at the moment. Both still need to have their neck guard added (the archers neck looks odd at the moment because I respositioned the head the neck guard will hide this anyway). The idea being that they are fast moving huntsmen so they leave all their robes, armour and that behind and just carry the minimum kit hence them being near naked. The drummer will help with the fast movement in game terms.

I used Copplestones Watutu Warriors as the base model. The hair was cut down and a bald head sculpted instead. I swapped the arms for plastic corsair arms and added some other details. Just another 11 to do then!

C&C welcome.

UPDATED to add

Finished Huntsman 1:

yeah the copplestone mini's are agood match size wise my Reavers also used the watutu warrior torso's. I did a test piece for the paint job nothing fancy just to see how the colours work so I know how I want to paint them they'll have a brownish skin tone.

I haven't done anything more to the troll since the last pic. He still needs arm and leg straps and wicker armour sections added.

If I were as awesome at sculpting as you, I'd convert all of my mini's.

Believe me it's to much like hard work I only convert when I have to.

WIP of huntsman 2:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/LOTR/Far%20Harad/mahud10.jpg

I've run out of Corsair bits until the box I ordered arrives but he'll have the same arms as the first one - slightly repositioned. I was struggling to come up with a 4th archer pose (I know exactly how I want to do the other 2) and it occured to me to do one kneeling like the rangers but none of the Watutu warriors kneel so I had to cut him up and reposition him. He currently has 5 pins already and I've drill the shoulders ready for the arms. This is the exact same watutu as the drummer so you can see how much I changed him. Again the neck is unfinished but the neck guard will fix that.

I've removed the neck guard from the first huntsman as it's to big I'll replace it with a smaller one when I finish the second huntsman.

Thanks for the comments all.

Swifty I do the reds as follows (this is similar to my soul grinder which I think I described earlier):

Basecoat 3 coats thinned Vallejo Model colour Burnt Cad red over white undercoat
2/1 Burnt Cad Red/ Mechirte Red
1/2 Burnt Cad Red/Mechrite Red
3 Thin coats of Mechrite Red.
Highlight 1/1 Mechrite Red/Vallejo Model colour German Orange
Highlight pure German Orange
Highlight 1/1 German Orange/Elf Flesh
Final Highlight Pure Elf Flesh
Retouch the shading with a 1/1 mix of Vallejo Smoke Ink and Burnt Cad Red.

That might seem like alot of steps but most are actually very quick it's really just getting to the Mechrite red that takes time I paint 3 minis at a time to speed things up.

It's taken me years to get a red painting method I really like but the release of Mechrite red pretty much solved all my problems over night also German Orange is a great highlight for red it's part orange part pink in colour so it solves that problem of going to orange or to pink.

The Warmaster Ogres haven't progressed any further and won't for now as I have 2 Warmaster armies at about 4000 pts each now so I'm concentrating on other game systems for now.

This is what 4000pts of Warmaster Daemons looks like - there is a mirror in the background so it's not as big as it looks (I still have another 2500 pts to add to this at some point)

Excellent work as always Dax!

I recognise the Tzeentchian Overlord from you Avatar. Nice to see it at a reasonable size. All the Warmaster Daemons are great. I particularly like the various hounds and the chariots. Makes me want to dig out some Epic stuff and get painting.

I must also say a big thank you as well. Your advice about the Galeforce9 skirmisher bases for Defiler/Soulgrinder bases was great. The 6-10 man is just the right size. At some point in the not too distant future I might get a Defiler or my Soulgrinder finished and post pics on my Daemons log.

Talking of Daemons, how is the Blue Scribes conversion going?

HiveTrygon
03-07-2008, 20:20
That is so fantastic. The tunnel dweller is also a favorite of mine. Your demons are fantastic and show that even warmaster can have some truely amazing miniatures. Very nice work. I am also very fond of your Tzeentch overlord. ;)

Do you have any Khorne stuff for warmaster? Seems to be the only ones missing. Those new plastic bloodletters seem like something you could do magic with.
Edit:other than the bloodcrusher chariots. :)

dax
03-07-2008, 20:35
Yeah I was leaving Khorne to the end but then I got side tracked so far I've painted 1 unit of bloodletters, 1 Lord and the chariots.

I have the following converted to be painted:

Bloodcrushers (Daemon Cavalry) - unit of 12 I used an Epic juggernuat and sculpted the legs on to the waist then cast it. All I have to do is cut the bloodletters at the waist and stick the upper half to the Juggernaut with legs already attached.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Daemons/IMG_0497.jpg

Furies - (Daemon Flyers of Khorne) - started as a WE spite added the wings and some rock spires.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Daemons/FuryWIP2.jpg

Bloodthirster (Greater Daemon) - Modified the axe needs to be finished

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Daemons/bt.jpg

Overlord - old metal Gor (chariot Driver)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warmaster/Daemons/KhorneOverlordWIP.jpg

Mmm what else Hordes are Bloodletters, hounds are fleshhounds these where both produce, Chariot as seen earlier, Second Lord convert from an old metal Ungor, swarms will just be regular swarm painted in reds and black. The Daemon Beasts are Dragon Ogre Bodies with 2 Cold one heads kinda Cerberus style (3 wouldn't fit) I have to finish these so no pics yet .

give_me_a_d I've shelved the Blue Scribes project for now rumour has it there is a mini for them to be released later so i'm waiting to see it first then I'll decide if I'll continue with mine, use the official one or mix the 2.
