UPDATE August 15th:

On Page Four

==================================================

Inspired by Synapse, I decided to realise a life-long dream and make a small army of Pre Heresy Death Guard using the same true-scale technique.

Here is some of the artwork I hope to emulate in my True Scale Death Guard.
+++++

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/Mortarion-1.jpg

Wow... what can you say? It's just an awesome piece of artwork. I'm not ambitious, skilled or hardworking enough to attempt a true-scale Mortarion though; the closest I plan for is a Captain in Iron Armour with the same Dark Gold/Bronze armour with laquered off-white sections on it.
+++++

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/Deathshroud-1.jpg

Again, an awesome piece. These are the Deathshroud, Mortarion's bodyguard. I really like that this keeps the DG imagry, but pulls away from the plain-jane style they are usually depicted as. The red cloth against the off-white and Death-Guard-Green looks awesome, no? I'll likely be basing the imagry of my Astartes off of these two gentlemen.

Model pics in next post (damn four pic limit...)

Here is the test miniature for the Death Guard. I decided to go the 'Deathshroud' route with them, ie still off-white, dirty and brutally functional yet with gothic ornamenture. Tell me what you think of the scheme; you'll see I'm not even close to starting to paint the actual truescale marines, so there is plenty of time to change the 'look' if people don't think this is the right direction to take.

The truescale Death Guard are coming along again, after a long delay. WIP Pics of them are below.

Whew! After about 45 minutes worth of simply burnishing the kinkd and lumps out of the thighs and Shin Guards, let me tell you, I regret not just making them Plague Marines! One of the shin guards is not yet done, as I ran out of green stuff...

More coming in posts below...

Shoudler Pads:

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/RSCN0342.jpg

These were mainly inspired by the cover of 'Horus Rising' as well as (it goes without saying) by Synapse's excellent World Eaters. They were also the single most frustrating part of my work so far... the studs were really hard to get the same size, and I lost count of the number of times I smudged them while working on the other side. Again, the front stip will have studs on it as well... but I ran out of green stuff.

And yes, that red stain in the left corner is blood. You may have noticed the band-aid on my hand in earlier pics... I cut myself quite deeply when scraping off excess GS from next to a stud.
+++++

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/RSCN0346.jpg

Giant Chainsword! This thing + 2.5 metre tall armoured killer = Run!

The chainsword was quick, easy, and fun. Even if you aren't doing truescale stuff, I can heartily recommend this conversion to you for a chain-glaive or a two-handed chainsword.

All in all, I'm very happy with what I have so far. This is my first time using Green Stuff, and I was very luck with the results I have.

Well. I got some more green stuff, and started on the left leg.

However I fu*&ked it up. Royally. Like, 'Sultan of Brunai' Royally.

Basically, I got a couple of phone calls while I was half-way through sculpting and just forgot about it for perhaps 40 minutes. Now, the small batch of GS I mixed up for today was pretty far gone already, as I had some some rivets on the right shin, and touched up the backs of the legs. So by the the time I got back, it had pretty much dried, and there wasn't much I could do to it. :( Anyway, you'll see how bad it is below...

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/RSCN0348.jpg

Ugh. I'm just keeping it for now, hoping to sand/scrape out the imperfections once it dries. If that doesn't work (and I doubt it will) I can always just rip off that layer of GS on the shin, and add a smaller layer to the thigh as a 'cover up'.

And thank all of you guys for the support and nice feedback. It means a lot.

Well no, I couldn't salvage it to a decent stadard. This means the Marine won't be finished by Wednesday. Sorry. :(

On a happier note, I finished both arms. Pics tomorrow when I get my camera back. (its at school atm, brought it there for an art project)

Eh, I've always loved PH stuff, and had a special soft spot for Death Guard even before Flight of the Eisenstein came out. I had a PH Death Guard scheme for Space Marines in DoW (which was my intro to 40k), with these (http://wh40k.ei8ht.net/joril_sm.htm) Death Guard Banners and Badges.

I really see chaos as a negative thing, something that the noble Astartes who now 'follow' it are trapped in, and something they regret immensely yet are bound forever to serve. That bitterness spills over into the genocides and atrocities they commit against their enemies... and themselves as well. So I hate chaos with a passion. I hate it. It corrupted and duped the greatest hope humanity had for a bright and peaceful future by perverting their sense of honour, using the very loyalty and unswerving senses of martial pride and duty that made them so great to destroy them.

Besides, I'm a bit of a mysophobe. Nurgle wouldn't work for me. :p

I do find some of Tzeentch and Slaanesh's doctrinal practices (Worshipping Knowledge and Creativity for their own sake, respectively) appealing in a way... but that small gap in my character is nothing faith in the Emperor can't fill. ;)

Ok... unfortunantly, I've had the flu the last couple of days, and haven't managed the strength to do much besides sleep. And play Company of Heroes. ;)

Last night, feeling significantly better, I finished off the bolter arm. Here it is.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/Bolterarm.jpg

I cleaned up a few of the rivets (yes, now both sides have an even number :o ) I added a tattered Oath of Moment because I was sick to *death* of doing ********* rivets. Christ. I hate the bastards.

So yeah. Unfortunantly that's the only progress I have atm. But I'm working on the chest armour as we speak, so more updates will hope fully follow soon.

i understand that truescale = bigger but thats it. what exactly does it mean?

its truescale to the other miniatures.
A Space Marine is about 8 feet tall and a IG Soldier would be around 7 feet tall. But both are of equal height as a miniature. Therefore you stretch your space marine to truescale, by adding some mm at their legs etc.
Some have taken truescale a lil bit over the limit and made 40mm Scale miniatures (some are even closer to Inquisitor Scale than to 40k Scale!).

Praexes
22-04-2008, 21:22
It's even worse than that. Do you think the average poorly fed hiver guardsman is seven feet tall? more like 5-6.

Ciaphas Cain describes himself as exceptionally tall, even among the typically large Valhallans, at just under two metres or 6'4"/6'5" (about my height, coincidentally :p). Yet, when acting as a Imperial Guard Liason embedded with a Space Marine chapter, he is dwarfed by them.

Countless other fluffy sources such as Horus Rising or the Ultramarines Omnibus tell of the Astartes as being uniformly about .7-1 metre or 2-3 feet taller than the average human.

...plus giants in armour with chainsaw swords = win.

synapse
22-04-2008, 21:31
a IG Soldier would be around 7 feet tall.

regardless of what height we disagree marines are... guardsmen are 100% normal humans (depending on the planetary conditions, but, on average, nomal) that means a normal guardsman is a tall average of 6', probably a bit less, lke any real world soldier.

Update! Yaaayyyyy...

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/Torsounderlayer.jpg

Finally did the underlayer of the torso last night. This is an under layer (which, as the name suggests) will be under the final layer of GS on the Torso. It'll add shape to the final layer, which will be rolled into a smooth patty approximately the right size, then applied, manipulated and trimmed, and will then finnaly have details added. The big strip of GS down the chest is to give the breastplate a sharp curve/pleat/angle down the middle, as seen here.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/Bitterness-1.jpg

The belly plate is the only final part of the work I've done. It'll have cabling on it running up to the breastplate. The groin guard is having a similar sheet of GS added to it, ala the breastplate.

All in all, everything needs to be cleaned up a little, but that can come later. This guy is nothing if not a testing ground for later models.

Cheers,

looking great, cant wait for more!
you guys know that 1000 years ago humans were a foot smaller than today? so in 28,000(?) years humans will be BIG, if not REALLY BIG (if we still exist) therefore a marine is REALLY REALLY BIG i mean were looking at 15-20 ft here (provided we keep up a similar rate of growth).
lecture out the way, i supose GW's 30k millenia's humans are the same as today

Praexes
27-04-2008, 03:01
Actually, caucasian humans found in the 11th Century England, according to bones found, were about our hight. Reason: They had a good diet of lots of grains and dairy.

Height started taking a nose dive during the 'little chill' when the earth went into a mini-ice age in the 14th century, and went down even further in the 17th-earlier 20th centuries because of poorer diet and ****** conditions in the cities. so basically, hivers on nutriet pastes will be 5 ish feet tall. Human height is already written into our DNA, and you are slated to reach a certain height before you are born. Whether you get there or not is determined by factors in your life such as nutrition and general 'wear and tear' on bones.

Any tips on the marine?

The hand with the gi-normous chainsword isn't on yet; that's just bluetack holding it in place. I can't work on it yet because the greenstuff on his left shoulder is still wet.

Besides that, the only work left is to do his right shin armour, and a robe which will cover part of one leg as well as half of the chest. The backpack is ready... it's just a regular SM powerplant with a small plasticard spacer. The back needs to be cleaned up as well.... but then again, it'll have the robe over it.

Anyway, I'm fairly confident about the robe. The Oath of Moment pinned to the bolter arm was a test for it, and it turned out decently enough, and I have ideas and experience on how to make my cloth better after the first try.

Comments please. I'm still not sure about the chest armour... it looks wierd to me, yet I'm oddly attached to it... ah well, it'll be mostly covered by the robe... so I can always change the style up on the next marine.

Praexes
28-04-2008, 05:39
@ Dasqueek-Master Assassin: This project was my first try at Green Stuff. Never touched the stuff before; but let me tell you, it wasn't an easy starter course. Lots of trial and error, and lots of good advice from Synapse's log.

@Cdaws08: About 20 minutes of burnishing with a flat tool, and then scraping with an xacto knife. It's a b*tch. The other leg got fubar, and had to be scrapped... I've been putting off doing it because the first one was so frustrating.

I think I'm going to shave off the studs on the leg (they're slightly off centre) and replace it with a super-awesome special surprise of doom.

Well. Maybe not that special.

But more soon.

Thanks for the encouraging comments. It means a lot, and keeps me going through the frustration and annoyances this thing has presented.

Praexes
28-04-2008, 17:16
The chest was an original idea that kind of took on a life of it own... But yeah, I'll be changing it.

I would replace the studs but I don't have any round plasticard. And my only reasonable source for hobby stuff is eBay, as I live in the middle of f&cking nowhere. But heh, the robe will cover all the mess-ups (hopefully) and I'll learn from my muck ups on the second model.

I like the chest, just hape it up a bit.
As for studs, look into using the heads of pins. I mean the ones with flat heads. Just trim the length and a simple bit of drilling should gurantee a uniform look to all your studs

Now that I look at the chest, it seems that the bits at the top arent the same width or length.
But I do like the idea.
Try trimming it all off and rebuilding it.

I was tired of messing about with Green Stuff, so I threw together a Istvaanian propaganda poster to decorate the urban-style bases of the Squad. Hopefully, variations of these will decorate the ruined walls along with barbed wire and other cool stuff.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/ResisttheInvader.jpg

And yes, besides the Aquila, that poster was made from scratch in Photoshop. :D I plan to make another one featuring a silouette of a Mk IV Marine with a caption reading: 'Have you seen one of these in your neighbourhood?' Or some similar line. The obvious irony is that there is 'one of these' striding past the very poster, shrugging off hails of traitor fire. :skull:

Yeah, it's Istvaanian (or Isstvanian, depending on which GW publication you decide to go off), printed by Governor Vardus Praal and the Warsinger Temple, urging Istvaanian citizens and soldiery alike to raise arms against the 'Invader'... the loyalists from the Death Guard, Sons of Horus, and Emperor's Children who were sent down to crush the rebellion... and them virus bombed. :cries:

Well, good news: I fixed the camera charger! I just had to replace the first half of the chord with a compatible printer chord.

I also did an Iron/Maximus, MkIII/IV Armour chest. I played around and made some bullet holes as well, even though most of it will be covered by cableing and other fun stuff. Also, the shin guards will be changed to incorporate knee pads as per Mk. IV Maximus Armour design pictured below.

So, Mk III (Iron) and IV (Maximus) Armours respectively:

All that remains is to add definition to the left leg, bulk up the right leg so it can be covered by a robe, and do the robe itself. The backpack/powerplant will be glued on last so I can paint more easily. The end is in sight, barring (another) unforseen castastrophe!

More to come soon.

Started uni last week, haven't had a lot of free time. The robe will be started this weekend, provided I get some Procreate on time.

Also, shameless advertising: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=150287034497

Battlestar Galactica DVD box set (seasons 1-3) on eBay. I'll be using the proceeds to fund more Green Stuff/Procreate, some paints, a few new brushes... and The Horus Heresy: Collected Visions. F&*k yeah. Been looking forward to getting that book for a long time. :chrome:

Likely Scortched Brown or Black for the rims, with a mud/snow base or muddy urban with barbed wire bits. Haven't given it a ton of thought, honestly.

My order from the warstore is on its way. Offer suplications to the Omnissiah and pray for a speedy delivery!

I also picked up Collected Visions from eBay for $25 (!!) USD. So that should be cool too. Been looking forward to getting that book for a while now. ;)

Mein Gott! It's huge!

Seriously, dude, I'm not really rolling with the chest. The rest of your sculpting is brilliant, as usual, but the torso is way out of proportion.

Certainly more ambitious than I'm willing to do.

It's just camo green, then Catachan Green 3:1 Skull White, then Catachan Green 1:1 Skull White, then Catachan Green 1:3 Skull white with pure Skull White highlights.

Basically on the first coat, I completely based the mini in Catachan Green except for the parts which will be metallic.

Oops, double-post and all that, but...

Yeah, I agree. This is the test-model for my GS attempt though, so yeah. Next one will be (if I ever find time to get this one finished!) less bulky chest wise. But also, IMO this (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/RSCN0445.jpg) picture is at an odd angle... in real life, it looks slightly less gi-normous.

See here (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/RSCN0444.jpg) for a better representation of the way it looks for realsies.

Don't get me wrong, it is a little too big... but that first picture does exaggerate it a bit. I'll have to make the robe extra thin or it sure will balloon even more out of proportion! :p

All right, it is done. But not so well.

After I finished, I sat down and tried to keep in mind that this was a test model, and that I couldn't allow any future Death Guard conversions to be held back by this model's limitations and design flaws. This was, after all, the first time I had used green stuff... or even attempted a major conversion, and my skills (and cynicsm) have greatly improved because of it - but the wages of stagnation are death. ;) With (painful!) experience, greater opportunities are opened up, and the goal of creating better stuff is attainable.

Thanks in equal measure to everyone who followed this test project and gave me advice, criticism and support to guide me on my faltering, snail-paced way.

So: once I had finished, I sat down and drew up a 'unified vision' of what I wanted the squad to look like, an obvious step that, in my zeal and enthusiasm the first time round, I had failed to achieve... besides a fast google search of '"pre-heresy" + "Death Guard"' and a general idea of what I had always thought marines should look like. I came up with Death Guard more centred around Mk III Armour, with more apparent Legion-specific heraldry and symbols. The test model was kind of just a generic pre-heresy marine, decked out in Mk IV armour with a bolter and chainsword.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/DeathGuardConceptDrawing.jpg

Next, I gave the brave Sir Test-Model a hero's burial. It is traditional on Barbarus for the heroic fallen to be immolated on a pyre fueled by noxious fumes and highly flammable chemicles. I, being confined to a backwater planet with only the sketchiest contact with the rest of the Imperium, had to make do with Nail Polish Remover and Petrol. Given the circumstances, I think he would have been grateful at the attempt to reconstruct his Legion's traditions. Word has been sent to his home-planet of Barbarus for a single Iron Skull to be driven into the wall of the Fallen in his memory.:cries:

So. Work on the new design has begun. But I'll refrain from posting pictures till I have a mostly finished model... I'll just say that I've found procreate to be an absolute life saver so far! See you at the next update!

More soon! I have the technique for making and mass-producing the helmets Mk III style ironed out after a fair bit of trial and error... I'm working on the bodies/chests now, and will do the legs as soon as my plasticard comes in the mail. I've been doing these several at a time, assembly line style, to at least pretend to try and maintain consistency and 'symetry' between the marines.

As I said earlier, I want to refrain from posting pictures till I have a mostly finished prodict. But hang in there! More soon!

Oh wow, comments?

Uhh, I actually have been planning to get some more work done on them this summer, but till now a dastardly tag-team of "being swamped with papers for school" and "a broken camera with no battery" have been smashing me in the face with the infamous "no recent updates" folding chair.

I hereby promise to get lots more work done by the end of fall though. Maybe.

I have a question for any of you following the thread who might know about re-posing and heavy conversions:

I need to know my best option for repositioning the feet on terminator legs. I'm worried right now about damaging the little armoured shoes too much if I try to remove them with a hobby knife or saw, so I'm at a loss and don't know how to proceed.

Orange1095

I would just cut away all shoe-ness and make a new one when you reposition the legs.

Daemonlordabraxes

So, Mk III (Iron) and IV (Maximus) Armours respectivelyhttp://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/MkV-HeresyArmour.jpghttp://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h7/prazail/MkIV-MaximusArmour.jpg

Yeah, not so much, that would be a Mk. V Heresy armor and a Mk. IV MAximus

Heh, yeah, I linked the wrong picture in my photobucket account. Also, did you ever post on the thousand-sons.com forums? I have some great memories back there. Too bad Mit shut it down. :(

Thanks for the advice orange. With all honesty, I haven't done any work in the last 2 months or so, and I don't know if I'll be able to do any in the near future. This project will continue though. :/
