Ok folks, time to let you into my world... (you lucky devils)
Thought I would create one big log of all I'm painting that doesn't fit into my Cryx log (for all things zombie pirate).

Please leave C+C even if its mean. I've hit a rut in my painting recently, and need a bit of advice to get past it. I'm not a bad painter, but I feel my stuff doesn't really zing... How do I push myself to the next level. (Without taking years over each model, as I have a huge backlog to catch up on... like I ever will!)

First up is a quick shot of my gaming room. No table yet, thats the project for when I'm working and can afford things like timber.

So, here is my "goldmine" of stuff. Highlights include a pristine copy of Space Crusade, around 10,000k of Dark Elves from various generations, 8,000k+ of Empire a box full of Rackham toys, and three Cryx armies. Sorry its just a bunch of boxes, but I piled it all up to get it out of the way. One day this will be replaced by painted models. (I hope).

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Goldmine.jpg

Next is my library. I've been cutting down (see my sig for books for sale please!) but there are still plenty of GW books, going back to 2nd ed 40k/4th ed fantasy, along with a pile of SG stuff, and randomly my Discworld collection as my other shelves were full. The bottom shelf is every WD going back to 188, along with some random issues I picked up along the way.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Library.jpg

Finally, here is where the magic happens. I use a mix of GW/Vallejo/PP paint, (most of it is in a tool box hidden by my feet. The box to the right is actually a stack of three boxes full of scenery junk and random tat that will one day be a beautiful gaming table. It pays to be a horder in this line of work...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Workbench.jpg

So, thats my room, now on to the models.

Cheers.

Jon.

Ok, here are some bits of 40k I'm working on. I don't game so much at the moment, and am unemployed so get a lot of painting time. Sadly, most of it ahs been claimed by Mario Galaxy recently but I now have all 120 stars, so am determined to chain myself to the desk.

I'm working on a smallish nurgle force atm, here is the lord, and a squad of PMs... still got a second squad, three termies and some nurglings to go(yes I know they are not in the army list anymore, but I like em ok...

Question is, how do I round this out to a good force? Answers on a postcard to my PM box please...

Things have been quiet on the fantasy front recently, but I have painted this for the paint a special character comp on saturday... C+C more than welcome. Not my best piece ever, but it turned out ok.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/malus.jpg
Sorry for the lousy shot. I haven't set up my photo booth since I moved.

Also, felt like painting some stuff from the BFSP box... didn't get that far though, before I got distracted.

Finally, here are some Epic bits I am working on.

First up my Termie stand that got me back into painting epic (and saw me explode a bottle of Vallejo black paint all over me and my shiny white Mac

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/termies.jpg
Also I have recently painted a Devestator detatchment, which look a bit like this, although obviously 4 stands not 1.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Devestators.jpg

Now, my main Epic army is guard. (Its the only way I can field Guard in the way I think they should be. I've got a prob though. I am repainting my army, but can't decide on colour scheme. I've done two different stands. One is Vostroyans, the other is Steel Legion. Please advise which is better in your opinion. I will model vosty hats at a later stage if people go that way! Crazy... maybe!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Bostys.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/desert.jpg

Ok, thats it for now. I've been promising to show an old DElf model I own to someone for a while now, so expect to see that soon. Its my old painting from about 12 years ago though, so looks suitably awful.

Cheers for looking, please leave your thoughts.
More to follow...

Regards...

Jon.

This is good work DM, your painting has a neat, crisp style. Your epic BA are a lot neater than mine. :(

I was going to vote for the SL colour scheme, but I prefer the Vossies when they are done that well.

Only thing is, you are already doing a red army for the BA - would they be easy to distinguish at 6mm scale?

I kinda have a thing for crimson/red armies (yet have never played Khorne... strange...) so am happy to paint the vostys... they are a little more crimson than the BAs, who get a BA Orange layer and an ink glaze of red to finish so hopefully that will differentiate...

Thanks for your kind words.

Jon

ok, for my buddy oliveraso, I present without further ado, the non released sorceress/hag queen I own.

I painted this many a year ago... so maybe I will update soon.

Hey, that's a nice log you got there.:) Very diverse stuff and all of it interesting. Your painting looks very good too. The Plague Marines look good unusual scheme and good conversions. The champ looks good to; but please don't tell me that CSM are allowed to have Lightning Claws nowadays.;) Anyways, the choice of colours is very good and the painting is clean.

For the Epic IG, I'd say go with the Vostroyans. The other scheme looks very good too but since it's the standard scheme, it would be refreshing to see something else. May I suggest to give the rubble on the bases of the Vostroyans a bit more highlighting to make it look a bit more grey rather than anthracite?

I want that sorceress/hag.:p Maybe it's the painting but I can't even recall seeing that one on solegends and similar sites. Looking forward to the redone version of it.

Last but not least, Malus darkblade on foot. I really regret not going to the first and so far only Austrian Games Day, where they had the mini for sale. The highlighting looks a bit rough in places and I'm not too keen on blue-skinned DE but you got a very nice scheme. Did you use greys or metallics for the bright highlights on the armour?

dancingmonkey
25-04-2008, 15:56
Cheers Sigur... forgot to mention that the base isn't done on the vostys... I just wanted feedback before i did a whole bunch in one scheme or the other.

Malus' face came out pretty weird tbh. I used purple in everything, so tried to use it in the face, but it didn't work.... hey ho. Sadly, I am one of those people who likes grey elves, but this was trying to take it a step further...

Just checked my dex, Lords can have twin lighning claws as far as I can see.
Tell me oif i'm missing something blindingly obvious...

The Sorceress does appear somewhere... my cousin got it from MO way back in the day, but I don't think many got out. So I'm quite lucky there. Got a varient Imperator the same way, although that did see a brief release during the EPic mag period... only place I saw it before that was on Dave Andrews shelves in a couple of WD photos...

Hopefully I will get some more pics up tonight. I hate the fact I can't stay true to one thing at the moment. Just keep bouncing about... Its currently Rackham hybrids... tommorrow... who knows..

Cheers...

Let's see some more vostroyans. I've never seen them in epic, and they look great.

dancingmonkey
25-04-2008, 18:40
Ok, seeing as my buddy GPaul is working on epic this weeken, I will too. Hopefully I will finish my infantry and get a tank painted for practice.

Plenty of lego hidden in the shots. I tend to resort to lego to placate the missus.Although her Khador army will one day appear on this site!) Theres a couple of tie fighters, the crawler, an x wing, A wing, snow speeder and a couple of other bits. TRex is guarding the library also... hehehe

funny no one mentioned the big axe... guess everyone has one these days ;)

thanks for the kind words everyone. Expect more soon.

Looking good Jon,

Nice to see the plague marines getting done at last :P are they the ones you bought when we were working together?

The Malus is nice, but definately not as nice as the FW one you painted (which I think I still have pictures of by the way)

Cheers

Dan

PS, expect a pm ;)

dancingmonkey
26-04-2008, 15:48
Yup. those are the very same plague marines... tragic isn't it. Three years later and they are still not complete. The malus (FW) can be seen on Mr Abnett's website which makes me happy!

Hopefully will try sculpting the vostroyan hats at epic scale today.
PM returned also...

BTW, just won an Empire battalion in the 25 years celebration. Which was a nice surprise... like I needed to add to my 8000+ pt empire army... Still, free toys hooray!

For the scale, the hats look great. How long does it take, and how many stands do you have?

dancingmonkey
26-04-2008, 19:10
Each hat takes about a minute or so... would like to find a quicker way... maybe a two part mould I squeeze over a blob attatched to the model, then leave to dry and clean up...

I've got plans to do a full 6 platoons plus the HQ, so 36 squads (at 2 bases a squad) plus 6 command stands, plus the 13 stands in a command HQ. (Appologies if these figures are slightly out...) This week I hope to achieve the first platoon. I need some new green stuff though. THis is a couple of years old, and the blue side is really hard, so its not too sticky, and doesn't scuplt well, New pack should ease that a little...

I was going to drill out the hats and scupt over a plastic rod or pin, but the heads are a little to small to take well to drilling... Pity as it would help keep consistency...

I'm going to explore the mould idea, kinda like the old playdo sets where you put a blob on your finger, then cast it into a weird mutant digit using a mould. If that makes sense...

cheers.

Jon

Your a masocist DM! Very nice work.

Why not use some glass paper to make the impression into the greenstuff? that way you can put a blob on the head and use the roughness of the glass paper to give the texture while you shape it into the hat?

Just a thought

dancingmonkey
27-04-2008, 09:52
I had a similar though but using an old fantasy model with fur. Will give it a try later. I find that doing it by hand with a modelling tool helps me squash the hats into shape a bit, but I reckon after the first paltoon I might be a bit crazy, so will have a shot at this idea to speed it up.

Cheers for the advice.
I'm going to try and get a couple of squads painted today, (luckily the hats can be done whenever, so I can go back and sort them out later) and also try a chimera for the tank scheme...

Pics asap.

Excellent work DM. On my limited experience with greenstuff moulds, I'd say by the time you have positioned each mould and wiped off the olive oil (or whatever demoulding oil you use) your minute is already up.

These are definately worth the effort, keep it up!

Ok, here is the first fully painted stand, with hats, and their transport.
Hope you enjoy...

Hats were done from right to left, they get better with each one, so hopefully this will start to become better sculpted as time goes on.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Epicvos1.jpg

I'm already planning the next crazy phase of the project. (I've decided to only focus on my Epic for the next month till I have the full 1000 pts done, then pick another project, just carry this one on)

So, the company marking (Black company, red platoon, command tank) just looks poo, so how do I resolve it? The old fasioned way. I'm going to make a pennant design, triangular and halved, with a central circle for squad number. This will be attached to the tanks via a small rod/arial. Hope that makes sense. Pics should clear it up once I have made the basic design. These will be printed so I can get identical look across the army.

I'm going for black company purely because my missus said it looks good. I'm not sure if the Vostys use this marking method, but it will do it for me.

Incedently, my Epic list of toys currently runs thus... hopefully it will all get done in the fullness of time:

1x L.Russ Platoon. (10 tanks)
1x L.Russ Demolisher Platoon (9 tanks)
1x Bombard Platoon (9 tanks)
1x Manticore platoon (4 tanks... need more)
1x Deathstrike formation (2 tanks)
1x support company (3x Griffon, 6x hellhound)
3x Hydras
2x Chimera formations + 3 extra Chimeras.
11 Sprues of Infantry (the older sprue with the hvy weapons and catachans etc.)
5x Sentinel
2x Shadowsword
1x Baneblade
3x small flyers
2x big flyers (can't remember the names)
1x Reaver
1x Imperator (varient)
10x various Knights... metal and plastic.

Soooo, quite a big project, especially given the hats and flags. Its gonna be a fun ride. Hopefully I can get 1000pts a month done. That should be achieveable...

Let me know what you folks think of the stuff so far, if it looks like I'm painting something else, then please remind me of my focus. One thing at a time...

Its funny how a lot of folk think that, but its really not.
A solid base coat and some careful drybrushing works wonders.
At the scale, you cna get away with a few things that would look awful at 28mm.

Really good start DM. I'm taking some inspiration to kick off my IG shortly...

Your company marking looks fine to me. If in doubt, use much thinner paint and apply in multiple layers. If you aren't happy with the central symbol, simplify it or leave it off altogether.

Are you flagging just the command tanks or all of them? If so it might be tricky to avoid that "May day parade" look. Then again the Vossies look pretty splendid in bright red so they aren't going to be hiding away from the enemy.

PS Small flyers are Thunderbolts, large ones are Marauders.

dancingmonkey

Thankyou sir... damn my old brain. It lets me down time and again. Not like I don't have a huge stack of books to look through to remind me... just lazy.

Anyway, I'm actually going to start the bombards now. Just finished the next article for Firebase, so can kill a few hours before I have to go meet the missus...

Piccies tonight I hope!

And yes, I may go for small pennants on every tank. Its the only way I can see me getting squad markings in there.. tiny little epic men sadly don't have room for the symbol!

Who needs camo and hiding in the shadows when you have a shiny red coat, furry hat and faith in the Emperor!

Can I get a mod to move this to the Sci Fi section please? I'm going to convert it to only Epic stuff, and feel it should be there instead. Cheers in advance.

Ok, update time...
Sadly, Future Publishing decided I was no good to them, so to drown my sorrows I decided to work on my Epic army instead.

Sooo, here is what I have done up to date...

First up a group shot of the first 1000pts all assembled:http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Theboys.jpg

Next up, I managed to sculpt 4 bases before my green stuff dried out and my retinas started to burn...http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Gang.jpg

Close up on new stand:http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Lemmings.jpg

dancingmonkey
30-04-2008, 17:52
Next up, big guns. The whole reason to play guard. As opposed to titans, the reason to play Epic... they will come later

Sooo, here is the first Artillery section... there will be nine of these bad boys soon enough... Not bad models and good in game. I might try for some mini dioramas on the next three, as inspired by my collegues in the epic section. Might use a couple of the loaders from the infantry stand, don't know if they should be on the base or the tank... will have to do some sandbags and barbed wire stuff as well in the long run.http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/takeaim.jpg

Here they are from the front, not what a commander wants to see opening up on his troops!http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/Boom.jpg

Finally, my tanks try to infiltrate a squat base by disguising themselves as a land train...http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/cptmcmeaty/landtrain.jpg

Hope you like what's done. Tomorrow will be the two stands and their Chimeras. Plus some more lemming sculpts...

although I try to avoid ink at epic scale (and mostly in general now) as I don't like the shiny effect that occours. It kills the scale a bit I find.

Those Bombards look great, very neatly done.

You kill the shiny effect with a light dusting of matt varnish (e.g purity seal). Several light coats for good protection.

Really? Where is this snippet of fluff I missed...
My plan was to have each tank platoon with diff markings.
My Russes are getting the red white red treatment, support (griffons and H.Hounds) will be green and so on... if this is wrong please advise!

I assumed it was pretty open based on the books. I've seen all sorts of tank markings in WD over the years, so just made it up, but I like being fluffy so forgive my ignorance...
