I am creating a sallies army and don't know whether to paint them dark skinned or white.

They are generally considered to be dark skinned. They recruit only from their homeworld and the more recent sketches of them give them african features in many ways. There was a time when their skin was described as black and their eyes were a glowing red...they could see in the dark since they had infravision. That was back in RT days though.

I'd go with a mix really, although keeping a darker skinned overall scheme would work well. That's one way to do it.

In the end, go with what you like.

All Marines once had the ability to see in the dark. Some have lost this ability over time... Salamander banners were once entirely made of infrared materials, appearing blank to those unable to se into the infrared spectrum.

Salamanders have traditionally had a significant percentage of their members with darker skin, although they have had members with lighter skin as well.

The Salamanders artwork in the Index Astartes shows a very dark, almost black African styled skin. Bald heads (though this doesn't mean much considering a lot of Marines have no hair, or shaved it off) and very African facial features. Wouldn't be out of place if you painted them such.

Tu'shan (Current Salamanders Chapter Master) is black.

I certainly hope so because that's how I painted him:

Of course, Codex: Armageddon has the one Salamander with skin showing as white

I think dark/black skin with red eyes would be bloody intense.

Here's a site that can help you with skin tones:

Well if he was white, say he was fighting on a desert world and his melanchrome pigment gland thingy was stuffing up....

Nerdy information always saves the day.

Very few Chapters have all implants and such fully functioning after all these years. Knowledge has been lost, geneseed corrupted and debased all leading to flaws and decreased abilities.

I'm sure Tu'Shan was pictured as white in the Armageddon codex, the small drawing next to his entry is almost definitely not black. Oh well, 40K continuity strikes again :D

Maybe they had to photoshop in a token white guy to show the ethnic diversity of the Space Marines?? :)
