I know people must be getting mighty sick of Pre-Heresy discussion nowadays, but I've got just a couple of quick questions that I haven't seen answered anywhere properly, and was hoping for concrete answers.
My own Pre-Heresy Ultramarine army is getting mighty large now (3K+) and I wanted to add some more flavour to it, but need to be accurate with the colour schemes, y'see!

Basically, did the Legion specialists, such as Chaplains, Techmarines and Librarians, wear their respective Legion colours, or the colours we are all familier with (Black, red and blue respectively)?

The only evidence I have to go on is a couple of pictures of Ultramarine Techmarines, who wear blue instead of red, but I was wondering if anyone had anything better than that... the artbooks can be unreliable at times...

Cheers in advance!

I think the specialist colours were already in use pre- and during the Heresy.

The fluff piece on the original Emperors Champion has got the Chaplain explaining to Sigismund (later to become the First Chapter Master for the Black Templars at the 2nd Founding) that his (yellow) Imperial Fist armour is now repainted black like the chaplains to show that he answers directly to the Emperor now.

Since their function and training was the same, Techmarines would then as now re-paint their armour red to show their alligience to the Tech-Priests of Mars as well as their Legion/later Chapter.

Librarians... Hmm... that I don't think there is any word on, really... While it could be useful for friendlies to be able to identify the guy playing around with dangerous psychic forces before he messes up and sucks everyone nearby into a vortex, it could well be something established later.

Most of the added colours were placed in use by Guilliman. Being the ass he was, he thought everything should have distinctive markings. Since you have an UM force, you'd best follow the Codex colours.

Chaplains have always worn black, as it is the Emperor's colour (which suggests they answer directly to the Emperor, no one else)

Librarians are meant to wear blue, and have always done so which works in well since the Ultramarines are....ultramarine blue...:D

Techmarines have always worn red on their armour, apart from the walking contradiction that is the Ultramarines Techmarine in the Sabretooth art books (who looks like a walking steam engine with a bolter...)

what makes you say black is the emperor's color?

I don't know about pre-heresy librarians, but tech marines have definitely always worn red, as a tip of the hat to adeptus mechanicus and mars.

You shouldn't have librarians and chaplains in the same pre-heresy army. In the latest fluff (HH series, collected visions) the chaplains and librarians were never around att the same time. At the council of Nikea the legions were ordered to disband their librarians and have chaplains to make sure there were no librarians.
