View Full Version : Starship troopers - The beginning of the Skinnie Hegemony!

01-05-2008, 15:51
Well, finally managed to gather up most of the available miniatures from around the world (they are now OOP) and made a start on the Skinnies!

Got to be honest I really can't see why people slatered the figs and they didnt sell well, they are really really good! Much taller than the standard trooper or space marine they are quite a chunk of metal too. I aim to convert a heavy attack bike and convert a couple of the Eldar walkers into the Skinnie equiv of the Trooper Ape walkers. Made a concious descision to stay away from metallics for the weapons to look as different from the MI as possible, will update as I wade through them...enjoy

Mobile Infantry and Arachnids can be seen here http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/futeristicminiatures.htm

Haven't seen many Starship trooper logs. Bonus points for doing something different. Oh, and the paintjob is rockin'!

01-05-2008, 16:30
Nice to see something a little different, and with a great paint job too.

01-05-2008, 22:23

I bought a stack of skinnies when my local store reduced them by 75% but have only ever got round to painting a guard.

I painted up some MI and bugs though and really enjoyed it, the rules look great and its such a pity that mongoose dropped the ball so badly.

06-05-2008, 18:19

Are you doing the Warchief?

06-05-2008, 20:08
Hi Sleazy, yes I will be doing the warchief too, also planning on a unit of tawn riders (basically just the chiefs and brutes with a little snipping here and there)

Been in touch with the chap who can supply me with the OOP figures too such as the Brutes, heavy speeders and Venerable walkers, got to wait until the end of May though so just twiddling my thumbs right now.....

06-05-2008, 22:51
venerable walkers? were they ever officially released?

there was lotsa unreleased stuff on ebay recently like the Forth. Mongoose were selling the skyhook as a resin kit too but it was way overpriced, did you get one?

07-05-2008, 07:44
I don't think the walkers were officially released Sleazy but I have been in touch with the chap who bought the molds from mongoose.

I can pass you his email if you like, more pre-orders he gets for this stuff, quicker he gets round to making them and quicker I get mine!!!

Agree with the price of the resin Skyhook, crazy beyond belief for a brick with wings, I snagged a galoob toy skyhook and viking from ebay for around 25 quid combined and splashed a little paint over 'em ;)

07-05-2008, 07:47
fantastic stuff

16-05-2008, 14:05
Havent had much time to get the brush out lately but managed to knock up a few skinnie militia (oooer)

Want to know more?....http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/home.htm

16-05-2008, 18:19
you paint very quickly for such a high standard. The militia arent the best sculpts though are they?

I'll have to keep a look out for those jaloob toys

16-05-2008, 18:46

check out this dude

stacks of new SST at bargain prices, I just picked some up

20-05-2008, 14:17
Moving up a gear as I want to try and get these skinnies out the way by the end of the month, when the rest of the skinnie figures show up along with the FW titan.

Anyhow, last couple of days knocked out these Tawn riders, only one model available, the chieftain, so I had to do a little snipping and convert the lances into power glaives, little bit of twisting here n there to re-pose a few of the Tawns and riders. the Glaives are a bit like hockey sticks as shown in the first pics (think Tusken raider), in fact a lot like hockey sticks so from this point forward they shall be know as St Skinnians senior hockey team!

Also pimped up the chieftains power lance too, just so he stands out a little..

LOL typical Sleazy, AFTER I buy em all they drop the bloody prices!

21-05-2008, 15:44
painted a few more Militia last night, these are from the original metal box set, again, not everybodies cup of tea but I love 'em!

22-05-2008, 08:25
they do have a sorta cheesy 50s sci-fi appeal dont they?

I ordered some stuff from that guy I linked too, I have most of the Skinnie units now, though I guess not as many as you.

Spent much of yesterday painting the plasma bug, had to base it in the end as it is so unbalanced, huge though!

So is there anything SST you are still looking for or do you have it all now Bulldog?

22-05-2008, 08:39
nice to see a SST log, well painted too

22-05-2008, 09:33
Nice SST log. I've just picked up a swag of MI troopers (veteran cap troopers, the roughnecks and some pathfinders with doggies) that I'm planning to use as "Storm Troopers" for my =]I[= Daemonhunters (they join minis from other 'dead' systems, like kryomek, in my collection).

22-05-2008, 18:10
are they not a tad tall Chromedog?

that fella I linked too has reduced then again....mustn't...buy....more..

25-05-2008, 10:22
These are the plastic raider sets, 16 per pack. These are super speed painted even by my standards!

Not sure if I want to add the plastic visors, think it may take off some of the contrast between all that green and blue flesh tones, check out the last pic, what ya think?

Sleazy, got just about everything for all 3 armies now, just about to paint up some skinnie cabals.

I have been in touch with a chap who bought the old molds from Mongoose and he can actually make the heavy speeders, walkers and brutes along with a few other things. If your interested have a chat with Mike at http://www.stronghold-miniatures.co.uk/

The More pre-orders he gets quicker he will make some! I have pre-ordered a couple of heavy speeders, light speeders, walkers and a bunch of Brutes

25-05-2008, 11:11
leave the visors off, looks much better.

I have emailed that fella, will see what he can offer.

I went and ordered 5 chieftains, I gotta try making my own hockey team! That ebay guy had everything I ordered delivered the next day by business post, I'm impressed! I have been puting together another Bigfoot today and some Ripplers - how nice are the Rippler sculpts?

Keep it up BulldogUK, this thread has reignited my love of SST and is inspiring me to actually put paint to mini.

25-05-2008, 13:00
deffinatly leave the visors off they look way better with out them !!!

25-05-2008, 16:16
Cheers fellas, visors retired to bits box ;)

Couldnt agree more Sleazy, that ebay seller was 5 star, cabal and bug zapping fence arrived next day too.

hehe, glad I can inspire, am I the only one who thinks the whole range of SST figs were vastly under-rated? On the table top they blow asthetic chunks out of most things I have seen!

Sleazy, might be worth waiting to see the brutes Mike has to offer, my original plan was to convert them into Tawn riders but I am just impatient and couldnt wait  They looked like little work would be needed to sit them on the back of the lizards

I was particularly fond of those ripplers too, was dissapointed when I ran out of bits to build more!

Probably keep my eyes open for a another cheap bigfoot and a couple of plasma bugs so I can run some interesting scenarios for both the tabletop and RPG

25-05-2008, 18:56
Fantastic stuff youve got here. They look really great!

Have you only started on the skinnies or do you have alot of the bugs and MI done as well?

I used to have alot of starship troopers stuff myself but I got rid of it just before they decided to shelve it and release the modern warfare game.

25-05-2008, 22:45
Thanks Struth, sigh if only it where true and I could create gold from nothing, I would now be sat on my own island painting only miniatures cleaned on the thighs of supermodels......

Shaw, I have painted everything in both the Arachnid and MI armies

Bugs can be seen here http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/Starship%20Troopers%20Arachnid%20Empire.htm

MI here http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/Starship%20Troopers.htm

25-05-2008, 23:33
You know, those vehicles from the previous page are quite cool- they look like drop ships. The Skinnie cavalry is quite impressive too (not keen on the non-portable cattleprod-weapon-type-thing though). Excellent painting skills.

25-05-2008, 23:43
BulldogUk, you are making me think about start with this game...

26-05-2008, 08:56
I agree Bulldog, I dont know why they get such bad press. The Skinnies are MEANT to look retro. The only poor mini in the bug range is probably the firefry. The MI have loads of gorgeous minis but the cougars and ape/bigfoot are probably my favorites.

That ebay guy was selling Bigfoots and Plasmas but I guess they're all gone - hardly surprising at that price.

If you fancy some SST Gonfrask, check out that link on the prev page, you could get a box of minis for 4 and see what you think. You should also be able ro pick up the boxed game on ebay for about 20 which I heartily recommend.

I just looked at your links there BulldogUK, I love the airbrushed warriors.

ps, Mike has replied, wow the Skinnie Marauder suit looks great!

26-05-2008, 18:42
Thanks for the links. Im sure I saw some of that stuff before on the mongoose website. Did you make some jetbikes as well?

27-05-2008, 17:08
Painted these fellas up yesterday, the Skinnie Cabal is the pyschic punch of the army. They operate a little like prunes, the more you use the more dangerous they become!

I agree sleazy, retro is the very word I was looking for and yes are those Grizzly and gougar suits ever the coolest thing you have seen!

The special op guys are fantastic too

Another thing I like about this game is how the 3 main army lists differ so much, reading through the Skinnie army list it just 'feels' like a totally alien race your building as well as looking the part. Rules don't just seem to be transplanted over to even things out in a generic way

yeah, those skinnie walkers are well out of the box too aren't they Sleazy, can't wait to get my hands on em :)

Shaw, yes I have a couple of the light speeder bikes to do, decided to wait until I get the heavies from mike and paint them all together, saves a little time!

Gonfrask, you wont go wrong, it plays like an absolute dream, grab everything ASAP, things are becoming very hard to get hold of now

30-06-2008, 21:51
Got the new gear the other day. painted these bikes up over the weekend. Again they maintain that freaky retro look which I so much love about these minis. Hopefully should paint up the two walkers tomorrow

rest of the Starship trooper minis can be checked out here WANT TO KNOW MORE?... (http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/Starship%20Troopers%20Skinnie%20Hegemony.htm)

You are an AMAZING painter! How did you do the white on the Lord and the green cape on the Tyrant?

01-07-2008, 18:01
Just finished the walkers, tried to stick to the venerable purple colour scheme. totally weird funky stuff!

02-07-2008, 01:45
Bulldog, your work is an absolute inspiration. I was checking your website - your Tyranids and Eldar are just about my favourite citadel miniatures ever. I started collecting in 1994 with the release of second edition 40k - your style of painting brings back memories of what I consider the best days of the hobby. My best regards - thanks so much for your posts and your website.

08-07-2008, 08:04
Thanks for the compliments Arsenal, last copy of 40K I owned was 2nd edition too! I figured it was about time I updated so I have 5th on order!

Anyhow, back to the Skinnies!

Zulus, thaaaaasands of 'em!

Brutes are the erm, well, brutes of the Skinnie army, tough shock troops armed with big sticks and bad attitude...the football hooligans of the Hegemony

Just the slaves to paint now and they are all done, woohoo!

09-07-2008, 05:59
your painting is wondeful. how did you do the purple on the walkers its amazing.

10-07-2008, 21:00
oh THATS what the brutes look like. Reckon I'll order some of those for my riders.
