View Full Version : 2 guys, 2 days, 2 superheavies...

Here's the plan... a friend and I are going to slog it out this weekend, and try and turn some foamboard, a big pile of balsa wood, some pringles tubes, and various plumbing paraphernalia into a couple of suitably apocalyptic warmachines. I'm going to try to update this thread every couple of hours or so, so any suggestions as we go along would be great!

I'm going to be working on a stompa, and Glen (screen name Gonders) will be bashing together a plague tower. Hopefully.

Anyway, as seems compulsory when starting such a project, here's the raw materials:

And this is the amount of pringles you get in 8 tubes, apparently. We've dubbed it 'mount pringle', and it will be providing snacks over the weekend.

pringel fueled scratchbuilding marathon,

ill be watching this closely,

good building young ones!

02-05-2008, 18:11
That'll be one tasty mountain! Wil be watching this.

02-05-2008, 19:22
ok, first update.

So far, the plague tower is looking like this:

Taking shape from the bottom up... Apparently the chassis should be finished tonight, then the tower bit should get started tomorrow.

And the stompa, which i should point out, is not going to be a 'conventional' stompa...

On the plus side, I bought three sheets of foamboard, but have only used one. Which means i could potentially build three stompas...

On the downside, i now have to cut all of that stuff out. Bleh.

As an aside, I feel slightly sick from eating too many pringles. Will update in a couple of hours.

02-05-2008, 19:29
wow looking nice mate,

keep up the good work!

and hand over the pringels! :D

looking forward to the next update

02-05-2008, 20:19
i think i'll be watching this,good luck guys :D

02-05-2008, 21:22
ok, think we're done for tonight, here's where we're up to.

the plague tower looks a bit like this:

Note the missionary for scale. And, by the end of the weekend, it should look like this:

The stompa is all cut out, and is in numerous pieces on the floor. Which means I'm at the stage I was planning on being at by tomorrow night now. Anyway, going to buy some glue tomorrow and get sticking it together, when it's finished, I'm hoping it will look a bit more dynamically posed version of this:

That's assuming all of the pieces fit together, which they almost certainly won't. That's us done for the night anyway, will get the ball rolling again some time tomorrow morning.

02-05-2008, 22:38
Very interesting project. I'm especially interested how the Plague tower will come out. Plague towers in 40k seems to be the very epidome of "centerpiece".:)

03-05-2008, 05:52
Looking good so far, keep it up.

03-05-2008, 08:14
keep it goin!

and that plague tower will look huge!

looking forward to the next updates

03-05-2008, 11:26
Good start, keep it going!

03-05-2008, 11:39
Mount pringle!!

03-05-2008, 11:50
Cheers for all the support =D

ok, start of the morning, the stompa looked like this:

Stuck a bit of it together, its gone surprisingly well. A couple of parts a slightly the wrong size, but nothing a bit of trimming or filling won't fix. This is how it looks at the moment:

As for the plague tower, the wheels have had treads added and are now glued in place. And the rough outlines of the tower are stuck together:

And as for mount pringle, we've had a fair crack at it, but it's starting to go a bit stale:

Hoping to post another update in an hour or two, hopefully all the parts of the stompa will be stuck together, and I'll have a sore arm from hacking up pipes. Fingers crossed, the 'tower' part of the plague tower will be stuck together. Pics to follow =D

03-05-2008, 14:53
Time for an update...

The plague tower is looking a lot taller now, the tower bit is on top, and Glen is half way through the arduous task of cutting wood grain effects into the side of it.

Here it is looking kinda like a dolls house:

And with the other side glued on:

Stompa is looking a lot less like a pile of foamboard and a lot more like a stompa, it's upside-down at the moment while the legs dry, and while i think of how to go about making a supa-lifta-droppa. I just kinda drew a scaled up shokk attak gun on the concept pic, without thinking about how to actually make it. Suggestions would be great!

Here's how it's going, anyway:

Next couple of hours should bring some detail on the plague tower, hopefully some little 'huts' on the sides, and some more gunz and exhausts on the stompa.

03-05-2008, 17:35
more guns!!! indeed alot more guns on the stompa!! hehehehe

and to make the lifta-droppa, wel the good thing abour ork teknologi is that you can glue about anything you can lay your hands on together and if its impresive enough you can call it anything youd like :D

and that plague tower just keeps growing and growing, that thing looks huge!

03-05-2008, 17:58
Ok, last post for the day.

Cheers for the advice. Stompa is going well, all assembled, and got some more gunz on it. Also managed to bodge together a soopa lifta droppa. Also, the thing under the right foot is just proping it up for now, there will be some sort of scenic base bit there when it's done. It's wprthing noting that the bits of pipe on top of the arms will have orks with big shootas in them, when i get round to it.

Plague tower is going good also, most of the structure is done, and it has some crazy pipework to boot. And a pretty nifty mortar.

Tomorrow, I'm mostly going to be putting loads of armour plates and banding all over it, and Glen is going to be sculpting a massive daemonic face over the front of the tower.

03-05-2008, 18:14
These 2 are looking great. Looking forward to more.

03-05-2008, 19:08
Nice- are you going to use any greenstuff on the tower?

Yarick Zan
03-05-2008, 19:11
Man this looks awesome.

03-05-2008, 19:31
Whooow
You guys are an inspiration!
If you pull this one off by tomorrow evening you can count on a lot of free cookies (or should that be pringles :D)
I can't even finish a tyranid warrior on a weekend

Asmodeus' Swordhand
03-05-2008, 19:37
will there be a lovely pus reservoir?

03-05-2008, 20:21
Quite simply awesome. Looking forward to seeing these engines of destruction all finished.

03-05-2008, 20:29
"You can do it, all night long!"

Looking great! This is quite amazing, but that much of Pringles isn't going to taste so good tomorrow(seriously, 8 tubes?).

04-05-2008, 10:37
Hi all, cheers for the comments. Sorry updates have been a bit slow, we were out last night, and are getting back at it now, despite being slightly hungover.

Plague tower will indeed be getting some pus tanks, and lots of modeling clay on the front for the faces, probably near the end of the day. Stompa will just be getting lots and lots of armour plates. Will update with pics in an hour or 2.

04-05-2008, 14:05
Wooh, update =D

Turns out we're a bit too tired and lazy to work hard, so not a lot has been done. Plague tower is now sporting a pair of demolisher cannons, and has more huts and pipes and stuff on the sides:

And now glen is knee-deeps in modeling clay working on a big daemnic face, and it kinda smells like a primary school art classroom in here.

I've been sticking armour plates on the stompa to cover up the messy foamboard bits, which is both time consuming and dull. And the left arm just WON'T STAY ON AND IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!

04-05-2008, 14:43
AWESOME. Keep it going! I am painting my army too today, nice to know others are working on thiers too...

Do you plan to get it undercoated today?

04-05-2008, 16:04
hey guys 8-) cant wait to see it finished! lol, ill come round tomorow for a super heavy building day - we might be able to get that arm sorted eh tom! lol........good stuff

04-05-2008, 17:42
you should put a bottom to on the jaw of the gargant, then you can have boyz or grotz shoot out of it like a crows nest.

04-05-2008, 18:18
hey i have a mate that is trying to build a stompa, and he is so impressed by yours he was wondering if you could give him the measurements that you drew on the foamboard

hed really apreciate it,

and keep it going! youre almost there, and if all else fails you might try epoxy to glue that rebelious arm in place?

04-05-2008, 18:21
An update from me, for a change! A sneak peek at the plague tower's wonderfully deamonic features :-)

Been messing around with clay for an hour or two now... still abit more to add, probably bottom teeth, and some chaos runs carved in.

Any suggestions welcome.

After that I need to get some crew for those cannons. Iam trying to stay away from the Possessed look, as the tower is actually the centre piece of a traitor guard army. Aiming to look like something they've cobbled together themselves. Especially as the apoc data sheet doesnt have any evidence of possessed rules.

Still got alot to go at yet, but We're extending the project into bank holiday monday! hurrah!

So no plans to undercoat till next weekend I dont think.

Thanks for all the replies so far too :-)

04-05-2008, 20:28
Fantastic progress!!! that Ork Stompa is great, and original, bit like a supa dread!.
Hope to see it painted soon!

Bugbait out

04-05-2008, 21:17
Cheers for the comments all.

Didn't get much done today, apparently making a super heavy in 2 days is quite a challenge! However, we realised today that tomorrow is a bank holiday, so this might become "2 guys, 3 days, 2 superheavies". Which I think is still quite a feat!

Only problem is, the face has been sculpted on the plague tower today, so probably won't be dry enough to be painted for a few days. Although it is looking mighty fine. Stompa on the other hand, may well be finished and undercoated by tomorrow, if Glen lets me make a mess in his room for the third day in a row, that is...

And nice to know someone else would like a crack at the stompa! You can probably see that the net I was working from was pretty nuts, and also had a few 'minor adjustments' on the way (if you look carefully, one of the feet says 'neck' on it... like I said, minor adjustments...) But I'll try my best to get some sorted for you. Also, the raw materials cost less than a fiver!

05-05-2008, 13:46

thanks! thatll help my mate out tremendously, as he is both low on cash and raw materials (hes a student, figures... ;) )

and iam really curious to see whats happened on this free 3rd day, its like a bonus, come to see 2 days, get a third one for free!

good luck with it all!

05-05-2008, 14:03
a bunch of hunchbacked mutants lead by slaver humans would look appropriate, you could use ork, skaven, zombie, human sets mix and match and load them up don't forget ammo though unless its a hell fire like thing that is fired. Can I suggest a spotters nest/tower sticking out side/top?

05-05-2008, 15:19
Ok, one of the last construction updates, both models nearing completion now :-)

The plague tower is having details added:

Just got bottom teeth to make really, and a few more final touches. And crew also need making to fit in with the rest of my traitors.

The stompa is almost done too:

Just needs crew added aswell and a coat of roughcoat before painting can

We'll post pictures after painting is done I'd imagine.

C&C welcome

splendid work,
shinigami already asked it for me but i thought it would be nicer to ask myself fo the mesurments of the gargant:angel:

btw first post;)

06-05-2008, 07:14
Wow both projects are wicked I love the stompa, very inspirational (or is it coz I is green) Very Neat well planed, something I have difficulty doing I just seem to cobble stuff together. I look forward to seeing some more pictures

06-05-2008, 21:14
I saw this over the weekend and have been impressed by the garant and plague tower, especially the clay moulded face!

Please keep this project updated!

07-05-2008, 00:44
That face on the pus tower is impressive. Great sculpting work. I also love how top heavy that Stompa looks. Very brutal

Anxiously awaiting the painting of these two. And then some tabletop action!

07-05-2008, 12:26
hows it going?

07-05-2008, 12:34
An excellent idea, well executed. I wish SWMBO would let me do an all-nighter one day. They had an all-night paintathon at our local GW the other week, but, alas, I am still expected to be on child-care duties 24/7.

Still, as she's the one earning all the money, I don't suppose I have much of a choice...

07-05-2008, 12:42
The stompa is looking very tasty. My only concern is I can't see any rivets!
Surely you will rivit up beofre painting? It will only take... oooh... about a week to rivit this bad boy up to true orky style!

Its the only way orks can hold something together, bang a few more nails in there... dress pins are good and pretty cheap, or you cna use plastic rod and damn your sanity!

Looking forward to seeing the painted jobs.

07-05-2008, 13:28
Junkyard Wars 40k.

This is so.. hot.

07-05-2008, 17:01
Thank you all for the replies!!

The clay face now has bottom teeth, and I found a large forge world symbol for the back of the tower :-) Just need to add some more rot and corruption, and Iam ready to paint. oh, And still not tackled the crew problem.

I'm going to need an extra can of spray to get the behemoth undercoated though, so I think this weekend, painting shall begin!!!

I'm not sure if Tom has any plans to rivet the stompa up. I wouldnt fancy taking on that task with the english weather being so nice at the minute!

excellent models guys. totally huge.
great concept for the stompa good to see some different ideas.
love the plague tower. its awesome can't wait to se the finished product. totally inspirational will have to kick back into the daemonics this summer.

07-05-2008, 21:02
why wouln't the orc's weld intead of rivet the beutifull beat?

then the burna's would finely be good for something lse then lighting up random stuff

08-05-2008, 06:53
Wot's wrong wiv lightin' up random stuff? Sounds good to me! Rivets is orky!

08-05-2008, 11:22
That plague tower is the single most disturbing thing I have ever seen built. Really looking forward to seeing it painted and completed!

08-05-2008, 11:56
Looking great,

add rivets as other have noted, makes things look more orky!

The plauge tower looks like it could do with alittle more technology on it somehow... currently looks very WHFB esk.. not that thats a bad thing, it just looks slightly odd

also, is that air drying clay you used? or something else? also, where did you get it from and ofr how much?

08-05-2008, 21:48
Hey, sorry, still no proper update yet, been working all week and various other bit and bobs have got in the way. Promise of much activity over the weekend!

Yeah, the face is made of air drying clay. It called 'DAS', its Italian. Tom picked it up from his student shop in uni(he's a graphic design student) and it cost me around a fiver for a fair size block. Ive used about a third of it to get this far.

Maybe check out a shop like 'the range' or any other art supply shop.

Also, yeah I wanted the tower to look a bit like it'd fit in with WHFB. Helps reinforce the weirdness of the daemonic in 40k universe, I feel. Obviously it'd be weird to drive a wooden siege tower at a bunch of entrenched field guns, but thats chaos for you!!

Ive just noticed theres the silhouette of half a traitor armored company on the window ledge behind me in the reflection of the TV in the last shot of the plague tower... That wasn't intentional!

08-05-2008, 23:26
loving this project.

dont know how you plan to base the stompa but i think making the front foot flat to the ground would make it look alot better. more stable in some way.

the face on the tower is ssawwweeettt. one small gripe thought... the wood looks far too clean, no wear or tear, no chipping. i thought that wood + nurgle = rotting wood. maybe some damage would be appropriate?

thank you.
