I'm pretty lazy. My first blog on terrain spurred me on and is becoming quite enjoyable, it keeps me in check.

My terrain board is a battlefield (literally: mud, rain, wrecks and defence-lines)
http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139379

To go with it I want some Trench Guard. Unashamedly they’re based on the great conversions done with the Brettonian and Cadian parts.

Here’s a few quick posts I did with examples on the subject of scale:
http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139128

So: to start off her are some test examples I’ve done. I consider this first pass a failure. Firstly, I went in with no real plan or design. The chest plate thing is far too big, I therefore only worked up one of them to the next level of detail. Again, I’m not sure the shoulder pad is going to bulk the shoulders up to much.
The scale is 25mm ‘heroic’ I’d say.

Regardless this is the start of the process. I’ll be putting together another batch (probably 3) based on the design I’ve drawn up. These are going to be hand cast eventually so there are limitations on the overall shape (I’ll describe more in detail as I go along).

Here's my first pass at a greatcoat. Left is 25mm 'true scale' (standing straight). Right is 25mm 'heroic' (striding forward, appears shorter).

Wow, wonderful work there, it's sad you have no support as it seems!

I especially love the concept of the first trench raider, it's very stylish.

And I cannot but admire the shakos, being a Vostroyan at heart!

Great sketches and GSing. Really you have talent. What colors are you going for? Earthly browns/blacks?

have you not thought of tryng to get hold of the old warzone plastics and modifying them, they had trench style gear and backpacks with shovels etc

Thanks for the comments, these are pretty crappy by any standard I rushed through them. Also a trick for anyone, i have a few 'masters' I've made up (faces, bare torsos). I made imprints of them so when you do quick studies you can simply blob on GS for the head then use the imprint for an instant face. If you’re inexperienced with GS I'd even recommend that trick with mini's you've bought! Instant and easy moulds.

Greatcoats will be red eventually with black fur hats. Probably muted green/khaki and brown for the trench guys.

Since these 3 have been ditched I might revisit them and work them up into Mechanicus Explorators or something.

I'm not interested in converting anything I'd trying to put these together from scratch.

My sculpting has fallen by the wayside as of late, to warm up I'm doing a few 'muties' for Lost and the Damned. Here's the first, think i'll leave the arms bare and outstreached; when I get round the eventually casting them I can simply bend the arms into place and make a few variants.

Boots and a few other fine detals need worked on(hands, teeth, eyes, warts, here's a mutie in rags:

I seem to be doing lots of robed legs at the moment, chaos cultists I reckon... or maybe mechanicus creeps. Torsos will also be robed and I'm working on a bare torso that will become a quick mold. Few more pics, that vampire was sculpted about a year ago (face and empty hand need chopped off and redone).

very cool work I like the ideas, is the whold collection going to be primarilly sculpted?

IceSword
24-06-2008, 17:02
Yeah probably about 90% will be sculpted - not individually though, I've some experience in hand casting and you can get good starter 'packs' these days for making moulds for casting with white metal.

If you look at GW sprues you only really need to sculpt 4 or 5 legs, torso, heads, arms and you make armies of hundreds from that ! I'm making an effort to leave the waists clean/flat so I can easily saw it for repositioning. Same with the heads. Arms are a bit different but I'll have examples soon.

Current projects are the Trenchers, Greatcoats, Traitor Guard, Muties and the Cultists. I want to do some Catachans too. I'm only aiming for armies of 30 - 40 of each, I'd go mad doing more. This is a long term project if you hadn't guessed already hehe.

Dictator

Great sculpting skills.
You say you are doing catachan's, how will you differentiate yours from the GW ones?

IceSword
24-06-2008, 17:38
Different scale, I like seeing humans 25mm against 28mm marines. I'd like to see them a bit more ragged and with more pouches, grenades and gear. Probably a bit more 'vietnam' meets the squad from the first predator film. Female warriors go without saying too.

IceSword

Sculpting is slow and tedious, I need more corks to get a big production line going. Good excuse for more wine...

This evenings work, right is going to be a hunchback mutie covered in rags, left is going to be a 'big guy' for the cultists (heavy weapon carrier) and middle is the armature for my traitor test.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_2099.jpg

Here's a photo of my torso mould and the original sculpt. To cheat i just press a blob on GS into this and then work it up on the armature. It's bulky because when your pulling and working the GS into shape round the sides mass will be lost.

IceSword

More work on the muties. The one on the right will have separate arms and head (head will be sculpted on its own, chubby with boils and a slavering tongue). These are practice, I really need to nail a single design and pose and work from that for reference instead of winging it like this.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_2102.jpg

Finished the hands for this mutie, finished the whole thing actually. Probably won't cast this as I'm not to happy with it. The pose isn't doing anything... on the other hand he might make a good plague zombie.

The arm under the mutated hunchback is going to be small and weak, possibly curled up onto the main body.

I think i'll add a little sling around the dodgy arm so it looks like it's held in place. Lights catching it in the photo but the arm looks better in life. That said it's still not perfect I still need a bit of practice.

Here's the first attempt at a head for this guy, I think the arms will be clutching a beat up rifle :

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_2159-1.jpg

Hugely oversized hunch on this one, there's a few veins running along the bulges but I'll need to work a few more finer ones when it's cured. I might add some straps to suggest he needs it to support his torso (hold it together). I think overall it might end up similar to the mutant from the Inquisitor range, Quovandius or whatever his name was :

Thanks for all the comments. I'm not that happy with these I'm hoping the next 4 will work better (since i'm working from a few sketches).

Right now I'm only aiming to cast up 30-40 for myself. Hive Trygon who posts on here has offered to cast and advertise them on his site so there's the possibility of that. Important thing for me is to make them easy to convert (clean straight waists for cutting, easy heads for slicing off etc), on top of making the sculpts top notch.

Long term I've sourced a local plastics firm, perhaps a round of golf with the top guys will give me the chance to pitch miniatures to them.

WIP on the next round of Mutants, bit more GW sprue style but not quite 28 heroic.

For anyone interested in starting sculpting a cork and wire is a must for mobility, stability and access to all the figure. Sculpting on a dolly super glued to a slot base is rubbish, it will always pop off the base.

This wire is just a paperclip bent into a single U shape, and bent to create a pose for the legs. once the lower waist is sculpted I cut the wire in half at the top then bend it down to form the armature for the arms.

some gorgeous sculpting fella :)

I was wondering, you use GS moulds in the first few posts on this log. Do you add something to the greenstuff going in to stop it simply sticking toghether, as that's a problem i've had, and I've made sure the cast is dry. Also, i can't get the detail you use. are their any hints or tricks you'd suggest?

thanks

IceSword
15-07-2008, 22:51
Cheers Floyd.

I use a little dish of water, rub your pinkie in the water then 'wet up' the mould before you press the GS in. It's actually really tricky to get the correct amount of lubricant but it just takes practice.

I hate to say it (because everyone says it) but just practice all the time. Tools are important, but I spent £30 on dentist tools and I only use two of them ! My first tool was a thread pick dress making thing a stole from my mum, over 10 years ago. There's no fast way to learn to sculpt, GS will be your worst enemy until you get used to it... from then on in though it only gets easier. Start small, sculpt flat then progres to 3D.

Really do wish I was a better teacher. Err, start small, work your way up, learn from your mistakes and be harsh with yourself. I've sculpted about 4 years and have some stinkers from the early days in my bitz box.

Great work, theres some pretty phenomical gs'ing goin on here, my only adivce would be experiment with layering the gs on your mini's.

What i mean, and forgive me if i'm wrong, your mini's look like they are one solid layer (i.e. the arm is made from the same layer as the cloth and wrist) and whilst this is a good approach, i personally as a GS' sculpter always find it robs some of the 3d quality of the miniature. thats all i'd day you lack with these, is that 3d feel you get out of mini's atm.

Other than that, great work icesword!

18-07-2008, 08:41
Not to disagree with G hawke but I actually like the way it looks as if it was scuplted from a single piece. While it does take that slight 3d edge away, your ability more then makes up for it. I personally can only work with the GS by layering. My hand isnt steady enough to do the work like you.

Keep it up!

Oh and they look insanley good all lined up like that.

The reason a couple (on in particular) look one piece is I was aiming directly for the one piece mould mini. A few other looks a bit more 3D but yeah, some are a bit static.

I've got one thing to say. You are so close to making perfect minis I can't help but offer you one piece of advice. Mind you I'm not the best but learning very fast now. Get some brown stuff for your armor and ammo type stuff. If you mix green stuff with it it's also great for tiny things like teeth. You get such nice ,clean, crisp work with GS brown stuff will be scary. ;) Also love the head on that mutant, might make veins slightly thinner but honestly they do not bother me much like they are.

Pointing hand to be replaced. Weapon sprue will have the whip, chunky rifle, knife (for the bandaged leg, or a hand) and an additional right hand clenched/holding a gun grip:

So many nice models. You're a really skilled sculptor! I wish I could do something that was even a third as good as these but I can barely make passable gap-fillings. Practice-practice-practice I guess...

Good to hear you will get the models casted up. Will be interesting to see a horde of them together. Keep up the good work :)

Glad to see some gears on those arms. Did you know some hobby shops sell different plastic and brass gears for scratchbooking. You can find them is you look around here in the USA at Michaels. Not sure what your equivalent would be. Also lock washers flatened out make fantastic gears if you plan to make loads of them. ;)

WIP chaos Imagifier, with design and text :

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_2679-1.jpg

Imagifiers
Floating inches above the earth, the nine feet tall skinny form of the imagifier glides etherealy amongst the traitor forces. Their militaristic uniforms; sweeping long black great coats breasted with vertical lines of shinning buttons, spiked winglets, high buttoned metal plated collars and long ornamented cuffs are a mocking parody of the uniforms worn by the Imperial Legion of Man. There tall boots go unseen under their wraith like floating coats.
Reaching out from the black sleeves come their impossibly long skeletal bare hands, wrinkled, pale and blue veined with sharp talons, they constantly spread and point towards their enemies and entice their followers forward into combat.
Most grotesque and disturbing of all, sitting atop a heavy collared skinny neck rests the hairless head of the imagifier. Their faces are heavily boned and skinny, with deep dark ringed piercing eyes, pointed noses and chins, high cheekbones and frighteningly large mouths displaying sharp yellow teeth and plenty of pink fleshy veined gums. Their sharp horrid gaunt faces contrast with their large semi bulbous craniums that betray their true power, for imagifiers are powerful pyskers able to turn even the bravest warrior into a quivering wreck, the merest glance causing men to fall into wretched foetal balls to weep and defecate themselves in terror and insanity.
Similarly, these powers of the mind are used by the imagifiers on their followers to bolster their manic morale and press them forward unto any foe. The same telekinetic power used to levitate their bodies is also used on attack where necessary, hurtling debris against enemies and throwing men aside with mere thought alone.

Those are bulking out nicely. Not sure how I feel about the genitals, always give me the yuck factor, but the miniatures are going to be ace I'm sure.

The tank is also looking good, how are we going to cast this thing? Is it several pieces? Might have to plug the cannon with something a half inch or so from the top and bottom to make it a solid casting. ;)

IceSword
24-08-2008, 17:17
haha, I want more yuk factor in the minis, wait till they're finished.

Yeah the barrell of the tank will be blocked about 6mm down. Could end up 6 parts, 2 tracks, 1 base, 1 barrell/breachs and 2 fairings. Each piece very flat for casting should be no problem.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_2673-1.jpg

Black Praetorians
Once mutiny has been proclaimed and allegiance to the chaos powers has been declared openly, the Imagifiers will show themselves at the head of the Black Praetorians. The organised militant force of rebellion, the Black Praetorians serve as an elite core well armed and disciplined and ready to make war. Black leather greatcoats, boots and gloves, Praetorians wield reliable rifles and grenades slung on a formal belt, a red band on the left arm denotes their ranking and regiment.
Covering the head of the praetorians in battle sits an iron all enclosing helmet spiked at the tip, two thin slits provide vision and one acts as a mouthpiece creating a faceless inhuman trooper striking fear into those civilians and militia they are sent to brutalise and round up when not engaged in conflict. Praetorians retain most of their sanity compared to cultists, this fact betrays their sadism and cruelty as they perform acts of holocaust and genocide on behalf of their daemonic commanders.

Troll Forged Mini webstore in the coming months. I'm looking forward to getting some of them myself hehe !

I've a rough sculpt schedule and a fair idea of what people are looking for (gaps in GW's range mostly, and anything else cool) but I'm open to suggestions. Greatcoat's are being worked on since everyone wants those (in plastic I might add, provided the plastic firm I'm in talks with can handle the scale/detail and I'm ready to part with a sizeable chunk of my savings to get the initial mould made).

Yeah everything will be getting cast and sold by Troll Forged Mini's over the coming months, infact I think the basic mutants are being cast up for me tomorror so as soon as I get some painted for the shop gallery they'll be on sale.

Coincidence you ask about robed legs, I have a few I'm going to be sending off for moulding in the near future. I'll try and pull some pics of them soon, they'd be ideal for making Skitarii or whatever they're called. I have a ton of bit and pieces I've made that would be good as conversion packs.

Not sure on the price, I think Troll Forged will need to look at things like how much resin goes into them, how tricky they are to cast, time it takes etc.etc.

I don't think they'll come with bases (so you can use whichever type you like, or just buy them from GW) so that might reduce the cost slightly.

4 months to xmas, plenty time to get them on the xmas gift rader.

Hello IceSword,
first off: This is really great. You GS skills are really awesome and I can't wait to see your figurines cast.
However, in your last post you have the image of the "big mutie#2" with the cable in its leg. I am pretty sure you allready know, but wanted to point out, that this creates a loop, which may cause problems in the molding/casting process, unless you have the mold-seperation-line right there.
Just to point out

IceSword
02-09-2008, 18:21
Cheers Klaus, yes when this comes out the inner 'gap' is going to have a thin layer of resin across it which will need to be broken/filed out (should be wafer thin though). The alternative is to have the wire loose, cast up separate and then glued on at the construction stage... but that's all pretty fiddley.

Thank's Dragadile, i'll take that as the kind of love a Marine gives their primarch and not the Slaanesh type.

Word from the Forge is the moulds are done for the mutant footsloggers so I should be getting 40 odd to start my LATD army soon. Hoo-rah.

Basic shape done on the Black Praetorian, once the arm on the right is cured I can take it apart, clean it all up and add the final details (buttons)... then just the helmet to tackle. Also, it's the trigger hand that's too small - not the other hand that's too big, they'll be sorted at the 'clean up' stage next anyway.

Thanks for the comments.

While I slowly do multipart guardsmen prototypes the next footslogger project is some Zombie troopers. Still toying with plans, not sure if I'll stick to my fatigue designs or make them more general.. probably both. Plan is for a good few gas masks (because they look cool) and torn clothing/bandages/rags blowing in the wind gently, hopefully give them a slightly ethereal feel. Design similar to the mutants, not multipart but made with appendage swapping in mind.

98% finished. These pics look rubbish. Still to detail the gun, add a helmet spike and tidy up everything with a knife.

Not like my sketch but if you notice that was stylised: this mini actually has the correct sized helmet, even if it looks slightly big (the neck needs trimmed so it will sit a LOT lower).

The angles on the helmet are very subtle and hard to pick up on camera, it will look good when cast and painted.

This is really a prototype, when I get multiples back from Troll Forged I can then refine the helmet more in hard resin and also make a lot more poses (I need multiples of the torso and waist to make sure they all match up in lovely multipart). This will come with a blank head along with the helmet incase anyone wants to convert these as loyalist troops.

Thanks folks. Might be a month before the Black Praetorian is cast up but I plan to make and paint 20 odd with this one pose alone, nice multipart. I can really see myself making some tank commander models and heavy weapons squads crouching too, on top of a few more regular poses.

Unfortunatley I like to work in order, mundane footsloggers before the special characters and such.

When I finally get them painted up they should show their worth.

Next Project: Animated War Corpses (Zombies)

Nothing exciting just the armatures: paper clips straightened and pierced into corks. I like these corks because they're the same size as the top flat of a GW slot base, so I can easily judge scale and how they'll look based and finished. There will be a production line so next is the legs for each, then boots, then torsos, then arms. Doing all the same feature's in the same sitting lets me keep them similar sizes and shapes for making them interchangeable.

My brief is they are essentially dead loyalist soldiers who have been reanimated from the battlefield, field morgue or mass grave. All will be empty handed (we all know real zombies just shamble, claw and bite).

Aiming for bandages and rags blowing in the wind, gas masks, brains, guts, bullet holes, and bones. Same as my mutants they'll be sculpted one piece but designed so they can be sliced up and turned into multi part mini's.

HiveTrygon
03-10-2008, 00:04
you know how I feel about them. I did just think of something though. Because you are sculpting on corks it limits the range of your pose. Did you notice how my old stuff was a little more limited in pose? I changed bu sculpting on my bases turned upside down. This allowed me 25mm of space where the corks were not that large. Just something that might help you. I looked at all the nicely done legs and this just stuck out to me. ;)

My plastic sprue project has been put back a few years I'm afraid. The local firm I was talking to couldn't handle the scale and detail, I'll need to look around a bit more. It's taking a lot of planning and will take a giant chunk out of my social life for a few months when it does happen.

Yes the bare torso isn't proportioned correctly, I did this all at once from one blob of green stuff (no additional layers). It's going to be covered in gear and the arms will come across the front slightly so I'm not too concerned with it. I'll be hiding the bad bits.

HiveTrygon
05-10-2008, 14:02
I don't think the torso looks that bad either, so when the arms are added it should look Ace.

*dodges shoe* were trying! :p :D

It's ashame about the sprue thing but me and you can manage this together and do the minis the same justice. I just got to get faster. I talked with my wife last night as well and after she has the baby I'm going to train her in casting and she is going to stay at home full time and help me with that.

Gonna be fantastic kits man. What I love most about you is the variety and numbers. I can set up deals which then allow me to cast them much, much faster that way. 5minis makes my life so much easier than 2 or 3 when it comes to casting these things up. I did one order tonight which took me a little while to do but will be able to do the next 3 fairly quick. Because they are my plagueminions 5 per group, and your mutants, 8 per group. ;)

As it stand I'm working on 6 zombies. Those four armature legs on the right are going to be multipart Trenchers, possibly, same set up as the black praetorian. I'll need to mail you trygon and work out whats best.

I suspect the Black Praetorian will be a pain to cast (but once I get copies I can convert and sculpt a LOT more, I need multiples to make sure the fittings and general waist size are consistent). I'll probably start on Greatcoats in a few days, the more I have on the go the quicker I'll get through them (more to do during curing time).

I think I'll have them all with you by early December.

Now the Zombie troopers are ready for sending to the forge I'm onto the next project: living versions.

Finally (after lots of tests sculpts that will never see the light of day) I feel i can tackle greatcoats. Reason it's taken me a while is I want to get a lot of movement into them which isnt easy when dealing with big coats, I dont want them flapping in the wind like the matrix but still want to have enough movement to make them look cool and jump out at you. These first four are going to be running and sort of ducking, dodging aside and making for cover. I'm thinking stalingrad: run and dive for cover.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_3100.jpg

These four will be trenchers, bit more static (they stand around in trenches and shoot) but again they have long'ish over coats so I'll be aiming for some movement on them.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_3101.jpg

Designs for the fatigues will be exactly the same as the zombies.

There is a timetable for these, since the Guard Codex comes out in April/May 09 I'm hoping to have these ( and a few other things guard related) posted off by xmas so Troll Forged has plenty of time to make the moulds. Personally I want to have casts for myself so I can put together a couple of platoons when the codex comes out.

First taste of the mechanicus type stuff, I'll be returning to them early next year and doing an entire range.

Wow Ice, you did a great job painting him. I'll admit I was a little afraid to try molding this guy, not sure if I could do it justice but so glad I went ahead anyway. :D

I need to get a better photo of the robo-arm, I can't believe you managed to cast it. I think I mentioned on your forum but it was a fantastic bit of mould making on your part.

There are 3 wires running out at different angles and you cast it all in one piece. I've not seen anything like that come out of Forge World !

Looking forward to doing more mechanicus stuff in the new year, hopefully at the same time as you and we have our first collaboration.

I can't wait. I have 30+ molds down and ready to be boxed as we speak, 13 are done letting glue dry. After this batch your zombies will be next and soon I hope to get the demon done and molded. That means I'm very close to doing the space pirates which IMO could be worked into almost any group of minis with bionics or all manner of things. I also need to get your swarms molded and the admech you sent.

Some work on the greatcoats. Face and detail isn't finished but this is pretty much how I see them.

Working on a couple of 28mm heroic too, compatible with the GW Guard Plastics. Not really my thing (I like the scale on the right, looks good next to marines) but other people out there might be interested.

Think this might turn out to be an alternative to the Tau Ethereal's. Inspired by an alien thing from babylon 5 :

Yeah I'm thinking 'alien ambassador' or something. Alternative to a tau ethereal perhaps, I've not decided yet.

It might never be cast we'll just see how it turns out.

Not much to report. About 2/3 the way through. 5 Greatcoats to begin with, 1 sgt and 4 riflemen. They will be one part pieces but the waists and heads can be sliced easily and repositioned. I'm really into one piece because I like mass infantry and you can put together lots in no time. Saying that the rifles will be separate but it takes 2 seconds to glue them in place.

I'll go back and do a couple crouching and running at a later date (soon), and a heavy weapon team.

Bad pics:

WIP on a 28mm heroic piece that's compatable with GW plastics. Not sure I'll get these cast but you never know.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/IceFalchion/100_3332-1.jpg

Arms on this will be bent once cured. One hand will be open in a greeting and the other will be holding some sort of staff pointing downwards. The greeting will be ambiguous, could be 'hello' could be 'bow before us'.

Must say first, subscribed lol

Your sculpting skills are really, really, REALLY impressive. I think I'll not only be reading this log a lot but looking it over a lot to study for any future sculpting I'll need to do.

My favorites so far are the black praetorians and the trenchers, though I think on the trenchers that chest flap thing is still coming out just a hair too thick. Could just be the picture angles though.

I know you said they would probably have more static poses since they are trenchers, and I know that in a stand still and shoot the enemy situation you'd be right, but I personally feel that there should be several in action shots for them as well. It is war over all. And I'd also love to use those models as non trencher type guys... I mean... not selfish reasons at all.... move along citizen lol.

Seriously, how many psyker souls would I have to feed into your golden throne to see some actionified trenchers? And whenabouts do you think the Black Praetorians/Trenchers/Greatcoaters will be up and ready on Trollforged?

Cheers mate, I'm getting there but still have a fair bit to learn. Not to mention injecting some 'coolness', stuff so far has been quite tame.

I'm concentrating on the Greatcoats at the moment, after these 5 I'll be doing a heavy weapons team (one guy crouching) and then 3 more to make a full squad of 10.

Then it's the Black Praetorians before going back to the Trenchers. Some more dynamic posing are a must I agree.

Aiming to have them ready in the next couple of months so they coincide with GW releasing the new Guard Codex. With that in mind... I better get back to sculpting.

99% complete Trench Guard, just a couple of details. 5 planned to begin with, sprue for 5 rifles and 5 backpacks too.

Same for the Greatcoats. Few touch up's here and there to go. Different rifle design.

All are one piece, except for the guns and backpacks, there's a little sprue of ammo packs in the works: aim is to have the waists sliced and repositioned on all the minis (along with the heads) so ammo packs and pouches are usefull for hiding any chips from the cutting stage. I'm looking forward to putting together and army of these... it'll be a joy not spending ages putting together multi part minis...
